Washington Post Fail! LOL - HTC Inspire 4G

So i log into my news channels and do a search for HTC Inspire just like i have done for the past 2 weeks.. i run across this artical: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/feb/8/kellner-htc-inspire-4g-is-nice-but-no-iphone/ i get done reading it and have to do a double take saying, 'Wahhhhhhh'.. this journalist.. FAILED miserably in his testing of the HTC Inspire. I just had to share this monumental fail with someone else. he talks about the RAM of the phone when compaired to internal memory of the iphone. he also talks about how you cant control the volume with the headset on corded headphones. read the reviews at the end of his artical for a good laugh

Regardless of whether he was the most expert professional in the field of phone reviews - the article was written with the grammar and structure of a middle school student.
What he actually managed to convey - was how he had no clue about android devices. I don't know what impression you guys got, but this dude must have had all the settings on full blast/5 min sync interval etc. etc... you know, the stuff that all comes switched on that most people logically edit, disengage and customize.

This is why I don't think anyone will have any trouble walking into an AT&T store on Sunday and walking out with one. Most of the phone using public is unaware of the power of Android phones and AT&T doesn't do a very good job of pushing them either. I think there will be plenty of Inspires to fulfill demand come Sunday.

I stopped reading when he said the Inspire only had 8GB of RAM. He didn't even get the storage right much less calling it RAM. You have 4GB onboard and an 8GB sd card. 4 + 8 still equals 12 right?

Whhaaa? * in minion voice*
I think the guy sure loves his iPhone. I found his review so boring and uninformative that I just had to stop reading.

well the inspire had 768 MB on board RAM for the OS and programs to run in. the 8+4 GB flash is for storage. Atrix has 1 GB of on board RAM which would be nice. BUT coming from the tilt 2 with 128 MB of on board ram for windows (been running android on it) Android still runs decent and is usable so I am looking VERY much forward to getting my hands on this piece of hardware.
Tech Specs from HTC: http://www.htc.com/us/products/inspire-att#tech-specs

768? That's more than iPhone 4, correct?
Damn Im siked.

iPhone 4 specs here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_4#Processor_and_memory
The iPhone 4 is powered by the Apple A4 chip, which was designed by Intrinsity[citation needed] and, like all previous iPhone models, manufactured by Samsung.[43] This system-on-a-chip is composed of a Cortex-A8 CPU integrated with a PowerVR SGX 535 GPU.[44] The Apple A4 is also used in the iPad where it is clocked at its rated speed of 1 GHz. The clock speed in the iPhone 4 has not been disclosed . All previous models of the iPhone have underclocked the CPU, which typically extends battery life and lowers heat dissipation.
The iPhone 4 has 512 MB of eDRAM. The additional eDRAM supports increased performance and multi-tasking.[45]

but again you can have the fastest hardware in the world but if the software is not programmed to take advantage of the hardware its crap! one reason apple has done so well is they do a decent job with what hardware they have also they use the WOW factor for sales! and to tell the truth it works! android is learning from this from what i can tell and they are getting there!!

Why do you guys make fun of these questions?
They obviously have a legitament question which you can be answerd. No need to answer in the way you did.
First of all, The Gtab, in essence is a Malata zpad. And the T2 version was offered with 1gig of ram... If you did some reaserch you can see this. It is a legitament question.
I never took apart a GTab so I have no idea if its possible.
As far as the hard drive, you could have mentioned to them that it uses a flash based memory and may not be upgradable.
Was that so hard?

Interesting
I'll take my gTablet apart later when I get home from work and let you know if the RAM is soldered onto the board or if you can swap it out. My guess is that it's soldered.
I've taken mine apart and it's not like a PC or netbook where you have SIMM slots to add / change RAM - it's a chip soldered onto the board.
With that in mind - it may not be impossible, but definitely not an easy task, imo.

*facepalm*
First of all. 512MB of RAM, DIMM slots, etc... My head hurts.
Brief spark of flame... Onto the help.
In my brief stint at staples, I saw the release of the G Tablet. And VERY quickly saw its recall. Whether you are running the original or their "fixed" edition, common sense derives you should get out from under that thing and get a much better tablet (anything not made by ViewSonic would be a GREAT start).
Now, onto what I do know about upgrading Soldered RAM. In almost ALL cases pertaining to ram that is soldered to the motherboard, it is almost impossible to upgrade it in anyway. I say "almost" because there is one exception I know of to date.
The original Xbox (ohhhhh, i miss that big black brick!!!). It came stock with 64MB of internal RAM. Soldered to the board. But there were 4 extra "slots" to solder down additional RAM as long as it was RAM from the same generation board (as there were a total of 8 or 9 different editions of the xbox motherboard released) and it was done CAREFULLY.
I highly doubt that viewsonic had any need or want to allow for expandability in their horrible excuse for a tablet (seriously, I think the nook color is faster than that pile of garbage). So my general answer (thanks to process of elimination) is NO, it will not be possible.
Have a nice day!

I bought one just to dabble around with since my HP laptop that I was using for web surfing died. tried the stock ROM, holy s***, what a pile. Put Vegan Tab on it and it is quite a nice tablet now. Of course I did my research, and decided that I don't need 1 GB RAM especially with the improved performance of the Vegan ROM. But, if I decide to go the internal GPS route, I might go for some RAM too while I'm in there if it is possible.
EDIT: Just noticed, I have been on here for almost a year, and this is my first post.

Hmmm. I was not talking about the software. I was talking about the sad excuse for original hardware. You might have gotten it AFTER the recall. But they RECALLED it for a reason. My store got 100 of them in at launch, and all of them got recalled within the following month. Why? The GPU's were built wrong. And I had a few customers flash custom ROMs and still had the same issues.
Thanks for the clarity, though. We were apparently talking about two different generations of tablets.
And either way. I hate everything Viewsonic makes. Spend another 50 bucks and get a better quality piece of hardware. I have never had anything but trouble with ANY of their products in the 7 years I have been in electronics retail.

I got one of the original units a month after it came out. When I got it, there were no issues whatsoever after flashing a custom ROM. It got sent back during one of my "dumbass wanna-be dev" moments (I tried to get Windows CE on it and flashed the wrong BCT)
My 2nd one had a busted screen
3rd a busted screen LED backlight
and now the 4th is on it's way out (it thinks it's charging all......the.....time)
All my units are before the recall.
(and Tapn'Tap is still one huge Pileo'**** )

The memory as far as I can tell is in the FBGA package. Which means Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array. In otherwords you can't just get in there with a solding iron like a metcal, and a microscope and change it. It would require more expensive equipment to reflow the chip off and replace it with a 1 gb Ram package. What they use on the 1GB version is HYNIX H5PS1G83EFR-S6C.

Actually, no. If you have read the article, you should know that the cores are not used simultaneously for every single task.
The attached picture in the article shows how the cores are utilized separately, so in reality, the companion core is there to help you save battery, not drain it further.
Does this documentation being released imply that the first kal-el tablets should be here soon??
Actually Tegra 3 was due end of August but reportedly because it wants to co-release with the Asus Tf2 and ICS the unveiling is delayed even until now. Expect October!
I really hope so as October is only a few weeks away, but isn't it weird that not much info has been leaked about any specific Kal-El devices.
I mean we know that the TF2 will have Kal-El, but how come not much info is known about the TF2 itself. Usually specs and some pics or something leaks way ahead of release.
I'm just worried that my wait is going to be dragged out until 2012

Hardware-wars are a GOOD thing. It means more choice and lower prices with more feature for more people. This is how wealth gets extended deeper and deeper across society--by making more goods and services accessible even at the low end .

Yes, all thanks to nVidia's ULP technology. Now with the companion core it further dumbs down the need for all four cores in casual tasks and distributes tasks evenly.

I prefer a more optimized Android which requires less computing power than hardware wars.
This is like computer programming again: fewer devs willing to optimize their software and mostly rely on exponential increase in hardware powers.
But wait! You may not know that the hardware power will not increase indefinitely. And all these four-five-eight cores SoC will be some niche market items.

Well what I do expect is a great overall piece of hardware with maybe a few nicks here or there like every phone has. Software wise I don't see it as bringing anything substantially new. It's like the gingerbread update, or maybe a 2.3.4-2.3.5.

[Q] What's next?

The Galaxy S lll is coming out in the next couple of months and the rumor mills have it set up as the most advanced phone yet.
Quad Core 1.5 processor
LTE 700
720 x 1280 pixels (720P HD), 4.7" Non-Pentile screen (Possibly)
12MP Camera
[email protected] video recording
NFC
Active noise cancellation
So, my questions are...
1) where does the cell phone industry go from here?
2) How does it improve on this phone?
3) Why would it have to? After all, this is still a phone, not a portable computer, that is what tablets are for.
4) Can this be the last phone I buy for the next 10 years?
rumor mills suggest s3 is already out there and is none other than note but still a device actually named s3 is not denied in the future.
About the improvement, it won't stop. Something will be improved further and further, for example better GPU.

You know, that is a pretty sweet lookin' phone, but it totally makes sense to me if they're going to do what I've heard (from the rumor mill) about Android 5 (JellyBean?). The rumor is that you can pop your phone into a specially designed laptop, and the phone will do all the processing for the laptop, and Android 5 will be designed to support that sort of UI. Not sure how that'll work, not even sure if these rumors are true, but it would explain a quad core and everything.

Yes, technically, it is a computer, but how many people today use it as such?

Everyone who uses a phone to surf the web, do emails, read or edit documents, etc, etc. IOW pretty much everyone with a 'smartphone'.

Very true, this is my first Android phone, and before this I could only call and text (reasonably). Just the fact that we can install our own programs and do development make these pretty nice little computers.

It will probably be faster, nicer screens, more memory, but still have not improved their battery life alot, which is actually what should be focused on...

hello, lets buy an ubuntu phone

if all members of xda deveolopers buy an ubuntu phone
only that way ubuntu could reach its goal of 32 millions to make the ubuntu phone
example
40 000 members x 700 dls= 28 millions
I thought about it, but I just received the Sony Xperia Z Ultra!!
They still have a long ways to go as of today. Only 9 million and they were after the 32mill. Too bad. I was hoping to see this a success.

They need another $21,000,000 to reach their $32,000,000 target! And only have 11 days to do it....not gonna happen I'm afraid

Unfortuanely, most Americans won't be able to buy this phone. The monthly service bills are whack a$$ high because the carriers want you to sign a 2 year contract. That way, you get a higher monthly bill but a lower up front price.
You could buy an unlocked phone, but then you would end up paying the same service bill as someone who got their phone for 500USD less. So unless he or she is OK with paying for the phone almost twice, no American will buy this phone. Or any unlocked phone.
Or of course, someone may have money to burn. The only major carrier that (only 1month ago) doesn't use contracts anymore is T mobile.

Except a sapphire crystal display, which I believe has a hardness of 9H; Diamond is 10H.
A 128GB capacity.
4 GB RAM.
Silicon Anode Li-ion batteries (as opposed to standard graphite) that are estimated to have 3X the capacity.
Stereo speakers (like the HTC One)
The ability to dual boot Android and Ubuntu.
The ability to connect to an external display and become a full desktop PC.
Dual-LTE antenna.
OTG support.
$700 price.
Nope, nothing special about this phone at all.
Obviously, this is only on paper. The Edge, unfortunately, will never see the light of day. The specs are unrealistic for the price, unless Canonical is working on a tiny, tiny margin. I would LOVE to have this phone instead of my One. But I live in 'Murica, where everybody who doesn't sign a contract pays double for their phones...
I would love to see the Ubuntu Edge make it! Here's to hoping for a last minute "Hail Mary".

Too bad none of us are winners of that recent Powerball drawing.
Is there an Ubuntu phone?
Canonical is a kid compared to Google (the beast)...android is the best

it would be really cool phone, 700$ dosn't sound to bad for the phone.
Canonical's Ubuntu Edge missed their indiegogo funding by $20mil
Too bad that they didnt reach their goal, wanted that phone

Will the people whom donated get there money back, or did Mark Shuttleworth just make a crap load for nothing but shiny pictures and unreal expectations.

You merely needed to have a look at the indiegogo page to see that nobody made a "crap load":
What if you fail to reach the funding target?
We appreciate every bit of support we receive during the 30 days, and every backer will be welcomed into the Ubuntu community. If we don’t reach our target then we will focus only on commercially available handsets and there will not be an Ubuntu Edge. All contributions will be fully refunded.

Anyway... as a Maemo user (still), I'm glad Ubuntu will be focusing on commercial handsets. I've no use for a super Ubuntu phone that costs as much as a mid-level laptop; rather, I want Linux to breathe life in the low-end segment. Android is a RAM hog, and the low-end handsets don't quite have enough to run it properly; but a pure Linux system works wonders with low amounts of memory. My N900 does almost everything I'd want to do on a modern dualcore phone with a gig of RAM, and it only has 256 megabytes. If we got Ubuntu running on cheap phones we could get excellent performance on phones costing less than $150 - possibly even entry-level ones costing less than $100, if the system could be slimmed down enough.
I'm also hoping that the availability of drivers for Ubuntu might make it possible to run other systems - specifically, Debian-based ones.
I like its look and feel but Android looks and feels even better
