Google Dialer - Moto G7 Power Questions & Answers

Anybody know which Google dialer will work for our phone? I'm not sure why the messages and phone app aren't actual Google apps like they are on other Moto phones but I was really enjoying dark mode on the dialer and messages on other phones but every apk I download won't install.

Once i updated my dialler and contacts in the playstore, the dark option is there. Try changing contacts to dark mode and then the phone app.

The truth is I don't know which application you are talking about because the Moto G7 Power and and all Moto devices at least all G family have Android Pure with some Moto Functions added. Meaning that the dialer, Messages and many other apps are the Official Google apps and yes G7 Power. If you think they are not the OG ones just because a feature that is not even available yet, you need to understand that atm is only available in the Dialer and Messages Beta Apps. Go to Play Store look for the Apps and scroll a bit down and Join the Beta Program for each one.
PS.. I think that to this day, the feature/Option for "Dark Theme" is now available for most Google applications stable release.

For the phone/dialer you need the beta version, well at least in my case. Because I enabled Dark Mode on the Messages app but still no option on the dialer settings. I was like well whatever, then I went to the store to see if I was missing something and noticed I haven't joined the Beta Program for Google Dialer yet so I joined and in about a min it updated, and there wmit was the Dark Mode option. ?.

I don't have the phone anymore but if I recall, the messages app at least was not the stock Google one. It sure appeared exactly like it in appearance and function, yet if you went to the play store you could download the actual Google one completely separate and have 2 identical messaging apps except the Google one allowed the dark theme. I remember being confused by that because that was not me experience on other Moto phones which were using the actual Google apps.

Hmm maybe by that time wasn't fully implemented yet probably. But AFAIK all moto devices uses the Google apps since they started to ditch the SystemUI mods and started to use Android as is.

Could have sworn I had g dialer before update
Could have sworn I had the Google dialer before the latest security update, I know I had dark mode at least.
Now I don't. G7 Power from MetroPCS. I still have the Moto contacts and messages, but Google versions as well... And dark mode active in everything, but no dark mode dialer... Looks like it's the Moto dialer..?!
Am I losing my mind or what?

I have the MetroPCS variant as well, it comes with Moto Phone, Messager, and Contacts. I froze them, installed Google Dialer Framework in Magisk, and replaced them with the Google apps from the Play Store.

"Classic" dialpad for KitKat and Lollipop

I like to see good old dialpad on my phone screen when I'm about to make a call.
Unfortunately Google decided that calling on the phone using numpad is a secondary feature but fortunately I work in a company that employs few Android developers and they did a 2 minute side project for me. The result is an app that launches dialpad within the stock phone app so that I can replace the phone icon on my home screen with the one that takes me direct to good old phone interface. (icon is labeled "Call")
I have tested the app on my Nexus 5 with both Android version. 4.4.4 and 5.0 and it seems to work fine.
Probably I'm not the only one who misses the old phone interface but who would like to keep using the stock dialer app, so i decided to share what I got for fixing it

No, you are not the only one. I really hated it when I first tried KitKat and Lollipop, and the numpad / digits would not show right away. Thank you for sharing this with everyone, it works great on Lollipop. :good:
I believe this still exists in Marshmallow. Google should really make this an option in the default app. The current behavior does not work for everyone and not everyone will find your app (or even bother looking).
5.0, 5.01, 6.x confirmed!
So...months have gone by with this annoyance... I'm running CM13, Android M.. like the other guy said, I cannot believe this app hasn't gained more attention. I have found that some of this is due to the wording of the issue at hand...kept getting alternative dialer apps in my results....BLASPHEMY... So..yeah.. So everyone knows, this also works with not only the stock dialer, but Dialer for Hangouts as well as Skype.
Too bad I can only hit "THANKS" once...
Thank you.

Newbe
with no intention to hijack your great contriubtion:
there's an xposed module that does the same thing with native app>> show dialpad
where were you before i found out this one?!
i'm sure most of the people don't want to mess with xposed, like myself, and will appreciate the provided solution(s)....
:good:
A Little Added Information...
It works very well under Nougat also. :good: Use the back button to access the recent's list.
This works on Marshmallow, if someone's wondering.
Ran across this thread trying to find a solution for the same problem. Having had a look at the linked app, I realized it was just sending some kind of intent that caused the phone app to open to the dialpad. Long story short, the Tasker "Call" action (with no phone number specified) does the same thing, so if you have Tasker, you can just create a shortcut to a task with that one action.
Well done! Thank you!
I DLed, from Play Store, following the link in the OP.
No more favorites page, when opening dialer! If you do want the favorites page, just hit the back button after opening dialer.
After a reboot it still opens the dial pad!
Using on the Moto Dialer app on Moto Z2 Play.
GREAT! GREAT! GREAT!
Works on motor 4 on 7.1.1 thanks for this
Still works on Stock Nougat. Thanks.
Awesome! Thanks so much. Just what I was looking for! ??

Sense 7 apps on Lollipop Sense 6

Sense 7 has been out for some months already and one of its best features is theming capability. The Themes app is available on devices running Sense 6 on Lollipop, but most stock apps still follows the old theme system, which only has 4 themes.
Luckily, some of the Sense 7 apps can be installed on Sense 6 without root. Here are the ones I've tested on my M8Sx (single-SIM, WWE Asia). Some of these apps are available on APKMirror and the rest are extracted from Sense 7 ROMs or system dumps of the M8, M9, or A9. They can be uninstalled cleanly - if you can't uninstall them from Settings, try dragging them from the app drawer to the trash icon, or using an application manager.
Camera 7.30.581119 (23 Jul): Not much has changed apart from a few visual tweaks. The app seems to take photos a bit faster.
Contacts 7.0.502006: This also includes the dialler with white buttons.
HTC Mail 9.0.550299
FM Radio 7.0.549341 (26 Jun): Fixed problem with application header.
Calendar 7.01.591006 (6 Aug)
Tasks 7.1.658473 (17 Nov)
Sound Recorder 7.0.549341 (26 Jun): (Note: By default, recordings are stored in the phone's internal storage - if you've set it to Memory card before, you'll have to set it back again in the app.)
Clock Widget 7.50.628268 (21 Nov): Two new clock widgets are available - a THEMABLE transparent one and a solid one. This version is taken from the new A9's system dump.
Other widgets: Auto Rotate, Background Data, Bluetooth, Calendar, Contacts, Data Roaming, Data Controls, GPS, Hotspot, Mobile Network, Music, Power Controls, Profiles, Ringtones, Screen Brightness, Screen Timeout, Sync, Wi-Fi. I haven't got the time to test all of them, so please report if they don't work. Most of the widgets look the same - the only difference is that they now follow the new theme's colour scheme.
Two small apps: Archive Viewer 7.0.623146 and Make more space 4.0.552526 if you want even more consistency.
Personalise 7.1.631213: This app lets you download and apply fonts from the theme system of Sense 7. Tap "Font style" and then the plus icon to download fonts, but don't tap "Apply" - the app will tell you something is missing and try to download the font again. Instead, go back to the font list and select your font. Note: You won't be able to choose Sense 6 themes. Uninstall this version to get the old themes back.
Here are some images of the new apps: http://imgur.com/a/ZaI5u#0
In case you haven't noticed, some of the apps have square dots on the menu button and some have round dots. The ones with round dots are taken from MaximusHD ROM, based on Android 5.1. Perhaps on 5.1, Sense 7 will go with round dots like stock Android.

Most of these apps I've listed here are either not on the Play Store (such as Contacts, widgets, Mail, Calendar) or their latest versions are not compatible with the E8 (Camera, Tasks) so there is no need to check for updates.
To uninstall them, drag them from your app drawer to the uninstall icon on your home screen.
By the way, you should uninstall the Sense 7 Clock app (not the widget!). It's available on the Play Store and is compatible with the E8.
Thx for the apps. Would be great if You could extract and upload an sms app

I had a question regarding the themeable clock widget, is it totally themeable? Like even on the homescreen we'll be able to get different clock styles from the themes right? Did you check whether it's working properly or not?
Also, do the dialer and contacts app work properly? Without any crashes and bugs?
Thanks a lot btw.

The transparent clock is totally themeable, but the solid clock isn't and always looks like the default one on Sense 7. Take a look at the album I've posted and see for yourself.
I haven't got any problems with the contacts and dialler app, but my phone is single-SIM and I extracted that app from a single-SIM ROM so it may not work on dual-SIM phones. Luckily, it's easy to uninstall the app in case anything goes wrong. If the app doesn't work for you, try using the apk from BinDroid.

Have you tried the latest camera app update which came out 3-4 days back? Does it work with the E8 too? Any clue where I can get that apk if it works?
I tried contacting HTC about why the camera isn't available for E8 via playstore. They said it was an issue with Google and will take some time to fix.

It's on APKMirror. I edited my post yesterday to include the update. APKMirror has a Pushbullet channel to check for app updates, so if you've got Pushbullet you can receive notifications for them.

[Q] Impact of Themes and Google Now

Hello everybody!
I'm interested in buying the Mate 8 but still have a few question I weren't able to find answers to.
I currently own a Nexus 5 and like the clean look of stock Android.
First questions are in regards to themes.
1. Do they still apply when you change the launcher or this somehow linked to the EMUI stock launcher?
2. Can you change the dropdown menu (notifications and quick settings) with these themes, too, in order to make it more like stock Android? Screenshots of the dropdown menu are rarely given.
3. How easy is it to create themes by oneself?
All in all I'd like to have a clean stock look as especially these bubbles around the icons are a pain to my eyes.
I would prefer to NOT have to flash a custom ROM.
The second part of my questions is in regard to Google Now.
1. Do you have the Google Now cards available?
2. Is Google Now on Tap working?
I hope you guys can enlighten me
Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

1. Do they still apply when you change the launcher or this somehow linked to the EMUI stock launcher?
EMUI themes still apply when you change launchers. You can set your custom icons on the launcher desktop, but the themed icon will still appear in other places like the recent apps screen or in notifications. So you will still see ugly rounded square or circle boarder with your icons outside of your launcher desktop. Fortunately this can be solved by installing custom EMUI theme with stock icons, which you can find here: http://foerster.io/hack-huawei-enable-pure-icons-with-no-borders-backgrounds-etc/
2. Can you change the dropdown menu (notifications and quick settings) with these themes, too, in order to make it more like stock Android? Screenshots of the dropdown menu are rarely given.
Themes can change the dropdown menu to a certain extent, mostly changing the shortcut icons. I've yet to see any theme that can make the dropdown menu look completely stock, I don't think it's possible because they operate differently. To me the EMUI dropdown UI looked decent enough (albeit in a different style) so I don't mind it so much.
3. How easy is it to create themes by oneself?
Don't know, never tried it myself.
1. Do you have the Google Now cards available?
I have the international version of the phone (L29), most google services are pre-installed including google now cards. If you get the Chinese version you'll have to install google services yourself, which I heard is a fairly easy process.
2. Is Google Now on Tap working?
You can turn on the now on tap function in google cards settings, but it doesn't seem to work when I long press the home button.
Please note that I'm still on an early EMUI build (B103) and have not yet received any OTA, I don't know if later updates changes anything.
Overall I did get a fairly decent looking UI running on my mate 8. Some UI elements will remain in EMUI style (most notably recent apps and notification dropdown and settings screen) as you can't change those without a custom ROM or at least some root hack, but I don't mind those too much, in fact I liked some of the EMUI design. The worse part of EMUI 4.0 is the launcher and the forced icon background on 3rd party apps, but like I said earlier these can all be averted with 3rd party launcher and custom theme. If you're a diehard fans for the "stock-look" who won't accept any non-material design element then this may not be good enough for you, but it is good enough for me.
@beachletter
Thank you a million times, Sir!
So did I get this right and you also tried to achieve a more or less stock look?
If so, could you please provide screenshots of your dropdown menu and maybe of your homescreen?
Did you own a Nexus phone before the Mate 8, too?
Regarding the dropdown menu of notifications: if I understand it correctly it's more or less working like a timeline, not like on other phones. This can't be changed, can it? I guess I know the answer as themes are supposed to only change the look and not the way things work, but yeah...
This is what my ui looks like after getting custom launcher and material design icon theme.

I like stock icons and stock recent apps screen, but for notification and quick settings drop down I actually liked EMUI's implementation. I used CM and other near-stock rom in my previous phones.
See the post above for screenshots.
Alright, thanks again!
Now I have most of the information I can possibly get to make the right decision. Hopefully I will
Okay, so I've bought a Mate 8 to test things.
While it is really well designed, is nice to hold and snappy as well, I still can't get myself to like the software that much.
I have tried to apply the theme @beachletter provided but it somehow doesn't apply correctly and therefore many icons still have that bubble around it (e.g. Chrome, Play Store). Dialer and Contacts are still the same icons.
Regarding Google Now on Tap: this functionality was added with B152 firmware update which immediately showed up while setting up the device.
Additionally I have to say that the horizontal scrolling in the recent apps menu is even more unintuitive than I've thought it would be.

That's strange, on my phone the dialer and contacts have separate icons (although I usually don't use contacts because I can quick dial any name in dialer to search my contact list) , and I don't see any icon background/border for chrome or play store.
Maybe you should check out the newest version of the theme here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/rooting-roms/hack-enable-pure-icons-borders-t3315731
and FYI the launcher I use is NOVA Prime
Good to know google now is back in B152. Unfortunately my phone doesn't get any OTA update above B103 yet. But at least there's no camera focusing issue on my phone, even with B103.

Actually I just switched to this theme which seems to have a more comprehensive set of material design icons:

You may want to give it a try.

What are your default apps?

Never seen a post like this before, so I thought I'd start one off.
What do you use as your default apps (from the default apps section in Settings > Apps). I'll start:
Browser: Chrome
Calling app: Google Dialer
Messaging app: Google Messages
Home screen: Pixel Launcher
Device assistant app: Google Assistant
Other honorable mentions:
Keyboard: GBoard
Contacts: Google Contacts
As you can tell I probably wish I had a Pixel instead
What are you all using?

No one I know uses Duo unfortunately. Everyone has iPhones which sucks for me. I was using Allo with my brother, but it made more sense to use WhatsApp instead.
But yeah I've replaced pretty much all stock apps with the Google equivalent where possible.

I see. Allo is a good app to be honest. If they will allow SMS for Allo I will use it instead of G Messages right away.
Me too, hate the S8 Default apps.

Yeah I really don't understand why Google don't have one app that will do both to be honest. One thing I really liked about iPhone was how good it was to have one messaging app for all purposes. Strange that Google just can't seem to get it right.
Not to get off topic here but how did you folks get the google dialer to play nice with your GS8. I've tried a couple of things suggested in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-google-dialer-t3557412 but seems like no matter what i do Google Dialer will open to a message about my device being unsupported.
Thanks

Google I/O just listed today's Q beta will be available to Essential phones

I noticed their website has a Fastboot file and an OTA file. Will the OTA still require wiping my device or will it install over the top of the May 2019 update?

No just downloaded and sideloaded OTA and it updates without wipe. The only new features I don't see implemented is the new gesture system, it is still using pill style from Android P.
And this which is odd to me.

I saw it on Telegram first. I believe @63c posted something about it. I had read an article a few months back that said Pixel's would be getting beta this way but super surprised to see mata firmware on the Play Store. It's really bizarre to me but I guess it makes perfect sense when you consider how hard Google tries to be like ?

Anyone's check VoLTE after flashing 10.0 ??
No volte for me, (f*ck!)
just a note, cts is broken in q beta. you wont be able to use any safetynet apps like google pay or pokemon go or some banking apps.
It's here but not the most stable. Some apps and games don't work. Pixel Launcher crashes in startup, a few launchers I've tried don't work at the moment.
Working fine here. No app problems or crashes yet (but I'm only a few hours in).
My thoughts:
"Full gestural navigation" is difficult to use. The pill is too small to grab, and it makes app switching difficult.
Sometimes the nav bar comes back when full gesture is on (in the keyboard, for example). Pressing the back button will click on both the back button *and* whatever was behind it (an app in the launcher, for example)
2-button navigation (like Pie) works as it always has.
The app switcher draws below third-party launchers like Nova and Action Launcher. After about 1 second, the launcher disappears and the app switcher is accessible. Makes for a very buggy experience. I assume this is to allow launchers to perform an animation during the transition, which simply isn't implemented yet.
Dismissing notifications can only be done by swiping right now. Swiping left sets the preferences for notifications from that app.
How do you enable full-screen navigation? I am not seeing that option under settings.

Just wanted to mention, you don't have to initiate the gesture from the pill, whether you're swiping up to go home or swiping right to switch apps, you can do it from anywhere on the "navbar" for lack of a better term.
Edit: For the full gesture system.
Can anyone say how long it took from downloading the Essential Q App to actually receiving the OTA upgrade to 10 beta3

I opted in via the beta app before I went to see a movie, when I came out I had OTA notification, so within 2-3 hours. Some stuff pretty broken, so I would only recommend using if you're a developer or don't need this phone as daily driver.
Waiting

This is a second phone for me and when I saw the new beta 3 phone list I turned it on and downloaded the app., approximately 9am Eastern. I hadn't used the phone in 3-4 months so there was a waiting notice to upgrade to the lastest Android 9 security patch. I hoped it would ignore it and go on to Q but of course no luck. The security update ran ok but no Q so far?? Don't have a sim in it presently, hope that doesn't stop the Q update over Wifi.

Anyone tried Key, Chase or Citi banking apps?
FYI I had several apps crashing: Gmail, Outlook, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Shopping.
The fix was mentioned on Reddit but if you have opted into the beta for the Android System Webview you need to opt out of its beta in the Play Store, then disable and reenable Android System Webview.
So any apps that rely on Webview can probably be fixed that way

So if you never were in the beta of Webview you should be fine?
