Will my current note 9 sim with tmobile work on the unlock note 20 ultra? - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

Hi everyone long time subscriber of xda I pre order an unlock note 20 ultra but I'm not sure if I can use the sim on my note 9 or if I new one since this will be a 5g phone thanks in advance.

It should absolutely work, yes. The SIM doesn't need to be changed to access 5G.

Yes it work. They use the same SIM. I had a OnePlus 7T Pro, which is also a 5G device, and I regularly swapped between it and my Note 10+ without any issues.

Thanks for info...
I am trying my TMO S9+ sim in my 20 uktra tomorrow.

When I was researching for myself, several articles Mention 5g security will not work on sim cards that aren't 5g. It'll probably work until you enter an area with 5g, and then fail.

So far no issues put my note 9 sim picked up 5G immediately

Unlocked not recognized by Verizon

I got the unlocked version straight from Samsung. Took the SIM out of my S10+ and popped it into the new phone, after which it restarted and activated.. Everything seems to be working fine but when I go into My Devices on Verizon, it shows no info about the phone, whereas before it recognized my phone as Samsung S10+. I think this is also preventing FindMyMobile from working.
Anyone with any ideas how to fix?

I haven't tried the Find My mobile part yet, but I see what you mean. I just have a blank where my device should be, but it does show my correct IMEI number.

Well yeah, I imagine if IMEI info was wrong the phone wouldn't even work.
I think this is my 4th or 5th unlocked Sammy in a row and I've simply transferred the SIM every time. It's always shown model number and my S10+ worked with FindMyMobile with no issues. No luck so far with the Note 20 Ultra.

Interesting. My unlocked S10+, using my old SIM card, just showed in the Verizon app or website with my phone number no specific identifier as to what the phone was. Same thing with the Note20 Ultra using that same SIM. However when I called tech support at Verizon to ask what the story was about 5G on the unlocked 5G phones she knew I had a Note 20 Ultra before I mentioned it. So I guess they know it through the IMEI. The only issue I've had is that Verizon call filter will not install on the unlocked Samsung phones. At least that was what I was told when I couldn't install it. My son has the Verizon version S10+ and call filter installed fine on that.

Yep, that's correct. Same thing happens with iPhones. If the phone wasn't sold as a Verizon device (that is, sold by Verizon or from Samsung with Verizon fw), it will show up with a generic, gray icon. The IMEIs of Verizon branded phones are automatically in their whitelist database which enables the icon.
Thats weird, my unlocked note 10 plus has worked fine since day 1 and my unlocked z fold 2. Tried an unlocked note 20 ultra for a few days with no issues awhile back. Another note 20 ultra on the way so we will know soon.

Ordered an unlocked 8T and am a T-Mobile customer.

I pre-ordered the unlocked 8t before I knew T-Mobile was releasing their own version. I'd like to know if there are any 5G performance features that the T-Mobile version has that the unlocked version doesn't. I searched around and one place said the only difference is software-related. Would I be better off returning the unlocked 8t and buying the T-Mobile version?
Just depends on what your needs are. The unlocked version will get 5G service just fine. T-mobile version claims to optimize the network, however I'm not 100%sure about that. If you're wanting easy bootloader unlock and flash custom roms the unlocked might be the better way to go, otherwise the t-mobile version is fine as this is the variant I have.
I'm sure my rambling didn't help you much.

Only difference between the TMobile variant and unlocked is the IP68 certification.

Tmobile version bootloader can be unlocked after sim unlock (which can be achieved by contacting Tmobile support on Twitter, did it for 7Pro and 6T)

That's not what I said. Yes I know that it can be unlocked. The unlocked version comes unlockable
And not everyone has an easy time at obtaining an unlock code from T-mobile either. ..

Those three things apply to the T-Moblie variant? And which one has the ip68 rating?

Yes those 3 things applies to the T-mobile variant. Official IP68 is the T-mobile one as well

@bbowman I have T-Mobile too and I've Supported OPO, OP3, OP3T, OP5, OP6T Global and now OP8T Global. I've always bought the Global Ed and have had no issues using them on the T-Mobile network. The only differences I saw between the T-Mobile version of the 6T and the Global was the T-Mobile ver got Network "Improvement" updates to "better" tune the software to work with T-Mobile Towers and it only had 1 SIM slot. With the 6T once it was unlocked it could be flashed with a Global Firmware.
Should be fine
Currently on the unlocked OnePlus 8 Pro on T-Mobile. I get all the 5G, including the standalone (after getting an R15 SIM card from the nearest T-Mobile store). You shouldn't have any issues with the unlocked 8T (mine will get delivered today) in terms of 5G, and you get the flexibility of dual-SIM. Win-win.

Mine arrived yesterday and I was surprised to see that I had 5G coverage (central Orange County, CA)! My SIM card is many years old, will I somehow get better 5G service if I swap in a newer card?
Yeah, I was getting 5G just fine. The newer SIM lets you access the standalone 5g network (when available), which I believe should give you even better downloads/uploads and lower latency. It doesn't share the frequency band with 4G, is the thing. As I understand it, anyway.
In my practical experience, I popped in the new SIM and got 400MBps standing outside the T-Mobile store. I hadn't seen that previously.
I'm sure it's fine without, but if you're near a store, it can only improve what sounds like is already a good experience for you.

Thanks I didn't know that about the new sim version. I got international on t mobile. My 7t is international and I been with tmo for 14 years. I noticed with 7t and now 8t, visual voicemail NEVER works unless I have the tmo version. My 6t was tmo version, won't make that mistake again, but nonetheless, I was curious, does yours work? And my rcs is on and off bi weekly, always connecting, or trying.

Do you have to meet the Tmo unlock requirements or can twitter support bypass the restrictions?

It been said most people are able to get it bypassed via Tforce (twitter T-Mobile support) as long as ypur nice to them. Thats what im gonna do when i get mine tommorow and have the imei. It looks like the only requirement in order to request the bootloader unlock code is having it sim unlocked (with up to 2 day waiting for the unlock file for bootloader).

I did the same thing with the TMo 6T. In-app visual voicemail was the only advantage. I just use the T-Mobile visual voicemail app since then, and it's mostly fine. As for RCS, mine has been connected solid side I set the phone up. Maybe try clearing cache/storage on Messages/Google Play Services?

Yes I have just accepted no visual voicemail, oneplus customer service sucks and can't understand what I'm telling them. Confused at whether I'm saying I have a tmo variant or not. I have not had one, for 6t or 7t.
Rcs I have got working. Had to opt out on the online form, then turn it off for a while and disable carrier services.

5G compatibility ?

Anyone have luck getting actual 5G with AT&T? (None of their 5G E bull****)
I have the unlocked version (bought directly from OnePlus) running on AT&T and I called them to see what could be done. Not much! To try and figure out if this is an AT&T issue, or a OnePlus issue...well your guess is as good as mine! VoLTE is selectable and working. I am able to make a phone call and still have access to the internet. I am not sure who to point a finger at to get 5G working, but I might say it's up to OnePlus. My reasoning is this: I had the unlocked Galaxy S20 FE for a few weeks running with the same sim on AT&T and it appeared as if 5G was working. So it appears as if AT&T is not stopping unlocked phones from accessing their 5G network??? So if my theory is correct then it's up to OnePlus to make the 8T work on the AT&T 5G network. Of course I could be completely wrong here and I hope someone somewhere can figure all this crap out for us all! Just like everything else today...it's all a smelly-hot-pile!
Dumb question, but did you have a 5g SIM?
I stopped by an AT&T store tonight and picked up a new SIM card. Bastages charged me $5 for it. Haven't used the 8T yet though.
According to AT&T the sim I have is the latest one available. As I mentioned when I had the S20 FE for a few weeks the 5G icon was active 90% of the time on the notification bar. Once in a while it would drop to 4G LTE. So now I am using the exact same sim on the 8T and their is NO 5G anywhere to be found! So, I don't think AT&T is preventing unlocked phones from accessing their 5G network....but rather I believe OnePlus needs to "do something" to make it work!

Dual SIM support

I'm looking for a dual SIM note 20 ultra, only want an unlocked variant. I've read about e-sim and T-Mobile but I'm ok with dual SIMs but wanted to ask specifically which models for US have DS? I want to order directly from Samsung but have read where some people say they have dual SIM, others do not. Thanks.
T-Mobile released it a few months ago & the at&t update enabled it today

Thanks, I'm more interested in straight from Samsung with an unlocked device. I don't like carrier phones. I'm guessing no e-sim or dual SIM direct from Samsung as it looks like it's an added feature by carriers.
Going to ask again, do all unlocked Note 20 Ultras have dual SIM? Samsung says they do but I could swear I've read here and elsewhere they do not. Went to pull the trigger and just today says they no longer offer the 20 Ultra but can still get it refurbished.

If the device was used/activated with TMobile, is fully paid and you have a receipt or invoice twitter/facebook tmobile support will unlock with no other questions asked. I have unlocked 5 devices in the last few years. Unlocked S22 and S22 Ultra last month by chatting on facebook messenger.
Not totally relaed: If the phone is unlocked, do any US carriers support eSIM + Std SIM config to help me use one phone for two lines?

Yes, only if it is unlocked model. For carrier models after you have unlocked the phone, esim is a pain with other carriers. Verizon system doesn't provisione sim correctly for a tmobile branded S22 Ultra. The Verizon reps have to add the device to their system for their system to provision esim. I tried with many reps for close to a month and gave up.
I had similar issue with Note 20 Ultra and Verizon were able to provision after I escalated many times in January this year but no luck with S22 Ultra. It may be a Samsung thing where they are not sharing the device details of all models with all carriers to add to their systems for esim activation.
