Fingerprint scanner, any good? - ASUS ZenFone 7 / 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello all 7 pro owner,
Just a quick question, how's the responsiveness and the usability of the side mounted fingerprint scanner?
Anyone compared it with Huawei mate 20 pro or P30?
How is it compared to in display ones?
Any feedback more than welcomed!
Thanks a lot!

It's very good. Very responsive and quick I'd say. Had under screen ones and to be honest really don't have any issue with this side one

Compared to S10 in-display fp, i can say it is much more faster and accurate

Thanks a lot guys, appreciate it!

Any Samsung Note user here?

I was just wondering if anyone of you guys used to have a Samsung phone from the S series or the Note one.
I am thinking of changing my Note 8 with this one, I just want a larger, NON-curved screen...
Any shortcomings I should know about besides the obvious ones ( lack of pen, wireless charging , IP68 waterproofing etc ) ?
Are you overall happy with it ?
Cheers~
I come from Note 8 ..and never come back..
Hello!!
I have a note 8 and I have extensively compared it to the NEX. Here are my observations.
According to me the best thing on the note 8 is it's display and it still holds true. Though the NEX has super amoled screen, it can't compete with the Note 8. Note simply has better and more saturated colours and screen is much sharper.
The second best thing on the note is it's camera, which again is better than the One on the NEX. NEXs front camera sort of fares with the note, but when it comes to rear camera, note 8 is definitely better. Note's camera has better colour accuracy, its sharper and more reliable compared to NEX.
Apart from these 2 things, I feel the NEX sort of does better in all other areas. Battery is way better on the NEX compared to the Note, I feel the OS is more custamisable and smoother than the Samsung's and fast charging is superb too.
I am super sensitive to colours and sharpness,so sometimes I miss the Note's display and also like I said, camera on the NEX is not as reliable as the Note's.
Over all I am really happy with the NEX and I think I am going to keep it. I still have my note 8 which I am planning to eventually sell in a week or 2. Let me know if you want to know anything specific apart from what I have shared

Hey,
Thank you for your answer, appreciated!
What version do you have, the chinese one or the indian(international) one ? From where did you buy it?
Do you find the quality difference between the two screens significant ? Can you live with it? Do you have the impression that the screen is much larger on the Nex?
How does the Nex under direct sunlight? Is it readable?
Is the incall sound good enough?
Did you experienced any bluetooth problems?
Is there a easy way to transfer all of your applications from the Note 8?
The FUN OS is usable or really horrible as the reviewers are saying ?
Thaaaank you !
Hello!!
I have the Indian version and I bought from amazon India.
The quality difference is definitely significant, but I am slowly getting used to the NEX display. Like I said, the colours and sharpness on the Note 8 is significantly better. But you can live with the NEX display.
Screen feels a little bigger on the NEX but that's not too significant. The hand feel is pretty good on the NEX. I like the heaft of the phone and the screen to body ratio is the best part on the NEX.
It is quite readable under direct sunlight, but again it's not as bright as the Note.
I have had no issues with the Bluetooth so far.
In call sound is pretty decent and quite usable. So no complaints there.
I don't know about transferring data from the Note as I did not do it. I just set it up as a fresh device and downloaded only the whatsapp back up from my Google account.
The fun touch OS is been good so far. I find it perfectly usable. The only thing I don't like about it is it's IOS lookalike icons and setting menu. I would have preferred more muted and simple icons. But the OS is pretty decent otherwise.
And I forgot to mention one more thing, the FP scanner is a hit or miss. Works most of the times, but sometimes there is a bit delay. I definitely like it more than the Note's FP scanner as it buddy never worked for me properly. I was using the retina scanner on Note which was again okay. So, I personally like the FP scanner on the NEX, thougg I would have preferred a faster face unlock.
Also, the call quality and network reception is much better on the NEX. Especially with the given earphones, the call quality is so much better on the NEX which I am super happy about.

One more thing, would you post a photo of the two phones, side by side so I can get an idea of their screen sizes ? I am not able to find it anywhere on the web...
PS: can you recommend an online electronics store with international shipping from India, amazon.in is not shipping to my country

But Samsung always keeps the best one for sam phoned
Here is the picture. And I doubt if you will find any online portal in India that can ship the phone out of India. You will have to ask someone coming from India to your country. BTW, which country are you from?

Martinique/France. Thank you !
One other thing to add a bout the NEX is you can remove the bottom three capacitive buttons and have the screen all to yourself.
I've just ordered it, can't wait to get it !
Thank you all for your help, appreciated !

Great!! Congrats on the awesome purchase So, how do you like it compared to the Note 8? And where did you buy it from? And I discovered something about the NEX display and I have shared it in a thread under guides and news. Do check that out as it will make your NEX's displays as good as the Note 8

Advice on P20 vs Pixel 2 cameras

Hello,
Most of the reviews are very focused on P20 Pro while P20 isn't that popular. In my country I can get the P20 a bit cheaper than a Pixel2 and probably prices will drop after P30 release.
Aafter looking at the P20 it has some advantages:
+ screen without Pulse With Modulation
+ fingerprint scanner on the front can help with unlocking the phone more easily when on my desk
+ battery seems pretty good
+ fingerprint scanner gestures so that the nav bar can be removed. Not sure how good it works in this way.
As for downsides:
- notch which I find annoying on phones can be reasonably disabled via software
- camera bump
- back glass easy to break and slippery
Huawei seems to be doing pretty good in the software updates department also. I do not game intensive games, I do not root or use custom roms.
Pixel 2 has the advantage of another almost 2 years of updates, metallic back, stereo speakers. But also disadvantages as old design, amoled with PWM, limited customization options in Software.
My main concern is how are the cameras of P20 vs Pixel 2? I will use the phone to take pictures and I want a good camera.
Any drawbacks of P20?
Thank you very much for your time.
Hello!
Take the P20. Here a few reasons.
Huawei promised to roll out 2 Major-Android-Updates. So Android Q will come to us.
The P20 has 2 Lenses (color/monochrom). So you can shot real monochrom pictures without any filters.
Sometimes the Master-AI is helpfull, sometimes not. But you can disable it with 2 taps.
There's some kind of instant on-screen-translator within the Camera-App and it works a lot better than googles on-screen-translator. It can also read QR-Codes and recognize different objects thanks to AI.
You can record SloMo-Vids with 960 fps, which is quite funny.
The Pro-Mode is incredible. You can control everything.
The P20 UI is highly customizeable. Thousands of Themes are available and you can create one on your own.
And here some of my Pictures.
I hope my opinion is helpful.
Thank you very much for your time and detailed answer. I was not really aware of the 960 fps recording but reading more about it (https://forum.xda-developers.com/huawei-p20-pro/help/truth-960-fps-slow-mo-t3789574) seems not that good.
Thank you again.

Advice on Pixel 2 or Huawei P20

Hello,
In my country I can get the Pixel2 and Huawei P20 at around the same price, P20 being a bit cheaper, depending on the deals.
Now I am aware that Pixel 2 is an older device but it has it's pros.
What I like and dislike about p20:
+ lcd screen without Pulse With Modulation
+ modern design
+ dual cameras
+ fingerprint scanner on the front, making easier to unlock when on my desk
+ fingerprint scanner gestures which allows disabling the nav bar
+ software with customization
- notch, but from what I've read it can be disabled easily
- no stereo
- back glass which can be broken and is slippery
- updates my come slow
What I like and dislike about Pixel2
+ another almost 2 years of updates
+ metal back
+ stereo speakers
- amoled with PWM
- design
Usually reviews tend to be for the P20 Pro, especially long term ones so the P20 is a bit shadowed by it. I do not root or use custom roms. I do like to read on the phone, that is why no PWM comes as an advantage. I also need it to take great pictures without too much config. So if anyone owned P20, can share the downsides compared with Pixel 2? How are the cameras in comparison ? Are there any downsides of Pixel 2 in terms of hardware issues?
Thank you for your time.
Pixel 2, no contest. P20 may be a better device on paper, but it can't stand a chance next to the Pixel 2. My colleague has one, and we've compared the cameras, the Pixel 2 beats P20 in every shot (except maybe zoom on some occasions).
Software wise, ugh. EMUI on the P20 is just garbage and feels like Android KitKat and iOS 7 had a baby. Just no.
So from me, get yourself a Pixel 2 and enjoy.
I love my Pixel 2. I only wish it got some better battery life. It's actually the best size for me. I don't mind the bezel because of the dual stereo speakers.
Thank you very much for your answers.
I use the Pixel 2, owned the p20 for a few months.
It is a tough call, but i would go for the pixel again no question about it. But it depends on what you value more.
The camera on the pixel us much more reliable always good shots . software experience much better. I use gestures on the Pixel ( Fluid NG app).
For me the P20 was better on battery and screen size.the fingerprint gestures are great as well. The speakers better on the pixel of course.
@icstrim1 you mention that the camera on pixel is more reliable, does this mean that on P20 you got bad pictures some times? Or does the P20 require more adjustments before taking a picture? Also the software isn't more customizable that the one on pixel?

On the auto mode with Huawei i got bad pictures sometimes, oversharpens a lot especially in rock walls or buildings. Also folliage backround detail looks more realistic on the Pixel.
I couldn't get rid of the oversharpening on the Huawei, there seem to be no real cure for auto mode.
If you take photos of children or landscape, the Pixel is a better choice in my view.
I prefer the clean Android, much smoother , almost addictive. But emui is not too bad.
Thank you o much @icstrim1, very helpful information.
One last question, the P20 has a screen without Pulse With Modulation, while the Pixel's amoled has around 245Hz PWM. Do you notice any eye strain/tiredness or other issues on the pixel's screen vs P20?
Thank you again for your time
You are welcome.
I actually like the oled more, no issues with eye strain.
Let me know if you have other questions.

Stylus for P30 Pro (notes and drawing)

One of the things I'll miss about my Galaxy Note 8 is the built-in stylus with Wacom pressure sensitivity. I know that the Mate series is more sensible for a question like this, but pretty much settled into the P30 Pro now. So...opinions on a decent, accurate stylus that works on the P30 Pro? I know that I'll lose the pressure sensitivity part, but something that's small and accurate will suffice for my needs. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I used to have a Samsung Note 5, but the Huawei P20 Pro & now the P30 Pro have made me give up the stylus.
That being said, a disc style capacitive stylus is touted by some as being quite accurate.
YMMV.

Which one to keep Xperia 1 or OP7 Pro? (similar price at purchase)

I got an Xperia 1 for £500 and a OP7 Pro 12Gb model for £550, I should receive both tomorrow and sell one of them later, just really unsure which one to sell, I know tomorrow I'll have a better perception, but at the moment, I can't make up my mind, why I should keep one over the other, they both have stock Android, Sony's has very fast security updates, almost on point with the Pixel phones, and that 4K screen should be amazing, now the OP7 Pro, has an amazing dev community, no features lost if bootloader is unlocked, like on Sony phones, all screen design (unsure how I feel about this though, not having where to hold can be annoying, had that issue with the Vivo Nex 2), 90Hz display (but my eye can't see the difference, had the Razor Phone 2, which has a 120Hz display and not that big of a difference in my eyes) and bigger battery (again, reviews say that at 90Hz it drains pretty fast). Did not mention cameras or fingerprint sensors, because both seem to be on par, in-display fingerprint are a bit meh, curious to see how good the OP7 Pro is though, because the ones I've tried, still make me miss the old school fingerprint readers on the back and the Sony side mounted fingerprint is also meh.
Considering the prices I got them for, which one would you guys keep and reasons, would really appreciate your opinions on this.
Have a great day everyone.

Regarding 4k - I came to my OP7Pro from my XZ Premium. Sony isn't bad, but it's not as good as OnePlus. I haven't used 4K even once. It was completely useless. Heck, I intentionally forced my OnePlus to stay on FHD. My battery life is beyond 6h SOT. All day battery. It's amazing. Warp charge works, it's real. It's amazing. I don't know what you're talking about with 90hz. I can see the difference. The moment I looked at a high refresh rate screen I saw the fluidity. I'd keep the OP7P, but both options are definitely great. You can't go wrong with either option.
The moment I saw a 90hz screen I decided that I will never again purchase a device with less than 90 Hz (even better with 120hz). So it would be a no brainer for me.

Thanks for the reply guys, it must be my eyes then, they had better days, I had correction surgery a couple of years ago, they must have messed up something xD
I understand that 4K is only seen in 4K photos/videos, so I agree that it is not a real plus. when I have both in front of me I'll share my experience.
The Pro is the way to go...if you like it! Cheers

I have had both for over a month, sell the Xperia 1, trust me
I had an Xperia 1 for 5 days before I returned it and got this, I can assure you this is a decision that you will not regret. I have been an Xperia fan boy for the last 6 years since the first Xperia z came out in 2012. Sony have also ruin to find by putting DRM keys on the devices and you will lose major functionality if you unlock the bootloader... With the oneplus all is good with unlocking the bootloader and you can be anything you wish on the phone. although it hurts my heart from the inside Xperia one has got nothing on the oneplus 7 pro the device did not just feel right and was hard to use for me. it appealed to me in the slightest and everything that oneplus 7 pro has overwhelms the Sony Xperia 1.
I don't find it aesthetically pleasing too,Not Sure about this one but they always lacked in Camera Department too
Guys Do Find 60 hz to be more choppy than other 60 hz display or ist it just me? The screen on my iPhone Xs Max seems more fluid & responsive than Op7 Pro when 60 hz is selected
Quick update, I received the OP7 Pro 4 hours ago, the Sony seems to be delayed with DHL, so probably just tomorrow now. OP7 Pro so far seems very nice, the case that comes with it unfortunately peels off the screen protector when it's on, I guess the screen protector that comes pre installed it is not centred, so, on the top right corner, the case is peeling the screen protector, I'm using it without a case now, it's the same size as my Note 9, so not a big issue, the Note 9 does have a better grip though, the OP7 curves more then the Note 9 and that makes it less grippy, if that makes sense. Also tested the app drawer on the Note 9 vs OP7 Pro and I can see the 90Hz now side by side, but I think I can still go back to a 60Hz display, it's not that of a big deal IMO.
I'll do some more testing tonight, maybe some night shots if I have time, between the Note 9 and the OP7 Pro let me know if you want to info in a Note 9 vs OP7 Pro.

So setting up the OP7 to 60Hz and comparing to the Note 9, both look the same, iPhones do have higher sensitivity, so it appears smother, but 60Hz on Android seems to be the same on the OP7 Pro and Note 9.

EBay, as typical Sony phones, they drop price very fast, have a look there and you'll see
Typing this on the Xperia 1 and it's so comfortable compared to the OP7 Pro, the slim design is awesome...
I would pick the oneplus 7 pro. But that's just my personal opinion. I have and s10+ and this 7 pro and my sim is in the oneplus 90% of the time, the 90hz screen really is amazing and it is very noticeable when going to a non 90hz phone

Dayium! And I thought Sammy phones depreciated quickly. Nice deal!
I would pick the Xperia and sell me the OnePlus
Nah the OnePlus is the way to go..
Need t get one myself.
I won't go to anything less than 90hz after using the OP7 pro. Simple as that.
Took a photo of my living room with artificial lighting, the colours are more natural on the Sony and quality is about the same on both, keep in mind this is with the stock camera, didn't have time to install GCam, but it's running the latest OOS.
