Is it edge lighting on for missed notifications, or is it only for incoming notifications?

I'm wondering why almost no reviewer shows it off. Hopefully it can be heavily customized, otherwise our developer friends will likely help us out

Hmmm, well there are two tiny mentions altogether, I was considering ordering the phone today, but I will just wait for some phone with screen off notifications and full screen display. I don't want to root the device just to get, imo, basic functionality out of it.
And if edge lighting actually work for missed notifications then oneplus should do better marketing then half ass presentation and giving device to youtubers who all just say that the phone has camera and no notch.

[Q] Notification Light?

It looks like there is a light on the front but it never blinks. Is this a setting somewhere that I cannot find?
There is no notification light -- sorry.

It's one of the sensors (light or proximity) to be sure; a lot of people make the same mistake on the various Samsung devices. There's definitely no notification LED on this device.
WOW, that sucks. I really miss that and a hardware camera button. I don't think I am going to keep this phone too long. The phone is OK but not great. I need an upgrade.

Try the NOLED app from the Market. Doesn't drain power any more than a hardware LED notifier does, and lots of people love it. You can even set it up for different notices. It turns on a pixel or two on the regular screen when you have a notification come in.
There's a couple of 3rd party camera apps (Vignette is one that I use) that let you map the volume buttons to snap your photo (great for those discreet shots) or make the entire screen the tap zone for taking a pic.
Amazing how much difference there is in how we all think the importance of a notification LED is. I rarely pay attention to the one on my TB, and never really missed it on all the Galaxy S devices I've had over the last year. An LED for missed calls was a must on old flip phones, but I guess since my smart phones are constantly in my hand and getting looked at for some other reason, I don't notice it gone.
The lack of a kickstand bugs me more than the lack of an LED...never would have guessed that until I'd gotten used to using one on my TB.

Just saw this over in the development section. You might find it interesting for the camera: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144885

what can the edge do again over the s6

went to a best buy.
only thing i saw was the contact thing, which is just a tab.
i tried turning the screen off to see if i can get the edge to display anything, but the BB demo kicks on.

It's not a long list. But..they could easily add new things. And do it via the play store. Be cool if they released an api for it.
could somebody list them? im guessing the best buy demo wasnt letting me do everything

rubbing up and down the side reveals a clock and some other screens. There is a way to add a score ticker and stock ticker to it, but the BB demo blocks it.
cant do too much but I do use an app called Sidebar and i use it A LOT so the edge will come in handy for that app. also will be using an app called drupe that recently released. to take advabntage of the edges. i still cant believe i spent 998 on a phone though. im not telling people how much i paid for it. they'll be quick to judge

Watching a video review, that function looks very laggy. Rub rub, the phone thinks for a while, and then the clock appears. I think it's too slow to be useful. They should have added something like Moto Active Screen or MS Glance Screen onto these phones.
You guys have to wait. The edge will become more and more functional with updates.

I don't think it does anything the regular S6 can do. The dual edge glass is pure aesthetics.

Yes
The S6 Edge has few extra features that the S6 doesn't have.
Peoples Edge
Edge Lighting
Notification
News Ticker
NIght Clock
& 50 mAh more battery than the S6.

does it have Always on display (not ambient notifications)

As the title says, am asking if anyone knows for sure if the oneplus6 have an always on display (like pixel 2 or Samsung or most of the new phones).. I know it has the ambition notification display but am asking about the always on.. Thanks.
Yes, the 5T had it, so I don't see any reason, why the OP6 shouldn't have it. I have also seen some "first impressions" videos on YT and it has the AOD.

The 5T has an ambiant display, it's not an AOD. I have ordered the oneplus 6 and it should arrive early next week, I will update you then but I'm pretty sure it will have an ambiant display.

Exactly.. I wanted to response to the first post, but i thought i was wrong, Given that i searched around every where on oneplus forums.. Some tend to mix between ambient notifications and always on display..
I will be looking forward for the right answer..
Flossy Carter said it’s ambient like the 5T. I’m pretty sure this is correct through I only owned a 5 (which wasn’t a AOD).

I find this very strange from oneplus, why didn't they activate this feature yet, even LCD screens phones has these always on display..
I prefer ambient over AOD personally

AOD is in works and will come to 6/5T/5 in the coming updates.

No, AOD is not a software-only thing if efficiency is desired (no matter if using OLED or not). You can do it in software, but it will be as efficient as those Play Store apps, meaning it will ruin your battery. Samsung and LG have specially designed hardware for AOD, with LG also having a separate backlight control for AOD-only (only part of the LCD backlight is on with AOD on - but of course Samsung doesn't have this issue on OLED). But even for OLED, a special display driver chip which supports slow refresh rates and additional memory needs to be used in order for AOD to be efficient, and Samsung has worked hard to optimize theirs (I have an Galaxy A3 2017 and there is little difference with AOD on or off - there is more with my S7 Edge but still pretty efficient).
The Oppo R15 and R15 Pro have AOD (but quite inefficient), and the display hardware is very similar to OP6 from what I know, so there is some hope.
However, I find the notification LED to be much more useful than AOD because you can see it from a distance and if you use an app like Light Flow, you can pulse it or color it differently for different notifications and you will basically "learn" very fast to interpret it - with much less power draw.
I got the phone yesterday and it had and and was working fine. Got a ota and aod is gone. Why. I liked it so much

Hope being like Sammy or LG implemintation and not Google with Pixel.
I really like having planty of choice with customization like Korean offers with latest flagship and not the very poor and basic function of Google AOD.
A quick answer. With Ambient notifications, the screen light up when a notification arrives?

Yes with ambient display it would light up when a notification comes and with AOD the screen would show the notification preview and then show the app icon as pending notification as the screen is always on.
It creates a much better amoled experience as the whole screen is dark and only the notification and the notification icon along with the clock you select pops up.
There are some speculations of a burn in so that's why the team is working and testing it in detail till its made available in public.

if there is actually a burn in ... doesn't that mean its a hardware defect? implying no aod ever?

Actually yes and no. Burn in are hardware defects caused in oled panel by showing constantly same image in same place. But function to move image by 1-2-5pixels per given time is sooo easy to program that I can't see any reason they wouldn't implement it, than maybe from marketing point they will want it to ship with 6T, alongside wireless charging and maybe second camera that actually does something that is what I would guess.
Got my OnePlus 6 today from Amazon.de. On the first Start i had the Always On Display with exactly the same Samsung Galaxy Functions. The first OTA Update removed this Function now, really disappointed! Im a Big fan of Always on Display, i hope it will come back

Does One Plus 7 Pro has Notification Led unlike One plus 6T ? Thanks

But does it stay on indefinitely? No good if it only flashes the edge once while I'm out of the room.
I hope it doubles as a strobe light...
I think it works like Samsung edge lighting... only goes through 1 cycle which is only for a few seconds. Same issue I have with the s10+ at the moment.

This is definitely true
I don't get it. Never Settle pushing out new hardware better this better that. But can't address this simple issue with notifications on screen. It seems like OnePlus is a name that has a big brand master that is playing deaf not hearing this. I don't give a rat's ass about 7/7pro till " never settle" will address simple issues with previous models.
Maybe support this brilliant developer and put LED light notification problem behind.
Look for AOE- Always On Edge

Not sure if you have been reading the thread or watch the launch event. A main point addressed has been the no Led notifications. There is a blue edge now for notifications.
Yes I've seen it. Someone was asking about duration of notifications and way to dismiss it. Happened to be AOE let you customize all that. I own 6T and with out help from outside developers OnePlus did nothing to fix it. Most of solutions I found out there are good projects but need some more work to make it flow less and that where oneplus should have step in. But apparently OnePlus don't care about 6/6T users. I know OnePlus got it in books already so who cares! Right ?

General Vibration motor is terrible on S22 Ultra

So probably few of you already know that S22U is using a x axis motor instead of z-axis. This new motor is used to enhance the haptic feedback, however this has reduced the vibration intensity on the device. I got the device last day and was driving with device in my pocket on vibration mode. I missed notifications and calls for an urgent situation as the vibration was so soft and i didn't noticed it. Luckily i had old s8+ on me where i got notified.
My situation doesn't allow me to have a ringer on all the time. I am now thinking of returning the device just because of this. I really loved everything else on this device. Sad to see that samsung engineers screwed this up. No more pre orders going forward.
The vibration motor doesn't really bother me. I am able to feel whenever it goes off in my pocket. And I don't wear skinny jeans lol. Maybe you would be happier with a Motorola since you are a Motorola lover?
I'm experiencing the same with my s22 ultra. I'm coming from a S20 plus which the vibration alone could be used as an alarm clock. Definitely disappointing, considering how much of an upgrade this phone is.

I remember when the s21 came out and reviewers were complaining that the motor was too strong when it was laying down on a table. It was too loud. Now they make a motor that's quieter and now people complain that it's too quiet. It's a rough business

Seems to me to be why there is a setting to adjust the strength to one's personal likes. The issue is it only goes so high. I agree with the OP. I noticed it being weaker despite being set wide open.

Nah.. i ain't happy with motorola anymore.. there was a time. Anyhow.. good for you if you don't find vibration an issue. But it certainly is much more weak. If S21U had strong vibration.. people had option to dial it down.. Here the problem is weak and we don't have an option to increase it, unless samsung does some sort of firmware upgrade to increase intensity further.
A reviewer noted that they're using a different vibration motor this year. It's definitely less strong and there was mention that it moves in a different direction than previous models.

Haha, for that price tag, I want it to be one though!
Have my 22 Ultra for a week now.... had to change the vibration to another pattern, otherwise I wouldn't recognize it at all..... that a major downgrade from my old S20 6.1".
People shouldn't call this an improvement at all, thats some kind of fanboysm.
Vibrations purpose is to quietly inform you that you are receiving a call or message, if that does work worse than before, bad decisions have been made.
I still have the possibility to just enable notification vibration on my Galaxy Watch4 , but this comes at the cost of enabling this for every damn notification (teams, telegram, whatsapp.... ) and you know that this is draining the battery pretty fast.... especially if you have friends that spam every now and then...
Samsung implemented the x-axis in the most terrible way. Hopefully Samsung can fix this via an update, but highly doubt it since it's most likely the hardware.
I actually love the refined feel to the motor. It feels great in the hand.

only when its in hand.. if its in your pocket..(specially with loose pants / jackets ) .. you won't even feel the vibration and will miss notifications & calls !
samsung posted an update on the issue -

Why the vibration mode does not work properly on Galaxy S22 Series?
www.samsung.com
the vibraton is to low since s6 edge, on note 20 ultra i dont notice any message and on s22 ultra it is more less as before , i ask me why samsung not remove the motor, because for this low intensity it is as it has no motor,
i make it with soundmanager of goodlook app, with custom vibration and make a pattern very long so it's a little pit better, maybe someone make a app like light flow to set a costume vibraton for every app
why they build in so a less motor? they can build in a stronger and more options to set the intensity,

Coming from an s21u I definitely feel the difference in the vibration intensity as well. In my case, what "solved" this issue for me was pairing my s22u with a samsung smartwatch. That way I can feel the notifications vibrations in my arm and never miss it. I know it's not a solution for everyone, but it worked for me at least..
