Question Second screen resolution - Motorola Moto G100 / Edge S

Hello,
I attached my G100 to a TV today to watch a movie, figured that should be possible having full Android desktop support.
It works, but the phone automatically chooses 4K resolution, which makes it stutter quite a bit, and the HDMI adapter gets very hot.
I thought I could just switch to full HD, which should take a lot of stress off the device, and would still be plenty for almost all applications. But there doesn't seem to be a menu to change that? Using the ADB "wm size" command just changes the phone resolution, but not the TVs.
I cannot configure anything on the TV itself, and most monitors will just report their capabilities to the connected device, so the option has to be on the smartphone, but either they did not implement that setting or I'm not able to find it.
The Motorola FAQ says something about the "display" settings menu, but I have only options there that change the phones screen settings. When I open settings in desktop mode, the "display" section is grayed out.
Thanks in advance, have a nice day!

Real HDMI: Finally able to Control your HDMI!!

*Credit to gman!!! for his work enabling more control over the X's HDMI port.
"Real HDMI" is now on the android marketplace for $1.99
NO ROOT REQUIRED, WORKS ON 2.1 AND LEAKED 2.2
Finally get control of your HDMI port on your Droid X. This is rev 1.0.3 of the app and will be continuing development down the road.
What is Does:
When HDMI is enabled it sends the output that would normally going to your phone to the HDMI output port. It unfortunatly doesn't allow mirroing of the display. But does let you watch content on your big screen. Ability of content to display properly depends on the ability of the app you are using to scale to large size of TV screen. If uses absolute coordinates for its layout it might not scale properly.
Am going to be putting together a list of what apps work and don't as I get reports from folks.
Quick Help
- Enabling HDMI Output
Hook up your cable to the phone. When connected the “DETECT” button should change to an “ON” button and “HDMI Detected” status should turn to “Yes”.
If it does not, click on the DETECT button and check your cable and TV Settings.
Once the green button displays “ON” you can click the green button to turn the HDMI output on.
Alternatively you can go to the notification bar, and when it says HDMI = OFF, you can click on the notification icon to turn HDMI ON.
- Disabling HDMI (returning to seeing content on phone)
There are 4 ways to disable HDMI output.
#1 When Real HDMI application has focus, you can change orientation of the device.
#2 You can unplug the HDMI Cable
#3 When Real HDMI application in on the screen on your TV, click appropriate location for red OFF button on the screen.
#4 With HDMI on, go to notification bar and click on the notification
- Using Dock Modes
The Application provides the ability to simulate the doc modes for your phone. Selecting the Car Dock will enable the Car Dock Home screen.
Selecting the Media Dock will enable the Media Dock Home Screen.
Clicking Dock Off will restore phone to non-docked status
- Application Problems
Some applications will have problem displaying video to HDMI as they are build with assumptions about screen sizes. They are using fixed layouts and not proper auto sizing layouts as per Android developers guides. Only way to fix those issues is to have the app developer of the application fix their application.
Enabling or Disabling HDMI out while a video is playing can have strange results as the rendering surface size ends up changing mid video. Stop and Start the application and it should be fine.
EDIT: things to look forward to as this is early in development!
- Independent control of audio out (mute, hdmi audio only with no video, etc)
- better HDMI on/offcontrol. Things like shake for on, shake phone for off. Timed enable of HDMI. HDMI on/off based on proximity sensor(I like this one the best so far)
- "snapshots" - idea being to perodically take a snapshot of HDMI out frame buffer and output to the phones screen. to at least give you some better input interface
- the whole "live dual view" thing
- screen orientation issues (getting home screen to be horizontal)
So does this mean blockbuster app might actually be worth a s#*$. Too bad they are filing bankruptcy...wait on netflix app

yeah! haha, too bad! goo netflix!
ohh! and emulators work awesome!
I've BEEN PUTTING OFF PURCHASING A CORD FOR THAT REASON. Might get one now....thanks for the work!!!!!!
1 N 5 PEOPLE R MENTALLY UNSTABLE. IF YOUR FOUR CLOSEST FRIENDS SEEM NORMAL....THEN ITS YOU.
AWESOME!! Been waiting for something like this!
Blockbuster app is currently a no go as they did somethings in the app to make sure it won't work with HDMI on. Am still looking into it. My app doesn't support "Dual View" or "Multi-view" or whatever folks choose to call it. This is basically a limitation in the omap3 chip as it only has one LCD controller in it and can either control the HDMI output or the LCD but not both.
App only works on Droid X as its a specific solution to controlling the hardware/gpu on the droid x. And am doing my best to get around the limitations in the hardware such as the inability of the gfx overlay to do surface scaling.
My goal was to get out an app that worked for everyone without having to root their phone. Now that I have done that am working on features specific to users with root.
For time being my semi-official support thread is over on droidxforums.com under the app section. Over the weekend hope to get a website setup where I can better posts faqs, pictures, tutorials etc.
It is a shame that blockbuster is set on self destruction. I remember going there as a kid...

How come this isn't in the android market? I searched for "HDMI" and "Real HDMI" and nothing comes up.

[Q] for those of you with an hdmi cable

got my motorola micro hdmi to full hdmi cable in the mail today. plugged 'er in and the picture came up right away. however, the whole screen of my xoom is not showing on my tv. i cant find any settings on the xoom to adjust the tv out.
any suggestions?
You're not going to see the status bar.
i know that, but it also cuts off about an inch on each side, and a small part of the top and bottom. its almost as if its zoomed in a little.
Well that's your TV then. Some do that.
ok, that's what i figured. just wanted to make sure there wasn't a setting on the xoom.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Play with the different zoom options on your tv. You might have one that fits the entire image on the screen. This problem is caused because the xoom screen is 16:10 aspect ratio and your TV is 16:9
On my TV I have input settings that allow me to change it to the devices native ratio, or zoomed in on that. Maybe yours will have something similar.
I haven't tested my Xoom on the TV yet, but I know when I had my desktop hooked up to my TV, I had to have special settings for it because it would never display correctly.
OK Find out how to turn off over scan on your TV and it should solve the issue. Having over scan off for HDMI connections also improves image quality so its good to have it off

Hdmi out

Hello,
I bought a mini hdmi cable.and although I have image on tv the colours are not that good and the aspect ratio a little bit weird.
Is there any way to edit hdmi settings?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
I too have this issue, and I have a 2010 top model Samsung LCD HDTV. I've looked around and couldn't find any settings for this. Either ASUS or Google (android) needs to implement HDMI out settings. In the meantime, I suppose we could play around with the color settings on the tv itself for a temporary solution.
I have an Lg 42 from 2ish years ago, it's not top spec, but fairly cheap at the time.
I have a setting on the TV to change the way it scans the input and therefore correct the aspect ratio. it's a function called 'Just Scan' instead of 720p, 1080p etc.... I had to use this when I had a windows7 media center and I was missing the taskbar at bottom of the screen.
This TV also has ability to change colour/brightness etc... settings for each input, so hdmi1 input can have different picture settings from hdmi2 input and so forth
So do check to see what can be done on your TV settings to make it play nicer with the Transformer.
I also have some occasionnal problems when connecting to my 47" TV,mostly the honeycomb status bar is cropped at the bottom.Don`t know if its a problem with the tv or the tf.Maybe a software update can help with those issues...
try changing the aspect ratio on your TV to Point by Point. I had to do that on my TV for my PS3 and my laptop.

Resolution Scaling

On the surface pro desktop, I used to be able to drop the resolution and it would scale to fit the screen. Now when I drop the resolution you see black borders around the desktop. Desktop was dropped to 1366x768 and is in the middle of the display non-scaled with black borders. It used to work, scale. I don't think I changed anything. Anyone else having this issue with the pro? does yours scale to fill screen?

Sounds like a display setting/video card driver/bios option - same thing happens on laptops if set to not stretch display.

That's what i'm saying, but there doesn't seem to be any options to turn the scaling back on, it was working, then now it's not, nothing loaded, just desktop. >.>

UPDATE: Figured it out, Really stupid Bug.... if you press f7, and then select pc screen only display, lower resolutions will not fill LCD, if you use duplicate the second screen it will expand to fill lcd.
Why.. just.. why!? How did that get by Q&A!?
You can update to newer graphics drivers. I posted this as well on a reddit:
"I think this could help you out:
downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22375&lang=eng
This is the latest driver for the HD 4000. Looks like it just hasn't been pushed out via Windows Update for some reason. I haven't seen any issues using it, but it does enable the advanced graphics settings. It looked like the scaling was done appropriately with this driver after install automatically. If you change the resolution and it doesn't scale full-screen, do the following:
1) right click on desktop 2) Go to "graphics properties" 3) Under Display->General Settings you can change the option under Scaling (this is also can be done by pressing <Ctrl><Alt>F11 **remember to press Fn and F11 on a type/touch cover to actually press F11)"
I am supposed to set that settings to "Scale full screen" But that option is not available. There is only "Maintain display scaling" in the drop list.
Found a solution. You got to change to a lower resolution in our display settings for that option to appear. Have to change my resolution manually first before launching games with lower resolution...
If you select a lower res, then change the option, then change back to normal res, then launch the low-res app/game... that might remember what setting it was at least time you used a lower resolution. I can't be sure (not having a Surface Pro, and in general I despise Intel graphics drivers as featureless and poorly designed) but based on what you said, it's worth trying.
new display drivers fix all issues.

Thank you!
My surface pro worked great, then one day, out of nowhere, my games stopped scaling. What used to cause the problem was directx11 not scaling and i could simply hit the F7 key which would bring up screen sharing and click on duplicate which would solve the issue. But at some point, and for seemingly no reason, my display scaling broke for both games that used both directx11 and lower versions. But doing what you said (after installing intel's drivers) fixed the problem.
So thank you again. Searching the web with google was very unhelpful up until i saw this post.
Glad to hear it. I don't usually say this, but please do remember to click "Thanks" on helpful posts; it improves their visibility.

How to change Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 Resolution from 1920x1200 to 1920x1080?

How to change Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 Resolution from 1920x1200 to 1920x1080?
Basically they have this feature built in if you connect the HDMI cable to the tablet... then the tablet reboot in 1920x1080 and displays only on the HDMI screen (the tablet screen is off)
When you disconnect the HDMI cable it drops a notification every 1-2 minutes do you want to reboot back to normal 1920x1200 resolution and it keep asking till you agree and reboot.
My question is how i can turn it to 1920x1080 or just how to disable the notification that pop up over the screen?
I prefer not to root the device if its possible.
Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 working on Android 6
Thanks.
Hi, came across your question wile looking for a solution as well. I do have a work around for the constant ask for revert from console mode. But not sure if it works on Android 6. I'm on 5.1 still. Hate 6. I do the Console mode remove HDMI thing. Then I go on a rampage force stoping EVERYTHING I find running. I go to Settings/App/Running and force stop everything. Then the Show cached processes, also stop everything. (and I mean Everything I see, including all those google thing I dont need running at the time, tho most will turn themselves on again) Then to the 'All' apps tab and look for everything Nvidia/Shield related and force stop it. And it works. The nagging stop. I haven't figured out what is it that stop the message as I did this once on a rage for that stupid message and since it worked I do it like that every time. And I've play for well over 2+ hours without the message popping up
Oh, also, I don't have a controller but I have All-In-One Toolbox, that I also run to close everything after all the force stops. Just in case. Well with that app you can have a toolbar on the notification and add a 'Recent app' there. Which you can not only use to switch but if you tap it and then tap somewhere NOT on other apps you get send to Home screen. (Wish the add Home/Back as well)
I know it seems like a hassle. I only do this when I want to record something on Ultra and get 1920x1080 instead of that horrid 1728x1080.
OH! And the touch accuracy gets worst the closer you get to the upper/lower borders (on landscape) due to touch screen reading the 1200 pixels on a 1080 shrunk image. Takes some getting used too, but worthy to capture on an OCD friendly video resolution.
I'm on Stock 5.1.1, not root.
Gonna look for a ROM that can do 1080p and also keep the Navbar. And maybe even add 1 tap Screenshot/record shortcuts for the navbar. Old cheap tablet used to have that screenshot button on the nav bar. Which was awesome for quick snap at those special gaming moments.
Anyways, since you have 6, try going Settings/Apps/All and force stop everything Nvidia/Shield related. And let me know how it works. Running apps 5.1.1 management is one of the things that keep me on in. And how micro SD works.
Hope it helps.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I tried to force stop but it still pop up the notification to restore to 1920x1200.
About the Android 6, I love it Because of the SD format that turns your SD to be a part of your device storage.
I have a controller so i can navigate even without the nav bars
If i will find something i will update here.

Thanks for this post, it was answer to what I wanted to do with my tablet - getting full screen for HDMI output without console mode, which frankly would be actually worse even if it did't puck up with my Dualshock 3 (console mode for some reason closes/disables the DualShock 3 connection with the sixaxis app from Play Store) - when using Mirror mode I can use my Dualshock 3 fine and using terminal before starting to play makes the screen look glorious, especially with games like sonic 2 android or Final Fantasy IX android.
