Does anyone also have microphone issues whilst using apps like WhatsApp, Snapchat and messenger for calling?

I'm running 4.4.4 and when using Google Messenger, I can't see any emojis from incoming texts. They just show up as ?????. I've tried installing the Emoji keyboard and enabling it but that didn't work. I actually like this app and I don't want to switch if I don't have to. Any help is appreciated!
For whatever reason whenever a group chat is going on in Hangouts the phone slows down to a crawl.. Anyone experiencing this? Seems to only happen in Hangouts, if I use another SMS\MMS app everything works fine.

I am having problems with Google Messages where I can't enable the chat features (it get's stuck at 'Excuse the wait...'). So I am curious if there are other messaging applications that support RCS. I tried a search but all I got are SMS/MMS apps.
