Huge thx to rocker00 and Cirra92. We worked on this for weeks, it was an adventure starting from scratch trying to reverse engineer this what Xiaomi did. A lot of frustration, hours of testing and comparing and finally getting to this point that for me, us, we have the sound that we want.
I am a huge fan of 'what you hear is what you get ' recordings. This has been done with the changes... BUT ... read below for further technical information and limitations.
Also to be precise, Xiaomi messed up the left and right microphone. Easily tested in recordings and a headphones, so that was changed in the config files.
As I already wrote in the other (original) topic, AGC can be a good thing. AGC stands for automatic gain control which makes all the sounds sound at the same level.
Most people will like that you hear birds in the background really well and that conversations will always be at the 'good' level. Now our human ear can hear the slightest noise and still cope with loud things. Our brain adjusts the volume in a sort of way. If you technically translate the difference in sound levels this means an unbelievable dynamic range. Now some of us remember a VU-meter and that ideally peaks will go to 0dB to avoid distortion and get the best signal to noise ratio. AGC normally regulates this ... but due to the huge levels in our environments it is almost technically impossible to always do this. There is always a technical limit. You can look at it like HDR, it can be fantastic but useless in a complete dark environment were the sensor doesn't get light or gets way to much light.
AGC is switched off in the modded files so what you hear in dynamics is what your ears hear . BUT!!!! there is the technical limit of 0dB and the opposite side of the scale which is almost silence. The goal is to keep within these two and to aim at the 0dB. That setting can easily be controlled by DEC1 and DEC2 levels in the files which are easily modifiable.
There is another technical thing which you cannot control and which are the microphones themselves. They might have a hardware limitation to how loud they might record without distortion. Even in a professional environment microphones have limits.
The microphones that we have in our devices are really excellent and the difference between original and modded is day and night, no magnifying glasses or angel dust needed to hear it with headphones.
To bad Android hasn't got a recording mixer to set the level like the playback mixer. For the moment I found 1 application which can change the level and which is called Footej camera. It also has a VU meter which is a must, especially in loud environments.
So people give it a go and please provide feedback. Without positive or negative feedback there is no progress.

Thanks for this module. But I wonder, why no one has noticed the rubbish quality xiaomi has implemented in the camcorder video recording. Don't know if it's only with the Indian variant or others too.
The issue is that the quality is very bad even at 20mbps bit rate. The video has artefacts all over. I also own a Samsung galaxy note 3. Quite old device but with a great camera. Although note 5 Pro still camera beats it's old sensor, but videos come out great on my oldy Galaxy note 3.
Another biggest bug is that the continuous auto focus in camcorder works like in photo mode. Quick auto focus ruining all the video. I am talking about the lack of smooth continuous auto focus. The lens focuses back and forth quickly instead of slow smooth focusing. This ruins the whole quality and is quite irritating. I have tried many camera apps but the same bug. That means it's in the libs and nobody seems to notice it. The dynamic range is also very poor.
Such a great sensor, crippled by xiaomi's bad software. Can you guys fix it? It will make this already great camera greater. Thanks.
All the videos I took with this phone were ruined because of this issue .. I'm surprised to know there were minds working on it in the background.
I've never edited the build.prop on the vendor folder so I was digging through the lines in the /system version at first before double checking your note.
I've tested before and after the mod and I can confirm this is working with Pie pr1..

Normally the volume should be the same. One way to easily tell is to export the file to your pc (if it is a windows one) and use this meter during playback.(VLC player or so) http://www.vuplayer.com/other.php
If you play the file it shows the left and right output from the file to the amplifier (end stage) of the pc. Should show about the same values at once.

i made a test with both mics the inferior and superior (superior is beside IR)
1.-without the module the inferior mic sound is the left ear, and superior mic is the right
2.- with the module installed, ocurs a inversion of mic, the inferior mic is the right ear, and the superior is the left ear
i'm going to faculty, and don't have time to test with vumeter right now bro, sorry
when i back from the faculty i will check with vu meter

The mod changes left and right modules since they are wrong in the roms. Might be that a case is messing up the levels in recordings. Try without I would say.
If not fixed it might be your phone itself. We tried on 3 phones here (mine, rocker00 and Cirra92) and all were good. Quality of left and right mic should be the same ... so if volumes are not equal then you might need to change the DEC1 or DEC2 value, we'll say the correct location where they are if it doesn't work for you.

@fed_xD NOOOOOOWAAAAAAAY , this part exactly you can ask luksan how much time i spent on fixing it! the top microphone was the main one from Xiaomi's genius engineers..lol!! but i think those bugs are intended..this is how to run the business! i tested this module on MIUI 9.5.19.0 and Masik 2.3 and it's bug free, so again noway especially in this part

Not really audio related and haven't really played with video yet. I was about to ask to put a small clip on Youtube but they compress video so I would not see the issue.
The global version also has different cam modules.
Thinking as I type:
EIS : crops picture and uses sensors to define shakiness. Could cause less sharp images. Try without anti-shake to determine that issue.
Default video bitrate : 20mbit/s. Could be too little for a real time simple encoder. Check with green grass, like a football (soccer) field, and pan the video. If low bitrate grass will be like blocks and not sharp. Solution would be simple and even trying H.265 in Aranova's gcam (developer settings and activate) might fix that. 13.3mbit/s but H.265
Dynamic range. I have a S7 which is worse I think. Taking pictures sometimes clouds not visible in the sky while my whyred (lets call it that way) shows everything. Might be because of the Sony sensor in your devices. Use of Masik rom. which has HDR recording might mask this issue.
The fast AF, yes it can be an issue but I guess it is a compromise for taking pictures fast. People love a fast camera ... mm Masik rom also has object tracking.

I noticed the same too.I'm in miui ROM and the other person has difficulty in hearing my voice.So ,even though this fixes video problem,but it creates another problem

Edit: You are right guys, looks like i didn't test the call in a proper way since i was focus on the camera but i've found a quick fix for this issue , now the mics adjustments are on the path which is being used by camcorder only without touching the calls, tested with 2 calls and camcorder audio quality is the same

I have my own miui camera v2 port and I've added your fix in it. It's working good on LineageOS. The background noise has a really big difference. In few days I'll back home and so will share the module with also your fix if you are OK with that. I've already put link to this thread in the module and will add also in the post.
Thanks for the share, I'll just suggest you to use a unique name for the module in module.prop (see the one I've posted previously) to avoid problems with other modules.
In your new one you changed only mixer_paths.xml right?

Dear all,
I did the most silly thing I've ever done in my life with trying to reset my transformer by setting a pin in the... microphone entry. I've had to many wmobile phones and I hadn't read the manual.
Hopefully I didn't push like a donkey and the microphone is still working.
But I'm quite a paranoid and I'd like to check if my microphone has been damaged because now that I'm paying attention to its quality, I noticed that the sss sounds look more like "sh" sounds.
Could someone please kindly upload a microphone sample with some speaking with some "sss" in order for me to compare?

Yours has a kind of background whirring noise to it, don't know if thats a pc fan in the background or the mic broken, but mine isnt like that.
And you also sound very quiet, but you may just be further away from your device than I was from mine when I tested it.
I couldnt find where the default recording app saved the files so I used an app called PCM recorder to record it at 48000Hz. Whatever app you used to record your clip, created it in a very poor audio quality. It has a kind of 'underwater' sound quality, which is common with low bitrate recordings.
Oh and you'll have to take my word for it as I'm not posting an audio clip.

Find AudioNormalCodec
the options are:
0 - Default : GSM-AMR-NB 8000Hz 1ch (this is the default but has lots of high pitched noises in the background)
1 - MPEG4 AAC 16000Hz 1ch (this so far is the cleanest audio that I found you can get during video recording)
2 - Qualcomm QCELP 1000Hz 2ch (this is the MMS setting, not good at all for video recording)
I have found this solution, but i can't find "AudioNormalCodec" in my Omnia II...
if you can, pls let me know.

not so sure about that to be honest, recorded at a gig last night with latest revolution hd 4.1.4 rom and the sound was horrible
really would appreciate it if someone knows or could find a way to take the recording volume down a notch or two

Surely there must be an app or developer out there who knows how to fix this mess. Again, another event recording ruined. The htc sensation is fine for unamplified natural voices, but even speech or music at LOW volume is pingy, distorted and generally sux.
The Chic Corea concert I recorded was a total disaster. unticking stereo still not effective. Why does iphone make great recordings, but htc can't get it together? or is this an android issue in general? Don't get me wrong... love android and open source, but really... someone needs to nail this one. Is there any point in complaining to htc? ♥

Natural voices are ok, but this makes two concert video recordings ruined using my htc sensation. the sound is distorted pingy and beyond painful to listen to. Can't some brilliant developer create an app or fix for this? Is there any point complaining to htc, or are they too busy getting out their latest phone?
Sux that iphone video recordings. Natural voice and music is ok, but anything amplified, even at a moderate level, is ping-distortion city. and turning off stereo setting doesn't help much either. Thanks for the whine, now the cheese.
done some digging and i think, from what i read, android wasn't given a facility to lower recording volume. so i guess that plus a highly sensitive mic equals crappy sound recording with no fix, for the time being hopefully
I don't think it has to do with Android. I remember at some point on my Vibrant I was able to change the setting and got much better sound after. It may have been a DSP manager app I did it through or it could have been a setting when I was using CM7. Either way, I'm almost positive there is a way to adjust it.

I agree. This is one of the weakest points of the sensation. We have great video capture - but the sound can totally ruin the experience. If a Dev could figure this out it would be golden!
I am not sure about this, just a quick thought. But MAYBE the noise comes from the mics on the back of the sensation? Maybe HTC didn't thought about turning off the those mic's while recording.

I believe the stereo recording uses the 2nd mic above the camera, while mono just uses the standard mic, that we make calls with. I did some tests just by covering the mic holes while recording.
I just think it would be great if we could have a DEV take a look at how to lower the mic gain.
There is a thread over in the HD2 forums, that deals with edits to some lib files for mic gain, but I don't know if that would be something to take a look at. Here is the thread:

I think the problem is that there is no normal codec for audio coding. Oddly Andoid revolution HD writes with a frequency of 44,100 Hz, but the quality is very poor, although an order of magnitude better than in HyperSensation. Unfortunaly, developer chamber is at the bottom, and understandably so - because enough other bugs.
Just wanted to check in on this old thread and see if this is all still in issue with the Sensation and the latest ICS Roms? Wondering if HTC has fixed the high mic gain by now?

This is the problem I'm having with my pixel's audio. It happens with headphones and external. Videos I play, become distorted in intervals. An echo and overall broken barely understandable audio. Some fixes I tried are installing audio control apps. Maybe a kernel is what I need or magisk. I what to know the best route before I do to much back peddling. Thanks

magisk (itself) wouldn't have any effect on audio at all... sometimes apps are badly written and don't use audio APIs correctly, which can cause glitches... I have a patch in my kernel that makes sure even stupid apps end up setting the correct sample rate and sample size... if it's happening in intervals, it sounds like there may be something on your system (an app?) that is interrupting audio and you might be getting buffer underruns (the odd glitch or popping sound?)...
it also could be that u have a hardware issue. hard to say, without hearing / seeing what u are talking about... you could try my kernel and see if it helps.... sometimes audio apps help, but mileage varies... and if it's a hardware problem they won't fix it, maybe just reduce it. (not saying u have that issue, no idea).
I'm not sure what you mean by distorted though? like the gain is too high, or does it sound grainy and like the sound is 'pulling apart'? ... what app are u playing videos in, where sound becomes glitchy?

Some other thread was talking about hardware fixing pixels audio cheapness. But I have a lack of tools and experience with that. Maybe have someone do that for me in the end. They were changing headphone jacks and even motherboard components. The distortion is like the sound of slow motion audio, bassy, and obvious echo. Then also fine at the beginning of a video and half the rest of the time. In YouTube, boat browser so far. I shall try kernel first.

I'm not really following what you are saying about the deeper access algorithm or that being akin to any sort of kernel related audio tweak....afaik, those audio mods are just causing more buffering, which reduces the chance of buffer underruns. Stuff done in the kernel would be entirely different. not similar at all...
"sound of slow motion audio" ~ grainy then? like it's pulling apart, as I asked? ... it could be a hardware issue, it could be a software issue. Hard to say.
My description is some jibberish I know. I'm not intune with how some kernels, flash files, magisk modules exactly modify my device. I know to consult those threads for their ops and discussions. I made this thread to find answers for this problem.

Same issue has been seen while recording videos in Instagram, Snapchat & other XYZ applications .

Both links report "Album is empty". Try uploading the files to some other sharing site (and make sure they're set so that anyone can download them - no passwords).
I'd like to add to this because this is the exact issue I've noticed on 4 separate devices at this point. It would be great to have some more people confirm whether or not it is an issue for them. Especially when I still have a week to exchange mine. I've posted this in a few places without much of a response from anyone:
I picked up a regular Pixel 2 phone a couple of days ago to finally retire my old Nexus 4. Incredible phone so far except for one glaring issue. It appears that anything recorded with the top microphone (using the Camera app, Snapchat, etc) is very quiet. If I hold my phone 1ft away from my face, I can barely hear myself at half volume. With headphones, if I use the recommended headphone volume (around a quarter volume) I can barely hear anything from a camera app recording done at a regular speaking volume. Regular calls are fine. Speakers/Headphones play everything else at expected levels. When I turn my volume to max volume, there's no distortion or clipping. Some of my friends have confirmed that recordings/snaps from me are very quiet on their phones. I would say it's roughly 2x-3x quieter than other phones I've used. It seems like there's an issue with microphone gain? No case blocking the mic. Sometimes, it seems like my mic improves but only for a few minute or two and I can't reproduce this on demand. I thought changing orientation in the camera seemed to trigger it once but subsequently it didn't work.
If I use the app Easy Voice Recorder with Main (bottom) microphone selected, everything seems to be a much better volume (still not as loud as some other phones). As soon as I select Rear (which appears to be the top mic used in other apps) it's significantly quieter, just like in the camera app.
I had a friend send me a recording from his Pixel 2 with the same issue. Both phones are up to date with 8.1 (February 5th patch). I have also tried a factory reset and safe reboot. I'm hesitant to bring my new phone into my carrier for an exchange based on this, it sounds like it might be a software bug rather than hardware. I've also met with co-workers who seem to have the same issue.. I'm aware from google searches that people have had recording volume issues with Pixel 2 XL but nobody has said anything about the regular Pixel 2.
Today I flashed back to 8.0. It also has this issue. I'm hoping to hear from some people with regular Pixel 2 phones on whether or not they have noticed a low recording volume in the camera app. I'm still in the window to exchange my phone, so I'll probably do that if I get some responses that lead me to believe it's a faulty hardware issue, but I'm not convinced at this point just because of the several phones I've witnessed with the same issue.
Even if you don't have this problem with your regular Pixel 2 phone I would love to get a response from you. Be sure to post what android version / patch you're using. Thanks!
No issues here since day one. I've had the October, November, and December updates. Recordings all sound loud and clear.

Which November do you mean? 2018?
I'm on February patch and the audio is clearly way too low. I took measurement comparisons with a Moto X Play and the Pixel performed 9dB below the the Motorola device. This is the difference for a single channel only because for whatever reason Google did not enable stereo recording although the device is equipped with 2 microphones. I don't know what you expect from a 800€ device but I find that anachronistic.
If you take the 2 channels on the Moto you will end up at 12dB lower audio.
2017, sorry you still have the issue. Try blowing out the mics or get it replaced.
Was there ever a fix for this issue? I just noticed this while doing some recording with an external mic. I don't notice it without the mic, and I don't have a problem with this external mic attached to other cameras.
Is there a fix for this yet?
My Pixel 2 still has this issue, very frustrating. The sound volume on the videos I record with it is very very low.

If you have a rooted phone there is some mods you can do directly, if not you can boost mic sensitivity using a third-party app in the play store.
But mic is loud on all my videos so it might be hardware or software related. If you post a video talking I can try to post one from mine for comparison
For music, this is normal. But when you watch a video with a lot of speech, it is very difficult to listen to such a sound. The voices have a lot of low frequencies. Mid frequencies are hard to distinguish. Any noise is cut between words!
In headphones, the first time you connect, the sound is exactly the same. But in the settings, you can switch from Huawei Histen Auto to Huawei Histen Natural. And the sound becomes normal.
But this cannot be done for speakers. Huawei Histen Auto is there forever.
Question: Can something be done about this? For example, disable with ADB?

I think I found it,
uninstalling "com.huawei.imedia.sws" via adb and then rebooting seems to fix it
(hope it's not a placebo effect )
Got uninstallable packages from https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/debloater-huawei-matepad-11-2021.4475143/
And found the specific one by searching for "Histen adb uninstall"

I disabled it a long time ago. It seems nothing has changed - probably, it is only for headphones.

I didn't disabled it, I fully uninstalled it.
The settings isn't even available in the settings app.
I tried listening back to some bits of the first Ant-Man movie where I wasn't able to hear anything, now it's clearly audible and intelligible.
With it fully uninstalled I can hear every bg noises and whispers.
I'm pretty confident in the fact that it worked.
The sound clearly lost some quality but having the full range of sounds is better imo.

There are probably better examples, but so far I've only found these.
When the voice is sharper, the effect is stronger. And most noticeable at a volume level of five points from zero.
(When the application is disabled, there is no menu in the settings either.)
Just tried again but unfortunately I couldn't hear the sound issue a easly as I would've liked with your videos.
I tried with this one (the first 10secs), the background noises were really disturbing.
After uninstalling everything I could from adb and rebooting I feel like it's a little bit better but again, not sure if it's a placebo effect or not.
Will keep watching movies and videos on it for a few days and hope nothing disturbs me
if it doesn't work I'll try installing an external equalizer like Equalizer FX

I played this video on PC and on another tablet. It feels like our Huawei just doesn't have the best speakers. Their weak point is quiet sounds. And if you do not compare constantly, then, probably, you can get used to it.

I agree with you except on the last point. On some videos it becomes, at least for me, so bad that I had to switch with another device.
I'll keep looking for videos like that
I have a problem where Left & Right are switched with USB-C earbuds. Still waiting on HMOS 3.0 hoping it fix it.
