notifications on nova launcher - Huawei P40 Pro Questions & Answers

I have managed to install play services on my p40 and am now using nova launcher.
I have notification dots enabled however I have found that I am not getting dots on the icons like I should and wonder if huaweis power management is interfering some how?
Any ideas?

Have you given Nova 'notification access' in the main phone settings?

Yes, I think that was part of the initial installation process.
Like I said I do get some come up but I'm pretty sure it's actually probably a Huawei aggressive battery management problem.
That's probably why the battery is so good on this phone as it shuts everything down!

Serious FLAW w/ Huawei Phone Manager - "Recent Apps" & 3rd party App Startup - HELP!
Hi,
I am having a 2 MAJOR deal-breaker issues with my GEM-703L B112 EMUI 3.1:
* Startup Apps (including Alarm Clocks, Hangouts, 3rd party Email client) don't start after a reboot resulting in missing notifications
* Protected Apps (including Alarm Clocks, Hangouts, 3rd party Email client) get killed/closed when "flicking up" to clear all apps using Recent Apps button resulting in missing notifications
The culprit of this issue seems to be Huawei's Phone Manager. All apps mentioned above are set as Protected Apps, Trusted permissions, allowed all notifications, and background data is enabled.
If anyone has a solution for this issue, *PLEASE* help! I really love the phone but must have this resolved since these are VITAL, especially for my alarm clock - not waking up for work is not an option!
I will be rooting once I get the bootloader unlocked via unlock code from Huawei at which time this issue can be fixed by making these important apps as system apps (thanks to ajsmsg78 for the suggestion as well), but until that time and for many of those who are and won't be rooted, a solution is clearly very badly needed.
Lastly, I believe this issue also exists for other Huawei phones having EMUI such as the P8, etc.

Thanks for your reply trurl3, my energy saving level is set to "Performance" which is the least aggressive level, but I cannot find this "Power Genie" app. Where would this be found through?

Don't bother doesn't help, I've power genie disabled and it's on Performance, still same issue.

UPDATE: strangely enough, my startup apps have now slowly started to start up after reboot but not right away. As I do not yet have root on this device, I simply cannot explain why in the world this positive change had happened. I am almost afraid to reboot again because I will be frustrated if/when they do not start up.
The app that I really need to start up is called Alarm Clock Xtreme which is my goto Alarm app for years now. At first it was not showing the permanent notification in the notifications and the Alar, would not go off. Now after a few minutes after reboot it is showing up. Not sure what is going on here code-wise.
Anyone have any input here or a solution for the Recent Apps button killing Protected Apps?

Was a problem on the X1 I had as well. Things like google hangouts would get closed and you'd never get notifications, even if it was set as a protected app. From what I can tell only the Huawei apps are truly protected...
You have to root and get a rom with the phone manager removed.
And even then, some things still get closed once in a while, which is odd. There's is plenty of free memory, so not sure why the Huawei phones mess up the memory management so much.
This Huawei memory management issue is really the only bad thing about this phone... Android has a great memory manager built in, don't mess with it
Otherwise, its perfect for me...

Thanks omniphil, I'm wondering if this particular issue could be worked around since startup apps are working but only after a delay (see "UPDATE" above) by having a third party app monitor if a process is killed or having a Tasker profile to relaunch it right away, but then we are back in the same paradox where that third party app or Tasker profile would also be killed when "flicking up" to kill all apps.
@ajsmsg78 , @elio321 , @mcdhol_24 , @hagba , @Djiban:
Perhaps there is a certain third party app or Tasker profile can designate itself with "priority" mode of some sort and can bind itself to notifications or accessibility so that it would be relaunched? Please note I am just brainstorming here! Input would be gladly appreciated...

Hi All and @ajsmsg78, @elio321, @mcdhol_24, @hagba, @Djiban, @omniphil,
I have noticed that unlike my other Protected apps, my SwiftKey keyboard app does not get killed when flicking up to close all apps using the Recent Apps button. I understand that this is obviously because the selected keyboard is required to stay in memory, but can't this or similar exception be leveraged to keep a Tasker profile in memory to relaunch critical apps?
Surely I am not the only unrooted user with this issue!
Thanks again.
I think the big question is, why are you swiping up to kill all apps? They aren't running in the background anyways, they are just place holders. There isn't really any need to kill all the background apps in android anymore, it uses more battery life. Just leave them all there and let android do what it was designed to do

Hi omniphil, I see what you are saying but killing unused apps does improve the device speed and save on battery usage including background data consumption. I understand that memory is automatically managed by killing apps when more memory is required but the above is not considered in this - just memory.
I fixed this issue by freezing the phone manager through titanium backup. I was also breaking my head over keeping the apps running in the background even if they were killed in the multitasker area. You do need to be rooted to use titanium backup. Hope this helps, it sure fixed the issue for me.

Problems in EMUI 9 Pie Update

Hi everyone,
I just updated my phone to EMUI 9.0 (Indian Variant) and i have a few concerns which i'm listing below.
Wifi and Mobile Network icons have been moved to left side. Is there a way to switch it back to right side?
The recent apps animation and placement(side by side like the iphone) is quite weird. Is there a way to make it stack like in EMUI 8?
When you open recent apps the screen sometimes turns blue. Is anyone else facing such issue?
The tips in new EMUI 9 is quite irritating already. Is there a way to disbale it?
How to access the subscription menu for magazine unlock in EMUI 9? Earlier there was a way to swipe up from the lock screen that opened it directly but now that option opens photos added by me instead of auto downloaded subscriptions.
When you use splitscreen Emui stop showing the recent apps list. I get empty screen with wallpaper. It seems the windows are there, because when I click in the empty space the apps switch, but they are invisible. (Credits Medard22)
Huawei and Honor have officially disabled support for Google camera in their latest EMUI 9. All who got the EMUI 9 will not get the taste of Google camera anymore until they will enable it again. (Credits Zenkilla, Irshad Wani)
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
1. The icons are moved to the left on the Android Pie, you can't move it back.
2. This is also normal on Pie and EMUI 9, and also can't revert. The 'blue screen' never happened to me, I don't know why is that happening to you.
3. The tips will stop appearing after some time. At least they did on my phone.
4. From the lock screen: swipe up, tap the settings button in the right bottom corner (the gear icon) and unlock the phone. It will open the Magazine subscriptions.
I hope I helped.
1. Wifi and Mobile Network icons have been moved to left side. Is there a way to switch it back to right side?
This is because most of the phone launching with notch and Honor has started moving that icon to left. No way to move back untill a working xposed module.
2. The recent apps animation and placement(side by side like the iphone) is quite weird. Is there a way to make it stack like in EMUI 8?
Not possible anymore unless on emui 8 or custom ROM.
3. When you open recent apps the screen sometimes turns blue. Is anyone else facing such issue?
Nope. May a theme you are using is causing this.
4. The tips in new EMUI 9 is quite irritating already. Is there a way to disbale it?
It was there for 2-3 days then stopped.
5. How to access the subscription menu for magazine unlock in EMUI 9? Earlier there was a way to swipe up from the lock screen that opened it directly but now that option opens photos added by me instead of auto downloaded subscriptions.
As mentioned in above comment but in my case, when i opened i found it opening gallery and that's blank.

Its being rolled out in batches. You'll get it soon.
Well my problem with he update is that function, where you could make the alarm ringtone grow louder over time is now gone. I always use very low alarm volume so that I would not get heart attack every morning. Got the update yesterday and the alarm was so quiet that I overslept. After years Google finally bundle it to the stock app and now huawei removes it. Now that´s a progress. Also having Honor View 10 I must say i don´t like the stock camera app. In EMUI 8 there were a handy swiping gestures bringing mode selection and settings, well they are gone now it´s now a bit more ... clunky.
How's your ram usage? I noticed before upgrade I usually have near 1.5~1.8gb free ram I think can't be sure I didn't screenshot it. Now I have 800+mb. Only diference between old android and new android is I add weather widget which didn't eat as much ram. Restart I get 3gb free.
I found a way to revert to the EMUI 8 vertically stacked recent apps, but it requires root. If you use Titanium Backup or something similar to freeze the Huawei Home app and switch to a different launcher, it will revert to the Android 8 style recent apps.
This is weird, because it's as if the Android 9 style horizontal recents is not part of the OS, but a component of the Huawei Home app.
I'm sticking with vertical for now because I was getting the same blue tint that you described on the horizontal recents.

Even i feel the same way now, but give it time to get used to and you'll surely like it.
Also as you said huawei removed what google made default, i have experienced similar thing in the smart unlock tab. Google provides a lot of options to unlock by location, bluetooth etc but huawei trims it as per outs own liking.

This is issue faced by only some users, so i believe we should make a factory reset as i'm about to do in the coming days.
Since you are having issue similar to mine, can you also confirm if you have the magazine unlock tab in the home screen and wallpaper in settings?
Is there any official feedback thread? I found some more bugs. Some webpages have problem rendering their mobile versions on Pie. Also the 3D panorama in gallery doesn't work. After you click on the 3d button it constructs the mesh then freezes Right now I'm not very excited about the update unfortunately.
So I'm the only one that wants to use gestures but can't because my case cover the Sides?

EMUI 11 "power-intensive app" toggle gone?

Hey guys! I finally got the EMUI 11 update a few days ago, but there is something that's driving me crazy since. My P40 Pro is googlefied, and it has been and is working perfectly with GMS, but since I updated I keep getting a notification that the Google Services Framework is a power-intensive app and Huawei recommends me force closing it. I had these before with some apps on EMUI 10 too, like with Line and Facebook, but there used to be an option to turn off the "power-intensive" notification for a certain app. With EMUI 11 that seems to be gone, and I keep getting this notification about Google Services Framework at least twice a day. It is super annoying and I can't find a way to turn it off. I checked around the Battery settings, in the app settings, but the option seems to be gone. I hope one of you figured out how to deal with this, I really don't want to downgrade but I think I will if I can't fix this issue. Looking for help, thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply! At least I know I'm not alone with the issue. Could you clarify your solution? How to ignore it in the battery settings? I couldn't find an option for it.
same here
Okay I'm back after some testing. So first thing I tried was cleaning the cache of the Play Store, Google Services and Google Services Framework -> did not help. After that I compared the version info of said apps on my P40 Pro to my Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and even though the Store was up to date, i found out that the Google Services and GSF hasn't updated on my P40 Pro. I installed an app called "Launcher Google Play Services Settings (Shortcut)", and through that I was able to update my Google Services. It didn't break the installed GMS, but didn't fix the power intensive app notification either. After that I updated the Google Services Framework manully, downloaded the exact version my Mate 20 Pro has (10-6475670). Update went well, It did not break my GMS install, everything works perfectly but hasn't fixed the notification issue. Now I'm testing a workaround that seems to be working, but I'll give it an other day to see if it really works. If it does, I'll post my solution here.
So that wasn't the solution?

Happy new year guys! Sorry for the late reply, as it fixed my problem I forgot about this topic. So the workaround is pretty easy, and it's about disabling notifications for the Optimizer app. EMUI doesn't have the option to disable notifications for Optimizer by default, but it is possible with a third party app called NCleaner, search "Notification Blocker & Cleaner & Heads-up Off" in the Play store. After install it will ask for permission to access notifications, then while the Notification Cleaner is turned on, click on the 3 dots on top right corner, go to settings. Search for the Optimizer app, and click on it (no need to mess around with the toggle, click on the Optimizer itself) and a menu will pop-up where you can completely disable the notifications for said app. After you turned it off, you can actually uninstall NCleaner, and the notifications will keep being turned off for the Optimizer even if you restart your phone, except if you go to the settings of EMUI, and open the Optimizer notifications menu, it will turn itself back on automatically. So install NCleaner, disable the notification for Optimizer with the help of it, uninstall the app, and don't open the notification settings of Optimizer or you'll have to turn it off in NCleaner again. This is actually not the main functionality for NCleaner, it can also hide notifications automatically for the apps, but I think it's easier to just disable it as it is, so NCleaner doesn't have to run in the background eating up battery.

Question Nova Launcher or Android 13 OS problem?

I'm rooted and have mods installed, so they could be part of the problem too.
Anyone else seeing this? Every once in awhile, I'll press the "home" button on the navbar.
And instead of showing me my home screen with icons & such, it only shows my background.
I have to press the home button a second time before my icons and folders show up.

Plenty of people have this issue, some launchers don't work properly, I'm getting others issues as well like folders showing up in recents.
There's no real fix at the moment, you either change launcher or keep the issues.
Darn. Okay, thanks for letting me know that it's not just me.
I haven't had any issues with Nova Launcher. I'm using the Prime version. Perhaps that makes a difference?
Have you changed the settings within the config utility?
Yep, I've had Prime Nova for many years.
I change a TON of settings in the Nova settings.
It doesn't happen often enough to make troubleshooting easy.
I guess I could try resetting it back to factory defaults for a week or so.

You mention that you're rooted and have mods installed...I would definitely look there first. I say this because I use Nova Prime on my 7 Pro and have zero issues. In fact I have been using Nova Prime on all my phones for years without any problems. YMMV
Every single third party launcher and device has this issue (and more) ever since Android 10 came out and tied Recents and Launchers together, it's worse with gesutres but can happen with navbar too.
Those who claim to not have it either ignore it, don't use their device fast or don't mind lag
Lawnchair alpha 4, no issues
Not rooted, qp beta, nova prime, no issues like that on mine.
..certainly no one can have accessibility function for gestures in nova launcher, this is due to google - android 13 security,
double tap would be a bless, so i don't understand why google is providing double tap on the back of the phone, but only strange single tap (lock screen) on the front of the device.. ?
I ran into a similar issue with Android 12 & 13 - it's a little tricky to get the gestures for Nova to work on the lock screen and provided a couple of screen shots to make things easier for you.

I only have that occasional issue if I have a **** ton of memory hungry apps running. And I think it started with the January update
Using total launcher and something similar happens to me. When I use gestures to pull up recent apps, I'll just see my homescreen instead of the apps themselves. Very weird but the behavior still works in that I can press the screen and it goes to the last app, which is what I want majority of the time.
Nova gestures work for me via Accessibility - but only for a few hours. Then, I can't see a note in Accessibility menu for Nova non-malfunctioning. Turning the Allow toggle off and on resolves the problem, temporarily.
