General First Impressions (24h) - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Hello.
I pre-ordered my S22 Ultra on February 11th and received it on the 15th, I don't know why but Samsung decided to send it to me before the 24th.
I've had it for more than 24 hours now and I'd like to share a first opinion with you.
I specify that it is an Exynos 8Gb 128GB model
A big update from samsung is needed.
I don't feel like I have a phone over 1000€, lots of bugs, the phone run very slowly sometimes and gets a little warm.
Ram management is very bad, many applications close in the background
Regarding the battery, it's a disaster, barely 4 hours SOT and I have 20% left.
I am in dual Sim and almost all the time in WIFI and no 5G, I will try a new cycle with a single SIM card.
For the photography part I didn't do a lot of tests but my first opinion is positive, the photos seem to be of very good quality.
The night shots are great too.
I hope that samsung will soon bring updates because for the moment I'm disappointed.

Congrats on receiving it early! Hopefully the bugs can be resolved with an update. Which phone did you upgrade from as a comparison?

I come from a oneplus 8 pro and he is faster than the S22.

You're one lucky man to have it already!
Can you try to enter developer mode and check how low it goes in terms of refresh rate in different scenarios (e. G. home screen, static image, aod)
Thanks in advance!

It's simple there are only 2.
As soon as I touch the screen it's 120hz and otherwise it goes down to 24hz, it never goes below.
edit : on AOD it's 60hz all the time

Thanks. I've been looking for such straightforward answer for few days!

I received mine on February 11th. It's the 256gb/12gb EU version.
The phone have soft (when I spam the lock button, it eventually recovers) frozen twice in this period but I think this was caused by Nova Launcher, haven't froze since I went back to OneUI launcher.
I previously had S20+ and the battery is much better on S22U. Same heavy usage through the day but when I hit the bed its still at 50%. S20+ was at 0% couple of hours before bedtime. Haven't noticed any other slowdowns, heat problems or RAM management errors. Camera feels OK but the colours look better on S21U when compared side-by-side.
But for adaptive refreshrate - Using the default keyboard and writing an email or something, the refreshrate really comes way down to a point when the keyboard feels really sluggish lol. Nothing that an update couldn't fix.

You've had the phone for a day. Battery tests are complete nonsense and inaccurate until at least a week into using the device.

Somehow I think that most people forget that when a device is just fresh out of the oven it takes about a week to learn your usage patterns and charging patterns. ALso most manufacturers publish a OS update almost when it is launched due to bugs and whatnot. I remember when S21 ultra came out it was buggy as hell. Give it a week and you might be surprised. Also remember that there are lots of settings that need to be tweaked like power management, charging optimization, etc.

Put the screen brightness to max for a moment and see if the refresh rate goes down to 1 hertz. Please

You guys might have got production models U weren't supposed to get via some glitzch. I'd check it out.

Since last night I'm starting to have a problem with OneUI launcher.
When I'm on the home screen or app drawer, the screen goes black and the phone locks.
It happens approximately every 2 minutes and I don't have this problem with any other launcher.
See the attached video.
EDIT : the problem was related to a specific app (crypto.com). I uninstalled it and I no longer have this problem.

There is always a big OTA when the device launches. It has always been this way with Samsung devices. Trust me. Had the same on my S5, S7, S8, S9+, S10+, S20+ and S21 Ultra.

Got mine this morning, 12/256 exynos, already having some bugs

Same here, the crypto. Com app requires the fingerprint and when it does it takes me to the lockscreen, I need the app though and can't uninstall it

After 24 h. Anyone have/seen a problem with coloring the rounded line after even a slight tilt of the phone? The information there becomes unusable due to illegibility.

Galaxy S7 Issues! Immediate help needed Please

I'm new to Android. I've an S7 Exynos version that I bought recently. But it wasn't a pleasant experience as I expected from last year's refined flagship. Having some little annoying issues made me to think whether I should return device and get a replacement within the 7 return day return period that is gonna end by FRIDAY 18/3/2016.. Here are some issues I'm seeing with my S7 Exynos version[tried my best to make it to the point ],
I've an 100mbps network. The WiFi speed is not as expected. My G4 easily pulls off near 90mbps while S7 always end up in a bit less around 80mbps. Is this an hardware issue or just touchwiz problems?
I was using MXPlayer and then browsing a bit in chrome and pressed home button and then device completely froze(video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1UChZaaw58) immediately after a short stutter. Searching the web to find a solution, I found that pressing vol.down+power to restart will help. I see from the the websites that not many people have/had this issue. So, Is this something part of a defective unit?
Screen is turning on when receiving an text(SMS) message. No other notifications are affecting it. Is this an Touchwiz thing?
Occasional wakeup delay. This has been discussed in another thread and acknowledged as this mostly can be the problem caused by the SD Card. I've an 128GB Samsung Evo+ card. Not sure still it's caused by that high class SD card or IS IT?
Idle temp being 29C. Sometimes just browsing for very short period of time can raise it by 30C. Is it normal?
Also please refer to this spreadsheet(https://goo.gl/IXSw7N) with the data of battery and temperature values in gaming session as well as streaming session. The device's metal sides did get hot for touch. Kindly say whether everything is normal considering both temperature and battery decline . (Please note that the CPU temperatures are measured with this app https://goo.gl/qD8ToR , don't know how far it's accurate)
In outdoor situations S7 seems to mess up the color saturation by adding a bit white-ishness to the display making the blacks look black a bit more greyish. Is this is how it'll react to bright light?
I see only 2 cores being idle in device's idle state. Is this how it'll be?
When receiving a notification the LED first turns up red and then some other color. Again, TouchWiz thing?
Having an SD Card notification every time I restart the device. Part of Marshmallow?
Expecting a quick reply. Thanks
1. must be your router, mine is flying at 300mbps
2. i had one freeze in twitter the other day, never had it in my previous phone, im sure future software updates will fix this issue
3. try googles messenger, maybe the stock one is waking up the phone for whatever reason
4. using the same evo+ card, no delay here, again maybe future updates will fix this
5. 30c is nothing, other phones idle higher than that
6. completely normal, other phones heat up just as much if not more
7. try a different display mode, the stock adaptive one most likely changes based out outside lighting
8. i notice 2 cores sleeping while the other 6 cores are idling
9. i noticed the same thing, not sure whose at fault
10. dont restart?

Have you tried a factory reset. It's usually the first thing I do when I receive a new phone.

Thanks for the quick reply @peachpuff
1. I haven't configured QoS or anything in my router to get this type of effect only in my S7 while my other devices including couple of other android devices and laptops works fine. Any idea?
2. By 'freeze' you mean the same kind of 'freeze' I experienced with the device as in the video? That is the device getting unresponsive to anything like even capacitive button touches, home button press and power button long press?
4. No delay in your device? Here is my delay(video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXWhSjNDATA). Then, Could this be device's hardware issue?
PS: While 'Poweramp' is running in background there is no delay in waking the device. How is that?
6. Yeah. You are right. Other device idle higher than that. Can be the metal edges getting the heat easily felt by hand. What's your device idling at using the same temp. app(if in case it makes any difference)?
7. You didn't encounter any such circumstances @ outdoors?
8. Maybe I used a wrong technical term in the question. Anyway here is the pic of CPUs at idle state(https://goo.gl/37GqAX). Normal?
10. LOL. You have the same issue? Try restarting and check pls.
Expecting a quick reply. Thanks
2. yes it was a hard freeze, but holding the power button for 5 secs turned it off.
4. mine wakes up way quicker
6. mine is at 26c, but you're in dubai, its a bit hotter there
7. haven't noticed that, but again maybe the sun is a wee bit stronger where you are
8. mine is identical, scroll up and down quickly and the last 2 cores will wake up
10. yes i see the notification after every reboot, but i rarely turn the phone off and it doesn't come back

2. Mine didn't turn off as in the video even I had pressed it for about 10 secs. How is this case different? You have auto-restart enabled?
3. So could this be an issue with device or anything related to the high speed SD Card? Also here is an interesting fact I found out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ii5GgSBktI
BTW it's not that hot here it's just 24C
How did you get it to unfreeze then, did it unfreeze by itself? Holding the power button for 5-10 secs should always power down the phone no matter what.
Are you using an sd card, does the same thing happen without one?

I used vol.down+power as mentioned in the OP to restart.
I will check now without SD card even though some users had reported that it didn't make any difference.

There's a thread about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/help/galaxy-s7-slow-to-wake-t3326304 haven't looked through it but the last resort would be to either flash the stock image or do a factory reset, delete your google accounts before you do this.
Would doing that void my warranty? Can't I just get a replacement?

7. This is Normal. Since the Galaxy S6 Samsung has decided to add a feature that literally makes your screen Brighter even manual Max brightness when in direct sunlight to make it easier to see the phone through the super reflective glass. I think this is only done on Adaptive Display setting and it also makes colors brighter and saturated differently. Dark Red on youtube for instance will look more like a bloody bright Cherry red. For example.
Try switching the Display mode to see if it will turn that feature off.

I actually posted about this.
My phone feels hot to the touch when just browsing the web, and it drains my battery.
How do you check your phone temp?
I just have GSAM battery monitor app and it tells you the battery temperature but i dont know if that is the same as what you're measuring

Use CPU Temp( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yanyan.cputemp&hl=en ) for both CPU & Battery Temp. Also don't use GSam as far as now(without root) It's completely useless and will be simply running in the background. BTW I've excellent battery life, near 6hours SOT.

Hmm I didn't know about GSAM. Actuallt I just noticed that my SOT in the stock battery settings is 3 hrs 50 min but GSAM is reporting 5 hrs!! What the heck.
Okay I'll install CPU Temp.
My phone is getting warm already just by typing this reply. Im thinking something is up with the cores. It shouldnt be using a fast cpu speed for web browsing right?

A real 2 day charge phone. Murdering this thing with YouTube does nothing. Almost 9 hours sot now and 40 percent left? 2nd half is draining slower cause there was heavy usage in first half of change. Setting up and so on

For me it doesn't bother me much.. I don't want netflix or anything like that so having "HD" doesn't matter to me.(Its L3 instead of L1 like the global version) I don't use OK Google so that part doesn't bother me.. Only thing that bothers me thats in both global and china and they will be fixing it soon is that you can't change the launcher. So far though everything else is basically the same. I don't really notice the chinese and its rare in menus but it is on the front lock screen.

Basically on my phone, I manually disable all apps background activity and only allow those like email, WhatsApp, etc to operate in the background.

Question Battery life since the last update

All was so good,
I was able to hold 2 days with my use (it was incredible, with my s10 I held 24h).
And, then, last update...
And now, in one night of sleep 25-30% of drain ??? Oo
What is that Samsung ? Are you aware like u destroy ur product with this... especially when you advertise about the terrific battery life of the s10 plus ?

I had my S10+ that ever had bad battery life, my s21+ looks like is much better, having 25% of drain in standby means there is an app that is causing that, when you talk about your last update, you should explain which version of firmware do you have now.
My T-Mo USA S21+ gets really great battery life. No change with the latest (AUAG) USA firmware. My S10 got very good battery life (24 Hrs +) but the S21+ (so far) gives me 2 days with MANY hours of screen on time.
Here's a partial dump of a discharge to 10%:
I'm using the exynos variant. I bought the phone on 13th Feb. The battery life is really realty bad for a 4800mah device. I was getting a expecting a decent battery life. But I'm getting like 4.5hrs SOT for 10.5 hours usage which is like half of what snapdragon verison is giving. This sucks. Should have waited for op9pro. Made a huge mistake.!!

Did you use it 60hz refresh rate ? This is insane battery life . I'm getting nowhere near this !!
I'm getting 2h SOT if I'm lucky, on AUB9.
Really wondering where those big differences between different users come from...

No, that is with Adaptive Motion Smoothness (120Hz) turned on.
I thought maybe my AOD was adding too much Screen On time, giving me a very misleading value, so in one of the tests I made i just played a few movies, and I still got hours and hours of battery life. I have no idea why there is such a variance.
Edit: So I thought of two things to mention. I run my screen brightness at about 35%. If you run yours much higher, that could effect your results significantly. If you use your phone outside a lot and it's set to automaticly adjust its brightness, that could set the screen brighness very high (for when you're outside). Also, I have bluetooth turned off.
2nd Edit: I ran another test last night and I'm surprised to report that there was no significant difference at full screen brightness versus my normal 35% brightness. I had Netflix playing for 3 hours at normal brightness followed by 3 hours at full brightness and the slope of the battery level curve is essentially the same. I'm at a lost to explain this as well as it's been my experience that screen brightness significantly affects power usage.
fwiw
My battery life seems okay but charging is very slow. I've never had so much trouble getting up to a full charge

I use it outside about 2 hrs a day. That too usage. Only for changing the song. Nothing more . I use dual sim .listen to music atleast 1 hour a day via Bluetooth. Even then what you are getting is truly amazing.

I did some tests the other night and much to my surprise turning up the screen from my usual 35% to full didn't make much of a difference.
I'm in the habit of using the "Close all" function in the recent apps screen almost all the time. Maybe that makes a difference?
I'm trying all the scenarios to reach that level of battery life but I go out for atleast 3 hrs a day. So I use my phone in mobile data as well. That also contribute. Yeah closing all applications all the time prevent unnecessary background process. That may actually help in apps like Twitter and Instagram.
Here is the latest I have managed . I removed one of the sim and used carefully . This is the best I have managed so far. But again, I use it outdoors with mobile internet for atleast an hour of screen time. 3 hours of outdoor usage . I'm still not sure if it's a good battery life but I will take it.
As a new S21+ owner I can say that I have had great battery life so far consistently getting 7.5-8 sot. This is with the latest march update.

Hi. Looking at your screenshot, it seems you are using an Indian variant. I do not want to get into specifics, but Indian networks are far more congested compared to other countries. So the modem has to work 4 times as hard compared to say the US. Also, dual sims nearly halve the standby time. So the usage you have is fine and I wouldnt worry too much about it.
Have anyone tried disable auto optimize app daily and disable adaptive battery.
Some say it really improve the battery on the previous samsung gen. I'm going to try it. And report to all of you guys.
Just came up to xda to search about anything related to battery and didn't find the solution yet.
Sometime I got a good battery like about 6 hours sot. The other day it just to bad only around 4 hours. It seems auto optimize overreacting to apps and make it closed and open daily causing a worst battery live. And the adaptive battery just seems not good at all in some report.
My best so far today, 10h of SoT doing mostly multimedia stuff. Exynos, 4G, 60Hz, April update. No power saving mode.

Johnny... please show us some new stats. Will it work around 15 hours with normal/medium usage? I'm afraid this battery... just battery ;/
Hi,
Normal/medium usage is different for everyone.
All I can say, is I was worried about be the battery size, but it has got me through the day just fine.
Depending on what apps I'm using and light gaming, I've been getting around 3.5 to 4.25 hours of screen on time.
I've averaged 16-22 hours of use even with my smart watched connected for around 6 hours a day.
We have to remember though, this is an early software version, so may improve over time.
For now battery life is very disappointing for me. Came from pixel 5 when I could leave the house with half the battery left and not worry. However, I am sure this can be improved but need some suggestions based on the below. I have google play services and carrier services that are draining quite a lot. Any idea how to pin those down/improve?
EDIT: clearly me being stupid after too much work. that's usage over the last 7 days and not 24 hours.... still battery life for me leaves something to be desired for now. I do lots of calls for work. after taking off the charge at 7am, I had to plug the phone back in at 6pm. will report towards end of the week to see if anything improves
Any news after few days of using?
Horrendous for me still after clearing caches and even turning off location. Google play services is at the top.
I need to charge twice a day. Comparing to Note 20 Ultra it's very disappointing. I am thinking about returning my Flip.

Yea. Mine lives on the charger. I get better life from my Galaxy Book. I'm assuming this will be fixed. I've seen a couple cases where people said they had better life on the Fold than note.
Had the Flip 3 for just over a week now.
Battery for me was acceptable yesterday, fair amount of camera use (mainly on 4G), and today so far is decent (mainly WiFi). At 80%, with 50mins SOT.
the only thing that did it for me was turning off 120hz refresh rate. sticking with 60hz visually hurts but it improves battery life a lot. it is now capable of getting me through the whole day easily and lasting around 24hrs. SOT is around 3 hours.

No, more a moderate user. A couple of short WhatsApp video calls, 20 text message, some light gaming, 20-30 photos, and maybe 30-60 mins on Chrome.
I have 2 accounts for Google/Gmail syncing.

Not terrible for me . It's not the best, but good enough for me. Gets me through the day, even when on the mobile network.
I have some back ground Sammy apps disabled like Bixby.
It has definitely improved over the last couple of days.
screenshot attached now. again, this is with 60hz only.

Could try the app in the mods section, set it to 96 refresh rate.
I'm going to give it a go, and try setting it up with 96Hz, and 48Hz idle.

thanks, I will give it a go in about a week. just want to see a little more how it deals with my regular working week when I am always on the phone. will post later once i've checked that.
why 96 though and not 90?

90 not available, 48, 60, 96 and 120 are the options
Am I the only one losing 30 percent after an hour of SOT? Not even using the big screen? Almost all apps are asleep too. Absolutely nuts. I'm gonna have to carry a battery with me if I ever take this on vacation. It can't last a work day. I hit 30 percent before 11am from 85.

Question Pixel 6a - Thoughts at the end of day 2

So you know where I'm coming from, I upgraded from a 3a, but so far...?
The fingerprint reader is ace, and works no matter how sweaty my finger might be. No issues at all. It just works.
Screen is great, and far better than the 3a when it comes to colour temp.
Battery is big! From 100% to 15% today, day 2, and I've managed 7.5 hours SOT. That's with YouTube videos, browsing, a few hours of podcasts over Bluetooth.
Tensor is fast. I mean an abacus is fast compared to the 3a, but still, this thing is smooth, and the phone isn't even notably warm https://nox.tips/ https://xender.vip/.
And finally, this thing feels big compared to the 3a, but way more premium. It doesn't feel cheap.
So while there's lots of negative reviews out there from tech reviewers, hopefully you can find balance in the voice of a normal phone user.
Also coming from a 3a (XL though) I agree on how premium this feels (and is) comparatively. The screen is absolutely improved and the SOC is night an day better.
Thats said, FP under the screen sucks....I REALLY wish this still had the rear mount physical sensor. While I havent had the same nightmare stories others have this is no where near as good a FPR as the 3a was.
Battery is less vs my 3a XL but that had a lot bigger batter vs the normal 3a. Heat is a mixed bag, sometimes its unnoticed and sometimes it gets very toasty. Its a lot better now with my current kernel vs stock, but with added power comes added heat.
All in all though, yes depending on what device youre coming from this is a LOT better. This isnt a premium, flagship device and people need to stop comparing it with them. Its also not a cheap Chinese brand with questionable everything. This is the nicest "A" series device Ive seen/used.
had pixel 6a for 2 weeks, coming from a rugged phone with 5800mah battery, so for me pixel6a battery looks ridiculous, sorry google

I've found battery to be mediocre at best. 6-6.5 hrs onscreen over 12 hours or so. Low brightness, just flipping around social media and web and chat. But that is with LTE only, with some or all WiFi would be different story. Deep sleeping fine. Deep sleep drain is pretty crappy as well.

me with normal use, always 5g with optimal reception, lasted 12h from 100% to 10%. Good point with wifi but I had not the possibility to compare
12 hours on 5g is pretty good with this device stock. Make sure if you havent already, to disable adaptive connectivity, and try LTE vs 5G.

Screen on time with 6a? Unbelievable. Wouldn't even come close. All reports, reviews, anecdotal user reports show this isn't possible. I've been testing it thoroughly for last month and definitely impossible.
No screen on time, just my normal phone use, and Google says It lasts 24h, it's not true

Ahhh sorry. Didn't mean to sound like a ****. I could have just asked if you meant screen on time. Thanks for confirming. Yeah LTE and WiFi when possible, if screen on/battery drain is important should make a big difference.
Out of the box this is one of the worst devices I've used in a LONG time. However, my old OnePlus 8 (dd) had to go. Just to charge I had to hold the cord at an angle, and quick charge stopped working. Then random reboots and freezes killed me. I could tell the phone was on its last legs. Same glitches regardless on stock/custom. Battery lost a lot of charge in one year.
Either way after trade in I paid $188. It's a sidegrade, which is totally fine. Most CPUs perform about the same outside of benchmarks. Battery and heat are my only complaints. Hopefully the 8a/9a are better because the rectangular shape, and camera visor have really grown on me.
Deep sleep 2 hours. Use 20 minutes, battery down to 83% :/ Honestly it's just terrible. The phone gets hot just flipping around FB. Otherwise it's fine. I'll hang onto it for a year and trade it in for 7a hoping they get these issues solved somewhat. We'll have a clue with 7 and 7 Pro. The heat I can deal with but battery life is weak. That also I can deal with but just disappointing given the device is great otherwise.

24 hours off the charger with 4h screen on including 50 min of gps, browsing, YouTube, and some music streaming. Battery down to 43% which is acceptable for my needs.

Have found that PIA VPN was burning huge amount of battery... Much better battery life without it. Looking at about 8 hours onscreen over a 20 hours with LTE.
