Is it even worth getting a note now with the s9+ - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Originally, the note was the ultimate 'phablet' because phones were smaller, but now every phone is a phablet, especially the s9+, is there even a point to getting a Note now?
Apart from the pen

For the retail price nope. But if i had the money to spend i would get a note for around $550 which i see new on ebay. Instead of the $850 for the plus.

I have both, for now. While I do miss the S Pen from time to time, the 9+ is definitely the better device.

I'm a long time Note user and went S8+>Note8>S9+. The Note8 isn't much bigger than the S9+ statistically but it's bulkier in every day use and viewable screen area isn't that much bigger on the Note. My biggest beef with the Note8 vs. earlier Notes is 18:9 isn't a great format for note taking. It felt awkward trying to write on that narrow a display which was compounded by the curved edges. I have a Tab S3 and its my lone S Pen device for now. The Note-series used to leap frog the specs of the S-series but outside the dual lens camera and more RAM that didn't happen this round. I'd still be interested in the Note9 if it isn't a bigger-for-no-reason rehashed S9+ with a pen.

Yeah me too. I miss the S-pen from time to time but when u was using the Note 8, I didn't use thes-pen, even from time to time.
I'm keeping both for a little while longer. S9+ better phone in every way for me, for my use.

agree, would only go back to the note if I needed the pen on a daily basis, the pen is nice but I would rather they use that space for battery lol

Just came from a note 8 to the s9+. S9 is better in all ways and don't miss the spen at all. Plus this is just a better looking device and feels better to use

The bulkiness of the Note 8 was what made me upgrade.

Yeah. I used the S Pen heavily when I had the Note4, Note Edge, Note5 and Note7, but found myself using it significantly less with my Note8 for whatever reason. I would almost forget about it until I had to select some small text, edit an image with instructions and notes for a client, or create/accept electronic signatures.

I have never used my S-Pen, not even on my 12.2 Pro. I am considering making the switch. I can get one for $650 out the door and I just sold my other Note 8 for $550, so not much out of pocket.

The battery on s9+ is a godsend. I took off charge at 3am, read news for half hour, listened to spotify on way to work(40mins), worked a 12 hour shift, spotofy on way home and alot of texting on breaks at work and 62% at bedtime at 930pm. Work has alot of areas with no reception so standby usage was 1.8% per hour instead of the usual 0.5% when there is a strong signal.

Yeah I was just testing the stand by on mine today. I unplugged a little over 17 hours ago and didn't turn on any sort of power saving features. Just let the phone sit and do it's thing. Over the course of that time it only dropped from 100% charge down to 96% charge and then when I picked it up to use it I updated a bunch of apps which dropped it down another 4%. But 4% discharge over 17 hours is pretty remarkable in my opinion.

BarryH, I agree 100% with your statement. My biggest gripe with the note series is the curved edges. It's almost impossible to write as you get to the curve edges, which lite you stated the screen is narrower. Note series needs to have a flat screen for better Spen functions.

got samsung note 2 which needs updating ,
which one to upgrade to now note 4 or the note edge ,
can some one share there experiences ,
im more inclined toward the note edge
This should help you
some prefer the Note 4
but i like the Edge its awesome

I personally love the Note Edge. I had both phones. I had the Note 4 for about 4 months before I was able to get the Note Edge. They are the same. Almost all alike even for hardware. But yes if you want to spend a little more get the Note Edge. The Note Edge is great. I love the Edge.
I regret buying the edge...
I love the second screen and the new tech, however, NO companies have made an extended battery. I always had a zerolemon extended battery for my note 2/3 and I did not realize that there would be zero support for extended batteries for the edge
most extended batteries needs a new back or case to hold it, no one is taking risks with designing cases for so few consumers (edge owners).
Ill trade ya note edge for note 4!
I feel the same way, the edge is a great phone but I need an extended battery for this beast of a phone!!

Yes, the spare battery kit is a life saver. I can't believe how fast the Note Edge's battery drain.
I can't get a full day of normal usage out of it, as in a few hrs of games such as Real Racing 3, Clash of Clans, Modern Combat 4, Asphalt 8, and throw in Youtube, Whatsapp, BBM, and the occasional tinkering of the device.
I have to replace the battery when evening comes.
When I had my Note 3, I could easily get a day and a half.
But I do like it when I pull out the Note Edge and people around me gawk at me and ask what that fancy Edge screen is for.
I am in Jakarta, Indonesia and they don't sell the device here (bought mine in Singapore), and I feel very unique and special for owning the Note Edge.
I still have both phones, my wife uses the note 4.
I get very similar batter on both phones, I think the edge is missing the battery fix update that the note 4 got.
For the first week, I was preferring the feel of the note 4 a little more, but I still ended up giving it to my wife.
After using only the Note Edge for the last few months, when I use my wife's note 4 every once in a while I immediately miss my Note Edge side panel screen.
The Note Edge really has a more premium feel with the side panel.

the N915G/snapdgragon variant is more battery consuming (or so I heard) I think I got more juice out of my 915S, but I'm with you, having a device that is not all over the place is a pleasure on its own
P.S. you got a pretty commercial family xD (just read your sig)
gone for the note edge
I had to get rid of my note edge not having an extended battery available for me was a deal breaker, the phone is definitely awesome!!

If I need any extra battery, I have this. Also the quick charger that came with this phone is amazing. But this power bank can charge my phone from completely dead to fully charged.

Owners would you buy the S6 again

I'm looking to buy a S6 but I already have a Note 4 do you believe as a current owner that the S6 is worthy of a purchase if you already had the Note 4? I currently have a iPhone 6 for work and a Note 4 for personal and I'm thinking of changing the iPhone, your thoughts ladies and gentlemen?

if you wanna change the iphone to galaxy S6 then i would say go for it....but from NOTE 4 to S6 is different....if you want more battery and bigger screen stick to the NOTE 4, if you want a bit smaller phone, with better camera, better build quality, and faster then the S6....but it's a bit hard to justify the cost of the S6 if you a NOTE 4....i have a galaxy S6 and i am very happy with it, i have some minor issues with the chamfered edges color peeling, wobbly home button....but again nothing is perfect....
Thanks for the input. Be interesting to see what the overall opinion is of the forum
I would not. I would go with LG g4, which was my second option.
Here are the reasons:
- battery life far bellow average, a little bit more than 3 hours SOT. I was used to more than 5 with the Lenovo z2 pro I had before,
- horrible multitasking, apps reloading all the time
- the front facing camera has a noticeable fisheye effected, which is not really great for selfies
I would recommend your to wait for the Note 5.
Better have diversity of OS! I find having an iPhone 6 and Note 4 a perfect combination! Having 2 'phones' running TouchWiz would be pretty boring.
Great combinations: An iPod and an Android phone, an android phone and iPad, iPhone and Android tablet or both Android phone and tablet

I would have a note 4 for work, and an S6 for personal. The S6 and Note 4 have equal battery life despite those arguing to the contrary, I have 5.5 hours SOT now, and had the same on the note 4. The S6 and iphone are very similar, except the S6 has better battery.
Multitasking is absolutely fine on the S6.
S6 is for persons who prefer one hand operation most of the time. Note 4 is for those who prefer to have more work done with the help of the S-pen and bigger screen. Since you already have a Note 4 and an iPhone 6 (best of both worlds) the Galaxy S6 may be a demotion on your part. Best to wait for the upcoming Note or S6 Plus.

I have no experience with the Note 4 but I would buy an S6 again without hesitation. Unlike many posts from these S6 forums I have not experienced the problems that others mention. The battery easily lasts a day. With a 32GB model I'm at about 50% on storage. The processor is much faster than my S3. The display has to be seen to be believed. I have a SM-G920I. As always, YMMV!

Hm. More than 5 hours SOT? I guess this is with a lot of stuff disabled / custom ROM / brightness manually all the way down?
I regards to multitasking, in comparison to other phones with 3gb ram, it is abysmal, I thought this is a common understanding (and also my personal experience).
I would not.
I love this camera but i can't leave with this memory ram management, multitasking is horrible, hope next update solve all the problems or i will change.

NFC, location, HD calling, gmail and outlook syncing plus some other apps syncing automatically, Web browsing, YouTube and Play Music streaming, on complete stock, unrooted. I average about 24-35+ hours with 4.5 - 5+ hours SOT of battery life, depending on how long I play games. Phone also loses about 1-2% while sleeping over 5 or so hours while on WiFi. Multitasking is just fine too. Not everyone gets bad battery life on this phone and has to resort to flashing custom roms and kernels. Stock is just fine.
Edit: brightness stays on auto and ranges from 20% to 80% throughout the day.

Not for all the tea in china. The signal strength of this phone is atrocious. Lucky to get 1 bar of 4g where all my other phones get full reception.
A very varied response, now i'm more confused than ever.
I would buy it again because I came from an s4 and his thing blows it out of the water. I've heard S6 edge has a better build, but I prefer the regular S6. Also, careful when purchasing an S6 cuz you might have hardware issues like the wobbly home button, camera is blurry on startup (sometimes) and flash stays on (very small and not noticeable in the day). I say this because I had a defectve S6 before. My new S6 is perfect except my home is a tiny bit crooked but you won't notice it unless you scrutinize it. I'm you pretty sure you will miss the big screen on your note 4 if you're moving from that size. The only major flaw in the S6 is the memoruy managent when switching apps but everything else is on point.

Upgrade from Galaxy S6 to S7 worth it?

I'm considering upgrading from my current 64 GB Galaxy S6, which I love, to the S7 or perhaps even the S7 edge (although I'm not quite sure the curved screen is worth the extra money to me). Has anyone already gone that route? How are you liking your S7 compared to your S6? How does the S7 camera hold up compared to the S6 camera? (I know that the reviews are generally favorable, but it would be good to hear from someone who's used them both as their everyday phone.)
Will the slower SD card in the S7 affect the user experience compared to the faster internal storage of my current S6?
I can upgrade to S7 using a new two-year plan from work, so I'd be paying only $199, and I can easily sell my current S6 to come out ahead, even with a case and SD card.
Should I make the jump?
Thanks for your feedback!

Hi. Since nobody answered yet i'm going to share my thoughts. I'm coming from an s6e and got a s7e. The screen is a bit better (a bit brighter for my eyes) and bigger. Even if it's bigger as a phone it doesn't feel that large....fits great in the hand.
Camera is better overall. The s6 has 16mpx so you'll have a bit more detail in good light but everywhere else the s7 is better. (Dynamic range and colour accuracy)
See the photos. The one 4:3 is the s7edge.

And the crops from that.
The left is s6e and the right s7e
I'm not using an sd card yet but plannig to so i don't have anything on that. Did i mention the battery? 8.5 - 9 hours of SOT + 20h standby.... my s6 was barely doing 4.5h of sot and 16h of stby.
The only thing i'm missing is the infrared blaster.
I would make the jump without hesitation. The s7e is a great phone.
Trimis de pe al meu SM-G935F folosind Tapatalk
I had the S6 for about a month and then switched to the S7. The S6 is a nice phone with good specs, but the S7 is even better. It has a better feel in the hand (rounded back), the camera is flat to the back, the home button has way better feeling and quality (no chatter). MicroSD is a good thing, I use a 32GB card for pictures, videos and music. And finally a phone that I can use while in the bathtub without worries. No complains about the cameras of both devices, I think the S7 is better on most situations. With the battery of the S6 I reached barely 2 days of standby with moderate use, with the S7 these 2 days are no problem, I reached 3 full days at best. So this is an improvement too. My advice: If you can switch with, do it.
I came from the s6. The s7 is by far a better phone. Battery life if better, its alot smoother and responsive. I would totally make the jump if I were you.
Forward ever, backward never.

it all comes down to cost. If you can get it I don't see any reason to wait any longer. I sold my s6 edge plus for 700 dollars and got the s7 edge on contract for 200. Was well worth the upgrade
Never going back to 6. I'm not sure about the edge as well and for the price I didn't want to risk being unhappy with a very expensive device.
Pros and improvements
Battery, performance, home button, fingerprint reader, camera, feel/grip, external storage, water proof
Cons
Finding a good glass screen protector
Loss of IR blaster
I came from a Note 5 and I think the S7 is far superior, and the Note 5 beats the S6.
My geekbench 3 scores for my 820 S7 are 2343 single and 5470 multi, those are laptop numbers and crush last years ~1400 single core for the S6.
I would upgrade for the battery alone.
As much as I like to buy things that last, it seems with flagship phones that keep 70% of their resale value for 12 months, the economics are still pretty favorable for yearly upgrades.
Well, I made the jump and upgraded from my S6 to the S7. I sold the S6 on Craig's List, which easily paid for the upgrade plus a nice case and a 128 GB SD card.
I'm really glad I upgraded. I loved my S6, but the S7 is better in every way: zippy performance with absolutely no lag, an amazing camera (much better than the S6 camera, which was already great), great battery life, water resistance---overall a great, great upgrade. I'm loving my S7.
If you're contemplating the same thing, upgrade to the S7. You won't regret it for a second!

Nice one

At this present time, this is the greatest smartphone of all time IMO

I don't know where to start really. But the Samsung Galaxy S7, to me at least, is the best smartphone I have ever used and I know it is saying a lot, especially for me that have used SO MANY smartphones these past few years. But I have to give credit where it's due.
I have had the Nexus 6P, IPhone 6s and 6s Plus, LG V10 and G4, Note 5, Moto X, some windows phones, HTC one M8 (one of my favorite phone ever) etc....but the S7 is pretty much the phone that seals the deal for me. It checks every box.
I know Samsung gets a lot of hate for some of their decisions in the past with their plasticky build quality and touchwiz being laggy and cartoony and all but they have turned things around big time. They started with the S6, then went on to the note 5 which was already incredible. But this S7 is just on another level, again in my personal opinion. When you consider that the S7 has arguably the best display, best camera, is water resistant, fast charger and wireless charger, great battery life, performance is absolutely STELLAR, the black Onyx is gorgeous, the size is perfect......what phone out there offers you all this package? Seriously I'd like to know.
Of course nothing in life is absolutely perfect. Like the fact that it's a fingerprint magnet and that the Snapdragon versions are having Android system battery drain issues (using the Exynos here) and some having issues here and there. Everyone's experience is going to be different. But from my perspective, this is the phone to beat. There's a lot of rant threads when a phone comes out but not much love. I truly genuinely believe that the S7 is the greatest smartphone of all time right now. Just see what it offers and and compare it to the competition, this is the total package! Freaking love this phone!

I agree. I am picky myself, besides the side facing speaker it is perfect.

I have to agree. It's not perfect, but neither is any other phone. But for me this is the best set of compromises available today (I have the Edge, but the S7 is pretty much the same phone other than screen and battery size). No battery drain issues here on the Qualcomm version, btw. From the forums, I would say it's a small minority of users who have significant battery issues.

I have the SD820 variant and battery life has been a little bit disappointing (only getting around 4-5 hrs SOT), but definitely a great phone. For me the biggest downside is not having the ability to bootloader unlock and root, but hopefully an exploit can be figured out.
Honestly, if this phone had stock android, bootloader unlock/root, and boomsound speakers it would be a perfect smartphone. But as it is, its pretty damn good. The S7 and the 6P are honestly the best android phones of all time.

Have you previously had a phone that gave you more than 5 hours sot?

My 5X could hit 5 hrs SOT mostly because of the tweaks and optimizations I had with root + Xposed. Don't get me wrong, I'd say 5 hrs SOT is pretty good, (like an A- if we were giving grades), it's just that I've heard people easily getting 6+ hrs SOT, so i guess I had high expectations.
Before today, i was barely getting 4 hrs SOT, but then Verizon pushed out an OTA that fixed "connectivity issues" which seemed to improve battery life. I also uninstalled the facebook and messenger app and now use a third party app called Toffeed.
I'm all stock and this is me right now. Still got 30% left and I used it heavily since I'm off today. What a freaking beast. Samsung should have made all the S7 Exynos.

Agree. Don't know why they made that choice.

That's insane, I wish all variants had the Exynos. I'm pretty sure the Exynos is Samsung's own SOC, I'm pretty sure it's better optimized for the device. Overall the Exynos has better battery life and performance than the SD820

Yeah. And it has the unlocked bootloader. That's why I'm so happy with this S7, it just has zero compromises for me. Even the speaker being bad is blown out of proportion to me. It's definitely not the best but it surely suits my needs.

I must admit. Having been a htc fan for the last 5 flagships at least the s7 is a refreshing change. However there's one thing and for me it's a very big thing.
Thanks to Samsung going against the openness of android etc and making some s7's completely unroot able. And there being no custom Roms out to try despite the phone being out for a couple of weeks. Development is nil.
I'm on xda for a reason and that's to mod my device and improve it by flashing the work of some of the great devs here. Yes my variant has root now but if I wanted this amount of anti modding security etc I would have bought an iPhone.
Now I know I'm new to Samsung but I have been told the s6 development was quiet. I in all honesty can see me selling up for the htc ten or another device made by a oem who at least allows developm3nt. So on one hand I have a stunning device. On the other it's not worth me keeping as I cant do anything near I used to on my m9. I shall keep my eye on the s7 forums over the next two weeks
Have just about every new phone to date including the iPhone 6S. The S7 IMO is the very best. I put the IQ Shield, I think that is what it's called, goes on wet and when dries it is invisible. Have it on front and back. Eliminates fingerprints, when I go out I put it in a case. The S7 is the perfect size, lightning fast and beautiful design. One thing I find is the LTE radio is very strong, great reception, GPS is very fast, couldn't be happier.

Question Who's Ordered, and why?

I have been watching the development of folding devices for a few years. I've decided to go for it, as the tech seems reliable this time. I like the idea of a more compact phone like the old Motorola V3.
Pre-ordered the 128GB Version in green.
What's your thoughts?
I will be, just deciding on the colour.
I had an original Z Flip and really liked it, but there were a couple of annoyances with it - namely the inside screens protector which got oily and grubby within seconds. I could have removed it, but there were concerns over voiding warranty at the time, and I didn't really want to chance it.
The external screen was also completely pointless, something else they have remedied this time round.
The only thing making me pause, is that I know I will want the Pixel 6 Pro when that launches, and the fact that Samsung haven't done anything to these cameras from the OG Flip.
Early photo samples seem 'ok', but I may wait for official reviews before fully committing.
Just preordered my wife the pink 256gb and myself the grey 256gb version.
We have S10s now that have been great but are ready to enter the flip phone arena. She is excited about using the camera from outside cover with the pic preview option as well as the flex mode for video calls.
I am excited about a compact phone to throw in my pocket and flex mode for video calls etc.
Kind of bummed out about the 3.5mm jack but just ordered some usb C to 3.5mm adapters on amazon should be good to go.
We have $100 credit each left via samsungs website....will probably get the clear ring case for my wife and maybe leather for me. Also interested to see what Spigen comes up with, I see on amazon you can already order their cases.

I've gone for a Naked skin from Slickwraps.
Thanks I will check that one out. I'll have 5 cases in before I even get the phone
Pretty crap they don’t include the case in the box like they did with the OG Fold.
I never really liked it, but it was handy when I was out and about and wanted that extra protection!
One that's compact yet powerful and is not "bar" type = Flip 3, so probably will get one.
With 120Hz display refresh rate and not so power efficient(!) SD888, the 3300 mAh battery might become a concern.
I have the green 256gb on pre order, looking foward to a flip phone again, fold 3 is to heavy.
Trading in a 8t, I'm sure the flip 3 will take better photos??
I am watching youtube vids on flip 3, some say camera concerns. We use sammy S10's right now for the past few years, flip 3 probably has drastically better camera then our S10?
Can't imagine Samsung would release a phone with subpar cameras. Obviously, not going to be the same standard as the S21 Ultra.
Good review below
ordered the cream 256GB. After using the note9 for 3 years I'm sick of large heavy phones.
I also really miss my starTac's from the 90's.
I would have bought the Flip2 5G but I need the IP rating as I do a lot of exercising/sweating with the phone.
My only concern is the wireless charging/NFC with a magentic mount such as scosche. I have wireless charging everywhere (car, bedroom, office, lounge, kitchen).. so battery life is not a concern.
Like the previous post, I've got tired of big heavy phones (currently Note10+) but also just looking forward to having something a bit different. Phones have got really samey and just not as much fun to own anymore. Hoping the flip 3 brings back the excitement of owning something a bit different, even if I will have to charge it every 5 min
my gf have the original flip, the first one. (hey, of course she want it, i'm the one that paid for it).
it' time to upgrade to flip3 since the more you fold/open/close the flip, the crease going to get worse.
i ordered the 256gb flip3 since it' the same price as the 128gb flip3 with the 50$ credits applied to 256gb flip3.
I got mine today works great, looking forward to root and ROMS!

Finally found the man who's responsible for companies making phones thinner and thinner before 2020, thus providing smaller and smaller batteries.
Pre-order grey 256GB and seem like next month only can get it here at Malaysia. I'm after the technology as Samsung said screen is 80% better than before. Camera seem not really superb but usable as daily use.

I'm doing the same. Got a OP8 5G through a tmobile promo half off so i only paid about $400 for it if I remember correctly. Now tmobile is giving me $1000 trade-in credit for it. The offer is just too good to pass up, even though I'm really going to miss my OP8

I think I must plead guilty, after years of giant phones I've genuinely had enough and am ready for a change
