VPN Issues - LG Velvet Questions & Answers

I'm thinking this is more of an Android 10 issue. I cannot use ANY VPN when on Wifi. It's not my router. I've tried different routers. If I'm on Wifi, VPNs will connect, but I'll immediately lose all internet. If I turn the VPN off, I have to flip Wifi off and on again in order to get my connection back. This doesn't happen on 5G. I'm using AT&T.
I don't plan on rooting, and I cannot use an adblocker because most of them require creating a VPN connection. Any suggestions?

Ya this is an LG software issues... I read in the blokada thread someone who was getting help and the dev said it was our device fault. Then the person said they got a software update and it fixed their issue.
I guess we just have to wait for LG to send us a new security patch fixing the issue ?*

At first I thought it was my router. But, I tried at work too. I don't really use a VPN, but I want it because that's how non-root ad-blockers work. Oh well. Thanks.

Weird I'm running the July 1st one 10d ... I don't really know how LGs scheming works but ya VPN won't work for me.
And nah pretty much forget any hope of root on our model since our bootloader is locked. Also this phones not that popular that we'll have devs creating bounties to try and put the effort

It works on 5G. It won't on wifi.

So no solution to this yet? Very annoying. As said above, VPN works with mobile connection, breaks connection when on wifi. Reported to LG (and where is even their link or address for reporting it)?

Believe me. If there were a solution, it'd be posted here. I've fiddled with some settings. By the way. It's NOT DNS. I've tried loading raw ip addresses, and no go. What's odd is the vpns connect, which means that, somehow, THAT'S getting out. Weird.

Same stuff here on my LM-G900EM.
I've been using AdGuard for years without any glitch, but since last LG software update, no luck on wifi. Waiting for a new version from LG.

The latest October security patch that my phone just got fixed the VPN issue. So keep an eye out whenever you get the next security patch it should be fixed.
The horrible laggy scrolling in apps has been fixed as well.
LG launcher is still a POS though and still seems to redraw at times going back home... And the random lag going into the eecents screen still exists ?.
I miss the LG of the G2 and G3 days

I got an update on october 15, with september security patch. It changed nothing on my wifi/VPN behaviour...

If you want adblocking without battery drain, just go to SETTINGS/NETWORK AND INTERNET/PRIVATE DNS... and type in dns.adguard.com. It will block most ads without a VPN or any other app installed and it's free. It's a built in function of Android 10

@mrsubway @pomponazzo I got the same bug. There is a workaround to use VPN on wifi.
1. Connect to VPN on data connection.
2. Change to wifi.
3. Disable Data Connection.
4.Disable wifi.
5. Enable wifi and enjoy.

I can't believe that actually worked. Thanks for the workaround

I just got Android 11 update in Europe today. They finally fixed the VPN issue

So, this saga has finally ended. My firmware was G900UM10e. VPN bug, and phone would not take OTA. It kept saying I had the latest firmware. To their credit, AT&T support DID try everything. The phone wouldn't even take a push from their servers. New SIM card, factory reset, nada.
So, they sent a warranty replacement with G900UM10n loaded. VPN works perfect. I NEED it for work. And, today I managed to get G900UM10o over the air.
Either the IMEI of my old phone was MAJORLY hard bricked on their update server, or there was a bug in 10e blocking OTA.
Anyhoo, just wanted to share.

I also had such issues with my VPN. When I was connecting to a server, the Internet speed was slow. I changed different VPN until I decided to buy a licensed one. I bought the subscription on NordVPN because it is one of the best VPN, according to Reddit. The problem with slow Internet remained. I didn't know what to do. Then I understood that my internet connection at home is too and for using VPN. I had to change on fibro-optic cables to raise my Internet speed. When I changed the cables, all the problems were solved, and now it is working normally.

Att Fuse Problem

Hello Everyone,
I just received a ATT fuse and for the life of me I cannot seem to get the WIFI to work. I've had the tilt and the 8125 previously and I tried duplicating settings to no avail.
Are there known issues with the WIFI on this phone?
I can connect to my WEP enabled wireless router, but opera and IE fails to connect and just keeps giving me errors. This is what I have read and what I have tried:
Setting to "work" instead of "Internet"
I've tried the cab files posted in another thread to disable ATT proxy
I'm a little lost in what to check. I did follow everything I've read here that came up in "WIFI" search. I have not unlocked the phone nor flash a rom.
Could someone lend a hand?
Sign up for the att media program...its on the attwireless site
This is a bit drastic, but an easy potential fix is to flash another ROM (after flashing Hard-SPL of course). AT&T often adds a bunch of unnecessary crap to their ROMs, which may interfere with normal functions. You could always flash the AT&T ROM back if you'd like.
Hi Animexi80,
I already have a data plan. The problem isn't with Media net, it is with the phone's built in WIFI.
Trancecoder,
Really, that drastic of a step.. Do you know of a rom that fixed a WIFI problem?
Thanks

Honestly, I never even gave the AT&T ROM a chance, so I was unaware of Wi-Fi issues. Pretty much any ROM should work. If you flash a Fuze-specific ROM, you may want to run the CAB that disables the hidden AT&T proxy. If you flash a generic Touch Pro ROM, you'll likely need to run a CAB that fixes the keyboard layout.
Ok, I suppose I will give it a go.
If I may ask, would you tell me which rom and radio you're running. It would help rule things out it it doesn't correct the problem.
thanks

What is the "hidden AT&T proxy?"
I just got an AT&T Fuze and after enableing wifi using the wireless manager, had no trouble connecting to home wireless networks with various security configurations (WEP, WPA, hidden SSID, etc.). Of course if the access point has the MAC filter enabled, the Fuze MAC address must be added to the allowed list.

I'm running an older PROven ROM, version 1.03. I'll be upgrading soon, probably to NATF's ROM. My radio ROM is 1.08.25.20, but (1) the radio ROM doesn't control Wi-Fi, so it's moot, and (2) it has not had very good battery life, so I'll downgrade back to 1.02.25.28 tonight.

It's a proxy setting, separate from the normal one under Connections, that is hidden. It's used to make things such as Cingular, er, Cellular Video work.

This is a bit off-topic, but FYI, anything below WPA/WPA2 cannot be considered secure. WEP can be cracked in minutes, hidden SSIDs don't make APs invisible, and MAC filtering is useless (except with WPA/WPA2) as anyone sniffing traffic can see client MAC addresses in the clear.
I have found that sometimes when I have both a "data connection" and a "wi-fi" connection that they phone seems to not lock on the wi-fi but tries to use a weak data connection so try turning off the data connection and see if that fixes the problem. Also give a soft reset a try as well.
Surprised by how few ppl are having wi-fi issues. I've tried about 6 ROMs now and have the same problem with everyone (guessing this proves its more of a hardware vs software issue)
I can locate and connect to a wi-fi network but no data transfers. I have to continually disconnect/turn off/reconnect over and over and finally I will get a connection..but if unit goes into sleep for a few minutes...I have to repeat.
Very annoying...no one else is having wi-fi issues?
Hi Everyone,
Sorry I haven't reported back sooner. I wound up loading a different rom on the phone and away went the problem.
jank0023, I have no idea. I would flash the phone back to stock and return it for another if all else fails. In all my searching, here and elsewhere, there ahve been a handful of wifi problems I came across. It doesn't seem like that common of a problem afaik.

If its your router try another channel make sure its on a supported signal (a,b, g)... lastly ensure your router is excepting all devices. I know these are basic checklist items but sometimes these can get us. I had a laptop that would only work on channel 6 ;-).

Thanks guys for the suggestions...I don't think its related to my network setup as I have about 4 other devices able to obtain signals with no problems using DHCP.
Issues don't seem to be as severe on some of the most recent ROMs I've used but still not perfect.

[FROYO WIFI FIX] 2.2 Wifi stuck at "Obtaining IP Adress"

Awesome, thank you for this. I was having similar problems with mine after the Froyo flash too. I'll give it a shot.
I've been using Froyo since DG posted the link to JI6...and I've never had this issue. I use wifi on a daily basis. Weird.
Super weird...what would your android id have to do with wifi?
Oh and this belongs in general!

I didn't have any issues until Cog 2.5.5. Once I flashed it my wifi just quit on me. I tried going back to stock Froyo to see if that was the problem, but no luck. As soon as I changed my device ID to what I had on Eclair everything got fixed.
I was having the same problem. I found a workaround that doesn't require changing anything on your phone. I accessed my router settings, changed the security type from WEP to WPA2 and the phone obtained the IP address immediately. Hopefully this will help out those of you who aren't familiar or comfortable with flashing your device yet.

Thanks for the info. Decent work around. I would still like to resolve the issue, but for now this works.
I did all of the steps in the original post, but it did not correct the issue. Actually made my phone worse. Now I cannot get into download mode, and I'm on Cognition beta 8 and my GPS does not work. It was working on Froyo leak, but had these same wifi issues.
This workaround is not working on my fios router. It is working on my netgear router at work. I'm not that well-versed to explain either situation. I just don't like hitting my data plan when I was getting wifi before 2.2 flash. And even then, it was working for a few weeks.
I ve flashed my phone and everythjng works great till one day when I wasn't able to connect to my wi fi at home (using wep key). But at my office works like a charm with wpa key.
If you are still having issues with your wifi after using the two work arounds mentioned in this thread I would reccomend flashing back to stock JF6, doing a master clear and reflash your current ROM. I would not suggest restoring system data using TiBU after doing the master clear as this could carry over your wifi issues. Yes I know it sucks to have to redo all your settings, but if it gets your wifi working then I would say it's worth it. After you restore your apps and such reapply the first fix that I mentioned to change your device ID back.
I did all the steps you mentioned in the first post. But I dont see any Android_id entry in secure tab.
I am using sqlitebrowser to edit settings.db file.
I am getting wi-fi getting Ip address error after installing odin3 1 click froyo update for captivate.
any other alternatives?

Has anyone tried assigning a fixed ip address, this worked for me.
Some people have had success addressing this issue utilizing the app Wifi Static".
For me, it was due to some zombie ap that I did forget. Ever since, my froyo got back to normal. The ap is svuwired.

Don't see why you have to do all that. Just flash back to stock and wifi works again.
I'm using a stock Froyo (official release , rooted)
when connecting to a Linksys N150 router, Im stuck at 'obtaning IP Address'
it's the same whether there is no password, WEP, WPA
on a linksys WRT54GH I can connect without problems, but oftentimes even if the phone shows that I'm connected via Wifi, there is no data coming through. I will need to disconnect and reconnect to my router
on both setups, I am able to connect and surf using my ipod touch (4th gen, on ios 4.1)
this is especially frustrating for me because there are 3 Galaxy S users in the house (the other two are my sisters, who bought the phone because of me)

VPN doesn't work on android - IS THERE A FIX?

I've been trying to get my PPTP VPN to work over verizon 3g for the past few weeks, but it never works. It connects, and the data stops being received after a matter of seconds. It works absolutely fine over wifi, just not over 3g. I thought this was verizon's fault, but then I found a google group where I discovered that ALL Android owners trying to use PPTP over their carrier's mobile network are having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!
Is there any easy fix to this? I can't believe Google has let this go on for more than a year since people started complaining about it. This is a major flaw and a dealbreaker for enterprise users.
Any suggestions? See below for string about problem involving ALL ANDROID PHONES:
See the string below for more detail:

I'm not sure what pptp is, but I got my corporate email to work through the native email app. The emails are pushed, but I get fc when I try to read any messages. It worked for a few weeks before crapping out one day

I tried doing OpenVPN, but when I looked up the instructions, they were way beyond my computer programming abilities. Even the person who posted the "simple" instructions in this forum started referring to files I'd never heard of - config files, adb, etc. I REALLY need to get VPN to work on my phone, is there any chance you'd be willing to explain, in layman's terms, how to set it up on Android?
VPN do work on Android...
May be there might be some issues with the configuration, why don't you configure it once again. It will definitely help you out
Well i just have found some useful information for you, first of all that there are number of VPN Providers who are offering Free Android VPN and as well as the query mentioned above that you guys are having problem with your android phone..
so as i suggested above, try to configure again. May be that helps you out...

PPTP is broken and all security-aware enterprises have migrated to more secure solutions ages ago. I don't think it's a priority to get it working, but obviously it should work if it's included by default!

I went to the snapchat support page and went to report new problem under the "cant send snaps or stories" section but at first i couldn't log in to report the problem with snapchat because of course they blocked my ip so your gonna have to go to the link with your phone with your data off or with someone elses wifi. Your then going to want to report what your problem is to their developers and in less then like 5 hours it was working again. I hope this helped cause it worked for me.
Also i got rid of beta cause i think thats a bug in it that it blocks your ip cause of "suspicious" activity.:good:

Hello to anyone still maybe struggling with this. I personally had this problem and tried to entire messaging them about it - to no avail. That being said I believe I've figured it out. I always felt it was my wifi seeing as mcdonalds wifi worked just fine. Hence I finally went into my wifi settings (super convoluted with different extenders and dmzs and ports forwarded to pacify all house occupants) and on a hunch changed my dns settings at the modem level to googles from opendns-2 which was my primary. I left my secondary and tert alone (level 3-r1 and qwest-2 US respectively). Instant results. the only reason I had changed my dns to that in the first place was because a program had analyzed my connection to find what was supposedly the fastest. And while I feel it probably was, the primary was for some reason screwing with snapchat/ig and sometimes fb. anyways I hope this ends up helping someone somewhere out there.

So just to make sure you went in to your routers settings and changed the dns from what it was originally to google's DNS? Hi! I'm having the exact same problem with snap chat and sending my snaps to others over the wifi here at home-- I called Telstra and they suggested contacting Snapchat- hav done that twice so far- selecting my issues etc then entering my username, phone type, email address and number then messaged them the details of my problem.. no response thus far from snap chat.. it works fine when u switch over to to 3 or 4G but no good over wifi.. wtf.. its so annoying!! Have plenty of data to use on wifi but Snapchat app just won't co operate.. I don't know what to do.. I need to know the exact steps to take to try fix it.. is there a way? I see Simone here has managed to do it changing to google DNS but I kinda need step by step help to get it right.. Thankyou in advance to anyone who can help me- and others too it seems who are having the same problem..
hope to get some help with this.. it's sooo frustrating!!
Cheers!
Nik
I'm having the same issue. I use talktalk as my isp. They are terrible anyway regarding speeds but i noticed that i couldn't refresh/use snapchat whilst on my home WiFi. I've checked my dns settings and it looks like my dns servers are already with googles free ones 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4...
Anyone know how to fix this issue?!!

I've got this problem too, on chinese 9250
Go to Settings > More > VPN
Set up your VPN in there. I've set up VPN on my Galaxy S6 and S7 using L2TP IPSec with a signed certificate from GoDaddy.
I had it working on the S7 with a PSK also. Both phones are running Android v 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
It's strange but the VPN connection settings are different. My S6 is a Sprint phone, and I can't assign it a Certificate Authority. But the Verizon S7 won't let me save the VPN connection without a CA. I have to install the certificates in different ways for each phone as well. Very odd.
Anyway good luck.

Could you tell me how to do this please?
same problem for me Samsung s6 edge android 6..0.1 VPN apps work.... cyberghost / opera max/ and the rest .
PS after Zamber88 suggestion go to settings>> battery>app power saving > turn off for opera max or other vpn app.
PPS: if that is not enough do this: Settings >>Battery >> Battery Usage >> more (right up cornet button) >> Optimize battery usage >> select All apps and choose your VPN app and turn off .
also if in OPERA MAX when u use mobile data u get the error "enable background data " is because of the power saving.
CASE CLOSE !
That's a really strange issue. We did a lot of testing on MM with Nexus devices and everything works as intended. We even have a S6 Edge with MM that works fine (SM-G925F with one of the Unknown build listed on sammobile IIRC).
All I can come out with now is that you could try checking if there aren't any battery saving features interfering with the VPN apps.
Solved.
S6 edge.. disabled powersaving features. Vpns are working fine. Strange but cant figure out how powersaving is meddling with vpn. Solved.
Its not power saving . its restrict background data . just off the restrict background data and will work fine

I'm not sure if anyone can help me over here, but I'm not finding anything in the Nexus forums. Since @zamber88 did MM testing with Nexus, maybe you can help me with my Nexus 6. I have a 10 day trip to China coming up in a couple weeks and really need to get VPN working.
Google searches haven't helped, except to point me here. I have purchased VPN Unlimited and tried it with their app and an OpenVPN app. I got a free Galaxy J7 as a spare through the T-Mobile promotion a while back, and both apps work on it with no changes at all. Neither work on my Nexus 6, despite turning off power saving and restricting background data for both apps.
When I select a server, the J7 the Allow connection pops up, I OK it, and connect. On my Nexus 6, the refused to grant permission pops up. See the attached screenshots.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll try to cover all of the bases from easiest to most cumbersome. Given you have some time on your hands this should helpful. Read through the list before doing anything and once you start doing stuff note it down as you're going so that we'll be able to pinpoint any other problems that could pop up. If you succeed then you'll have an answer pretty much ready for posting .
Reboot. Sometimes freshly installed VPN apps fail exactly like the screenshots show.
Try setting up a VPN connection with another app. Shameless plug: Opera Max, Opera VPN (note: there's an issue in Max which makes some VPNs disconnect after a couple of minutes so make sure to kill it before running any other VPNs).
Scan the device with Avast, AVG and Avira to rule out any worms.
Rule out any other apps interfering by booting into safe mode and try connecting again (with your app and, Opera Max for a sanity check).
If you don't want to commit to steps that will follow (or the step before this one succeeded) remove apps from least to most needed retesting with your app and Max after each uninstall.
Upgrade to Android Nugat. It shouldn't break anything and could potentially fix this issue. Either ways it's always a good idea to upgrade when updates are available. It's not like you're on iOS .
Now it's a god time to make a backup (frankly, anytime is good for a backup). If you went over with uninstalling apps making one will be easier. If you have root on your device you probably have TWRP, make a backup with it and download it to your PC. You could also make a Titanium backup if you're not big on setting up basic apps but it's optional. If you don't have root just backup all sensitive data (photos, videos, settings if it's possible to export these in-app). Also note down all apps you can't live without. Google Play has a history of installed apps but going through it is a pain and the "Copy settings from another device" option when setting up a fresh device is helpful but will not restore in-app settings. Also I would advise to not use it given that the culprit can sill be lurking in your apps.
MAKE THAT BACKUP, there's no going back from here . Do a factory reset. After that as mentioned before don't restore settings and set up a "new" device. Set up your accounts and check if both VPN apps work (they should by this point). Now start installing your basic app setup and after configuring each one make sure that the VPN still works.
If somehow this didn't help make sure you're not running a ROM that's botched by flashing the official system image (and upgrade to Nugat as a bonus). If you know what I'm talking about then you will know how to do it, if you don't know AND the issue still reproduces the there's something really strange going on.
By now you should have your issue solved, hopefully in the first three steps at most. There's one other thing to take into account. The great firewall does not like VPNs and there's a fair chance that Unlimited VPN will not work so be prepped to have a backup plan. You could try with Opera VPN (no idea if it works, not my project, would be nice to get feedback) and also get a trial for any service that looks interesting to you on this list.
Hope this helps and that you'll have a safe trip .
UPDATED minutes after posting:
One simple step I missed: reboot. In most cases it solves exactly the issue you're having. No idea why it happens but probably there's a 2y bug opened and tagged as low prio in the Android project .
Thanks for the quick reply!
1. Besides VPN Unlimited, I've already tried OpenVPN for Android and OpenVPN Connect. They both use .ovpn files from VPN Unlimited. I just installed Opera VPN and whether I swipe through the intro screens or skip them, I can't click on "GOT IT"; nothing happens. I think this might be the crux of the problem as some of the buttons in the other VPN apps don't respond either. I'm "almost" positive it's not a screen overlay problem because I used to use f.lux that did that, got rid of it, and haven't had any problems since.
2. I run Lookout Security & Antivirus and just scanned again to be sure. Nothing found.
3. I tried safe mode earlier, only to learn that you can't install or run any aftermarket apps.
4-7. Nougat hasn't been released yet and I'm too dependent on systemless root and Xposed, I'm still stock rooted on MM 6.0.1 with the September security update. I do run TWRP and Titanium Backup and make sure their backups are up to date before I try anything dangerous.
8. Unless you can think of why I can't click on "GOT IT" in Opera VPN, I guess my next step is to sideload the latest OTA again and try all of the VPNs before installing TWRP, SU, and Xposed. That's about all that's left.

1. Some of the buttons don't respond? What about Opera Max? Opera VPN is fairly new in the game and it still can have issues (though I haven't found any during the brief time I was testing how it works with Max). This sounds really strange. Does it happen in other apps?
2. Rerunning the same Antivirus app will not double the likelyhood of finding a thread . Try with Avast too. You can safely uninstall it after that.
3. What aftermarket apps you have in mind? APK's installed not from the Play Store? It shouldn't impact testing if Unlimited VPN works fine. All background stuff shouldn't run by definition in safe mode.
4-7. Nougat is released. After beta 4 they started releasing OTAs and images for the final release on the beta channel and now it's going to go global. There are factory images for Nexus 9 which I upgraded recently and we have a Nexus 6 but after checking it looks like got the OTA from the beta channel, so it will take a while for the official release to roll out to 6 (though 6P and 5X already have it). Also you're right, there's no systemless root for it yet. We're rolling standard SuperSU on test devices in the office (no need for Android Pay or banking apps there).
8. I'll reach out to the VPN guys for info on gathering debug information for this. Meanwhile try with Opera Max or even Betternet. Do these also fail to connect? Also does it reproduce on mobile and on WiFi?
Got a response from the VPN guys. Most probably your network blocks VPNs. Try pinging http://api.surfeasy.com/ from mobile and WiFi. If it doesn't go through then your network provider is blocking it. Probably it will be the same case for other VPNs. The issue is known and they'll probably add an error message in the next release .

I installed Opera Max and it was the only app that gave me a helpful error message, so thank you and the coders for that! The message said something like it couldn't establish a VPN connection due to an Xposed module. I disabled Xposed, rebooted, and all of my VPN apps worked. Further searching found this thread saying that Xposed's Immersive Mode was the cuprit. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/help/vpn-to-t2850981
I re-enabled Xposed and disabled only Immersive Mode and VPN still works. Hopefully this will help others in this thread too.

I missed that you mentioned Xposed earlier. We implemented Xposed detection to prevent abuse so it's good to hear that it helped you to resolve your issue . Thanks forwarded to the developer behind it . Enjoy your trip!
