Note 10+ - Horrible signal strength - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Questions & Answers

I received the Blue Note10+ from the Samsung preorder. (SM-N975U1). I'm using it on T-Mobile.
I'm having serious signal strength issues. My Note 8 is at 3 bars while the Note10+ has 0 or 1 bar while indoors. I usually have full 4 bars with the Note8 when I walk outside, but I rarely hit 3 bars with the Note 10+ wherever I'm at. I've never hit the full 4 bars yet with the Note 10+.
Is anyone having this issue? Any suggestions for a solution?

Bars alone don't tell the whole picture as each phone is calibrated differently. The only way to know for sure is running speed tests and comparing actual signal strength numbers in the settings.

Get the actual signal strength on each phone to compare...I have a TMO version of the S10+ and unlocked versions of the Note, the 10+ and a 9... the db strength measures the same on all phones, yet the TMO version shows additional bars... for example, at 99db to 104db, the tmo shows 3-4 bars, the unlocked 2...
Go to About phone, Status, sim card status to get the actual signal strength...

Same. Pixel 3 works, Note 10 has zero bars and doesn't work. I assume it's not connecting to TMobile bands

I'm on Sprint, got the Note 10+ around 9:30 yesterday. No issues whatsoever.

Can you tell us the dbm compared to the pixel? I'm really curious if I should just flash the tmo firmware before I even bother to load it.

You might need to update the PRL? Assuming it's a new phone. Have you contacted TMO?
EDIT: Seems like TMO is having issues.

I am home now. Dbm here is the same and everything works. I was in the area that had signal problems and Pixel was probably using band 12 whereas Note just lost signal for good

Did you check for software update when you got your phone? When I received my unlocked Note 10 on the 21st, there was a new software update. Although the update didn't call out signal strength specifically, but you never know... After playing around with the device, I flashed it with T-Mobile firmware. I didn't have enough time to test cell signal, but haven't seen issues yesterday and today. The signal strength is on par with my Pixel 2 and S10e

I've run speed test at the same exact spot with my Note 8, OnePlus 6T and Note 10+ and they're all just about the same, between 85-90Mbps DL.

I have one less bar at home but still managed to get 120mb download speed. Havent looked at the dbm readings. Elsewhere its been just as good as my s8+.
Unlocked N10+.

I am on Tmobile and also bought the unlocked (note+) version and ran the update. If you could be so kind, what does flashing the Tmo firmware do (and how do I do it)? Would this give me everything Tmobile puts on their phones? Is there a benefit to doing that? I am curious if that would help with the signal strength.

You just use Odin to flash TMobile firmware for note 10, you will have all TMobile bloatwares and features that built-in T-Mobile firmware. I believe you gain more signal bars. I also think you will be able to do video calling on your U1. I don't have note 10, still hang on with my note 9, N960U1.

So if you flash T-Mobile firmware on your Note 10, you will gain few features:
1) Advanced Messaging - be able to see when person read your sms, when it was delivered or when person is typing a message. You can also send images/videos of a larger sizes about ~10MB. This will only work when you text people that have similar software or that use T-Mobile
2) Video calling will be built in to the phone dialer app - works with phones from T-Mobile that use similar software(LG, Samsung, Moto)
3) Will have 4G LTE wording in the status bar instead of just LTE or LTE+
4) T-Mobile logo on boot and sounds
5) Practically no bloatware - after flashing, during phone setup, you will be asked if you want to install 3 T-Mobile apps: Visual Voice mail, T-Mobile account app and Macfee antivirus - just don't check boxes if you don't need them.
The reason I flash my phones with T-Mobile firmware is that, before releasing they test the update so it would work better on their network and that I have T-Mobile

AWESOME! Thanks for the reply.
I have noticed something about my signal. It may show one bar but compared to my Note 9, so far, it is blowing it out of the water with internet access. The building I work in has a metal roof and typically that spells trouble for fast browsing. The 10+ seems to be accessing sites faster. However using the GPS this morning I could have sworn it told me it lost signal.
*edit*
Forgot to ask...when flashing the T-Mobile firmware does that trip Knox? Is that still a thing worth worrying about?

I haave two conflicting opinions on flashing tmo firmware.
Thing One.
The carriers lie to us. That's why the tmo signal is better. Not because it's better, it's probably a marketing directive. Resetting the Calc of bars shown to dbm is not optimizing anything. It's making its customers not see dead zones and drop outs. Even though you still have no access on the device.
Thing Two.
But what if I'm wrong. Is it impacting my battery life having computationally lower bars?
Oh the madness.
Sent from my SM-N975U1 using Tapatalk

I have zero bars now on N10 with T-Mobile band 66. Unfortunately I have no clue how to check bands on Pixel 3 phone, it gives be 4 bars of LTE

I have the same crap signal strength. My note 4 and 9 no probs. Changed sim card. Changed carrier, took phone To an authorized Samsung service center same problem. I find on Google that and saw how many others are having the exact same problem. The Samsung service center said they've been getting more and more calls on this problem and it's not a software issue it's a hardware issue. They told me there's not a hardware update, meaning there is not an antenna that can be replaced it's Built-in to the phone to where they couldn' change it out

flashprash65 : So are you telling us that we will never have a better signal than we currently have?
That we spent $ 1200 for a product that will never work properly?

4.4.3 baseband messing up with TMo LTE

I updated my N5 to 4.4.3 through this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/development/flashable-stock-4-4-3-supersu-t2771010
could not wait for Google to update my N5.
My wife's N5 was updated through official ota.
We are both on TMobile. Same plan. Same zip code.
At home we use to have both LTE signal at 3 bars out of 4.
After the update I noticed this issue where both phones are connected to LTE but now we have 0 or 1 bar out of 4.
often I see No Network at all.
Changing to 3g or 2g will set the phone back on Edge or HSPA.
I think the new baseband messed it up.
Anyone else experiencing this issue on TMO with N5?
Any ideas?
Thanks
I noticed 0-2 bars of LTE at home but mine has always been like that.
i feel like i have less LTE bars than i did prior to the update. In some areas where I have always had LTE coverage, I have HSPA instead. At work I have less bars - I work very close to home (NYC, Manhattan) so i'm not sure if it a problem as a result of the update or service issues in the city - at least in my case.
Bars and signal strength are not necessarily related. The bar is just telling you what the software is interpreting, there have been tons of signal bar hacks that make it more or less accurate.
What I will say is that the LTE drops are something I've seen before even when I paradoxically had "full bars" on LTE only to suddenly have my phone not actually displaying a connection and then it would, after a moment, drop to H+.

Not to sound like a D1ck,But.(I feel your pain)...Finally someone else besides me having issues and I'm on sprint (insert jokes now)the same thing has happened to me my wife my dad my brother and his wife. All of our data handoffs from 3G/LTE hang.I/we have gotten worse LTE.You are not the only 1.I even adb fastbooted back to 4.4.2 to see if the difference is just in my head. It's not.4.4.2 gave me LTE back again.
I am thinking to flash back the previous baseband. Anyone reversed back to the old radio but staying with 4.4.3? I can tell you that the battery life is better with 4.4.3.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Are you seeing that the behavior of handoffs is different or are you losing your data connection more often than before?
I am also seeing emergency calls only in some places like my job, where previously I had 3 bar lte. But at home it stays with 0 to 1bar very unstable. I am convinced is the new base band. Tmo told me to do a switch from 3G back to lte in network settings. After that didn't work they told me to do a full reset to factory settings. Thinking to flash back to . 23 radio.

Wrong signal strength reporting on G920i?

Weird issue I'm having on a G920i. In Settings -> About Device -> Status, the signal strength is being reported incorrectly. When I first boot the device, it will show accurately and will vary from -90 dBm to -100 dBm when I am at my house, which is consistent with every device I've ever owned. However, after 30-45 seconds, it will start reporting at "-113 dBm 0 asu" and it will simply stay there and will never change, even as I move about. The number of bars in the signal strength icon on the status bar will even change, but in the Status menu, signal strength simply stays at "-113 dBm 0 asu" permanently. Connectivity seems to be fine--I have no problems making calls, browsing the web, etc. The signal strength in the Status menu simply seems to revert to and stick at 113 dBm 0 asu with no explanation or other impact on the phone.
For what it's worth, I've tried both the New Zealand and Singapore AOD1 firmwares from Sammobile.com. Same problem on both. I'm on AT&T in the U.S.
Anybody else seeing anything like this?
Yes it seems both the g920i and g920f all have this problem. Every single device. Please get in contact with Samsung about it, the more people that complain the more likely it will be fixed.
@mupet0000 & @phositadc I've seen you guys in a few forums talking about the Galaxy S6 SM-G920I signal issues... Mine is the same! Swapped 2 phones already and they have awful lte reception... I was hoping a different modem/baseband would help but it looks like it doesn't....plus a few soft reboots as well what's going on? Have you guys experienced any reboots? Can this be fixed with a software update?
OK checked mine and its yes your right. -113 in status however if you type *#0011# in your dialer you'll see the better reception reported. Interestingly this did not happen when I was on the Cricket towers(At&t). I just switched to T-Mobile and I now have the -113 status. My speeds are great but I can't side-by-side compare the radios to anything to know if there is a real problem.

No reboots here. I flashed the aod3 modem last night and things seem a little better on AT&T. On the aod1 modem, I was not getting LTE in a bunch of places that I've always had LTE before. I know the g920i has frequency support for AT&T LTE bands, and I do get LTE, but I must say so far the experience has not been as good as other LTE phones I've had. Not sure if that's the modem firmware to blame or the hardware itself. Probably firmware.

Hey all, I'm in the UK and I have the SGS6 edge on the 3 network here. I use my phone for tethering at all times as I do not have wifi in the house. with my SGS5 before this I could easily run my PC , Tablet my son mobi and his gaming PC all at the same time with no issue. The S5 would run a full signal and load very quickly HD content.
My brand new S6 is disapointing singnal wise from straight out the box. I noticed my signal level fluctuating up and down but very rare dose it show a full signal level. and as for teathering I am finding it very hard to live with.
I will be suprised if Samsung sort this out with firmware. I just had a 150 MB firmware update yesterday and my signal level is the same.
I remember my Nokia N96 having this same fault, and although it was all over the internet back then, Nokia did nothing in all the firmware updates I had. I was going to sell my pristine 7 month old S5..... but I think I will hang on to it for now.
Hey guys, I am on the latest OTA released by Samsung (AOE3 built May 7th) and the problem is still not resolved. LTE signal still awful and LTE signal strength still -113. So far so bad. I have contacted Samsung again, and tomorrow I have a phone call with their support where they will remotely access my phone so I can show them the problem. I will show them and see how it goes, and I'll report back here.
I will make it clear to them that the signal strength is worse than my 2 year old S4, and I will demonstrate the incorrect signal strength value to the support agent. If they tell me it's a non issue or they make some silly excuse instead of investigating, I will simply sell the S6 and get another phone.
This is a huge issue and I'm disappointed that there aren't many people noticing this or reporting it to Samsung. The more popular the S6 gets, the more people will notice that their old phone holds a better signal.

I think it is a widespread issue... I always have 1 bar lte and under my signal status it say - 113dbm which is zero service... It never moves... I'm gonna try custom rom and see if that help but it obviously a antenna/modem baseband issue... Also someone mentioned it could be because the Galaxy S5 uses Cat 4 lte and the S6 uses Cat 6.....its very disappointing! Hopefully it gets fixed or I'll return to the S5...i really want to like this phone..... But Samsung is making it hard to
I don`t think there is anything wrong with the signal. even if I only have 1 bar the phone is perfect during calls and my LTE/4G download speed is even over the provided speed my carrier provides, I think it`s just a bug that it`s showing less signal then what it actualy has.

This is true. It's simply a bug that shows the wrong signal strength - mine shows -113 but I'll have 3 bars so that makes no sense. However, if you ARE getting a bad signal, that is a different issue altogether.
(btw I started a thread about this already several weeks back)
Spoke to Samsung on the phone, they didn't need to remote access my phone to see the issue. They had an S6 in their office and they told me they saw the signal at -113dBm just like mine. They say they have passed this onto the relevant team and hopefully it will be fixed in an OTA and I should stick to the United Kingdom BTU firmware (the correct firmware for my region).
We will see if this gets resolved. They definitely know about the problem now and have seen it with their own eyes, so I'm hopeful.

Ok.. Thanks... I already read through that thread too... Been trying to figure out if it was just me or alot of people..... Seems like the 920f is getting more updates that us.... 920I......The latest is AOD3 right? Today I'm gonna flash a custom rom for 920f and see if there is any change....
*edit* just checked Samsung live update... AOE3 was just released for 920I for TTT I guess is a country called Trinidad and Tobago... But that is the firmware I've been using.... Hopefully this will help... Let Ya guys know
*edit #2*...ok guys just updated to AOE3.... Bars still show low but the signal status is working and it's showing that I have a better signal than with *#0011*... The - dbm and asu is now extremely close to my S5... So in conclusion the signal is strong it just doesn't show it in the bars like previous Galaxy's

Bad Cell Signal

I've had the note 5 for a little over a month now, and the only thing I hate about it is the terrible cellular signal. Even if the phone is showing 4 bars of LTE I still have really poor signal. I'm on the Sprint Note 5 obviously, rooted and running Moar Rom Version 1.2. Is anyone else having poor signal? Does anyone know how to change the PRL, or if its even possible?? Is there anyhting I can do? Maybe get a new phone, lol!!
My service has been better actually. Of course I'm coming from an s3 too.
I have horrible signal to especially indoors, it drop to 3g with 1 bar

OnePlus One fully stock - T-Mobile - no signal/carrier connection 52% of the time

My OnePlus One is on latest cyanogen 12.1, completely stock and unrooted. I am noticing high battery drain on cell stand by (42%)
and of that 52% of the time there is no connection to carrier.
Is there a fix for this issue? My wife's Note Edge (SM-N915G on stock KitKat) has no signal issues with T-Mobile. but my OnePlus One show no connection most of the time. Is this a CM12.1 issue or is this a known issue with OPO and T-Mobile combination?
Appreciate the help.
Which baseband?
This could just be because of where you're located. The OPO only supports one of T-Mobile's LTE bands, band 4, while the Galaxy Note Edge supports all three, including band 12, which has much greater range and building penetration.
All of the recent T-Mobile commercials touting improved coverage area and better building penetration are based off of using band 12 on their newer devices which support VOLTE (voice over LTE). All of their new towers incorporate this band in areas that previously had little or no coverage (especially rural and suburban).
If you're in an outlying area with poor band 4 coverage your handset will be constantly trying to lock in on the weak signal and shifting from 3G, 4G, and LTE. Doing this also greatly reduces data transmission speed and reduces battery life.
If you're in an urban area with strong signal acquisition, then forget what I just said, you have another issue.
Hope this helps.
i used OPO on tmobile and it worked fine, depends on many factors including location, time of day and of course the bands used by the device.

I see from your profile that you reside in the UK. The OP doesn't list his, so I'm operating under the assumption that he's here in the states. My observations and comments in the post above yours, are strictly based on what I know about this device and with T-Mobile USA, as I'm unfamiliar with its operations in other countries.

Apologies, should have included location detail. This OPO is in Austin, tx so its metro area.
Baseband: DI.3.0c6-00241-m8974aaaaanazm-1
Cynogen version: 12.1.1-YOG7DAS2K1
Kernel version: 3.4.67-cyanogenmod-g9220ae3
Build: LMY48Y
Will I get better luck on AT&T with OPO?

You might, but I can't say for sure. The OPO supports 2 of the 3 bands AT&T utilizes, band 4 (like T-Mobile) and band 17. So you have more of a chance. Bear in mind, that AT&T is considerably more expensive than T-Mobile and that they have roaming agreements with each other, where if you can't get any signal for telephony you'll roam off the other's network.
Generally speaking AT&T has more coverage, because it's an older more mature company with a more established infrastructure. T-Mobile is more of an upstart, but is rapidly expanding with a newer technology. Like I said in the previous post, explaining why your wife's Note got so much better reception, newer T-Mobile devices which support all 3 LTE bands (2,4, & 12) get better reception and probably twice the coverage than what is possible with the OPO.
I hope this helps explains things.

yes i do reside in the UK but bought my OPO in the US when i lived there back in 2013 and used it on Tmob. according to the website it works in the UK on Three and EE(tmobile/ orange). i use it on three and get 4g and 3g with no probs. i do like the tmobile usa plan of $40 unlimited all
Since stock 12.1 update, I've noticed mobile network keeps dropping and in return draining the battery quickly.
Thinking it's the update, I've installed custom 12.1 ROM, but the problem persisted.
With further searching, I've found fix here.

Scroll down to LTE issues and try the method described. Just note that it suggest deleting other APN, but I recommend against it because it can interfere with roaming.

Since stock 12.1 update, I've noticed mobile network keeps dropping and in return draining the battery quickly.
Thinking it's the update, I've installed custom 12.1 ROM, but the problem persisted.
With further searching, I've found fix here.
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/cos-12-1-non-rooted-user-w-mobile-connectivity-issues.361244/
Goto APN settings, take note of current APN's.
Reset to defaults.
Copy previous APN values to currently selected APN.
Save then reboot phone.

Thanks, so I am not the only one experiencing network connectivity issues. I do suspect this software related to some extent. Will try the fix and report back.

All phones can now get WiFi calling. Just download digits and sync it. Download it on your main driver and sync it. You can use the DIGITS to call using WiFi from any device using your number.

Issue with latest t mobile update and signal

Hey guys, I did the update for the t mobile version the day it dropped a couple days ago. Since I have constantly loss signal (normally in my house, I get 5 bars and insane speeds) now randomly stuff doesn't load, and I get x on my signal bars. Or it drops to 4G. I have reset network connections, called t mobile and they recommend a replacement but it started with an update has anyone else had these issues? NOTE I'm basically a 2 min walk from the 5G tower here and always normally got full 5G bars.

I'm surprised T-Mobile suggested a replacement out of the gate.
Have you tried a total factory reset (w/o using any backup to restore data/apps) & /or a new SIM Card.
Will either of those actions solve the problem is anyone's guess, but, if T-Mobile is offering a (new) replacement, I'd take them up on their offer.

We did all of it except a Sim replacement. So I'm debating on switching to a g s20
after taking the ota, did you do a cache wipe inside recovery? I usually do this for performance and house cleaning.

Do you have stock recovery or TWRP recovery?
I would msm back to stock and see if that fixes the issue. Take the update again and if it continues, bad device and time to swap it out
I get super weak signal too but I have the Unlocked International version ??*. Says 5G, but never is actually connected to 5G. My 8 Pro didn't have the issue
I've got same issues here, signal randomly drops out at home. Using TMobile sim, signal was always rock solid on my OnePlus 7 pro. I had same issues in TMobile software and international software. I backed up modem just in case but I get 5g on international rom. Did any of you fix the signal drop issues?
