Does Huawei P20 have enough Ram ? - Huawei P20 Questions & Answers

Hi all
I need your help, I've currently the Oneplus 5 (8GB/128GB) and im thinking of buying the Huawei P20. I like the design and the small size on hand (compare to my OP5)
But I've only 1 doubt, and it's on the Ram. 4GB is enough for a Huawei phone? Is the phone enough optimized? No lags?
I dont play game but I'm using a lot of apps in same time, so I don't want to face some regressions on the rapidness of the phone compare to my current OP5.
Thanks a lot for your help
Regards

I've owned (still do) a P10 and before that an LG G5 that also had 4GB ram. I can say the difference was night and day between the two, the P10 handled everything much better.
I've just got my P20 1 day ago and I see no bad changes so I'm happy with my 4GB.
Disclaimer: I'm not playing so many games

Got the P20 yesterday and I find there's no lag and all is fine here
Update: Had P20 for almost 2 months, still working great, no lag. Awesome phone.

Got P20 a couple of days ago. No lags so far, everything smooth as butter. No hiccups in multitasking and gaming.

Can you check loading google maps, and then entering a destination and then starting a destination navigation. My p20 from entering destination, finding it, and then doing a navigation is very slow. Slower than a galaxy s7. Loading is no problem.

So it was first time I did this on this phone, first couple of tries were really long.
Loading is fine, searching places as well, but it got stuck on 'finding best route' or something similar after starting navigation.
2/3 times it got stuck. I went into privacy settings to check GPS etc but didn't change anything. Closed GMaps opened again and it's working perfectly now. Even like destinations that are thousands of kms away.
Maybe it has a problem with getting your location? It looked like it had to get the location for the first time or smth.
Edit: alright it seems kinda inconsistent. Once its stuck, I close the app, open it again, enter same destination and it works immediately. No idea what is causing this.

I found this keeps happening, I tried restarting the phone, clearing temp data etc. even uninstalled updates to bring it back to original, still the same. other apps like youtube and chrome etc work fine, the phone is otherwise fluid as water. hopefully theres a fix for this.
is there anyway to report this to Huawei?

I've got the s9+ and the p20. did some tests and was surprised at how faster the p20 was in 90% of loading and multi tasking than the s9+. both with same app quantity installed, killed all non required processes/data, so tried to make it even. very light as well.

I have the exact same problem with google maps. I've seen it mentioned in P20 Pro forum also. Couldn't find a fix for it yet
It seems a software bug so it probably has nothing to do with memory and so on. I'll check logcat in 10minutes to see if it complains about anything.

Although I think this seems to be a different problem than on P20 Pro. Afaik Pro has some issues with scrolling through the map or something? But yeah definitely seems like a software bug. Unless there is something wrong with the GPS here.

I have the dual SIM, L29 model. I'm not experiencing the Maps lags, but overall the P20 feels choppy. For me Google Photos is really clunky when scrolling between pictures, and overall scrolling within apps, switching between apps is not super smooth. I'm coming from a 2 year old OnePlus 3, which feels smoother than this new P20

Had my P20 a couple of days.
Have to say, it's been excellent. Just as good as my previous phone (Pixel 2 XL).

no problem with 4gb of ram. phone is fast and responsive

You can always get the china version, they have them with 6GB ram 64GB/128GB in built memory.

Slow S8

I'm trying to find a way to debug why my S8+ slows down.
I tap phone and I wait 2-3 secs for it to open for example. I tap dial a contact and again 2-3 seconds delay.
I had also strange issues with Antutu. I would get 120k, 150k, 170k. I thinks something in the background slows down the device. Process management apps don't work on Nougat apparently so how can I debug this to find the culrpit? Maybe adb shell?
Thanks

Definitely not normal. Might want to try it after a fresh wipe and without restoring. I was just telling my wife how fast this phone is and how it never lags.
Logcat might show it if it's constantly running.

maybe check which app is taking the most ram. Or you could try clean install as suggested earlier.

Same here, phone seems to be getting chocked at times, lags and lags, the even I am experiencing keyboard press delays. Did everything factory reset, clearing cache, nothing helped. With the same apps and usage my previous One Plus 3T would fly like a rocket, yes it was that fast compared to the S8+!
have the same problem here. the s8 is one of the slowest and inconsistent phones i ever had. nothing compared to the s7edge or nexus 6p. camera, gallery, launcher, bixby, everything can open instantly or opens after seconds, you never know. i think my next phones will be LG again, ui is a bit uglier, but almost as feature rich as the s8 without those performance issues (at least with g5 and g6).
My S8+ has started to be the same about 2 software updates ago, don't know if that is the issue, don't wanna do a fresh install. but is there any good app to see what could be slowing it down?
app switching has gotten slow as hell, some app starts takes up to 5sec etc. don't have the issue with keyboard klicks as some said, but over all, the phone has gotten slow, even my old overheated Z5p is faster than this.
Have had the S8+ since launch, but the slowness has only begun in like late june early august, witch made me think that it could have something to do with samsung updates?
I also thought my phone was slowing down recently, but yesterday I booted into recovery (stock) and cleared cache for the first time. It made a HUGE difference for me - the phone is fast & responsive again.
I've just removed the SD card from my S8+ and it seems a lot better. I wiped cache, too.

Overall speed

Would you say that the Honor 7X is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Honor 7X exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
No Problem with any performance and flies with the usage
Fantastic. Superb performance in this price range. Sometimes small lags is there but thats only if i applied any heavy modded themes. If we use stock themes no issues for me. Overall very happy with the speed. Never got any delay in any apps. Superb....
Day to day performance is great
Some APK`s i cant install, don`t know why, install Button is greyed out
You have to give the permission to file explorer & then you can install the app from file explorer doesn't work if you install from UC browser or other platforms directly.

My 3gb USA model gets me from day to day operations but suffers from severe freezing/lag at random times while browsing the web or viewing social media. I barely see any forums mentioning similar behavior so I'm starting to think I need to factory reset or I have a defective unit

Mine does this. Will basically freeze and not let me do anything. Does it often. I guess I will reset and see what happens.
Love the phone but can't handle the lag.
I'm stumped by people that say it's fast with no issues.

Yeah I feel like I'm in the twilight zone when I see people saying the speed is fine with minimal lag. That what leads me to think we may have defective units. With the Honor 6x I've seen people say that a factory reset fixed their issues.
Much better after factory reset. Slows still from time to time but no just stand still freezes. Bearable. I want this phone with these features with flagship internals though still. Thinking the view 10 may fit that when it comes to US.

Better performance.
I've found that disabling many of the Honor and EMUI apps (via Package Disabler or other methods) has made a huge difference in speed as well as battery life personally.
I've also experienced seemingly random slowdowns. Facebook seems to trigger it alot. clearing open apps speeds it back up.
Interestingly, it seems like it could be a ram issue, but i've never seen less than 1gb free ram, usually about 1.4gb free
I'll try disabling the emui/huawei apps to see if that helps.
I can't wait for oreo and project treble, then i can run regular aosp based without the emui bs.

They probably post after only using it a few days. Mine was fine at first. After about a week sometimes it would freeze, especially if I'd recently used facebook and chrome the keyboard would struggle. I'd need to either wait or kill a few apps and it would go back to being okay.
The stock camera software has a lot of features, but it is waaaaaay to slow.
I needed a new phone, but we had a lot of expenses last year and so I bought something cheap. It's not terrible. I'll be happy to get a year out of it.

Pixel 3 hangs for 15-30 seconds when switching apps, typing

I know there are memory management issues with this phone; what I'm not sure though is if the behavior I'm experiencing is just a manifestation of this well-known problem or another issue.
Since I got the phone a month ago, after some period of use after rebooting, simple actions like switching between two apps can cause the phone to hang for a long time - usually 20 or 30 seconds. The phone isn't completely hung - I can still go back to the home screen, and do some things, but whatever app I tried to switch to will be non-responsive for this whole time. Eventually, it will just start working again.
Other times, typing using the google keyboard will get stuck - that is, I can still type, but nothing shows up in the field where the text should appear. After a while it will suddenly "catch up" and everything I typed appears.
These two issues both seem to start happening around the same time, so it seems memory use related, but the amount of time involved seems very excessive for swapping.
I can fix this just by rebooting, but it always comes back after a while. I suspect it's related to how many different apps I've loaded and not just time of use, though, since sometimes it won't happen for a day or two, but it always happens again at some point.
I removed a bunch of apps that were migrated from my old phone (a Motorola Z Force), too, to try to eliminate a badly-behaving app, but I never had any issues like this on that phone, and it didn't make any difference.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Or does it sound like a possible hardware problem? I don't want to swap the phone unless it's clear this is abnormal behavior. Thanks.
It's abnormal behavior. My first thought is it might be related to a balky network or intermittent connection. Just a wild guess. Do you see the same issue in airplane mode? Also, if you check battery or cpu usage is anything hogging resources?

I've used the phone in exactly the same circumstances as my prior phone (and other devices) so I don't think it has to do with network connectivity; but next time it happens I'll try switching to airplane mode just to be sure. There's no visual indication of a network drop (e.g. wifi status icon). I haven't checked for anything hogging resources during these events, and generally I'm not having any battery life or performance problems. It's just switching apps that brings everything to a standstill for a while, and then it works fine again.

I have the exact same issue as OP describes.
Had a 64gb Pixel 3 when it was first released and it manifested the issue with the random hangs and freezes. I decided it was too buggy and returned it.
A month later got a 128gb Pixel 3 on the gift card promo and it is exhibiting the same issue as the OP and my original 64gb unit.
Doubtful it is a hardware issue since this is my second one with the same issue.
I have tried factory reset and removing any un-necessary programs on both, but the condition still persists.
Both phones were on Fi.
If the January patch does not fix the issue it will be time to switch back to iPhone.

Mine's 128gb (Verizon). The January patch looks trivial so not expecting any change here...
Not going to switch to iPhone but troubling that you have had this with two different phones. At the same time, pp seemed to think this is not typical behavior, and if it's a common OS issue then wouldn't a lot of people be talking about it? I'm not a crazy power user or anything, I never play games, pretty much use Waze, whatsapp, camera, facebook (lite), spotify, etc... really pretty standard apps.
I wonder if there's something unique to us that could be involved here? I'm not using any apps I wasn't using on my old phone, but I also had Oreo before and not Pie, so not a direct comparison. When I first set up my phone, though, all my old apps were migrated, including some Verizon bloatware I couldn't delete from the old phone. Is it possible that apps that were automatically migrated (but later deleted) could have left something behind that's causing issues with PIe?

I have have been on Google phones since Nexus 4 and upgrading like a good consumer every year.
Like yourself I am not doing anything crazy and have the run of the mill stuff like FB, Snap, kik, Whatsapp and IG. The only thing out of the ordinary I have on the phone is Cerberus and BlackBerry email.
Apps don't get migrated so that is not the issue. When you setup a new phone or transfer, some of the data is moved, but the app is re-downloaded from the app store.

Right - but it installed -everything- I had on my old phone including some Motorola & Verizon apps, which I then uninstalled (but maybe even missed some). Just thinking it might be possible that something hardware-specific to my old phone got installed on the pixel. In theory shouldn't matter but there seem to be so many nuances to Android, particularly across major releases, that I wondered if this could have been involved in the problem.
Anecdotally, it seems like it's been happening less often over time. I haven't had it happen in a few days, though I installed the update yesterday so I'm within 24 hrs of a clean boot now.

I've been having exactly the same issues for the last couple of days. Have just done a factory reset but the problem persists. The biggest issue is that when the phone is locked it seems to freeze as well and takes about 15-20 secs to unlock. Also if you phone it while its locked (and frozen) the incoming call isn't acknowledged (no ringing !) until after its unfrozen. Looks like I may have to return it and get a different phone !
Mike
More than a few people have been having issues with their Pixel 3, but I've yet to experience a single issue with memory management or slowdowns. In fact, I've found the Pixel 3 to be a far smoother UI than the iPhone X on the newest versions of iOS. Maybe I got lucky, but I'm more inclined to think it's about use. Just like my desktop operating system, I start from scratch every time I do a reformat, reset, or upgrade of a device. I can see there being issues with migrating old data. I'm also a fairly light app user; I've got around 100 apps in my drawer, most of which are Google apps or banking apps. Are the people experiencing these slowdowns installing a lot of things or running more resource intensive apps like Facebook? Not to say you shouldn't be able to do that with your phone, but I'm curious how behavior differs in our situations.
Feb update?
OP here, so more than a week since the February update landed and I have not had this happen since then. I'm kind of shocked, honestly, and keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but so far it looks like something they did fixed this.
The only other significant change I made was to uninstall the Facebook Lite app, a few days ago, but I've used that long before I had a Pixel 3 so doubt it's related. So... :fingers-crossed:!!

Maybe I should give Pixel 3 a try. Tried P3 twice since October and it was a phenomenal laggy mess specially under load ... My Pixel 2 had its ups and downs, specially with the Pie release. Took them 3-4 months to 'get it right' so I'd expect Pixel 3 to be no different.
I was experiencing some lag and short freeze (2 to 7/8 seconds) with my pixel after the latest update.
I tried a factory reset with little hope but it seems it did the trick for me. No issues ever since.

7 pro getting slower?

Hi guys.
I recently switched to OnePlus ( 7 pro specifically ) and out of all the phones I've used, XS max, note 10, S10 ECT it's by far the best phone I've used. Although 1 small problem is lately my phone has been feeling like it's getting slower and slower, more and more lags seems to be happening, and things are taking a lot longer to open. Is anyone else experiencing this, or have any ideas what I could do?
Thanks in advance.
I have never experienced this. Best I could think of is to factory reset, start completely from scratch. Maybe root and try a custom kernel.

Yeah I've thought of that. I've only used 50% of my storage so I don't think that would be the case. My last resort was a factory reset and custom kernels/Roms ECT. I'll see what other ideas people have first then see how we go from there I think
Okay so I installed Beta 7 and it seems to be a bit better, still not as good as it was when I first purchased it though
Are you running android 10 or 9? I'm sticking with 9 because i had issues with 10 (so do many others) No signs of slowdown here. Ive played with a note 10 and it doesnt compare to the op7 pro in terms of performance.

I'm on 10, have thought about changing back to 9 but there's quite a few things I enjoy about 10, except the slowness.
Don't get me wrong when I first opened my 7 pro, my other devices including my S10 didn't even feel like they were in the same ball park, but now it just feels like it's getting sluggish.

I'm not rooted, just stock Android 10.
It would really help by giving more info on what exactly you mean by "sluggishness". Are you saying general app opening speed/ sluggishness when typing emails/ slow bootup speeds? Where really is the problem...for all you know it could be a placebo effect or btw have you checked the screen refresh rate...is it 90hz or 60hz? Being on 90hz for so long, any other phone to me looks sluggish...

The whole phone, everything I do, nothing is instant anymore. And yes it's on 90hz, I agree I used my S10 the other day and it looked terrible scrolling through stuff compared to 90hz
I second the OP. I have an OP 7 Pro, 12GB version. And after software updates etc, I have seen slowness on my phone. However, after root and running FDE.AI once, looks much better. I have no documentation to prove that actually is the case though, maybe a placebo effect.

Funny, I can't see such sluggishness on my OP7Pro. It will be a joke to see sluggishness on these phones given that the phone specs are nothing short of desktop-level specs. I would highly recommend factory resetting your device or better yet starting right from scratch i.e. doing a fastboot stock rom flash using the latest update. This should (hopefully) iron out your issues. I'd also suggest being a bit careful on the apps that you install and rather not restore from google backups. It's best to start afresh (at least once in a while)
Just curious... Have you tried shutting off the animations or at sped them up?
I scaled mine down to 0 and my device is blazing fast now.

That is my plan providing I can't do anything without factoring resetting.

No I haven't actually, I'll give that a go and see how I go
If you've used up 50% of your storage then of course the phone will be processing things slower than a phone that had nothing stored in it. That effect occurs with every device that has memory.

Well I've been at over 70% storage used for the past few months and have seen zero drop in performance. My pixel 2 xl is 80% storage used and it to performs as if it was bone stock. I have over 100 apps on my OP7 pro and haven't lost anything that I didn't have in terms of battery and performance. I swear I don't know what some people do with there phones but issues like these and battery usually come from poorly coded apps. You also can't download PornHub mobile and expect it not to come with consequence of some sort.

I've had multiple devices where I've used well over 50% storage and never had any issues.

There's a pornhub mobile app? I didn't even know, cheers ???
Kidding, but serious. I am not sure what's happening, maybe I have some app that's causing stupid issues I am not sure, I think I'm gonna factory reset and go from there I think.

Given the A53 is a "budget" device with low end hardware, the best you can really do is run a "clean" OS with as little bloat as possible. There isn't much that will make your device faster besides reducing what is running at any given time.
Thank you the attentive answer, it not sounds too good . Not can be at a good and still cheap too
What is your proposal for the Galaxy A73 have you any experience this phone for regarding this topic?
Temporary fix until software update hopefully can fix it.
1. Install and use nova launcher
2. Navigation bar buttons instead gestures.
3. Keyboard lag use Gboard
4. Messenger lag use google messenger.
It seems to fix most lag. It also seems to this is a software issues. Affecting Samsung apps and services. So delete all Samsung apps u can and disable the other u can't delete. Do not use any Samsung apps do not sign in to Samsung. Scrolling stutter only able to fix if screen is put to 60hrz but this isnt a 100% it still will occasionally stutter when scrolling webpages Facebook and so on but it is far less then with 120hrz.
But the 4 solutiona mentioned should fix most lag.

Thank you these usefull advise. i will try it asap and will feedback that what is the result.
This phone was definitely slower when I first got it. It took a few days of use for it to get adjusted. I also always replace the launcher with nova, keyboard with gboard, and messages with signal.
Then I use ADB to remove a couple of stupid packages. Like anything Facebook related any of the AR packages, apps that I don't use (why the hell does Samsung have two messaging apps on a phone stock?).
I came from the OnePlus 6t and I feel like this device is only a minor upgrade overall. In the end that's kind of all I was looking for because the 6t still ran great.
I do notice some poor responsiveness in the touch screen from time to time (although that seems to be getting better each day) and I definitely noticed a pretty big delay when I use voice to text. It definitely takes a second to fire up the mic which leads to it picking up where I'm talking mid sentence.
I may yank out more of the Samsung system apps as time goes on. For the moment I'm enjoying the Bixby routines because it's keeping me from needing to install Tasker. I recommend everyone try that at their own risk. Do some research first but there are a lot of system apps and processes that Samsung preloads in here that always run in the background sucking up precious RAM. I say try it at your own risk because if you uninstall the wrong applications you can mess your phone up pretty bad.
Also Facebook is a big resource hog. Even on an iPhone 13 it can stutter occasionally or even freezes specially in marketplace and makes the phone run hot. If you don't mind using the mobile version I would highly recommend using that instead the app.
I also think there is better devices for less mOney that even offer more but probably never get those 4 software updates. Like the Blu F91 BLU F91 5G | 2022 | 3-Day Battery | Unlocked | 6.8” Full HD+ Display | 128/8GB | 48MP Quad Camera | US Version | US Warranty | Sky Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09WJM9XVW/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_FW76ZJAX9F1BWN35ZA5M?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 it has wireless fast charging and a gas charger in the box a case and screen protector and headphones. It's 5G and it's 250 dollars. This phone overall is a much better deal but the software probably will never or only be upgraded one time unfortunately.

I agree 100% about facebook. I stopped using the app shortly after they first released it LOL. I find it much much easier to just use the mobile website.
I was looking at some Chinese devices as well before settling on this. One of the reasons I went with the a53 5G is compatibility with T-Mobile's 5G in my area. Also the software and support factored in. I was lucky enough to have my 6t for almost 4 years. That's the longest I've ever had a smartphone for and I really enjoyed being able to get that much lifespan out of a inexpensive device compared to the competition. The promise of support for this device led me to choose it even though it's only a mild upgrade from what I had before.

thank you the usefull and detail of rich description...
It is laggy because Samsung picked the weaker hardware for this phone (even though it sells for mid range price, there is no SD778 or Exynos 1080 or Dimensity 1200). As others said you could disable things and only use 60Hz screen. But if you haven't bought it yet you can buy the A52s which will be smoother.

Did removing these packages help performance? I am going back and forth about whether to return the phone or not (the camera is unusable at the moment - but hopefully that changes with software updates - I am yet to receive the April update). Thanks.

Removing packages helped free up some RAM. I'm definitely not experiencing the level of lag you're describing and the camera seems fine compared to my 6t.
This phone is half the price of most flagship devices. I'm not sure what your expectations are for such a device. Perhaps you should get a better device, or wait for the new oneplus Nord and see how it's performs.

I'm confused. I don't have Facebook on my A53 or ADB wasn't needed if it was originally (and not system app). Did you grab a carrier one? That would explain it to me. Not seeing lag on my unlocked A53.
If you grabbed an unlocked one then I don't know why you'd have lag unless it had a physical issue or you use something I don't use that causes it.

Enable developer options and disable all animations should fix this without the need for installing a 3rd party launcher or other software.

Hmmm, the camera takes about 1 to 2 seconds to take a photo, and sometimes doesn't take a photo at all and because of the lag I often miss the photo opportunity because I am waiting to see if it worked (daytime photos). The rest is manageable, but still laggier then my old S9+, I at least thought it would match that performance (I don't game, so only day to day use performance is important for me). Seems like my phone is unusually slow, maybe something went wrong when transferring over from s9+ and I should start fresh with a factory reset! Everything else about the phone is great, so I will persevere . A few software updates should hopefully smooth things out. Thanks for the help/suggestions.

If its only the camera from press to saved then the April update should mostly if not fully solve that. You have the April update yet or not?
For me it seems to be under a second after April update. Pre-April it was more like 3-5 seconds.
Not really something I would have cared that much about either way lol. Just have to get used to it.
I've had this phone almost a week now.. I have SwiftKey as my kb...
Can't say I've noticed any type of lag on this device... 120hz, dark mode background services running, wifi calling on you name it.
What are y'all even all the reviewers doing to experience lag??
Kind of would like to know lol

A53 is not a "Budget" device. It is mid level. Samsung's budget devices are the A1#, A2# and A3# phones.
