GAPPS - Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra Questions & Answers

If I were to get my hands on one, would I be able to put GAPPS on it?
Serious question... Can't live with a phone without GAPPS.
Any serious thoughts about this?

IMO xiaomi.eu will probably have a ROM for this phone and it will include everything you need.

Thank you for responding. Nothing listed there yet (although, my account registration was considered spam, so I cannot see more than then the basics and cannot interact yet on that site). Is it generally the case that a new Xiaomi phone gets an EU rom even if it is not sold to their market? It is so tempting, to go the xiaomi route, I wish the oneplus 8Tpro was out right now, as I am in the market for a phone in the next two weeks ... not in October. Not sure if I could stomach having an outdated phone after a month or so... Generally, it is nice to have new tech be top shelf for at least a few months, right?
Hmmm - Food for thought.

Just get whatever you like.
Phones won't stop coming out. Till the end of the year there will be new Huawei, new Pixel, new OnePlus, probably new Oppo.... and then the circle starts all over again.

This is how I have done it on Mi 9 Transparent Edition. Don't see why it wont be the same.

Yes, it seems that gaps is easily placed on the device. Source:
Thank you for the response.
And while it would be great to have the best camera... I probably need to buy the oneplus 8 pro. I've gone a long time without active Google assistant, closed bootloader, and (as a non Mandarin user) the annoyance of Chinese menus/ecosystem within an 'English' setting. Also, been without an active community of English using Android users for some time with this Huawei I'm using.
Want to grab a phone next week... And Xiaomi looks like it is using that impossibly annoying hungry marketing technique where the sell a very limited number of phones at a certain time each day. I got 'lucky' buying my Samsung 8 with that type of annoying system on the first day or two, but..... So annoying when you're a bit slow at Chinese and you're actually competing to buy a product. So... Actually... Competing to spend money seems odd too.
Ok. One plus is well over a thousand RMB cheaper where I am too. Lastly, Think I'll enjoy the software experience more and hopefully won't notice the camera too much. Hoping that the October release of 8t Pro will not be too much of a massive upgrade and have me annoyed either
To those who grab the Xiaomi ten Ultra. Enjoy and hope to read some reviews soon.

Just to give you a heads up -> Xiaomi has a very large and active English community. All phones are easily unlocked and the community have been doing a great job to provide debloated English roms no matter if you buy a Chinese or global variant.
OP 8 Pro is a great device too.

Thank you for your reply. I have always enjoyed tinkering with Xiaomi products and ROMS. I have also often assisted non-tech interested colleagues to put GAPPs on or re-Rom to global over the years I have lived in China. Although it did get a little challenging for a period of a year not too long ago. I actually really love what they do ... and funnily I can see about half a dozen Xiaomi smart devices in the room I am typing from at home right now. Man, I love their door lock!!!! Ha.
I was really going to wait until 21 August 10 am and try to pick one up, then if not, get the Oneplus... but decided against it. A few reasons. I just realised that even if I picked up the way more expensive Samsung Ultra, I am missing out on some Google aspects that I crave and have craved for many years (see my phone history in sig). Even the Global ROMs (no guarantee one will appear for this China-only variant) have trouble using Hey Google natively in my experience - (could be wrong on that one)
Even so, have gone with the Oneplus pro purchase just now and that phone will arrive tomorrow. Would have arrived tonight if I had ordered 10 minutes earlier. lol - nothing like Chinese delivery systems I suppose. Or at least compared to Aus.
Another couple of things did sway me. Xiaomi phones are great but they honestly do sometimes go overboard with their claims. I can't be sure about this device's battery life longevity. Especially considering their claims of 23 minutes for full charge look to be false ( I know still the quickest). I remember their camera claim for 108 Megapixel etc fell short of being a top-line camera despite the hype. Often seem to use an angle that disguises a hidden flaw. Anyway, This understanding, combined with my full google assistant want, means I will miss out on it. Maybe when my wife updates her phone and they are more readily available (seriously, trying to compete with a billion people to purchase an online product when you're hampered by language constraints suck), I can switch her to this 10 Ultra (she takes waaaay better photos than me anyway).
Until then, Look forward to reading more about people's 10 Ultra as time goes by. Seems this is my last post in this forum thread ofor the Ultra for now.
Cheers!

Graphene battery is surely the future.

You can install the Play Store from the built in Mi App Store, then install all the Google apps you want from there.

Worth it. Best phone
I came from note 20 ultra and let me tell you this is much more comfortable in hands. Playstore is just one download away from having everything. I'm alsomuch happier using this phone tbh and manage to get back 500usd.

I got the Ultra yesterday, i can see that most Google stuffs work and i can set them up, no issues with location.
BUT here's what's not working:
1. Google Backup and Restore, stuck at waiting for backup.
2. Google Location History, i saw the option yesterday in settings, but it was greyed out, somehow after a reboot, the option disappear. Can't turn it on no matter where i try it from.
I am having am SOT of 5h 10m with about 20% power left.

Anyone else got the Mi 10 Ultra, got Google Location History working?
Mine the option is missing in Settings, and it's disabled or permanently off in Google account / maps.

Just want to be sure it's not my ROM issue, lazy to reset and wipe cache to try again.

I've seen it talked about before on chinese roms and even Xiaomi devices,. I don't use it myself so unsure of a fix sorry but I did check my phone and it's exactly the same as yours looks

Sorry to hijack this thread. I just bought the mi 10 ultra. I installed playstore and all Google apps. But I realized that playstore is asking me to pay for apps I had previously purchased, even though I used the same account to log in. Anybody encountered this or know the solution?

Honestly start the unlock process and think about moving to xiaomi.eu
I didn't have that problem but a few Google things didn't work on stock. That's a really common issue though, I'd recommend googling it and trying what comes up, it's an extremely common issue with Google play services

Yes of course it'll work on EU ROM, my problem is with the stock rom.
I do not want to risk SafetyNet and Widevine L1 by unlocking..

Why would you unlock the phone then if you are staying on the stock Chinese ROM? If you're not going to flash, then don't unlock.

Widevine is level L1 on the .EU rom - so you're fine there. As for SafetyNet: all banking apps, government authorization apps and such work just fine on the unlocked - but NOT rooted - .EU rom.
So I don't see the problem.

HTC Sensation 4G T-Mobile

Here are some pics of the new T-Mobile device
http://www.tmonews.com/2011/05/t-mobile-branded-htc-sensation-4g-in-the-wild/
Thats a damn shame Tmobile has to put that ugly damn logo right on the front of the damn phone, put it on the back or something. But enough complaining, this phone is gonna be absolutely stellar and the new and improved htc sense is absolutely terrific, this phone is an instant win
great find!
the box is a little different than the vodafone version, but aside from the logo pretty much the same.
sigh... I knew it was a long shot but was secretly hoping that t-mo would somehow get a bicolor version back
I can't wait! June 8th is taking forever
Anybody know if mobilecityonline is trustworthy? They have the T-Mobile unlocked Sensation 4G for $600. 100 more than I think T-Mobile will have it for but it'd be unlocked...

why order it from a 3rd party online when you can order it directly from tmo on june 8? unlocking it won't be a problem I'm sure
The option for international shipping I think is a big reason.

Aside from the international shipping that Elchemist mentions (I have friends in the US who might be able to bring it to me) I don't know if unlocking is that easy.
Unlockers and repair shops here in Mex tend to be befuddled by foreign phones (one more reason I wish I were back in Canada) and T-Mobile, according to their page, only gives unlock codes to account holders in good standing (45 days postpaid, 60 pre-pay). This leaves the option of online unlocking services which sometimes take a while to appear for new handsets (I don't feel like having a phone for a month which I can't use for calls).
solsearch, an easier way would be to use one of the online unlocking sites and just input the code yourself. Now if only S-Off was available...

yeah I'm curious why tmo went with different packaging as well. it's the same as their version of the hd2
Does anyone know what types of goodies the sensation is coming with? (the contents in the box)
what was shown in the link was headphones, charger, USB to microUSB cable and battery.
EDIT:
on closer inspection, the open back shot shows a microSD card of unknown size. The vodafone versione comes with an 8GB card pre-installed in the phone.

Well, first I'm going to see if my uncle is still with T-Mobile as that'd be the easiest/surest way.
As for the packaging I don't really get why people care, vendors, reviewers, etc. sure as it affects appeal, but for those who already decided to buy it? Does it really matter? Worst case scenario you keep the box at the back of some closet or you toss it, it doesn't affect the device (branding on the device is another matter). Too bad branding is on the screen, if it weren't people who really cared could just buy a different back cover.
And it seems it won't come with a microSD card according to that screen shot (the one of the box). Remember that just because the pics show one in the phone it doesn't mean it'll be included, after all whoever is using it probably would want one in there... I'm slightly disappointed but I don't care too much as I'll be buying a 32GB one anyways. I could have used the 8GB one for less used content but 8GB cards are cheap anyways.
But I think I am definitely getting the T-Mobile US version as it kind of seems like kismet. My birthday's on the 9th and if I'm really lucky I can have this prezzie for myself on that day
I hope mobiTv, telenav and some other useless apps will not be preloaded. Also hope it will have tethering option right out of the box like G2x and G2. The greatest feature of tmous, wifi caling should be there but just worried about the battery when it comes to wifi calling. It seems to kill battery very quick on my Vibrant and it was also battery hog on G2x. Still very excited for june 8th though!
Edit: just saw mobiTV on the box, dang it!... T-mobile we dont want your bloatcrap on the phone!

Opo+Google Wallet+McDonald's=Failure. Help?

I apologize if someone else has already discussed this on here, I Googled to no avail, only finding this thread on opo forums: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/anyone-use-tap-and-pay-with-opo-at-mcdonalds.69436/
This is my first phone with Google Wallet tap pay capability, my wife's s4 has it but we never tried it until recently.
The problem is, when we go to McDonald's, my wife's s4 will tap and pay just fine, but my opo will not. It says it detects the reader, prompts me for my pin, but then says "check with cashier, it may have failed". And it fails.
Why?
I did find another thread, discussing the intricacies of NFC, saying that the opo may be using a newer chip than most other phones, but the guy in the opo forums said he used his at Walgreens just fine. I haven't had a chance to test that myself, though I will soon.
Any ideas? Or personal experiences?
Sent via quantum entanglement, focused through my OnePlus One.
I have been using the GW app on my OP since I purchased in early July. I have used it at CVS, Sports Authority and Macy's without problems. I also have been using my GW app for a few years and you may not have everything you need set up or configured correctly in you Google account. Access the account on a PC and go through all the settings options, maybe the issue is there.
I was the one that started the original thread on the OPO forum that was linked above. I flashed the CM11 nightly and can report that tap-and-pay is now working at McDonalds, so I'm guessing the issue is just a bug in CM11S and should be fixed in a future update. It wasn't just McDonalds that I had problems, though it did consistently fail there. For now, I'm going to continue running the CM11 nightly and continue testing at some of the other places I had problems.

And you don't need to update every other day if you don't want to. You can use a nightly for months most likely without a problem.

My opo won't recognize my 1k mifare classics, my wife's s4 will, but only enough to tell me they aren't supported. Idk what going on, but I think there has been a shift in compatibility for some reason, maybe yours aren't compatible?
Just a thought.
Sent via quantum entanglement, focused through my OnePlus One.
The mifare 1/2/4/8k chips aren't technically NFC forum compliant, which is why they don't work with most NFC enabled phones.
While some may be able to get a reading using the NXP tag reader app, you won't be able to write to them.

These are not mifare NFC tags I made sure not to buy those. These are Topaz 512 units?

That's good to know. Is there a central source for this kind of information? I trust you, I just want to learn more.
It's sad that they are not compliant, my old note i717 used them fine, now I've got 20 or so junk tags, I guess that's the price you pay for jumping on leading edge before standards are set.

Sadly there isn't a site that gives a full breakdown on compatibility with each type of NFC tag. Your best bet is to look at a few things and decide on a tag that works from there.
If you're just looking to use something like Tasker or another app to trigger some type of command (turn wi-fi on/off, etc) then something like the NTAG 203 is a good choice. These provide a pretty limited storage space, but are incredibly cheap for the most part.
If you want to store a lot more information, such as a vCard, you may want to look into something like an NXP 216. These have a bit more readable space (888 bytes over the 144(I believe) of the NTAG 203) so you can store information like name/address/phone/email/etc. These work well for everything except photos. Due to the slow read speed of NFC, trying to store even the most basic photo would provide a terrible user experience.
As far as how I know all of this, I worked for a startup here in Seattle that focused on NFC technology. Most of the people who were creating tags to be read with mobile devices used the NTAG 203 chips since you could easily put a shortened URL on them and they were incredibly cheap when bought in bulk. While the Mifare chips work great, and are often times used in things like bus passes, they aren't as friendly to mobile devices. We sold a ton of those, but they were never really for the hobbyist.

My biggest problem, (forgive me for not using Google, there is so much speculation out there right now because not everyone has the phone but everyone wants to comment on it) is getting back to stock from the nightly. I'm assuming if I flash a nightly, then when the official update comes out I will need to flash stock?
And how about nightlies, are there updates every night or if I want to flash a new nightly then I need to wipe and reflash the latest version?
And are there issues with using titanium backup or is everything mostly smooth because the changes between versions aren't huge?
Idk. I guess I just want a stable phone for a while but I keep running into bugs on stock. But I don't want MORE bugs on nightly. I love my opo, but Google navigation voice starts quiet and then ramps up to loud every time it talks to me. Pandora won't play through the headphone jack unless I restart the phone with them plugged in. Plus a number of other little things I can't think of currently.

So I got the 30O update, and now McDonald's tap pay isn't working even a little bit. With my phone screen on and waiting, no matter what I do it won't even register that I attempted to make a payment. It's like the phone and the terminal aren't communicating at all.
I've called Google and squared away my account, everything is fine and set up properly on their end and my end.
I only tried it a half dozen times before switching to my card, I didn't want to hold up the line.
Anybody else have problems with the update and tap pay?

Well you have to keep in mind that the stock ROM on the OPO is a "custom" ROM. Its pretty much CM 11S with some special apps such as the 11S lock screen AudioFX. It seems like you're at a dead end when it comes to Google Wallet payments. Why not just flash a custom ROM and see if the problem still occurs?
Titanium Backup works perfectly fine, no problems what so ever. Is your "headphone" a headset? (a microphone included).
And this seems silly but when you go into settings -> Tap and pay ........ you do see google wallet there and it is selected with the circle, correct?

While this is true, I know it's still a custom rom, but it should be different than just flashing cm11 on any old phone. This is cm11s, the software is tuned specifically to run on this hardware, and this is what I paid for.
I'm not mad, and I'm not making a big issue, I understand that all devices have bugs, even Samsung and Apple etc etc have bugs.
But it's not wrong for me to expect a certain valuable, common, feature, to function as intended. I'm willing to do a little workaround here or there until it is fixed in the next update, but it should've been fixed in this update, no? Didn't someone say it wasn't working on 25, but was working on the nightlies, so why isn't it working in 30?
Or is it working on 30 for others and just not me?
These are the questions I'm hoping someone can help me answer.
Today I actually got the phone to recognize the reader, but only once, and it was the same problem as before, "transaction may have failed, ask cashier".
And yes I have tap and pay enabled in the settings, but thank you for the suggestion, maybe I am just missing something simple? Nfc is on and working with connections to other phones, my account is verified I can send money to people manually, and it says tap and pay ready in Google wallet.
Anyone any ideas?
Edit: speaking of stupid reasons I could have missed, I am rooted, does that cause a problem? Google security issue making it not work? Anybody out there using tap and pay while rooted?

I had the same problem with my Nexus 5. I cleared all the days in the app, uninstalled, reinstalled and set back up. It's worked fine ever since.

[Discussion] Why I would never again buy Huawei Phone! And why you shouldn't too!

FIRST: This is my own opinion. You may disagree with it!
My Reasons:
I have Huawei P9. Looking at their Update policy I am not happy with it. P8 is not going to get a Nougat update which is SHAME! Not even 2 years of OS support... What a joke. This means My P9 most likely will not updated to a newer version after Nougat... Which means I will never again pay so much money for something that won't get at least 2 new OS updates (whole version).
Next: Nougat update. It's a complete JOKE. What's new? Split screen, App drawer (lol what innovation here!), couple redesign small things... Take a look at Samsung. They are actually adding new stuff... New apps that are useful: Password manager which makes a bigger use of the fingerprint scanner. Note app. New other stuff. And to be honest their Skin looks so much better. Colors are better. Did you see the ugly Black and Dark Blue colors on the Quick toggles on Huawei Nougat? Damn the guy who came with this idea should be fired as soon as possible! No Double tap to wake up, no raise to wake up... But hey they have Knuckle gestures.. Never used them? What a sick person will knock on his phone.. So dumb... Everytime I want to check my screen I have to look for the fingerprint or power button, chick with case makes a little harder to press everytime the power button, in the dark it's super annoying when you mistake it with Volume down... It's just annoying. Give me something easier. Wave to wake up, raise, double tap... Give me all of them and let me choose...
Next: Icons with app drawer are ridiculously BIG! I guess Huawei designers know nothing about aesthetics or don't care...
Next: Notes app doesn't sync with Gmail. I had iPhone and Samsung phones in the past. I really like Stock apps for notes, they are Free, no ads and easy to use.. And they sync with a Google account... This is not the case here.. There is just half baked app, made for 10 minutes while most likely the dude what on the WC...
So many stock Bloat but no Reminders app... Again! Did you try to set simple reminder without using Google Now? I did.. You need to go to Calendar, make Event, turn 100 option some ON, some OFF... Just give me a simple App like on iOS to make a Reminder in 10 secs.. Is this so hard? I guess it's so much easier than making 10 apps that no one is using...
Next: Nothing about Daydream... I guess it won't work with P9...
Next: Again Updates: Sammy released 4 BETA updates, iOS releases many Betas to make sure everything is OK when the final is released to the public.. Huawei still on 1st beta!!!! And most likely this will be the last... We will get Official release full of bugs and will have to wait months for a fix! Thank you Huawei!!!
Next: Huawei is one of the last OEMs that still hasn't uploaded their Stock apps on the Play Store. And we need to wait Months if there is a problem with some of the stock apps! Did you use the stock Huawei keyboard? Did you see how outdated it is? Doesn't have even all the emojis... Not talking about he look from 2008....
Next: Video recording software. Pixel uses software stabilization too, but it's so much better. Video recording quality is ridiculous for a phone at this price... Again I think someone did the coding while was doing his work on the WC... If Pixel can have a lot better recording with software stabilization why we should settle with suck a Joke?
This is why I won't buy another phone from Huawei. Too much negatives for me. And feeling sorry I didn't get the S7... The metal build was more important for me, but i did a mistake.. Should have taken the Glass.. Obviously other OEMs are doing a lot better job...
P.S: Biggest deal breaker: Updates... !
What's the problem if we're currently using Nougat Public Beta? I don't see any fallback. The official will be rolled out sooner or later.

Hi Martin, thanks for sharing your opinion, which you're very much entitled to of course.
I'm not too worried about the update. It'll come. It's my experience that almost ALL OEMs are slow at updating to the latest version (Samsung, LG, Oneplus). And when the update comes it's either full of bugs (Oneplus) or makes your phone come to a screeching halt (Samsung).
Notes app... I haven't found anything better than Google Keep for that and it syncs across my devices. Reminders I usually set via the calendar which isn't really an issue for me, but I'm sure there are reminders apps in the Playstore.
Granted, Huawei does have quite a bit of bloat on it, BUT... It doesn't seem to have an impact on either battery life or speed of the phone for me. For me my P9 is my first phone which even after a good 5 months usage is still just as swift and fluid as the first day I got it. And everything just works.

I am not saying it's a bad phone. It's a great phone, but the support is kinda poor. I am not rushing for the Nougat. I don't mind waiting if they will release a really stable version. Not happy that they are on the 1st beta and maybe this will be last and while most problems will be fixed, while they fix them most likely there will be a new one. And there is not a big improvement in Nougat. They could expand some things, make them better. It most of the time color change...
Don't mind the bloat too, I put all the stuff in a folder and forget they exist.
As I said the phone is great, but they could work a little better on the software.

Yeah. Have nothing else to do, decided to troll. Nowadays if you say something people disagree is trolling.
Here in Bulgaria - Beta 1. In the official beta thread no reports for another update, but you got 3.. Strange.
Well the P8 won't be updated due to the same reasons as the Xperia Z3 from Sony. The Kirin used in the sP8 simply is not compatible with Vulkan and therefore Googles Certification Process for Android 7. As this does not happen regularly, you should be able to see updates for your P9 for at least 2 years i guess.

Are you invited for beta test? If not, what is the cust for bulgaria?
Why more betas than stable?
Better is to modify 6.0 and make a backup, if 7.0 got bugs in first global releases, then u can go back.
Why we need the same like other manufacture? Its enough now.
For every stuff have their pros / cons no one the best just find the one that fit for you, Huawei do good progress (not the best) and I dint see any new in software in other phone all are same / running on native Android ,you can go for non OEM firmware phone if need more software modification , but Huawei phone I think thay made for standard / daily driver like Apple...
Sounds like the op should have gone to Samsung, you are basically criticising the huawei because its not a samsung.....
I came from samsung and most of the things you point out as negatives are positives to me.
Placement of fingerprint scanner is perfect, touchwiz is awful and filled to the brim with bloat and ugly icons.
You complain about updates, just buy a samsung and see how long before you end up rooting it just so you can get an update or remove bloatware.
Sent from my EVA-L09 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Some of these points are valid, however, the software is as it is because Huawei is a Chinese brand. Huawei is huge in china, and in china, this software is what sells. And if you don't like the stock apps, just download new ones. If you don't like the launcher, download a new one. That is the beauty of android. There are points of EMUI that I don't like either, but most of them I was able to fix by downloading apps and customizing what I could in the settings.
Has somebody forced you to buy the Huawei? If you have bought the phone without acquiring some information before is your fault.
You knew about the update, the software and the pro a d cons, why are you complaining?
If you thought that the samsung was better than the Huawei why you bought it? Take a s7 edge and be happy.
You could install a Rom anyway

How do you know how bad is a phone without using it at least for a month? Do they write the Cons in your country? Because here they don't. Yeah I will install a garage rom to fix my phone...
If I knew how bad this phone will be I was going to get the S7 without thinking twice...
I don't get people like you... Why don't you keep your pointless opinion for yourself. What, do only people with positive experience should write here? I am sharing my experience with this phone. And hope it will help to people who are thinking about getting this phone, thinking it's a great deal and great phone... I don't want people the give their money like me for something that's not worth it... And why you shouldn't too!

In most European countries after you buy a phone and open the box, you can't give it back or exchange for another brand.
And it's Shipment, not SOLD... Still it's a great phone, for most people who are not too much into phones or know what other phones can do or how often they are updated, or don't care about updates they would be very happy with this phone. I am happy most of the time while using it. Small things are ruing my usage and this is the problem, they are small, fixable but no one is fixing them.

AOSP Oreo Project for Fire HD 10 (2017)
DESCRIPTION:
This is a project to compile an Oreo ROM for Fire HD 10 2017 (Suez) from scratch, using stock Google sources for 8.1.0_r23. Now that my project for compiling Safestrap had been put on halt, I'm thinking about compiling this to be compatible with FlashFire.
PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD:
I know that placeholder threads are not allowed on XDA. So, this thread is open for suggestions by everyone! But, if a lot of people want LineageOS instead of AOSP, tell me immediately, because it will be impossible to change after a few days. I chose AOSP because it is fresh, and got latest sources. :yum:
TESTING:
Please take into account that I don't own this device, so please excuse for any delays that may happen.
SOURCES:
https://github.com/LoneFlux/android_device_amazon_suez
Thank you, and I hope that we'll be able to run fresh Oreo cool on this little (not really) tablet!

I don't know enough about it to be sure, but based on comments on the Amazon Fire 7 forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64804381&postcount=7 and the fact that all custom ROMS for the Fire 7 are Lollipop based I assumed this was the case. I do have an old Kindle Fire HD 7 (Amazon Tate) with a Nougat based ROM, but this requires an unlocked secondary bootloader which is flashed before the ROM. Why something similar can't be done for newer Amazon devices is above my pay grade, but I know these already have locked secondary bootloaders preinstalled.
Edited to finish post: submitted accidentally incomplete.

Really, I'm not going to kneel in front of Amazon because of this. I'm getting the keys, one way or the other.
For me personally I wouldn't even care if it was AOSP or LineageOS, all we really need would be a clean OS near to stock, maybe rooted and safetyNet passing and everything would be fine.
But please, don't wake false expectations or hope...don't get me wrong, I would really be grateful to use the tablet with a nice OS like AOSP or lineage, but I surely was disappointed when I opened the thread...

Wow, sorry about that! @diplomatic can you please shed some light on whether it's possible to install an 8.1 system without touching the boot? If it doesn't, I'm going to compile a Lollipop ROM for now, you will not regret flashing it, anything is better than the bloated so-called "FireOS"
Well, I've never ported a ROM myself, so keep that in mind. IMO, you should first try to build a Lollipop ROM, at least as a stepping stone to a more recent version. Because it's kind of a nightmare trying to port binaries from the stock FW to a different version of Android. I'm not sure if it's possible to keep the stock boot image. Every ROM build produces its own boot image that includes a ramdisk. I guess it's possible in theory with some hacks. But you really have to know what's going on.
Oh, and I would really really recommend for LoneFlux to get his own Fire HD for this project. I don't really know how this is possible to do remotely. This will require some intense experimentation, testing and reverse engineering to get done. It's an uphill battle to say the least...
I have hope!
I am currently working on a 2017 Fire HD 10. What I find horrible about amazon products like this is that they really don't want the user to be able to get away from amazon crap. Netflix cannot be used on this device unless you go through amazon stuff. Even though technically speaking the regular app is available through side-loaded google play, it will still not install through google play because of a amazon app that checks for side-loaded apps like netflix. Vimeo is another app that will not work. Several games that are also available from amazon for a fee but also available on Google play is also blocked.
So, this particular tablet came from ebay. The seller refuses to spend any time de-registering it from amazon(which would literally take less than 5 minutes) so it dooms me to not being able to get full functionality from Amazon because you cannot re-register a fire if there is a current registered user. Great stuff, really. The anti-theft systems do serve a purpose and I understand that, but come on. This is a prime example of being taken advantage of. The seller is not being reasonable, bad rating, but it does nothing really. So I am stuck with a tablet that is useless for about 20% of the things that I want to do with it.
I have rooted it, and uninstalled a lot of the bloatware on it. Then I side-loaded several sdk files from google to get their services working...and they do work well. I would really love to see a Android OS come out for this that has nothing to do with Amazon.
If you want to root, there is a good thread here at xda that will give you about 18 steps(pretty easy though) to root.
Side-loading google services is really easy too, just google it.
To any who read this put the word out, that we want to see a real version of oreo or nougat come out for this thing...and if you know of one then please post links.
REDACTED
I have a rooted Fire HD10 on 5.6.0.1, and it really is a great tablet, the OS however is not.. I'm following the amazing work you guys are doing, and I have high hopes for the project!

Excuse me, but that was clear for the last several generations. These Amazon Fire products are the most locked down things ever. It's pretty obvious Amazon has been doing everything in its power to keep you from unlocking them. That's because their revenue directly depends on them being locked down. You can be sure that they're not making much if any profit on the hardware. This tablet for example, is just a gateway to everything Amazon: shopping, movies, books, etc. I mean, the HD10 is priced at $110 on sale. A similar tablet, the Asus Z301MF, with the same chip, resolution and so on, is $220. If Amazon was interested in selling you just another Android tablet, you can bet it would be in the latter price range. So I don't get why people who care at all about modding their Android device keep buying these stupid things and rewarding companies for locking down devices. Same deal as discounted smartphones that are tied to your phone carrier. No profit is made on the handset itself. You should know what you're getting into beforehand.

The exact reason we know that they are never going to release a BL unlock.
Anyway, I received this as a gift. I knew about FireOS (and I hoped to put stock Android on it, and I was surely shocked to see that there's not at least root, I knew about root because I rooted my good old SM-G360H with Kingoroot, just to remove the preloaded 'Internet' app and use Chrome as a system app.) and to be honest, I was just an another one like 99.9% of device owners, knowing nothing about these modding things then, that's before 5 months, in December 2017. I agree with what you said, but, more than the joy of a modded device, I appreciate the excellent learning path provided by these devices. I didn't knew about ADB at all when I received this, now I can compile a custom ROM from scratch.
Summarizing, if it weren't for the bloated FireOS and my locked-down Amazon Fire HD 8, I'd still recognize ADB as a misarranged collection of weird letters.
Excuses Excuses.
I did not purchase this, a friend did. I am simply trying to get it to function correctly. A long story short. This tablet is on the black list at Amazon because it was not properly de-registered before it was sold. My friend who bought it did not know this, and was having issues getting anything to work because everything is tied to the amazon subscription services. He sent it to me, I immediately called Amazon and was told it was black listed(meaning it was never going to be able to be registered to a new user until the old user removed it from their list of registered devices). My friend has been attempting to get in touch with the ebay seller who sold it, and has had no luck. It is after the 14 day satisfaction guarantee which ebay seems to want to enforce even though the auction where my friend purchased this said specifically that the tablet was 100% working and Amazon ready.
So I side-loaded google services and play store which allows the tablet to do most everything, but NETFLIX and a few other apps are not usable at all(says they are not compatible) because Amazon requires these apps be downloaded through them, even though fundamentally the apps are the same.
So, this is the story of what led me to look into a custom rom. Anything new enough to run Netflix and be compatible with this tablet would be good enough, but no one has one because of the trouble with the loader. I have yet to see anyone post anything about Fire HD 10(2017) being capable of running a normal Android OS.
ADB is nice, it will let you get rid a quite a few amazon tied apps, but no matter what you do, you are still tied to them and if you cannot register then you will not have full functionality because some things just won't work through Google Play.

Netflix and Fire HD 10
I am uncertain. Let me explain quickly what it is that I believe is wrong.
I do not have the ability to download anything because of it being blacklisted as I mentioned before unless I download it through google play. I am assuming side loading it is the same as using google play? Because I cannot find the app on the net that does not bring it through the play store...or amazon.
If you know differently please explain.

Did not find a general Meizu forum on XDA so I decided to start a thread here.
I got Meizu X8 two days ago. Seems to be a great phone for the price. Paid only $202 on the Meizu Official Store on Aliexpress.
Highlights.
Snapdragon 710
4/64, 6/128
IPS 6.15" 1080x2200
IMX362 f.1/9 Phase detection with dual pixel
3210mAh
151.2mm*74.6mm*7.8mm
USB-C
First impression is very good. I have previously owned Meizu 15 Plus and Pro 6 Plus, both of these phones had a lot of lag and stutter, X8 is much smoother and overall faster. Battery life seems good too. Drain around 12% per hour when the screen is on. Around 3-4% over 8 hours at night. Respectable stats taking into consideration that the battery is only 3200mAh. However, the best thing about X8 is the design. It looks much better compared to the Xiaomi Redmi-series. Love the small bezels and tiny notch, also build quality is really solid thanks to the metal frame around the phone. The IPS-panel is also very good and better than other phones with a similair price. I would say the screen is actually better than Pocophone F1 which I owned one month ago. On the bad side, swipe gestures are not as good as on MIUI.

I made a quick and dirty photo comparison with Redmi Note 5 today. Watch it here:

I've just received this 3 days ago. Would agree with everything you have mentioned so far. Great phone for the price & like you, I had the Pro6 plus as well & this is a much better model. Battery does seem to last quite well considering it isn't that big, screen is nice & vibrant.
No real complaints so far apart from losing the ability to root the phone as with all models up until Flyme 7. I did try using the Meizu root tool but they haven't released/allowed it for the X8 yet.

Thanks alot for this! I was looking through the forum for the right Google camera APK but could only find the 16th version. Installed & working well.
May I ask what firmware/version you have? I was sent the Russian/Global version which means I can't change to either "A" or "G" so may be limited with future firmware upgrades or at least playing around with different versions like I used to with my Pro6 plus.
I've searched for anyway to change however there doesn't appear to be any way to do this currently.

I am using the global firmware, version: 7.1.7.1G. I bought mine on the Meizu Store on Aliexpress.
When I got the phone a earlier version of G-firmware was installed. However, it was not possible to update it OTA so I downloaded 7.1.7.1G. from Meizus homesite and made a clean flash from the recovery.
I dont expect a lot of updates on the global firmware. Meizu have a really poor track record when it comes to updating g-firmware. However, this phone runs great as it is now so I am satisfied anyway.

Thanks & yes, I don't expect much in the way of global updates. I was more thinking that with the G firmware one has the option to change to the A version which gets regular updates. I like playing around with different firmwares but having the RU version it won't be possible unless someone finds a way.

Sounds really odd that it is not possible to flash china firmware on your device. I have had Meizu phones with "vendor roms" but always flashed china firmware on these.
It is usually possible to flash china firmware on devices with global firmware (but not the other way around). I had Meizu 15 Plus with the chinese firmware, had to pay $15 to a guy who changed the device ID to global, it was then possible to flash the global firmware. Perhaps you can send him a message and ask about your problem: https://www.facebook.com/nguyenle.huu.5
I will probably stay on global firmware on my device. Android Auto and google contact sync does not work on chinese firmware.

Apparently with Flyme 7 they have removed that option. I was digging around at 4PDA & everyone there confirmed it wasn't possible if RU version was on the phone. Not sure why this would be as the only apparent differences I can see are specific Russian app's which are all linked to Yandex, perhaps there is some agreement between the two?
Thanks for the contact, I'll ask the question to see what's possible....

Yes, ask him. He might be able to help you.
Another option would be to sell the phone second hand and buy a new one with global or chinese firmware. It is dirt cheap now. Meizu Note 9 also seems like a good phone.
I tested both the stock camera and the gcam quite a lot yesterday. Night sight on gcam works great and is really fantastic . However, I do feel that the stock camera is as good as gcam in most other scenarios. That is a bit surprising since on the Xiaomi-phones I have owned, gcam is usally much better than the stock camera across the board.

I did the same today as I was with the kids watching a school Easter parade! I found the same as you noted, both seem to work as well in daylight as did the video mode in both. Night definitely works better with Gcam.
Ehm...
I want to unlock this device.
Is it possible?
I have this mobile since May, so far it is going very well and I am waiting for Flyme 8 that will leave for December. Thanks for the apk of the gcam I tried several and they did not work.
Install the gcam but the image remains frozen when I want to take a picture

It was, now unlock tool and twrp is lost somewhere one of the chinese internet pages. It is a shame, though that phone born with treble but meizu is not updating android version, they dont even need to change any vendor, and also there is no developer support to do anything for treble. Looks like we are stuck with flyme and android 8.1 forever

Clear gcam's data from setrings/apps. And be sure you have the right version. Also some gcams doesn't shot without hdr+ is open.
Install another version of gcam but I prefer to use the native camera app for now
