Magisk is the easiest way to root these days.
Unlock your bootloader
Run getvar all to find your Device model and software channel.
Code:
fastboot getvar all
Product = codename
securestate = bootloader locked or unlocked
carrier_sku = Model #
ro.carrier = Software Channel
ro.build.fingerprint = Software version See post #7
ro.build.version.full = Software version See post #7
Download the firmware for your model, software channel, and software version.
If you cannot find the exact software version (ro.build.fingerprint) you will need to flash the closest firmware first.
Unzip the firmware, find the boot.img
The rest should be the same as the thread you linked.

thank you so much for your response i appreciate the info. even though the bootloader is locked, this root method should work? AP verification seemed to stop me in the past. i already broke it and now am flashing the correct firmware to start from scratch.

[Q] Return HTC Desire S to factory

Hi there, firstly i apologise if this has already been asked, i am looking to put my phone back to factory state as i have to send it back to HTC under warranty as it is now broken my current state is as follows:
UNLOCKED
SAGA PVT SHIP S ON RL
HBOOT 2.00.0002
RADIO 3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC boot
my recover is 4ext Recovery ver 2.2.7 RC5
if somebody could provide me with a step by step guide or show me where to find one it would be hugely appreciated!
Goodbye you pretty virgin LOCKED bootloader :'(
Sorry mate, all you can do is go down to an old hboot to cover the unlocked or relocked state...
Oh and if you want the old HTC ROM, you must relock and run a RUU.
ok can you maybe give me a step by step guide to achieve this?
Make sure adb is enabled in the phones developer settings.
Then:
On PC with adb set up enter the following commands:
adb shell
reboot bootloader
then when phone reboots to bootloader, make sure it is in fastboot mode
enter on PC:
fastboot oem lock
Then your Phones Bootloader should show RELOCKED and you can run a RUU that fits your Phones CID/Region since you don't have super CID.
are you able to supply me with a link to find a list of ruu's

hi im sorry but im struggling to find the correct ruu for my phone is there anyway that you can steer me in the right direction - i downloaded the saga vodafone uk one but it hasnt worked
You need to find a RUU correct to your location and service provider, if branded.
If have used the correct RUU, based on the above, then you need to post the error that is showing up. You may need to create a gold card or lower your misc_version. Steps on how to do both can be found in this thread.
I USED THIS ONE RUU_Saga_Vodafone_UK_1.32.161.1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.15_M_release_179398_signed.exe
I get the bootloader screen, it says erasing data, sending, then updating signature, then i get error (140) bootloader version error, the rom update utility cannot update your android phone, please get the correct rom update utility and try again.
This issue i have is that there isnt a desire s option in the list of ruu's !

That isn't the issue. The codename for the Desire S is "Saga". As you can see, all of the RUUs listed are for the Desire S.
Your misc_version may be higher than the version of the RUU you're trying to run. Follow the steps under the heading "Modifying the version of your phone" in the thread I linked you to above and see if that works.

Hi been reading this thread, so is it correct that if you have unlocked your bootloader and rooted that you can no longer return to manufacturer?
After unlocking the bootloader you can re-lock it and return to stock, although your bootloader will contain the message "RELOCKED" which is evidence of having rooted your phone, and can't be removed. You could run a pre-2.3.5 RUU which doesn't show the lock status of your bootloader and hope that the manufacturer won't notice and won't write off your warranty.
This is why S-OFF is much better than unlocking your bootloader, since you can root and also return to stock without affecting the lock status of your bootloader.

[Q] How to Root Asia (HK) HTC One XL ?

Seems like the guides here are geared towards the AT&T (US), Rogers (Canada), and Telstra (Australia) models.
I'm completely new to this so I don't want to do something blindly and pretty much all the guides I see are saying they're specifically for models from those carriers.
I have unlocked the bootloader via HTC's own tool and tried the solution posted here (najmus99.blogspot.hk/2013/04/how-to-root-htc-one-xl-asia.html but it doesnt seem to work)
INFO
Stock ROM
HBOOT 2.17.0000
firmware version is 5.08.708.3 (latest stock OTA update available to me)
S-On
Apologies if this has come up in another thread before but I have searched and couldn't find it. I would really appreciate if anyone could suggest a solution or point me in the right direction.
I'm not opposed to flashing a custom rom if it gives me root access but this is still my daily driver until the Xiaomi Mi3 becomes available in Hong Kong so I'd rather not switch to something too buggy (atleast not yet)
Many thanks to everyone for your help in advance !!
If you have an unlocked bootloader already you just need to install TWRP recovery so you can flash SuperSU. Download TWRP 2.6 from here. Put the file in your fastboot folder. Connect phone in fastboot mode, open command prompt from within fastboot folder, issue the following commands:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "filename.img"
(the exact filename, minus the talking marks)
Code:
fastboot erase cache
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now you can enter TWRP and install SuperSU on your phone.
PS. Questions go in the q&a section, in future please post in the right section. I'll ask for this thread to be moved.

Well done on getting all that done, great work. In order to change your CID you will need to get s-off first, you will have to use the Rumrunner method which you'll find here:

Ah OK because at other HTC phones I had to change CID before S-OFF.

For the Facepalm method, yes you need SuperCID first. But for Rumrunner you don't need SuperCID first.

Actually there is only a ruu.exe for the US unlocked version af the a9 so that fits not wth your device.
But you need to get S-OFF first, then change cid and mid and convert to US unlocked and than your good to go.
Link to the thread for converting is here. https://forum.xda-developers.com/one-a9/development/s-off-convert-to-htc-usa-unlocked-1-12-t3271861
Take the latest mm 6.01 rom-zip to convert and then take the ota or use the ruu.exe

Technically yes, you could flash the system.img, but you would also need Nougat's boot.img. Nougat's boot image will not boot on any older firmware.
To upgrade to the firmware from a different MID/CID, you NEED s-off.
Bottom line...you need s-off to upgrade to the Nougat release from the US Unlocked variant. There is no other method.

Sure...the RUU is here. It will cost you $30 to get access to it.
If you want a system image, you can extract it from any RUU you wish. You'll need the RUU Extraction Tool, which is available in another thread here on XDA. The OTA is designed to only patch certain portions of an existing system partition. OTA zips do not contain a system image.
You can flash the Nougat images through recovery if you want, but THEY WILL NOT WORK. You will soft brick your phone! It will not work! The firmware (radio, bootloaders, etc.) are different! 1.xx firmware is not compatible with 2.xx boot images!
If you want HTC's Nougat on your phone, you have three options:
1. S-off your phone and follow the convert to US unlocked guide.
2. Wait until if/when Nougat OTA is available for your A9 variant.
3. Buy a phone that is already officially supported.
Please take the advice provided to you by @MGfusion, @alray, @scotty2000, me, and possibly others in multiple threads on this forum.
If you are unable to s-off, you will not be able to use the software contained in the Nougat RUU for US unlocked at this time. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY.
If you are unable to follow instructions, nobody on this site will be able to help you.
I would advise you to stop modifying your phone until you've done more READING on this forum. Without the proper RUU, s-off, or unmodified image files, you will not be able to return to stock.

How to rollback from Oreo to 7.1?

Hello, I just installed Oreo but don't like it and am looking to rollback to the most recent Nougat update on my U11. I have not flashed an Android device before. I have looked at these guides:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/u11/how-to/guide-htc-u11-how-to-return-to-stock-t3628452
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72831916&postcount=3
Though I don't quite understand them. I have download the 1.27.401.11 firmware for EMEA from the spreadsheet (since my device was bought unlocked and I put a Three SIM in it), and also the adb installer. How do I go about using these to install the older firmware?
I believe the first step is going s- off then flashing the appropriate nougot ruu if available. Just my 2 cents hopefully others will chime in. Hth

If you upgraded to Oreo via ota
I don't think you can go back to nougot without going s- off, at least not from what I read.

I am sorry because i am answer not clearly.
I was s-off for change supercid for update oreo.
I was s-off again and flash ruu for rollback from oreo to nougat.
You can do it without S-Off. I did it last week... BUT, you must do it with same CID/MID for it to work.
The guide is located here.

please be mindful that you will need to remove spaces for it to work... I think it should look like this from memory
Code:
adb shell "dd if=/dev/block/sde1 bs=1 skip=2208 count=16"
I also don't recommend it if you dont know what you are doing...

I have a question. Can this be done with super cid? Or must the cid and mid match the ruu?

No idea,,, My bootloader is unlocked.
I have installed ADB and verified it works with 'adb devices'. How do I go about loading the .zip Nougat file to modify it in the command prompt? Also I assume the 'TWRP Flash' button on the TWRP app restarts the device into Download mode? Lastly, once the commands to modify the RUU have been executed, how do I actually install it to the U11?
Supercid is no longer valid. Your cid must match one in the list of cids that the firmware is compatible with or it won't flash.
If you are dirty flashing you can expect bricks. You are best going the s-off route rather than forcing the firmware on. At this moment in time the U11 is a very expensive paperweight.

That's where the problem is. I can't access my fastboot mode. Using adb reboot bootloader or holding volume - while phone starts up, nothing seems to work.
I also learnt bootloader is only unlockable on ULM and European versions. I have a Korean model.
Will cross-flashing to the European version help?
