USB C Adapter / Hubs [HDMI/DP/VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, PD, SD/TF Card] - Sony Xperia 1 Accessories

Hey guys, I'm trying to set up a collection of knowledge about USB C Hubs for the Xperia 1.
Has anyone tested those yet? I want to expand this thread as more information is gathered.
Ethernet and USB Cameras don't seem to be supported at all.
So far i tested these ones.

I've used Dell Universal Dock - D6000, it mirrors the screen and charges at the same time, using the DisplayLink Desktop (Demo) App and SecondScreen to adjust the resolution, I had a few suggestions for SecondScreen such as checking the resolution after connection and creating a new profile at connection time and then being able to re-map the profile if you accidentally connect in portrait instead of landscape, but so far no reply.
Ethernet doesn't work.
Video and audio works well, but the DRM prevented me using it to watch Netflix on a TV in a hotel room whilst on a work trip, the movie or show video isn't played, but the rest of the GUI is displayed including preview videos with audio. Strangely it works fine on PC on the same Dock, shrug, I'd figure that's where you would rip the video if you were going to. I guess it's OK though as the ChromeCast doesn't have the same DRM concerns, so I should just buy one of those perhaps. (unless someone could fix this ).

The new xperia 1 model supports Internet via ethernet its confirmed by SONY themselves.

Damn that's ridiculous. The normal xperia 1 sold for over 1000$ and now they introduce the Sony Xperia 1 Professional Edition with ethernet. Thats only a few drivers added to the kernel. Other smartphones for 150$ can do that, but sony has to be special about it.

Sony Xperia 1 support Ethernet with ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C dock: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500180

Out of curiosity, i tested my old adapter again. For some reason it is working now, Sony probably added more drivers in a later update.

USB Devices I've Tried

The gtablet has a USB host port so I was curious what might be supported by the base kernel. Here is what I've tried so far. Please add your devices to the thread.
- Logitech USB keyboard
- 16Gb USB flash drive
- 100Gb USB hard drive
iPod works
My 30G iPod works when disk use is enabled.
Also working:
Dell USB keyboard
Sandisk 2G flash drive
ATP USB SD card reader
has anyone tried connecting a USB hub and multiple devices?
Wont work (sadly)
Canon 40d
Although at first I was all excited when the camera said "busy"
Sandisk drives will work IF you have removed the U3 crap off of it
Aaron
Jutauser...what brand and model of external hard drive did you use? I'm decided on whether I should get a larger microSD or just use an external USB HD
I'm on on Vegan beta 3-
Working
-Droid 1 SD card- it charges it too.
-SIIG JK-US0312-S1 Black USB Mini Multimedia Keyboard- I just bought for my gTab
not working
-new apple USB keyboard
-Logitech USB headset with mic- was hoping for Skype
My USB mouse works on the VEGAn build, but not on the Tnt Build (not even the new one, sadly).
I have a USB splitter cable coming from HK, in the next few weeks - want to see if I can split off to use both a USB keyboard and mouse on VEGAn.
Logitech trackball (mouse) model unknown due to missed sticker works great on Vegan rom!

I just tried connecting my monitor (which is basically a 2 port + card reader powered usb hub) to the gtab and got mouse and keyboard to work simultaneously.
Working:
Logitech G9 mouse
Logitech G5 mouse
Logitech G15 keyboard
Some HP compact mouse
Not working:
Canon 7D
Anyone tried a non-powered USB hub? Also anyone know if you can map the right mouse button? Would make ScummVM more awesome than it already is.
I just tried a wireless lite touch keybord and it works perfect!!
Vegan-Tab b3
Also a regular usb memory works.

[Q] Can the XOOM act as a USB Host?

Hi, can anyone who owns a XOOM pls let me know if you can plug in:
1) a USB flash drive to the XOOM, and view and open files on the drive?
2) an external hard drive and view and access files from your XOOM
Many thanks

Does the Xoom have a USB port? Pretty sure it only has MicroUSB. I guess they do have microusb flash drives not that I look.
Hi. Yup its only got micro USB, but I guess you could use the included adapter cable to plug in a flash drive.... we don't have the XOOM here yet, but the functionality of being able to connect a flash drive, move files e.g. PDF or .doc and then view them is important to me.

As of today what you want is not avab. The cable it comes with doesn't take input. They do have a cable online that will do this one day, but doesn't do it yet.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
The cable that Motorola "will" be selling is a micro-usb to standard usb (female) adapter. I'll look around for the sources, but I know that I saw this detailed in a few videos from Motorola techs and at least one reviewer site.
The cable is not just a straight conversion of form factor, but has the necessary pinout to instruct the Xoom to jump into usb host mode. From the reports that I saw, it would absolutely provide the ability to plug usb drives, cameras and other accessories into the xoom for direct access. In fact, the reviewer that I saw, made a comment that they had verified the functionality by plugging in a couple usb keyboards... supposedly worked like a champ.
Lame that we need a "special" adapter, but I can imagine that if it is just a pinout issue, it may be possible for the good folks here at XDA to craft a software solution that would allow us to bypass the motorola-branded cable... It would have been WAY cooler if it was a standard usb port, like some of the other tablets on the horizon.
Thanks. They mention in many reviews and I think Google mentioned it too that you can attach a mouse or keyboard by cable (I know about Bluetooth) which suggests that it should support input, so is it just a hardware interface thing or an actual firmware OS/software issue?
Edit: thanks for the great response gigglebox.... we posted simultaneously
Is this it?

Visually, yeah. Looks like they took it off their site for some reason. In fact the only times that I saw this on Moto's site, was in the day or 2 leading up to the launch... when typing in xoom into the search bar on their landing page, it would spit out a drop-down menu listing the Camera Connection Kit (by name and pic).
I dont like the fact that they call it a "camera connection", but they werent pulling any punches about it serving as a host. They did note that the external storage (thumbdrives, etc) were not yet supported, but that they would be. The cameras and (according to them) keyboards were working now.
I believe it is possible but right now it is a software limitation.

Agreed, the engineer from moto definitely says the hardware should accept any usb 2.0 or higher device, but it's a software issue. Toshiba have a straight usb and a micro usb port on their device so hopefully they're working on this.
We don't have the XOOM here yet, but hopefully by the time it becomes available (approx April) we might have the option of the Toshiba as well.
I use this USB host cable and it works great. Have tested it with my 750gb Oyen and 320gb WD Passport external HDD's, several usb flash drives (8-16gb), San disk USB memory card reader, and a USB keyboard.
For those having issues getting their Xoom to recognize USB storage devices here's what I've got and did to get it to work: I flashed my XOOM (3.1) to the 2.6.36.4 Tiamat_Xoom-v1.4.4-Full_Throttle Kernel and was unable to get the USBMount to recognize drives or storage at first. I installed USB Mass Storage Watcher from the market (it's free) and it works awesome! Can mount any storage I want (NTFS, FAT16/32, HFS, HFS+, EXT2, ETX3, EXT4) with any capacity. I think this app will work with any rooted Xoom (or other devices). Under my Kernel my USB host is located under/usbOTG.
Hope this helps.
FYI ... I've checked it and stock ROM Xoom without root is able to operate standard PC keyboard/mouse using basic one-to-one usb->microusb adapter (without any electronics onboard).
Probably with proper dual socket usb adapter (also without electronics onboard) it would be possible to connect both keyboard and mouse at once.

if you have a Logitech keyboard and mouse that connect by the unifying receiver,or mostly any keyboard+mouse combo that connects by one receiver, then only a standard OTG cable should work.

USB OTG?

Hi guys, should have my P8max tomorrow, was just wondering if any of you guys had tested USB OTG with it? If it can't do USB audio out then that's going to be a major problem for me (if it doesn't support it natively that's OK, providing an app like USB Audio Player PRO or Hiby Music Player works). Generally anything that has OTG support will work with those apps, so should be fine, but always nice to have confirmation - don't suppose anyone here has tested it out? Any other feedback about USB OTG welcome.
i tested internet via usb otg. It's not working bec. google has disabled usb otg on android 4.4 and higher. why? i don't know. it's stupid google decision.
internet via usb can be enabled but:
1. it's need root
2. it's always need wifi or fake wifi connection
3. stupid google
USB OTG drives work for me, the DACs I have also work, although they need USB Audio Player PRO or Hiby Music to function. Only phone I've tried with functional USB ethernet via OTG was the ASUS Padfone Infinity, and even there I suspect it only worked because the drivers were intended for use in tablet mode.

Confirmed ... USB OTG works for my P8 max...
Confirm Usb OTG working on DEV701-L europe.
I have connected a 1 Tb 2,5" external Hd and it worked perfectly.

Samsung Dex on all Samsung Phones that support Dex with no dock or HDMI

Hi i will show you all on how to use Dex on your Samsung phones that support Dex without any accessories.
All you need to do is make sure your rooted and use Es File Manager or FX File Manager to navigate to system(root)/system then edit the build.prop
ro.build.characteristics=phone change the phone to tablet
once you have changed that save it and reboot then go to settings and disable your lock screen has there is a bug where it just reboots your phone so you have to use a custom lock screen like Hi Locker that's the best one i have used.
once that is done scroll down your notifications and click the 3 dots then button order there you will have Samsung Dex just put it in your notifications and then click on it and then there you have it Samsung Dex working on your phone
You will notice some apps will act like there on a tablet here is the list of apps

CAMERA
if you have any problems message me on discord T0PGlitch3r#5273
This makes for inefficient use of the screen/phone. Just spend the $30 and get yourself a USB-C hub with video out and use Dex as it's meant to be used. When I am on the road, I patch it into the hotel tv. I carry a mini wireless keyboard and mouse. Boom. Laptop replacement w/o the bulk. No root required.
After Android 10, we can use DeX mode with USB type C only. Cheers
Thanks for the nice tip!
I Love dex mode.
This tip is good for TV Samsung with mirror screen.
It Is my case :fingers-crossed:
But, if anyone needs to use dex wireless with any TV Brand

Hello Leon. My Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro is about getting upgraded to Android 10 on September. Do you mean with that Android version you just need to plugin the USBC to USB standard and it will work? At the moment I connect it to my MacBook using Samsung Dex and it doesn’t recognise my tablet... [emoji20]

List of devices with video signal via usb.

Dear forum.
Android phones are great laptop replacement but requires a wired monitor signal for persistence. Wireless screencasting tend to lag or disconnect after a couple of hours usage with bluetooth keyboard/mouse interfering with wifi so for repeated work you need a wired monitor signal.
By setting screen width to 4-500pixels in settings/developer options and using utility apps such as taskbar pc-style, leena desktop or sentio your phone becomes a highly usable desktop computer if connected to any tv, projector or monitor with hdmi capacity. Add to this a phones superior microphone for commands and voice to text funtion in google dox. Trouble is to find a phone with verified video capacity over usb, there are several standards and lots of rumors so Im hoping we may create a reference list of known devices with known capacity of video over usb with the good help of you folks.
Main Technology standards:
The two main tech standards are MHL and Displayport. MHL was early available on sony, samsung, LG and more devices via microusb ver 2. Displayport has grown later years with Huawei/Samsung devices over usb c ver 3. The older MHL over usb ver2 have difficulties handling more than video and sound, some devices such as sony Z5 may charge battery slowly when connected on MHL to external usb power but no guarantees. MHL over usb ver 2 have no capacity for keyboard/mouse or ethernet via usb, these must be connected via bluetooth.
Later usb ver 3 standard have capacity of video, sound, power and data, these devices can be connected to a hub with hdmi, keyboard, mouse, ethernet and still charge battery. There is plenty more to add about technology but lets keep to most basic info and focus on a list of devices with video signal over usb as I have not been able finding a complete list anywhere.
- There is also extra hardware available such as Displaylink which requires an app and displaylink chipped hubs but there is little information available so hopefully someone chips in with better info and proof of concept.
- There is windows phones with hdmi capability but I dont dare to mention so please contribute.
- Apple phones may have hdmi capability but there seem to be much rumors and guesswork without exact knowledge so please chip in if you have knowledge on this part.
- Several names/words are used referencing the function of connecting phone to external monitor. Samsung referencing as "Dex", Huawei "desktop mode", windows continuum, wired screencast, MHL, displayport, hdmi over usb,
All help completing the list is higly appreciated, please see this list as a suggestion this far while being completed/updated, the aim is to have a complete reference list of computer capable devices using the collective knowledge in this forum.
