how can i stay up to date with my rooted note 12.2

I have successfully rooted my note 12.2 - thanks to this awesome forum.
With that I can't do OTA or use Kies to stay up to date. So I'd like to know how I can stay up to date as Samsung releases new firmwares? For example I just downloaded the newly released 5.0.2 from Samobile and flashed it with Odin 3.09. That went well but of course it wiped my machine so I'm starting fresh again. I'd like to be able to stay up to date with out a complete re-wipe each time if possible. Thoughts?
As a long time root user I can tell you that the cardinal rule is that one should give up the notion of getting OTA updates for good once one roots for the simple fact that with each major OTA update comes the risk of losing root forever should the update lock the doors on the exploit used to gain root to begin with.
Casual root users are best served by watching forum threads after updates are released to see how more experienced users are fairing with getting their devices up to date. The exception to this is if a custom ROM is installed and the developer updates the ROM periodically to integrate the updated software or features that the device manufacturer releases. Even then, if a major update is released that let's say jumps to a new system like kitkat to lollipop there's a chance that a full wipe can't be avoided. ROM developers typically warn users when clean installs are required, and some even distribute their own OTAs.
I'm a religious user of titanium backup, and I will often dirty flash a ROM update or use prior titanium backups to restore data but this can be risky business when major updates are released because if software or drivers change from one major firmware release to another a backup of a particular application may no longer be compatible and stability may be affected upon restore.
Bottom line, if you want lollipop on your note pro, rooted, can live with the current bluetooth issues and want to be able to update further easily while retaining root then go with a custom ROM like civs and just monitor the thread of that ROM for updates.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the excellent advice. One two more more question on the topic. I had root on KitKat, but after flashing the new stock Lollipop via Odin, I lost root. So after installing the stock Lollipop I had to re-do the root flash via Odin to get root back, thankfully it all worked out. (Lollipop is awesome BTW).
Questions:
1. Was I in danger of forever losing root as you state above or was this a safe route? I understand that OTA and even Kies can make me lose root forever, but what about flashing a stock via Odin?
2. Are you saying that next time there's an update I could try to dirty flash the ROM via TWM (after doing a good backup via Titanium of course)? Basically find ROM on samobile, download, copy to SD card and dirty flash away using these suggestions: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/sthr8/dirty_flashing_what_it_is_and_is_not_lets_set_the/
Typically to keep root the stock recovery is replaced with a custom one, TWRP is the main one used for our device. Stock updates from Samsung downloaded as OTA will typically fail to flash in TWRP. Odin flashing stock images will erase everything including the custom recovery, thus causing loss of root. In other words you'll typically lose root one way or another and the key to retaining it is to not blindly update until a root method is ensured for the next version of firmware. Resign to the fact that with each update you will temporarily lose root and need to redo it. Plan ahead, wait for root confirmation and then update with a plan of how to get root again.
I typically don't TWRP flash stock so I don't know if it works but in the distant past I recall that it wouldn't so thus I never try. Maybe someone can confirm. For me I haven't updated firmware on my note pro for a year now and I am not missing anything. ..

[OTA] US OTA Update with Root/S-0ff?

Just wondering if I'll be able to take an OTA update from 6.0 to 6.0.1 whenever it is available? I received a message saying a software update was available and when I told it to install it, it rebooted into TWRP, checked the current software for about 3 minutes, then rebooted? Upon looking, I am still on 6.0? I had the system check to see if there was still an update available, but it said there was nothing. Maybe it was just a radio update? I am anxiously awaiting the update so that I may install Xposed. Any input would be greatly appreciated :good:

You can't take OTAs with rooted phones and twrp. The OTA looks at the system partition and if anything is changed...it will not install.
You have to either take a backup somebody made with the OTA/stock basically. Flash it via TWRP. Or RUU back to the lastest for your phone. Then, take all OTA updates, then TWRP, Format Data, then SuperSU again, reboot...start/restore phone.
There is no easy way without Dev support/Custom Roms to get latest bases/OTAs right now without wiping/starting over somehow.
This is why having devs creating Roms is really a luxury. Because they already have the proven installer/Rom customized. They will then take OTAs/new bases, roll that into their Rom, and you just do an update/flash, like Viper, and not lose anything, and no need to wipe.
Likely never to happen with this phone since Devs really only work on the Mainline/Flagship M models, like M8/M9/M10 etc...

Honor 8 Update question. Flash Oreo from emui 5

I have recently changed phones and given my Honor 8 to my daughter.
She loves things like snapchat and other social apps.... She is in high school....
Come to find out my rooted stock, with Xposed TWRP , does not like things like snapchat.
So figured would flash newest Oreo on it or a custom rom , then probably do a magisk install. At least that would give me some root options.
Problem is I have tried updating via updater, that didnt work.
And hear that Honor 8 has bootloader lock issues (Found out how to do this from XDA so that may not be an issue).
TWRP (at least the version I have) does not do a nandroid backup.
I would like to save the apps on there but do have them backed up with TB.
I do NOT want to screw up the process of updating and want to do it best and easiest way possible.
What are my best options for doing this ?
Thank you

hi
since 7-8days ago, Firmware finder server is down and we dont have access to it links so, you should wait for it to get back online and use oreo links
but the best instruction i have find is this one :

Snapchat fails because it detects root and xposed. So you could just use magisk hide and delete xposed.

Yes I tried that , but didnt work right. So deciding on just flashing the entire thing over to Oreo.
One of the things I am wondering is what happens if I do a data wipe, and full Oreo flash from TWRP. Will it work or mess things up.
I finally have a hold of the phone today. so doing a full TB right now.
Trying to get a phone out of a hands of a teenager......
oops is EMUI 4.1

I flashed firmware over from Huawei website. and now it is on stock , all with apps staying, no root and stock recovery and locked.
When doing an update VIA settings it tells me everything is up to date.
Will keep working with it ,
Need not to try to do shortcuts and take my time instead. May learn something....
Looks like latest official update is EMUI 4.1 /android 6 Is that right?

Samsung SM-J37V (Help needed)

ok so here is my situation. currently im on stock latest update for this model. i am trying to find the correct stock firmware to download just incase anything goes wrong in the future. What i wanted to do was root the phone even though i wanted the current rom and everything backed up. i dont want to root or modify anything without taking a backup beforehand first. i havent rooted or done phone mods in a while and i have a contract with Verizon for this phone and dont want to brick it or atleast be able to return it to stock before my next phone upgrade incase i have to send it back. im kind of unsure where to start even though i would like to know where i can find the first stock firmware and how to flash it later just incase anything goes wrong. currently i was annoyed by the inability to change the apn settings even to disable ipv6 for the mobile data connection. im not sure it is possible if verizon has it locked and i stay away from ipv6 as much as possible because of privacy concerns so i guess if i cant disable it on the mobile network i will turn mobile data off until it is needed for something i really need while on the go.
here is what i wanted to do:
find a stock firmware file for this model just incase i have to flash to restore all default settings. it doesnt really matter if its updated i would even prefer the original or first one before all the update unless it would be recommended to download the updated one as well.
i was going to root with dr.fone until i heard about magisk because it doesnt modify system boot files or something along the lines of that. the only thing is i would like to know after i root with magisk can it be un rooted without messing up any of the stock files, or interfere with future updates if unrooted?
also i would like TWRP installed as i might want to install custom firmware if possible however if i can i would like to backup the stock recovery before i flash TWRP just incase, unless the custom recovery and everything will be restore with the stock firmware zip that can be flashed above. other than that if i can get this far and get some insight to backup and have things prepared before i dive in to modifying again in hopes i have a backup plan incase anything goes bad.
all help is appreciated and its been a while since i modifying android phones especially for this phone model i been on stock since i had it so im kind of lost in a way since i havent had recent experience for a few years in android modding and rooting in a while. hopefully i can get some feedback as im kind of lost on where to start and dont want to mess up my phone incase i need to get back to everything stock.
waiting for your replies i will get back tomorrow to see if there are any responses. i know this is going to eat up a lot of my time as well and honestly it has been stressing me out even though after i get working on it i should feel better.
Thank You!

New Official Update Messes Up Camera - Suggestions for roms?

There are a few problems I've seen so far:
When taking photos on auto-timer mode they're blurry and out of focus + some specific bug with the gif-creation method.
I've no idea how to send a bug report to Samsung (if you do, do tell) and I really need an operational camera.
So, I decided to install a rom instead.
Recommendations for the roms with the best camera-related software?
Other things I hold as important are night mode and battery saver
Ps before someone brings it up:
I have experience with installing roms. I gave the original rom a try for once. I'll still go over the actual rom threads of course but if you can save a sister some time and share some knowledge, help would be much appreciated.
Thanks a lot and stay safe ya'll
I feel worst camera quality with every update! Don't know what's going on!
IS your Snapdragon or Exynos version?
may update
if you have updated to the may security update i dont think you will be able to flash roms as samsung have locked the phones ((s10e) out, i cannot root anymore and you cant factory reset! i was running stock rom with root and magisk and after flashing may release in odin with patched firmware the phone started acting very strange, flashing screen and unresponsive i had to reflash stock and all is well but no more root, twrp or magisk !! i may be wrong but that is my experience if anyone knows different please tell gutted!
update: was a bit rusty didn't realise the may update needed an updated twrp recovery, I flashed may update on April twrp!! - all fixed now on ctd1 with 104 twrp and root is well, many thanks to all the developers who make it possible, cheers! if you do flash above make sure you don't update your time zone data you will get a notification dont let it install as you will be starting over again!! switch off automatic time updates, this has been my experience! thanks all.
