[Q] IRC beginner question - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've heard that the IRC channel has alot of roms that we don't see in the development section. I found a link to the IRC and looked around but could only find a link in the topic for CM7. I was wondering if there was a list or something that shows all the roms that everyones talking about in the IRC, or is it more like you have to request them and someone provides a link?
Im sorry im extremely new to IRC and would like to idle in IRC to keep up to date on whats going on in Shift rom development.

there aren't necessarily more roms in the IRC, but betas are posted more frequently. come in, chat and find some roms, ask some questions.

With so many Shift owners just idling around it's a good place for devs to find guinea pigs. Hang out and you never know when someone might post a beta to try. I got to try out GB Sense this morning =)

Android 2.2 Gingerbread for Samsung Galaxy S 4G?

I am trying to find the gingerbread rom for my husbands Galaxy S. Kind of new at this and will need directions if anyone can lead me in the right direction i'd be very greatful. Thanks in advance.
On a side note, 2.3 is Gingerbread. If you browse the Galaxy S forums, you would be able to find what you need. I went ahead and found the stock one for you.
Just a word of advise, if you are new to installing roms, I would recommend finding someone that knows what they are doing, or you could risk bricking his phone.
thanks although the links didn't show up he wants to be able to watch netflix on his phone of course if there is an easier way to allow him to do that i would be much happier with that. Im just not sure how to go about it i do understand that bricking is possible but i dont' have anyone to do it but me so i kind of stuck

Currently the only way to watch netflix on the gs4g is with Gingerbread 2.3.3.
There is a odin flashable rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1146145
Before flashing I would read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759
It is not that difficult just make sure to read through the forum and use the search button.
Remember however at this time gingerbread is a leaked build, so it may have some bugs. Future releases will likely fix this but may take some time.
THANKS
Thank you so much for all the info i did flash our HD2's to android but mine is having some issues now and i went to the GS but the screen was to small for me being as i'm almost blind in a sense but i will try this and see if this is what he wants or wants to go back to HD2. Again thanks so much.
you have absolutely no clue what your'e talking about. Please take 1 minute to research next time, and you'll realize there are 2 gingerbread versions on this site.
the fact tha you don't e ven know that 2.3 is gingerbread means you shouldn't even be posting yet
She asked a question. Yes, she could have researched, but you don't have to be so rude about it; especially when corradokng addressed her issue as well as telling her to search next time.
Abie, let us know how it goes. I hope you guys get it working. Check out the netflix threads in the themes section

Honestly, that's one of the most unnecessary posts I've seen in a while.
You're supposed to be kind to new users, not rude.
People like you are why Krylon left XDA.
Oh ok, I'm sorry that there's a section in this forum called Android Development, and that the OP didn't bother to even click on that.

MIUI for SK 4g

Is there anyone working on port a MIUI rom to the sidekick 4g or know how to do it. I whated to try to port the vibrant MIUI rom to the sidekic 4g but I don't know how.
Sent from my Sidekick 4g rooted stock rom 2.2 using Tapatalk
Ya I kinda wondered that myself...MIUI would be awesome..hopefully we can get some devs over in this section. Just picked a SK4G and so far pleased.
This is a pretty interesting post considering I just tried out MIUI on my old Vibrant. An amazing ROM. I'd put some money into it if they were interested in making a SK4G version.
I've ran MIUI on my HD2 for awhile now and switching to the SK is like learning a whole nea android lol...there's one on the Vibrant...how easy would it be to port it since the guys are about the same?

Spec wise I believe the phones are the same, but really aren't. Keyboard, camera, RAM, GPS (it works lol), Jump Button, Track Pad, etc. I though the same when I got the SK4G but found my self way off haha. I guess the base is all the same as a Galaxy S but there are certain changes to make the phone cheaper.
I'm sure if someone got a hold of the Bali Kernel that drhonk created then it'll be a step in the right direction.
whats miui?
This should go to general , & this is why developer's quit the SK4G because of people like you . Stop asking for roms or ETA's it get's developer's pist off .

Miui would be nice for the SK4G, but as fawk said this should go into the general section since this has nothing to do with actual development.

Honestly this is why developers aren't here in the SK4G section because someone asks if there is a rom development going on? Just about every section for a phone if someone doesn't see the type of rom there is a question asked if there is anything being developed for it. Something like this shouldn't cause a developer to leave, it should show them that there is a interest in a type of rom.
That being said I do agree that people shouldn't always ask about a ETA on a rom that's being developed because yes that does annoy the developer.
Thing is as much as I love a MIUI rom and would want it I have seen people get bashed (fawk mainly) for having these types of posts in the development section. This community is dying because everyone is so divided. But just saying that yes we hope someone will develop/port MIUI over to the SK4G and I don't like people giving etas but people have been literally forum-yelled at by people for posting this stuff in development.

AyoTeddy is the only ROM developer now & i woulden't bother him & alot of the ROM dev's that were here left same as kernel dev's but i made a ROM & it's open for Beta - Testing here

He got tired of the BS that goes on around here. He said that he was tired of answering question that could be answering by people just doing a little research, and was also tired of people not following the "rules." I completely understand his frustration. He wrote a huge post about it which I think can be found in the gerneral section titled "thinking of leaving XDA" or something like that. He even said he was thinking of disappearing and keeping his work to himself. I do not know if he has stopped deving or just went somewhere else. But god I hope he hasn't stopped deving for us.
Damn noobs making all the mistakes, yet we get the consequences aswell.

He's still deving. Mods locked his threads and that was the last straw. You'll be able to find him on rootz though.

Ah, he must've removed it. It said something to the effect of, "I'm leaving. Figure it out on your own."
His signature did change.
Regardless, you can follow his work on github:

...See ya, I'm out... kinda. Still working on this phone, I just don't care to partake in the xda shenanigans anymore. Yup, sourceforge and github are where I do stuff.
See: http://bhundven.users.sourceforge.net for more... it should also point you to teamacid, teamnerd, and my personal stuff.
A few senior moderators have pm'd me, and I reexplained my opinion on xda, which they seem to agree with.
This site is called: xda-developers
I think this site needs to go back to being a place for "DEVELOPERS", like it once was.
The "Thinking of leaving..." post was deleted (afaik) because the users started to act unrully in it. Go figure. Good job guys.
But what I stated in that thread, and I will restate here. I'm not done developing, but I don't have a lot of time to work on this stuff. I'm close to getting cm7 to boot, but I will guess that after it works, and there will be lots of fixes before it is stable for users to use. So even if I get cm7 booting I won't release it right away. I do not want to push out a rom that doesn't work right. (well, good enough for me).
do what you gotta man. you have my full support. just wish people were as patient as i am. keep up the awesome work. also, if you need any help with anything, just let me know. i'm willing to test things out and also willing to help out with any graphical ideas. you know how to reach me.

I actually had some free time and i decided to read alot of the threads last night and i can see why you all get so frustrated with people asking "when will you be done??" "how does this work??" I had to read for about three days on just how to even root.. let alone flash my first rom.. but we all wont learn everything if we dont take the time to read it fully ( I love the whole trial and error of it.) Im by all means am not tech savvy but this site has all the answers to ALL the questions to ALL the beautiful roms on this site.. kernel's, roms, baseband, builds, and even mods.. all work in conjunction with eachother.. for me its like putting my own perfect puzzle together to my liking.. Brian has helped me out alot.. Ive only been a member on this site for a short period of time and it pains me that you all feel this way.. Im not a dev.. Im a nurse.. I do know from my career it can be frustrating from people asking the same questions over and over and over.. Ive asked alot of questions and you all have been so helpful to me.. Im just sorry you all feel this way.. I remember signing up a few months ago i watched the video and i got it.. there are alot of different personalities on this site some good some bad.. its just sad that a few "idiots" have got to screw it up for the rest of us that are willing to learn... Ive learned alot in my two months of being here and i just wanted to take the time and say thanks to all of you.. I love this site im on it all the time.. for me personally its a great site my Favorite period.. its just sad that all this ignorance would cause a great person to leave.. thanks Brian for all you have helped me with.. blessings to you and your family man..
Thanks bryan we will never forget you as u have done a big change to our phone... may the good Lord bless and keep you,, will always be at your side..
I am also thinking of migrating to rootz. I already have an account.
So I am reposting my rom over there. See me if you wish. I will respond to pm, and I will post rom updats and "Link Up" etc....

[Q] Galaxy s 4G ICS

Threads like this.
Also, the other phones have like a billion and one kernel devs. Not to mention our phone is Sammy's black sheep, by that I mean this phone is way different from other sgs.

Why does everybody get annoyed when a regular person just wants to know whats wrong out of curiosity? I don't want any ROM or anything I just wanted a technical answer. is the problem the source code being unreleased? will the company ever release it?
I wish I could help, I would really love to. Its like a dream or long term goal to be a dev, study programming languages etc... but that requires lots of time and I'm just waiting a bit as i'm not sure where to start.
I am sorry for any misunderstanding as I know Devs already have rough days and nights with developing and improving. I wasn't "Demanding" or "pushing" as i'm not that person. I am just seeking knowledge, and if the Q&A section isn't the right place to search for Knowledge then I don't know where is.
The problem isn't with you so much as it is with the million dollar question that's been asked and answered a million times....its the question all devs cringe over when they see it repeated time n time again.
Put yourself in their shoes for a minute.....they put out as much as they can with what they can and people keep popping up this same question like they just aren't happy with what they are getting
To answer your question, and anybody else that wants to ask,
It is being worked on. We cannot get ICS to boot due to coding and kernel issues. I semi successfully ported an ICS ROM, but due to all the mods and changes, it felt empty. So we went back to the drawing board and started over. Since we don't have source code, it makes things much more difficult. Be patient. And for the record, the first place to search for knowledge is Google. Fb is right though. We do need more help. The more people we have working on this, the better our chances are. Learn how to compile kernel and ROM from source. Learn scripting. And learn how to Google...

I do understand what you mean, and I already put myself in the dev's shoes and I really admire their work, all of it. But I went through all the threads regarding ICS, and sadly their aim is to push , demand and request stuff from devs as if devs don't have enough on their minds already, and that is really annoying and disrespectful. But not all people are like that. I don't have any requests( I have a Nexus S with ICS, SGS 4g CM7.2) I am just seeking knowledge.
I am really grateful for what each and every DEV offers as it is from their personal and free time. Sorry for any misunderstanding

What Thomas posted is true but the main reason we dont have a working ICS port is this statement above.
The op makes a good point, this is the Q&A section. Even tho there are many threads asking this same question most of them have ended up in bashing with nerf bats or a mod locking because of insults. Ive read the other threads, but most people will stop reading when the conversation turns sour. You might actually read the other posts but your mind shuts it down. So a informative post will slip in and you wont catch it.
The biggest problem with threads that ask this question is assumptions. When people stop assuming and start to understand the person asking the question things get resolved.

OK guys let's help The Beast! The issue we are talking about is wifi for CM 10.1. I know most of you are like me and can only flash ROMs and search forums. So let's search some forums. If you find a phone that has had the same problem and fixed it. Post your links here. I don't want links of all the working CM 10.1 ROMs either. I want ROMs that have had the same WiFi problem and then have fixed it. Let's get going

Yea sadly my first link i found did not have comments directly talking about the wifi fix. But yea people do what Beast just posted if possible. I have found posts in the last couple of days about the wifi problem with CM 10.1 , but i cant find them today. They are out there people the more fingers we got searching for us the bigger chance we have to find the fix! Lets get this thread huge with links!
http://drewdoesit.com/2013/04/19/wifi-and-gps-fixes-available-now-for-oppo-find-5/. He goes into a little detail of how he fixed wifi im sure you could talk to him through github for more info. https://github.com/drewx2/android_device_oppo_find5/commits/master
If you can figure out which phones specifically it might be easier to google the kernel/device trees.
Remember you should be looking mainly for source code, not just flashable zips

That'll help a lot. I keep telling people who ask me why I got into programming that I did it mainly to serve my own purposes. I try to fix problems that I have myself or even to make things less annoying. The problem solving is what I really enjoy.
Basically everything that I've made and released here on XDA started as me trying to improve our phone or just make using it easier. I figure other people might find some things useful so I release them .
You wanna have that kind of mentality, "How can I improve my sgs4g? What problems do I usually have with it? Can I write a script/program that'll make it easier to use?"
If you start trying to learn while using that mindset you'll definitely get to great places.
Maybe beastmode, bhundven, dsexton, jeffsf, max, myst or raver (in alphabetical order) can chime in on this too .
what is native wifi?
