General rooting questions and problems - Moto G 5G Questions & Answers

Hi there, dunno who to ask - but i will do for a luck. Few questions about root.
1)Non unlockable phone bootloader locked by at&t - can be unlocked by special tools maybe exploits? Developer menu shows selectable oem unlock - but indeed bootloader locked.
Maybe some rooting tools you can advice for sure for 10 Android? Exactly doing from ADB via CMD - showed vbmeta.img cannot be overwritten. Write error.
Is Linux by AT&T so special protected with some SUPER UFO LINUX COMMANDS WHICH NO ONE KNOWS.
iroot and kingoroot apps for windows doesn't work - they don't debug phone - saying cannot connect with installed drivers.
2) ADB question - should it be run from Command line or from Terminal app in windows? Thats very important.
3) Spending more then 10 hours of free time to see and find adb and debug commands with description. I see ADB is not professionally supported - Android studio like circle of damn minded and is for selling learning courses thats what they do at most. Found commands at some old readme on androidfilehost.
4)Waiting for good hackers/rooters and Unlocking fans to do good rooting tool. Know we are supporting you - if someone saying its illegal (most trans-nationally owned by rich 1 nationality bad fame ancient nation from middle east homosapiens who fill case against rooting) - we future minded people will support innovation in way its possible.
I mean what i mean at&t sucks - i won't pay $50 monthly at&t for damn plans to my phone unlock, not i will pay service centers for bug works.
Or maybe if possible - ONE WORKING ROOTING GUIDE WITHOUT NON-RELATED STEPS.
Best Regards to all think and reading.
Nick

You can't unlock bootloaders on AT&T variants, so no root. Trust me I have tried.

What exactly does the locked bootloader prevent?

Noob question I know but I've tried reading up on the subject as much as I can - I still don't fully understand what exactly the locked loader does to this phone (aside from making it more difficult to root) and would really appreciate a brief explanation.
As I understand now the phone can be rooted, ROMs can be loaded (but they have to be specific to the VZW S3 right?), and full recovery options as well. Basically wondering what the disadvantages are and if they're more significant than just a little more work to root/mod the phone? Much thanks!
It prevents root access, you know jail breaking. You can't control your rom. You use the one provided to you by Verizon with all their bloatware. You can't change what software was delivered to you.

A locked bootloader is ultimately intended to prevent you from potentially costing the carrier $money$ by:
Bricking your phone and then playing dumb when you return it for an exchange. (people on xda opening admit to this kind of fraud. kinda sad. you brick it you keep it!, or buy another)
Modifying your phone and then blaming bugs on the carrier. A support vampire.
Assuring content providers they've made exclusive deals with that their content is "secure".
Great Question!
If your phone was a Windows 7 computer....
If you rooted it, you'd have an account with Administrator access.
As for the bootloader... Suppose you wanted to upgrade to Windows 8, even though it hasn't been authorized by your ISP, on this Windows 7 computer with a locked bootloader.
You cant, c:\windows is locked. If you change anything in that directory, your Windows 7 computer will start, but only to display "Invalid System Software Installed! Please shutdown and return this computer to your ISP's store for assistance."
What we have on Verizon, is a phone with admin rights (rooted), where we can't re-install the software needed to boot a different operating system.
If you're interested in more detail on how the hardware prevents the bootloader from being cracked, and what the attack vectors are, you might be interested in the presentation linked from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766638
(And yes I know that c:\windows isn't actually the boot partition on windows. Just trying to make it easier for the OP to understand.)

Thanks that really helped. So in the example of Jelly Bean -sounds like we need to wait for Verizon to release a version of it? Do all custom ROMs as well have to be based off of the VZW file that checks ok with the bootloader?
I'm really only concerned with Jelly Bean (knowing how long VZW takes to release stuff) and that wifi nag screen, I want to punch someone in the nose every time i see it...I will check out that presentation over lunch, would love to learn all about the details.

Weird this is how i understood it as well. I'm coming from the Droid X2 and thanks do DK we had cm9 up and running with ICS but the bootloader was locked down. I took it that bootstrap is a recovery tool that works in a way of when your phone is off and you plug it in you boot up to the bootloader. This would allow you to re-flash a rom if your current one was corrupt.
So in my mind you can run different roms and different android versions its just harder to get them on the phone. But from what i've seen you cant flash a new kernal if the bootloader is locked.
Maybe i miss understood this if so i really would like to know fully how this works
On the verizon gs3 the locked bootloader is keeping us from flashing a custom kernel thru odin...we can root and flash a custom rom / recovery but it has to utilize the stock kernel currently. Our bootloader debacle is nothing like moto devices and I wish folks would stop comparing the 2!

Exactly, what a locked bootloader will allow you to do will vary on different phones and firmwares. I've known some which would not even allow you to flash a recovery.

I really hope we get the bootloader unlocked would love to see cm on this phone with some of invisblek's great kernels. btw will I be able to even usrge "set cpu" to overclock and under clock with verizon stock kernal or can this be done with tweaks in the build.prop file, forgive me if this sounds stupid its been a while and I am a samsung's odin first time user.
Sadly this is the outcome of Americans NOT buying a device without a subsidy from the carrier.
Kind of like whining about NOT getting the best Porterhouse steak when buying with food stamps......
I would love to see an end to carrier subsidies.

Response from Nokia on unlocking bootloader

I can't say I am surprised, but I thought I'd ask and see what they say. Here's an email and the response I received.
Me:
Hello, Before I order the 8, I'd like to know if you provide the means / process to unlock the bootloader for your devices. I typically run stock Android, which I know you provide, but occasionally like to run custom ROM's as well. An unlocked bootloader will allow flexibility, and providing the ability to unlock will gain you a following in the modding community. Thanks!
Nokia:
Regarding your inquiry about the bootloader unlock for the Nokia 8, please be informed that we may not provide this information.
Additionally, please note that unlocking the bootloader for the device will void the warranty and we therefore do not recommend it.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Best regards,
Nokia Mobile Care team
Now, I am really having a hard time coming up with a NEED for the bootloader to be unlocked... unless I need it to flash another region to add bands that aren't available on my device... maybe?

I wouldn't jump ship yet. Fact is, it still may be very easy to unlock the bootloader and gain root, as the device is runing bone stock Android. Frankly, there is not much left that I need root for.
For me, however, the 8 presents a specific problem. I live in the US, and the bands that are listed as supported are missing some LTE bands I really need (12 specifically). I am aware that there are ways to enable available bands for some devices, but I think you NEED an unlocked bl to get that done.
Thats likely a deal breaker for me. :crying:

Just taught to have a little chat with support too...
Maybe there's still a way to flash TWRP without unlocking the bootloader. They did it for example on the Nokia 6 by booting into what they call 9008 port mode (EDL in other words) and flashed the recovery with a tool named MiFlash in that mode. (Link to Nokia 6 thread)

Hi all,
i found an option in Developer Options -> OEM unlocking ->allow the bootloader to be unlocked.
To get developer options tap 8 times "Build number" in About Phone section of settings.
I hope this is the right way for unlocking bootloader.

anyone tried unlocking bootloader via fastboot?
before i get flamed for being a noob, yes i know you need to enter a code or something to unlock bootloaders unlike pixel/google phones.
no harm trying right?
Hmm. I know some devices in my past have not required an unlocked bootloader to allow root, but I'm not savvy enougb to figure out if its possible on this device.
And rooting will NOT void warranty in EU.

I could only get the 8 into Download mode and could not install it as a FastBoot device.
Sure sucks that they seemingly won't allow this. I was interested in a Nokia phone as well. HMD have even said they want their phones to be like the new Nexus. They really need to support the custom ROM community if so!
Ok so, I can get the device to boot into bootloader(download mode) and somekind of a recovery, trough ADB in windows.
But no luck on "fastboot oem unlock" command. --FAILED <remote : flashing unlock is not allowed

If you are in the EU, no unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty. It's protect under EU laws. Someone mentioned that in earlier posts. Unless you are in asia or some other parts of the world where they screw consumers in favor of big businesses.
and if you had read through, there is currently no way to unlock the bootloader on the nokia 8. If there was a way and devs are willing to move over to this beautiful device, i'd get it in a heartbeat.

Why do you think so? Bootloader can be unlocked via Developer settings, and I think there is no special magic preventing this device from rooting.
I would try rooting it by flashing some SuperSU zips or something like that, but I didn't try it yet
Has anyone checked this out? I haven't purchased a Nokia 3.1 but am considering it. I went so far as to create a Nokia account and there is a bootloader unlock apk, as well as an unlock.key that can be downloaded, and there are clear instructions on the Nokia page itself.. Since I don't have the phone, I did not attempt to proceed. However, if the 3.1 qualifies (I don't see why it wouldn't) then getting root should be as easy as following Magisk instructions.
There is even a page for the open source releases.
If I were to get the 3.1, my main objective would likely be to just obtain root. Looks like it should be doable.
Edit - well over 100 views since I posted this but no one has tried to unlock and/or root. I thought that was the purpose of this thread.

That is unfortunate! Perhaps, does activating Developer Options allow to select OEM Unlocking and USB Debuging, then running the Unlocking App? To run step 5 of 5 (see NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS below) you would need to have USB Debugging enabled anyway. Nowhere in the instructions is that mentioned.
FYI - Activate Developer Options: Go to Settings>About Phone and tap Build Number 7 times. Back out to access Developer Options.
Also, I do not have this phone but am interested in it. I cannot confirm if any of the advice I am giving will work, but it is what I would try.
NOKIA INSTRUCTIONS
Introduction
Firstly, we need to validate that the phone you would like to unlock is operated by you. There are a few steps to this, so we ask that you carefully follow all instructions. Let’s get started.
To participate, simply complete the following steps:
1. Please download the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app. You can download the apk from this link and install the apk on your device. If you don’t understand how to install an apk on your device, please do not unlock the bootloader on your device. Doing so will void your phone's warranty and may cause irreparable damage.
2. Launch the Nokia Bootloader Unlocker app and fill your email information and click “Submit”.
3. The app will display a code. Please enter this in the form below along with your email address. Then press "Request to Unlock"
Your bootloader can now be unlocked. Follow the instructions below:
Step 1/5
Check the email you entered during registration. You should receive an email with a message as follows:
Hi, Thanks for requesting the unlocking bootloader. Please download your unlock key from the following link. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Download the unlock key and save it as “unlock.key”.
Step 2/5
Power off your device. Once powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button.
Step 3/5
While keeping the Volume Down button pressed, connect the device to the computer via USB cable. The device will boot into “Download mode”. If you have difficulty, try powering up normally, power off the device again and start back from Step 1.
Step 4/5
Download the following fastboot binary for your OS here.
Step 5/5
Open a command prompt:
Windows: Start > cmd
Mac: Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app
Linux: Terminal
Navigate to the directory where the previously downloaded unlock.key file is saved. Then enter the following commands:
fastboot flash unlock unlock.key
fastboot oem unlock
If successful, you should see the below message:
Unlock success!
Then reboot the device by entering the following command:
fastboot reboot
You are done!
It doesn't work either way. I tried with both those options enabled and disabled but the program always crashes. It's interesting to note that the app itself fails to install through chrome or "Files" app. Gives an error saying "Can't open app". I only managed to install it through ES File Explorer. Could it be because of I bought the phone on a Vodafone store? I can't find the original stock rom to flash, sadly.

I have been researching this and have found that, as of this writing, only the Nokia 8 qualifies for bootloader unlocking. See here. The only thing holding me back from jumping on this Nokia 3.1 is the inability to unlock the bootloader (and maybe the lack of fingerprint sensor.) Hopefully it gets "approved soon".
Currently the oem unlock using the Nokia bootloader unlock only works for Nokia 8
is there a way to root the 3.1 yet successfully? im a noob at this stuff and don't want to screw my phone.

It doesn't matter if you have enabled "OEM unlocking" option in Developer settings, currently Nokia doesn't allow unlocking of bootloader and thus rooting device, unless you are Nokia 8 user. You can try this, but it will crash almost for sure.
As far as I can tell, my bootloader is unlocked. I am a noob of course, but I have been researching this topic for a couple of months now. I could be mistaken in thinking "upload" mode is it, but I can't seem to figure out the difference. Otherwise, I don't know what to do next.

To get to "Upload" mode? Assuming it's the same for the 3.1 Plus-maybe I should have specified that-holding power button and volume up during startup will open "Upload" mode.
You can also use adb with the command "reboot bootloader." For that reason, I think it's the bootloader, but I could be wrong.
Sorry if I was a bit misleading and it is totally different on the Nokia 3.1, I was just some kinda hopeful to actually see people talk about it.

I'm not bringing any sizable programming skills to the table unless somebody wants to teach me real fast.
Hopefully, I bring tidings of great joy. So I got two these Nokia's and they're both locked. to the carrier, Cricket. I suspect they are at least unlawfully locked. . My understanding is you can't lock to used phone especially if it's been sold as a prepaid phone. I believe this falls under the reseller flex policy. I bought it off of eBay from a guy that sells nothing but phones and he's been extremely cagey about what he'll admit to, so I called the carrier. I literally waited an hour and a half on the phone because I am falling asleep and I was on a computer speaker phone so it kept on the time of the call. I only held that long because I had fallen asleep. Anyway since I'm not in a cricket or AT&T customer then don't plan to eitherbe they could care less about me it actually told me they didn't have any information on the phone after I gave them the IMEI number.
My guess is the fcc's not going to do much because it's a trump Administration. So I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with Nokia and well at least they're interesting I think Microsoft paid between 7 and 12 billion to acquire them I recently sold them off for like a box of jujyfruits. Anyway they're committed to customer service so I figure my predicament might give me an in there.
So those unlock codes that it was a link earlier in the post for that's just to unlock the bootloader, right? You know this is a pretty decent phone for a low-end guy I got the newer 3.1 C it's got Cricket's bootloader in bloatware on it,
takes up a ton of space.
I mean it probably won't happen but if Nokia ever goes public again - I think the acquiring companies. Their eye on the prize and they're going to kick some ass. So I'm all in on this let's get this done. If you want I can see what I can do about asking Nokia 4 whatever it's going to take just to keep me a satisfied customer since they know Cricket/ATT isn't following the Obama regs.
Oof... It would be beautiful if Nokia customer support could guide us onto rooting this phone.
its so simple to unlock oem on nokia 3.1 plus. no third app needed. after developer option on -> go to developer option setting -> there is toggle button to on/off developer option , just use that toggle to off it and on it -> press yes for on dev options -> and select oem unlock. that all
It is pretty straightforward once you have unlocked bootloader (not by Nokia). If you want, you can simply dump boot_a or boot_b with SPflash tool, patch in Magisk app, and reflash.
Otherwise you can use my TWRP (NO TOUCH, and has disabled dm-verity). Please note it's only working on build v3.180, updates not supported - as it was only needed for my project.

General T-Mobile (SM-A326U) unlocking rules/terms.

I like rooting my devices as I like having control over them and what they do. The Galaxy A32 5G is no exception so I was disappointed to see that the OEM Unlocking was not even shown in the Developer menu. I did a little research and basically if you got this phone through the 5g Trade-Up promotion (I suspect most did) then you're stuck on stock until April 19th 2023 or later when these phones get paid off. So unless you pay it of sooner or are in the military being deployed overseas, then you're stuck on stock.

I don't think we will ever see it. My A10e still has no OEM unlocking option and its been active for months.

Wait til you get at least 1 bill credit before you pay it off just to make sure the promotional credits are active. But if you do pay off the phone, you'll still receive the promotional recurring device credits as long as that line remains active. Info here if you want to read the details by T-Mobile.

T-Mobile phones can only be carrier unlocked, which I believe is done via the network and IMEI, not through software/boot loader. T-mobile phones can not be OEM unlocked at this time. I am not sure if a carrier unlocked T-mobile dump would get us any closer to a root, and I don't think a dump is possible via the directions you posted since it requires root.

Dumps actually don't require root AFAIK, you sure? Even then, a T-Mobile unlocked person could easily root boot.img with magisk and then pull it.

The dump instructions you linked require root. Is there an updated guide that does not require root? I'm happy to try.
Could we use the info and resources here https://www.getdroidtips.com/stock-rom-samsung-sm-a326u-firmware/
to create an already rooted stock rom and flash it via odin?

It will not work, it will fail due to bad signatures.

Can anyone get a stock unlocked rom build from their phone that has been unlocked by T-Mobile? Even the bootloader.img? We could all flash it and it might work for us.
For example,

working on this.
Any luck?
If this phone (A326U) can't have the bootloader unlocked it is of almost no use to me. I wonder if I can return it.
It will go to fastboot and can be seen via fastboot devices. Issuing fastboot flashing unlock returns
FAILED (remote: 'unknown command')
fastboot: error: Command failed
I suppose this means existing bootloader does not have these commands in it or the missing OEM locking option is preventing the command from running?
Also I am wondering if there is somewhere to buy one that can have the bootloader (like for Metro PCS or other).
T-Mobile indicates they will bring a phone in to their network that can be unlocked but their policies (as mentioned in other threads) preclude unlocking a T-Mobile sourced device that has not been on their network for 40 days or after the 2 year contract if it is a contract purchased phone. An externally sourced phone can be added to their network and unlocked for SIM and bootloader.

Today I used the Samsung chat option on the website and asked for the unlock code for my A32 5G on Metro POS network. They put a ticket in for unlock code request. I'll let you know how it goes!

Moto One 5G Ace - how-to question

Hey here is question. How to install custom , maybe another country firmware to US variant.
Not a librarian version for dummies.
1)I have Windows PC, have phone , cable , downloaded OS image 11 Android for canada , Installed Motorola drivers , ADB. Unlocked bootlader.
2)What to do next - i mean how exactly format phone and after install OS i want?
Will be very respectful for short and meaningful answer.

The guide that explains how to flash stock roms is accurate. You need to convert the xml file and use fastboot to flash the individual pieces. The guide has the details.
Ok i will look for your guide. Just another simple question about complicated, as linux and Android is complicated.
It is not my guide. I followed it and everything worked. In fact I am running the EU channel 11 on my RETUS channel phone using that guide.
What dangers i must avoid to brick my phone.
Ok looking like in future after adb commands.
Saying so: i am making erasing hdd whole Android, and after installing new version what are underwater stones i.e off topic issues known only by professionals only for installing new Android? Any of them. I mean for example wrong architecture OS version, also i know modifying system linux files or their permission making Linux not working, know that he since was hobbying with Linux Mint at usb drives, and was trying to install live Windows 7 on usb but failed . Ha tried that thing - moving from 10 Android att to 11 Android RETCA - nothing worked. Have tried add bands from new rom via flashing radio.img in adb not working too. Do i need to run adb from terminal , not from cmd (command line) in windows? Non-unlockable bootloader by at&t can be unlocked by installing root first with twrp?Any thoughts will be helpfull.
Nick
If you can't unlock, then you can't get root. As far as I know, AT&T bootloaders cannot be unlocked so root in not possible.

So whats so secret in that AT&T protection. Beside that they generate unlock key with md5 or sha algo. Motorola sold them rights to own a phone...what a mess. And for get phone ulocked i must overpay them 3 times for their plans...until some rich jerk will decide eligible my phone for unlocking or not. Do not know how things are in USA - their was same situation in 90s in eastern europe..until beginnings of 2000-s. Got one day in past Nokia 3410 locked to some carrier - moved to other city where there was different carrier with live balance spend tracking on display. Went to radio warehouse (radio stuff market ) got sim unlocking adapter - there was no 3g even it was 2005 - it was like sim to 2 microsims - adapter with metal case for open insert. Pasted another carrier sim and it worked well on locked phone! That was rocking...will do my own research maybe i will find something look like. Take a luck!
Nick
I bought a retail phone from Amazon because AT&T locks the bootloaders of all their phones. If you find a work around, I hope you share it.
