[Geek Lab] Why Do Entry Level Phones Possess Larger Battery than High-end Models? - Honor 9A Guides, News, & Discussion

Battery life is a major factor when determining which phone to purchase. Most of us are glued to our phone screen for hours on end, and today's all-powerful apps are more power-hungry than ever – so a lengthy battery is simply a must. However, you may have noticed that many high-end expensive phones only come with a capacity in the range of 4,000 mAh, if not lower, while entry-level models easily match this, sometimes far exceeding it with staggering 5,000+ mAh batteries.
This holds true for the recently released Honor 9A, which provides for exceptional battery life, which is only enhanced by an impressive Ultra power saving mode that sustains the phone for a mindboggling 12 hours on a 5% charge. The large-capacity battery and advanced settings ensure that the phone will always stay on its feet, until you get home or can swing by the office for an overdue refill.

You're probably wondering why there's an inverse relationship between price and battery life. After all, wouldn't it be more natural for expensive phones to offer a larger battery, given that it's a desirable trait? Why is it that only budget phones manage to pack the massive battery capacity that we as users clamor for?
The answer may surprise you – differently-priced phones target distinct user demographics, and thus, are the subject of differing R&D priorities and selling points.
High-end phones tend to be all-round performers, and are highlighted by lightning-fast mobile processing, advanced chipset/software, and efficient heat removal. They're also designed with the goal of balancing technical prowess with component size, milking the best possible performance out of the slimmest possible body. As a result, expensive phones usually focus on system and algorithm optimizations, including those related to extending the battery life.
Budget phones, by contrast, are fashioned to satisfy niche customer demands related to battery life and durability, and to do so in the most economical possible manner. So manufacturers tend to equip such phones with a large battery, which makes them slightly bulkier, saving on otherwise costly software improvements. This is generally an acceptable trade-off for budget phone users.
The smartphone market is unimaginably vast, and populated by a wide range of customers that want different things and are willing to pay different amounts. Expensive models that maximize all-round performance, and durable budget phones – they're designed with different user groups in mind, and there's nothing strange about that.
However, that general principle can also be a massive oversimplification – there are in fact entry-level phones on the market that feature really impressive performance. While it's true that they can't quite hold up to latest iPhones or high-end Huawei models, they offer far more than their modest price tags would suggest. Or in other words, you get what you pay for… except when you get more than that!

Xiaomi Mi4C Is Official With Snapdragon 808, 3GB RAM & an Amazing Price Tag

Back when Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi Mi4i flagship in India, Chinese users felt a bit left out. The device was good in looks as well as specs and the local market could have used a device like the Mi4i. But little did they know that Xiaomi had something even better for its domestic market, and a few minutes back, it made the Xiaomi Mi4C flagship official. Just like the previous leaks and rumors predicted, the Mi4C flagship will be much better in terms of specs and value than its international brother, the Mi4i. I am sure after seeing the specs and the pricing of the new device, Chinese users will be delighted for sure. So, without wasting any more of your time, lets take a look at what this amazing device has to offer.

Looks wise, there’s hardly anything changed in the new Xiaomi Mi4C. You get the same smooth back finish with a strong rectangular body as its international brother. While this may sound a bit simple, especially in a market where metal bodied smartphones are preferred, the company compensates this clean look with its numerous color offerings. You can choose between five different colors according to your liking, including yellow, white, pink, blue and black.
But this is where the major similarity ends. Under the hood, the Xiaomi Mi4C comes with the much more powerful Snapdragon 808 . On the other hand, the Mi4i had the slower Snapdragon 615. This is a great move from Xiaomi since 808 will ensure the fastest performance in its price segment, which is exactly what the MT6795 powered Redmi Note 2 did . There are two version of the Mi4C, one with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage while the othe r with 3GB RAM and 64GB of storage. With Adreno 418 GPU and the above specs, the Xiaomi Mi4C manages to score much better than competitors in the price range. According to the benchmark score revealed by the company in the presentation, the Mi4C managed to score about 57K on AnTuTu , which is even better than MX5 and Huawei P8. Clearly, you won’t be disappointed with the phone’s performance.
The display will be of 5-inches with full HD 1080p resolution . It is said that the Mi4C’s display will be 20% slimmer than traditional panels. The company has compared its size with the recently announced Apple iPhone 6S. As you can see, the dimensions are almost the same as the 6S, despite having a slightly larger display. Also, Xiaomi has made sure that the bezels are quite thin, making it around 30% thinner than average smartphones.
The company has also paid special attention to the Mi4C’s camera. The phone comes with a 13MP Sony IMX258 rear sensor with PDAF . This should ensure great images with fast focus. What’s more, the company has upgraded the algorithm to ensure that low light photos come out bright , with more detail and less noise. You can check out the image below to see how it works in real life.

Levitating Smartphones? New Magnetic Charger Makes It Happen

Okay. There are dozens of new cell phone chargers that have come out in the last few years that do everything from disinfect your phone to shut down the charging process once your phone is topped up (if you haven’t unplugged it yet). They also come in all shapes and sizes now, including one that’s roughly the size of a credit card. But, there’s a new smartphone charger that’s trying to work its way into the hearts and minds of the public that comes with a nifty trick we’d normally associate with somebody like Criss Angel or David Copperfield: it makes your phone levitate.
The OvRcharge
Yes, these masters of illusion aren’t the only ones with magic up their sleeves. It’s called the OvRcharge, and it’s a wireless charger than can levitate your smartphone using magnets instead of slight of hand or distraction. My first thought when I heard about this was aren’t magnets supposed to be bad for computers? I thought you could wipe your memory that way. Apparently, that’s not a legitimate concern (so much for my knowledge of electronics). The thing is, though, that this charger looks really cool when it’s in use. At first glance, it appears to be a small, polished block of wood that might serve as a stand for some type of knickknack or a trophy pedestal. Nope.
Kickstarter
If you’re someone who has to have the latest gadget or gizmo and/or are big on novelty items, this might be something for you. The OvRcharge is currently making a bid for backing on Kickstarter, where the group behind it hopes to have it out and available to the public by an estimated December 2016 release date. So far, AR Designs has received roughly half of the financial backing needed to fulfill orders and begin shipping. They’re based out of Toronto, Canada. If they aren’t able to reach their funding goal of $40,000 CAD by August 18 of 2016, you can probably forget about getting one this year.
Cell Phone Chargers
In order for this “wireless” charger to work, users of the product have to slip their phone inside a thin case that comes with the base unit. The case actually looks like the kind you’d buy to protect your phone, but less clunky and clumsy. The special case consists of two main parts: an electrical induction receiver and a magnet for holding your phone aloft. As far as cases, AR Designs says, “We offer most popular model's cases but it is not possible at the moment to carry all types of cases, in this case we are offering third party attachment to work with your own case and supplied magnet (so generally speaking it works with all kind of phones or most of em).”
Charging Base
The attractive charging base comes in two sizes and three colors choices. The only difference between the two models, besides a slight difference in size, is the output current rate: the smaller is 500mAh and the larger offers 700 mAh. Both models are said to be fully compatible with all of their cases and receivers. The unit is powerful enough to levitate 600 grams and charge it, so tablets aren’t a problem. You can order the bases in stains that include dark, walnut and cherry. If you’re interested in learning more about how the OvRcharge works and costs associated with it, check out their Kickstarter page for all the details.

Battery mods long term reviews

Been using these for a while now, decided to do a long term review.
-incipio I own 2, the wireless charging and non wireless charging version. Been using these for about 6 months.
-Mophie juice pack, been using this one for about 3 months.
I'm using these in efficiency mode, I'm trying to improve my z Force battery longevity and so far it really show. I'm a heavy user and usually I start to see lower battery life within 6 months on all my previous device. I completely discharge these pack, it's the worse case scenario for a lithium battery.
Let's start with the incipio, it's a 2220 Mah. I mostly use this one when I'm home swapping back and forth between the wireless and non wireless version. 6 months down the road, the capacity drop is severe,I don't have exact numbers but I would say close to 50 %. I'm disappointed, for the prince point both of the pack show extremely poor life cycle.
Pro
-great grip and build quality,
-not to bulky
-add wireless charging,
Cons
-price,
-poor charge/discharge cycle,
-no charging port on the mods,
Mophie juice pack,3000mah. This is my daily driver,so far I'm extremely satisfied with this product. I am yet to see any sign of capacity drop. The battery finish is somehow slippery. I feel the price is more justified on this mods,
Pro
-good build quality
-not sign of reduce capacity, even with heavy use,
-charging port on the mods
-battery level indicator,
Cons
-bulky
-no wireless charging
-finish give poor grip,
Great long term follow up.
Replacing battery packs is certainly easier than opening up the Z in order to replace the battery. Using the battery packs as they were meant (essentially draining them) will certainly diminish their overall capacity/life span. Too bad it happened so quick. I thought lithium ions were supposed to stay at 100% capacity for at least 500 cycles.
Any comments on the size/weight difference between the Mophie and the Incipio?

Way thicker, almost twice as thick and heavier.

[Discussion] Are 48MP rear camera plus 25 MP Selfie Camera the best KSP of View20?

One of my friends asked me how about Honor View20, what is the 48MP+25MP, Is it worth buying? What's your opinion?
Ofcourse if he can afford it. Its real 48 MP and front cam is amazing too
There's a video review from Ben's Gadget Review, and the photos look really impressive, especially low-light photos when using "pixel binning".

Used this phone during Honor 10 lite launch on 15th. Camera is amazing
Been using the phone for 2 days now, given the price, it is absolutely mind blowing. It is easily at the same level of phones several hundred pounds more expensive.
The camera quality is amazing, and the AI focus/item recognition is great. The only thing I don't like about this phone is the lack of a baked in dark mode, but there are plenty of themes that fix that problem with a few taps.
The processor the phone comes with is currently the fastest on the market until snapdragon release a new chip I believe, and it really shows. I haven't hard closed a single app since turning the phone on for the first time (just keep them in the background) and it's not impacted it at all.
Magic UI can take some getting used to, but the non-Chinese versions of the phone allow launcher changes with no hassle if you want to use something else.
The phone doesn't have built in contactless charging, but at the asking price, there has so be some sort of downside (if contactless charging is an advantage, it never works well for me)
So far there's absolutely nothing bad I can say about this phone other than I wish it supported standardised expandable memory, but I got the 256GB model, so it's not a big issue for me. There are rumours that the phone might support Huawei's proprietary SD card, but no confirmation.
It's got a beautiful design (I'm sticking with the clear case that comes in the box), it's amazingly fast, it has one of the best camera sensors available on the smartphone market and the battery life is fantastic (4,000 mA). If you aren't a brand loyalist and are looking for a phone upgrade, there's no reason to not buy this phone unless it's out of your price range (buy on contract!!)
It's balanced smartphone, it check lists every users needs & fulfilled the demands without spending too much money! It's a win-win for Manufacturers as well as for the Consumers. Honor View20 is one step ahead in Camera, Performance, Design.

A statement from XDA regarding the best overall Smartphone at this very moment.

I'm still wondering why so many users of XDA/buyers of a new device are so negative about the Apple devices. Of course, there are tons of Android manufacturers to choose from when you want to buy a new device, but there is only one Apple. Even XDA acknowledges now that the Apple iPhone 13 Pro is the best overall Smartphone you can buy. This is not only amazing, as XDA is in principal an Android forum, but it gives full credits to Apple's innovation technology. Read it all in this link and you will see that Apple is the winner in October 2021. Kindest regards, kuzibri

Rounded corners, no SD card, no spen and more limited customization options.
Picked up another new unlocked Note10+ 256/12gb ram for $800. Another $200 for a V30 card yields a 1.25tb dual drive handheld.
My heavy used 2 yo 10+ still looks and runs like new. One battery replacement so far. It's solid build and fast, stable performance influenced my decision.
Cases and screen protectors I already own.
Best of all, near zero* learning curve.
*a few bumps from Q vs Pie
Thanks, but nevertheless XDA is very clear in it's choice

You're welcome, however I'll remind you that time has yet to decide. Hold on to your candles...
I recall all those glowing Fold reviews of years ago... not.
Display shootout 10+ vs 13 Pro

iPhone 13 Pro Max OLED Display Technology Shoot-Out
www.displaymate.com
10+ 0.4 JNCD vs 13 Pro 0.5 JNCD, the 10+ more than holds it's own with color rendering.
Warning, reading those reviews may make you go blind
It's not the first time OP here on XDA is promoting Apple phones, wants to make us believe here that Apple phones are the better choice.
May be worthwhile to know:
An Apple iPhone 12 Pro got produced for 404$, it got / gets sold on Amazon for 950$.
IMO an insanely high profit margin.
My POV:
Apple iPhones are nothing more than a status symbol: either you can afford it or you can't.
hi @jwoegerbauer, thanks for your personal opinion. To state that Apple iPhones are nothing more than a status symbol, is IMPO a bit shortsighted. You cannot deny that it's also a very good, complete, reliable and secure smartphone which indeed costs a lot of money.
Regarding customizations, my homescreen looks exactly the same as on my former Android devices, so I do not see the difference. Apple's iOS14.5 and 15 became much more flexible with customizations, e.g. creating your own home display with widgets, etc. See added image.
Kind regards kuzibri
