Question RCS locked to carrier? - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Hey,
Just got the S22Ultra today. I see that messages is now the default, which is good. But it appears RCS is now specific to AT&T only? When before it worked with anyone who had Google messages.
Has anyone else encountered this?

AT&T is known for having an implementation of RCS that doesn't go outside it's network.
Why? Don't ask me...
Solution: Install the "U1" firmware

Would we lose WiFi calling / VoLTE / Visual Voicemail with that?

In the past there was difficulty using non carrier branded firmware and losing those particular features...
However at this point in time, VoLTE is a requirement to be connected to AT&Ts network.. and wifi calling works great I'm running U1 on AT&T Unlimited Elite with both features working well

Which csc did you choose if you don't mind me asking, for the U1 firmware?
I have the S22 Ultra on U firmware with AT&T Unlimited Elite Plan as well and my 5G is amazing, sometimes even faster than my wifi.
Do you use USC or ATT for the U1 firmware's csc. I'm going to download from Frija and flash tomorrow. Hate the bloatware.

I forgot to mention that Visual Voice-mail works 100% as well. I used the U1 firmware posted here which I believe is multi-CSC. Generally speaking, if you punch most CSC into a Downloader like Frija, it will pull the same firmware zip file (U1) - there are some exceptions like Thom Browne which use a custom zip. Wifey and I were having problems sending photos via Text / "Advanced Messaging" on "U" firmware. I flashed both our phones to U1 (wow, flashing via USB-C cable takes 1 minute to flash the 7 gig firmware at 10gbps, pretty nice)
"U1" comes with both Samsung Messages and Samsung's customized Google messages build.
Samsung Messages still tries to use Advanced Messaging on AT&T, so that's out of the picture on "U1" as well.
But, Google Messages works great using Jibe as the backend for RCS as usual.

Thanks! What about 5G?
Also, did you do a full wipe going from U to U1? Or used HOME_CSC to keep data.

5G works great. AT&T gatekeeps 5G via a combination of factors:
5G Capable Plan on account
5G IMEI reported from connecting device
5G Capable APN connected from device (enhancedphone, nrphone, nrbroadband)
Firmware doesn't seem to affect it in my experience.
The "U1" image posted does not contain a HOME_CSC, so maintaining data is not an option this time around. I would still recommend a factory reset immediately prior to changing firmware from U1<-->U, while it does work, I feel like that introduces a tendency to glitchiness.

S22 uses a nice 5G modem that brings a beefy featureset, it has notable diversity and carrier aggregation improvements that seem to be shining through nicely on AT&T. I notice different bands being connected than typical with my other devices. For example I'm getting 10mhz of Band 29 downlink CA which is bumping speed test results nicely.

The reason I got the carrier locked version was to not lose those features. It was an issue in the past. It's nice to know it's been resolved.
It looks like a work around is being considered. A lot of ppl are complaining about the RCS issue in messages. I'll wait a while before I flash, but thanks for that option.

Is the U1 firmware the USA unlocked?

U1 firmware is world-wide unlocked, it includes all the necessary customizations to connect the bare minimum services + enhanced features (carrier video calling, RCS, visual voicemail, APN settings)
U1 doesn't come with the carrier specific "bloatware" and branding.
U has all that stuff that no one wants. In the past we had to use that flavor to enable carrier features as crispy1805 mentioned. No more! Now we can enjoy the bloatware free goodness.

It seems to be a global issue. I've been monitoring other forms: https://forums.att.com/conversation...2c097b3be6?commentId=62166982bd69402c097b3ed2

Need some input

So I have a sm-930p I used to be on Sprint but recently moved and had to switch to T-Mobile for reception. But unfortunately when I got this my 930p it has already had binary 6 on it from Sprint so basically I can't do anything fun and my carrier still can lock down my hotspot and I cannot push the newest firmware that is actually for T-Mobile. My phone works but thinks like visual voicemail wifi calling are not functioning as they should. Ultimately I would like to have the ability to install debloated rom and keep my safety net. Should I just buy a different sm930 variant or does someone have a more Dev friendly phone they would suggest they is on par with S7 performance.
Thanks in advance
since i cannot flash the full tmobile firmware could i at least flash only a tmobile CSC to optimize the phone for tmobile and maybe bring back my visual voicemail and voip or are the CSC files very firmware version specific?

Unlocked Pre-Order from Samsung w ATT SIM - will I be able to use WiFi calling /VoLTE

Current Note8 user on ATT (phone locked to carrier). I pre-ordered a Note20 Ultra from Samsung direct, unlocked version. Have been off XDA really for a couple years and not rooting/modding much lately but have read that ATT will not allow unlocked phones on their network to use WiFi Calling and/or VoLTE. If true, are there workaround options for me (assuming I stick w ATT as the carrier I mean) to get these to work, or should I cancel the unlocked model and order the ATT version? Was hoping to root eventually and remove bloatware / play w custom ROMs again on the Ultra etc etc. - that is why I ordered an unlocked version.
Thanks gents for the guidance here! Best forum around for us phone geeks
If it will be like Note 9 or 10 plus just have to flash the U version csc with odin and it will give you wifi calling advanced..messaging..volte

Much thanks - I will do this then when it arrives.
Did not work for me on the unlocked note 10+. Worked right away on the tmobile.
Att was actually fun to have. Nothing that att expected worked on the unlocked device. For example I had unlimited hotspot, despite it was not included in my att plan.

That's bizarre. I am rethinking this unlocked route. I must have wifi calling since signal at the house is terrible in my area. I don't need the drama of uncertainty if this will work or not. Might as well cancel the unlocked one and just upgrade via att. Oy. Wtf is with att these days? They lost my directv account last year and now their wireless policies are looking like a royal pita.
I don't think you have to worry .... ATT seems to consistently allow Samsung unlocked devices to have carrier functions
You just have to flash the U CSC as mentioned above. Worked for me on Note 10 and is currently working on a s20 ultra device

I strongly recommend switching your order to the ATT model. I got my note 10+ unlocked based off the suggestions found here saying that flashing the att firmware would give me all the features, and I've been through a year of headaches.
For a little wile i was able to enjoy wifi calling, voicemail and VOLTE, but after my first software update the features were lost. i was able to get them back briefly by putting my sim back in an old Att phone and keeping it for a day or two, but that trick never lasted past a week. I've tried re-flashing the software, switching back to unlocked and then back to ATT, basically anything i could think of and it never worked.
calling ATT didn't help either, as the reps gave me a canned line about not supporting outside phones. the whole reason I'm updating to the 20 ultra is to just get my phone fully functional with an ATT model

Thanks darth. Yeah, I switched to the att version. Hate the hidden tracking bloatware etc that comes with it but must have a very workable phone for daily work calls and wifi calling is a must. No drama is my motto these days. Thank you for reporting your experience.
I had the same situation with my unlocked Pixel 4 XL, keep calling ATT until I got the right person to modify my sim to allow WiFi Calling to work, that's my plan when I get my unlocked 20 Ultra.
I'm not a gent, but I doI have the Note 20 Ultra in for review and am using it with an AT&T SIM. VoLTE works, no option for WiFi calling.

What worries me is the 5G. Will unlocked work for ATT 5G?
It does on my unlocked Galaxy S20+ 5G. The Note 20 Ultra is a ways to release and their system doesn't yet correctly identify the IMEI, so I can't say for sure what will happen after release day.

Hi Lisa,
Your reviews are the best, so thank you first of all. Can you check if it has any eSIM capabilities? Supposedly S20 was going to get an update to allow eSIM use in US but that never happened...
Thanks . I'm not seeing anything under connection settings on our US unlocked Note 20 Ultra (there's no IMEI listed or cellular network option listed under connection settings when no nano SIM is installed. EsimClient is running on the phone, which makes me think the hardware must be there. EsimClient is not running on my GS 20+ unlocked.

Great, thank you for checking and comparing with S20+ !
eSIMClient running gives me hope that we will get eSIM support in an update...Still perplexed how or why Samsung has gone out of the way to disable eSIM on US variants when Apple, Google support it.

Ha! Thanks Lisa (love your tech vids!!) - I switched to the ATT version. Supposed to be here 8/21. I can't take a chance with wifi calling being borked, or that just that I may need to Odin-flash updates or CSC packs periodically to keep up with the monthly patches (ie force an unlocked unit to keep working on ATT's network if my previous firmware gets overwritten etc. I mean). I guess as I got older I went from a tech pioneer and adopter to just an end user LOL.... I just need it to work. Maybe I can do that package remove thingy and chop the bloatware periodically... we shall see once the community gets these units and starts their dev magic for us.
I guess I will need to make an appt at the local ATT store in a week to get on a new 5G plan from my current 4G one to take advantage of the coming speeds.
You're welcome- glad you enjoy our vids! With AT&T, you can simply change your plan online, no need to visit a store. The mid and high tier unlimited plans include 5G.

Could you tell me more. I have the US unlocked note 20 ultra, I put an AT&T sim in (from my note 9 unlocked) and I can't find an option to turn on wifi calling. I pretty much gave up on feature like this, because I would rather have the unlocked phone, but if it works now maybe I am missing something.

AT&T vs Unlocked US version

Are there any differences (Hardware like LTE, 5G Band differences or software differences) between AT&T and US Unlocked versions?
Hardware should be no difference. Radio bands should be the same. Software is different. The unlocked comes without carrier bloatware.
That is correct. The software is the only difference. I had the Samsung Note 10+ unlocked on AT&T. I couldn't get WiFi call or HD voice. This time I went the Note 20 Ultra AT&T version. Not a big deal. I just remove the bloatware from the phone using ADB. You can find articles on how to do it.
Weird that I was told by VZW that I couldn't wifi call on the unlocked version. But I can.
I had the U1 version on ATT. Worked great. Some menus missing, such as ability to choose VOLTE butncall quality was great. Has to call ATT to change to a 5g plan for 5g.
By the unlocked version, are you referring to the SM-N986B/DS? I am researching as well and I am on the AT&T network.
Edit: my bad misread title.
I had a U1 N10+ and as someone else mentioned, no wifi calling or HD Voice (VOLTE). Even flashing the U firmware. ATT typically has to Whitelist your phone to unlock those features. Running the U would unlock Video Calling (useless unless the other person is also on ATT) and Advanced Messaging (also an ATT only service). The day I got my N20Ultra, I popped my ATT activated sim, and no VOLTE / HD voice, and no wifi calling. Being on U1, the rest of the features weren't available (video calling, advanced messaging, vvm) which isn't surprising since it's debranded.
In another thread, it showed that Factory Unlocked N20Ultra will have HD Voice hut NOT wifi calling. That's fairly new, so YMMV. Saw the post earlier this week. Not sure it's it's live already or in the works. Some phones had support for WiFi calling and HD Voice, but the N20 series were showing only HD Voice at time of article.
I've since dumped att for Metro (Tmobile) for a few reasons, but primarily their reluctance for fully support a factory unlocked device. They are making a step in the right direction, but honestly, VOLTE and WiFi Calling should be standard features supported. Like why wouldn't you want me to call on wifi instead of clogging the wireless towers? Both work OOTB with Tmobile.
Edit: If you have no plans to switch carriers, I'd get it through att. Even if you run U1 for now, you can change your mind later and know all the features will work on U. If you buy factory unlocked, and need WiFi calling, there's no guarantee it'll work even if you load U firmware. In the past, the device has to have the IMEI specifically whitelisted on their end.

I spoke to AT&T for hours and they whitelisted my international Note20 Ultra IMEI. I still don't have Wi-Fi calling and they absolutely don't know why... I regret switching from T-Mobile to AT&T... but unfortunately have to stay with AT&T for 2 more years because of iPhone deals we got...
Guys, all you have to do is flash the U Home CSC for and you'll have all the features on ATT and still have U1 firmware on your U1 device. At least for me on this phone and two previous, the Samsung devices were already "whitelisted" with ATT

No. If you're on the AT&T version, stay there.
I can't believe AT&T would whitelist all Samsung Unlocked devices, that would really surprise me. You can buy AT&T locked Galaxy phone and unlock it with AT&T since you bought it outright, and then of course it would be whitelisted.
Still Less Features for Factory Unlocked Models?
Read through this thread and tried digging around in all other logical forums and it seems that it's still the case that one cannot get WiFi calling on AT&T with a Factory Unlocked model?
Asking because Amazon is selling the Note 20 Ultra 512GB Factory Unlocked today for $1,200.
Found a Reddit thread that has people stating there will be a Samsung update that addresses this.
Have seen various posts in various places about flashing file(s)/ROM to enable this.
Any authoritative answer as to whether WiFi Calling (and Voice Over LTE) can be enabled on AT&T with a Factory Unlocked Note 20 Ultra? Or authoritative assurance it will, soon?

They cannot. Att and att based subsidized carriers. Do not allow byod on votle or wifi calling. I have a trick to make it work for a couple hours. So I know its possible. But after a few hours their systems reprovision your device and shut them back off.

Too bad. Thanks for the reply. Feel better about passing up the sale especially since it will probably be a common sale price during Xmas sales.
And WiFi Calling is too important a feature to trade for a discount of a hundred or even two.

Yea. If you provision volte and wifi on a actual att phone and sim swap they work for a while. Usually around 4 or 5 am. Then it shuts off and never works again. Till sim swap and reprovision
VoLTE on unlocked Samsung S20 and Note20 series phones is set to "on" by default, but unchangeable (greyed out). As of right now, there is no ability to select WiFi calling until Samsung decides to grace those of us with unlocked phones that ability.

There is a long term method but it involves calling att, and getting your IMEI registered so you can get VOLTE and wifi calling. Ask customer service. I can't remember the name of the department you need to request. It takes a couple of weeks and then you suddenly get a weird sms (something like IMEI provisioned) and then it works. Did it on note 9.

A71 5G (T-Mobile) unlocked on H2O wireless. How do I get rid of T-Mobile software?

Basically, title. I thought the phone would change to possibly AT&T since H2O is a MVNO that uses their network... Should I just flash U1 firmware? If so, how to do that without losing data is possible.
This won't totally get rid of it but you won't see the icons anymore and it will be disabled:
You can disable almost anything with the command below:
from adb use: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 <package_to_disable>
leave off the brackets. Get the actual package name by using My APK pro app to find actual name.
I don't think you would want to flash a different carrier ROM onto the phone - likely asking for trouble in a number of functions.
You may flash the unlocked stock variant of the ROM through ODIN, as described in: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/sm-a716u1-5g-firmware-for-us-models.4144387/
I am running it the latest version of it. It is great and no carrier bloat. Samsung bloat is of course....present.

Hi, on a related matter, ATT is telling me that my unlocked TM A71 is incompatible with their network (after 3G sunset) because it is not VoLTE capable. TM support site says VoLTE is on by default but no menu options are provided to enable or disable. Anyone know whether this issue can be resolved using the stock ROM?
I'm having the same issue. With a TMobile csv. Any ideas? Is there a way to get a att csv rom? So that volte is enabled?

Don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot -- I took my SIM and put it in my old 4G phone, got it going, then put the SIM back in the A71. It's still working, in fact I'm sending this message from it. Keeping my fingers crossed.
UPDATE, 03/20/22: My phone stopped being able to send or receive calls a couple days ago, so apparently my workaround was short-lived. It is still able to send and receive SMS and MMS and provide hotspot. For now, I've forwarded all inbound calls to my GV #, but when this current month's plan comes close to an end, I'm ditching AT&T for Verizon.
UPDATE, 7/20/22: Apparently an OTA update from TM fixed the issue with my phone not working on the ATT network. Some weeks ago it started working; I hesitated to mention it here thinking it could stop working at any minute after the back and forth with ATT I posted about earlier, but it's been close to 3 months now.
My A71 5G was a Sprint version and T convinced me to SIM swap and it installed that hideous magenta boot screen and that T jingle. When I rebooted I was mad. They should warn you.
My phone was unlocked, network wise, so....
I cross flashed the U1 US Unlocked firmware with patched ODIN and it turned out great.
What carrier are you with now? TM? I can't use TM where I live because their coverage blows (TM 5G slower than ATT 3G), to the point where it's unusable. BTW, Sprint also sucks where I live.

I bought a second hand used Samsung Galaxy A71 5g from a vendor here. My local network won't work on the phone, telling me it's locked. The phone runs on a Snapdragon chip.
I'm really desperate about unlocking the network, how to i go about this?

You're probably going to have to buy a network unlock code. Or try and get in contact with the original seller and explain the situation. Usually the original owner of the phone can request a network unlock code from their carrier if the phone is fully paid off.

Question U1 VS Carrier Firmware

I have a TMO S22U and basically I immediately flashed to U1. I'm just curious are there any advantages I'm missing out on being on U1 opposed to T-Mobile U? I know there probably aren't many but I'm just curious.
Some say U1 us better. I'm At&t so probably someone on Tmo will chime in. But for me, U1 offered nothing over U. I mean yes no At&t bloat but I can disable what I don't want on U to get the desired affect.
My biggest thing was the T-Mobile splash screen, it sounds SO DUMB but flashing to U1 made it literally 100% Samsung for me I'm just wondering what could have been lol
The only thing I heard, but I am not certain about is that you lose the TMO visual email capability. Otherwise I have not heard anything else. I am on TMO and I kept mine on U. As butchieboy said, I just disable what I do not want. In all reality, there is not much from TMO that is loaded on the system side. More of the bloat is from Samsung and Google.
Thanks for the speedy replies guys much appreciated
One thing I noticed when I did the same thing, was I could not get 5G Ultra Capacity to work. Not certain I was doing anything wrong, just wouldn't work for me.
I think I read somewhere that you do get it, but there is no icon for it in the U1 image. It will show 4G LTE. Check your download speeds.

I did, 2 days apart in the same spot, the icon showed 5G as did the speed test connection type, but the speeds were much slower than 5G UC, almost 400 Mbps difference. Switched the firmware, back to the insane, almost WiFi type speeds.
Did you check the mobile networks setting to make sure 5G is available and selected?

Yes, that was my first thought. It never quite worked the way I should have.
preinstalled crap apps on tmo firmware
The main benefit for me on the unlocked firmware is the built in called id and spam blocking. For att you have to pay extra and tmobile has it on its best plan. But still think it works better than tmobiles implementation. And since i change carriers often i like to always have caller id and spam blocking no matter which one i use.

Can I ask what specific firmware you used to flash to unlocked?

I downloaded the S980U1UEU1 firmware which on the latest update ends with AVCK. Used Frija to download it
Carrier firmwares usually get updated a week before the u1 series does.

Would've just been a considence. U1 firmware does connect to 5G UC just look at the service menu and it'll confirm if your connected to N41 or not.
But I moved back from u1 to tmv U firmware due to having weird call /sms issues where it would just stop working and only fix was a reboot. Hasn't happened since switching back to U firmware.
Here's an interesting question..
I was on TMO and I bought a S22U from TMO (unlocked it with them afterwards) and of course it was on 5GUC and everything (I used ESIM). I got another sim (Mint Mobile) and when used as primary it would show 5G+
After a while, and just out of spite of the hideous 4G LTE TMO icon I Flashed the U1 firmware.. I'm no longer using TMO as I ported my number to Mint and it has been good.. Would it make sense to return to TMO U firmware or should I stay in U1 as Im no longer using the TMO sim?

Probably fine on U1. You're no longer connecting to anything advantageous besides updates being slightly faster with U.
I'm with T-Mobile, but purchased mine directly from Samsung.. I have the S22 Ultra U1. Since my last phone purchased from T-Mobile A52 5G. biggest change, No daily spam calls or text.. What a difference that makes.. With T-Mobile, their so called Spam blocker was notihng more than a spam attractor. Plus no more of the hidious bloat and splash screen..
I have the unlocked and I dirty flash switch between U and U1 depending on which newest ROM is out. There's absolutely no difference save for the annoying TMOB splash screen and that it says UC ... But from my extensive testing the speeds are the same whether it says 5G on the U1 or 5GUC on the U.
