[APP] Button Mapper: Remap Bixby single, double and long press for FREE - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Themes, Apps, and Mods

NOTE: On a rooted device, this is the fastest, most reliable and problem-free method for remapping Bixby (no limitations, no setup)
Button Mapper allows you to remap any action you want to physical or capacitive hardware buttons. This includes volume buttons, Bixby button, and many buttons on game controllers and other hardware you attach to your phone.
You can map shortcuts, apps or actions to single press, double tap and long press for hardware buttons.
The Bixby button on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is supported as of version 0.62
Bixby remapping of single, double and long press is completely free. No ads. Pro version not required.
Does not require root. If your device is rooted, you will have many more options (essentially unlimited). Also with root, Bixby remapping does not involve any hacks, it is implemented at the input level (native).
This does require an adb command to remap Bixby on unrooted devices. It's a one-time setup. I do not use the method used by other apps because it leads to a poor user experience (i.e. swiping right causes actions to occur, gets stuck in a loop)
This app is continually updated with new features and improvements.

I'm unable to test because I don't have a computer at the moment for the adb command, so just had a question. Does this allow for one of the remapped options to still be bixby, specifically the screen/feed you get when swiping right on the default launcher? ie remap bixby button single tap to flashlight, remap double tap to bring up bixby feed (or regular bixby)?

Perfect! Thank you. Why won't it work with the screen off though?

The best way to use the button for both Bixby and something else would be to have single press open Bixby and long press turn on the flashlight.
To do this, leave the bixby button "on" in bixby settings, leave single press default in Button Mapper, and set long press to flashlight.

Good app, however, it needs a permission to record video!
can you please explain why?

The screenshot function uses Android's cast API and the flashlight requires the camera permission. The app never records video.
The app will ask for permissions as needed, that way you know which action requires the permission.

This app's pretty good. I am unrooted and did the recommended ADB step and it works perfectly. Unlike other remap apps, it doesn't accidentally launch Bixby if you set it up correctly. The extra button is finally useful!

Might be a false reading. On GSAM, mine is reading as 0.1% in the last hour of use.
I've never even seen it in the Battery drainer list. It could be any number of things on your device.

The screenshot is definitely the problem. Unfortunately the bug is for Samsung to fix, as it seems AOD has a problem when using Android's cast API (which I use to take screenshots without root).

Anyone Else not able to Simulate a "Menu Button" press?

I cannot simulate a menu button press on this phone. Blu's ESL customer support didn't help at all.
On the Note 4, you hold down the recent apps button and the phone treats it like a menu button press. I use a few somewhat legacy apps and not having menu press completely breaks those apps.

Current apps should not need a menu button. However, if you have old outdated apps you can simulate it with the (weirdly named) built in "suspend button." Settings > Advanced settings > Suspend option. Enable that and it will overlay a round button on the screen. When you need the menu button tap the on-screen button. It will expand and show more buttons. The button with three dots is the menu button. If you'd prefer to hide the "suspend button" so that it's not always visible you can do so by long pressing on it. You can unhide it in the notification panel.
Awesome, that works, but what a sad work around to an issue solved so much more efficiently on other devices.

Sad indeed. I will continue to poke around for another solution to this, with the ultimate goal of remapping that recent apps button to a menu. I am not sure this will be possible without root access though. Good news is there is another thread here on XDA with a bounty/reward of around $200 at the moment for anyone who can get a workable root and TWRP recovery goin for this phone. :fingers-crossed:

True, but as I said no current app should need a menu key. Most new Android phones have no menu key because it's not needed. I have about 200 apps installed and only one needs the menu key workaround because it hasn't been updated in years.

Button Mapper (remap Bixby and other buttons)

Button Mapper on the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton&hl=en
If your device is rooted, you have complete ability to remap the Bixby Button. You can disable the Bixby assistant, it does not need to be enabled for this to work. There are no compromises with this method. You can get rid of Bixby and program whatever single, double and long press actions you want.
If your device is not rooted, you can still remap Bixby using an experimental method. This method also works with Bixby disabled, and will allow you to map whatever actions you like to a single press or long press. It requires running a command in adb shell once. After this, the Bixby button can be remapped with Button Mapper. A slight inconvenience, but it works.
If you don't like the stuttering that occurs on Samsung devices with certain Accessibility features enabled, got to Advanced Options and select "Remap Bixby only"

Sweet, installing this now. I'll let you know if it works on my phone. Just what I was looking for.

Hi flar,
Quick question, I already remapped my Bixby button to ASSIST action to have Google assistant on button press.
I am therefore rooted.
Would I need to remap the button to the stock feature, or can I leave it like this ?
Works like a charm ? thanks ?

My question is, should I revert the Generic Keylayout to its original state to use that app properly or not.
The only issue I have seen is now the volume slider only has 4 steps of volume instead of the 15 steps it used to have. When I do a volume up up or down it goes 25% each way. I uninstall this and it goes back to normal.
Am I missing something or what is the ADB command that I need to use?
Never mind.

Oh I see. You should not need to change the key layout, the point of the app is to modify without having to do that. It may not even work correctly if you've modified the keylayout file.
Really appreciate this app! Got the pro already.
About the Tasker intent, how does it work really?
Can't wait to test this app, although I have a question..why does this app needs access to observe the text you write, thy is this needed? Until now I used bxActoins which did not needed this but yours doesn't need bixby services enabled so I would like to try it.. I'm just curious why is this needed
EDIT: Just tried the app and its working really really well, I am very pleased with the result on non-rooted phone Is there a way to add the google now screen scan option to open? I used to get this smart screen search with the google now on my HTC 10 but now with this I can only see it opens either google assistant or google search..
Thank you for all your hard work, I appreciate it
App works great but it's limited on the functions of the button. Would be nice to be able to start up any app. Also, after uninstalling and rebooting, I can't seem to get bxActions to work again. The button is just disabled and doesn't do anything.

Remap Bixby manually & using all in one gestures; Bind to flashlight [ROOT]

The bixby button is an absolute waste of a physical key on samsungs part, and ever since I got my S8 a little over a month ago I've been trying to find a way to completely remap the key without any of this bypass nonsense that flashes bixby for a moment before proceeding with your action, or returning to your home screen etc. I'm currently using a rooted S8 on renovate ice r155, with the latest AIO gestures & Tasker.
I highly recommend using MiXplorer as a root explorer, you will need one for this. Basic knowledge on using tasker will help too.
Thanks to redplate, j91co & kuaka as I've pieced together their help in order to make this work on my phone.
Links to threads here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/how-to/root-remap-bixby-button-o-app-t3601061/page10
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-active/how-to/how-to-tasker-to-assign-flashlight-t3396760
So I have made a little tutorial on how to re-assign the key; this must be done manually and does not require an app for anything other than more extensive actions.
Therefore there are two parts to this: manually re-assign the key, and linking the key to all in one gestures.
Re-assign the key:
(1) Open a root explorer, and navigate to root: /system/usr/keylayout
(2) Copy generic.kl and rename the copy to generic.kl.bak
(3) Open generic.kl and edit as text; either rename to .txt and revert back or use MiXplorer to edit directly
(4) Find '703'; it should look like # input_fw Intelligent Key for Dream key 703 WAKE (or 'WINK' depending on device version, its ok)
(5) Simply rename the entry in capitals, for example WINK to VOLUME_DOWN
(6) Save the file, reboot.
(7) If any issues, restore the backup.
Link to AIO Gestures & Tasker
For this example I'm going to show you how to use AIO gestures with Tasker to toggle the flashlight with the bixby key.
(1) Manually re assign the key as shown in the first part: use something not commonly used. I used the function DVR. Save & reboot after changing this.
(2) Download tasker & AIO gestures. Grant root permissions and accessibility permissions in settings.
(3) Open AIO gestures and go to the hard keys section; 3 dots in top corner > custom keys
(4) Press bixby, it should display what you assigned it to. In my case it showed DVR. Press add.
(5) It will now be shown in the list of hard keys. Press it once to open the menu. You can choose anything you like, im going to assign it to a tasker shortcut:
(6) Swipe to the 'shortcut' section and scroll down to task shortcut
(7) Add a new task, and filter for 'torch'. Set ' toggle'. Press back, and again.
You should now have your bixby key bound to flashlight. I've tested this and it works from the AOD too. Enjoy, and please give credit to the great oaks who figured this all out cus im a flop and couldn't have done it without them
Of course if you know how to use tasker and stuff you can do whatever you want with this, take full advantage of that button! F#ck samsung for forcing the stain bixby is into our devices.
by is on us.
I haven't tested myself, but apparently this method also works with all of the bixby apps removed.
If somebody would like to incorporate this into an app, that'd be mad and you'd be a legend for doing so.
Here is a list of some actions I have accumulated from some threads you can assign to the key:
VOLUME_DOWN
VOLUME_UP
HOME
POWER - Power menu
MUSIC - starts your favorite music player
CAMERA - Open camera
APP_SWITCH - App switcher
VOICE_ASSIST - Google Assistant
SYSRQ - Take screenshot
CALENDAR - Open default calendar
CONTACTS - default contacts
MESSAGE - Default messenger

I guess you have never heard of the BxActions app, on xda and the play store... Remapping of Bixby button, without root even. Works great
I've used all those apps and each of them have a quirk where it flashes open for a short time, or sends you back to the home screen. In my opinion it's not an elegant solution and just isn't fluid enough, this way bixby doesn't show up at all and it works from everywhere.

Interesting, always used a free version and had some sort of quirk. Maybe it's improved since I last used it like the other week, but it never blocked bixby properly.
Whilst it's a nice app, you're also heaps limited to what you can assign the key too so bringing tasker to the table gives you pretty much endless possibilities.
Maybe the Devs will see this thread and incorporate this into their app for free....
Yeah, a recent BxActions update made it so Bixby doesn't come up anymore. There is an extra one-time step to take with the PC (don't need adb or anything special), but it's super easy, doesn't install anything extra, steps you through it, and takes all of about 30 seconds. It has just about every option I can think of for reassigning the button, including ability to customize actions for a long press or a double press of the button. It's come a long way even in the last few weeks in my opinion.
Although, it's nice to have options, that's what I love about Android. I just thought I'd present another option in case it wasn't known, so thanks for your post!!
Cheers for that, I had no clue they had fixed up all the blocking stuff, I'd love to check it out but I've completely removed bixby in favor for rebinding it lol. Still, that's mad that the dev has sorted it all out without the need for even adb or root; I might check it out as some point as the only thing limiting me currently I'm not sure how to configure it for double and long presses, could be my lack of knowledge with tasker, I'm still learning all this stuff.
Does BxActions have tasker support?
Anyway cheers for letting me know, it's a communal effort to get rid of Bixby

I recommend Button Mapper (from XDA developer flar2) from the play store. It can remap every key, and you can assign actions for press, double press and long press, too. It also has a long list of actions you can assign to the buttons. More, it doesn't need Tasker to be installed.
It has rooted and rootless mode; in rooted mode you can launch the actions even without unlocking the phone. It is very smooth and light, it doesn't flash the screen when Bixby button is pressed.

BxActions does all that and more apparently, as BxActions will let you launch the actions with the phone locked, even without root... Also doesn't need tasker, is smooth, light, and doesn't flash Bixby, and does single, double, and long presses, and is also from an XDA dev...
Wait, just realized you said "remap every key", as in remapping of volume keys as well? If so, that's kind of cool, even though I don't need that for anything...

Thanks! I'll check it out.
I've checked out using button mapper as an alternative, and discovered only the volume keys work with the display off / device locked. Whilst it is more usefull than aio guestures, it completely defeats the purpose of having an easy to access flashlight key, considering I'd have to unlock my phone. Found that bixby actions doesn't work at all now due to remapping the key (plus im too much of a stinge to pay for long / double press, everyone with an S8 should have had this from the factory but I see nothing wrong with charging for hard work).
Found a new thread describing a method using 'Xposed edge' (pro ver here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jozein.xedgepro&hl=en, free one too) that supposedly does all these things plus double press, through using xposed, however im a bit skeptical using this as a solution due to the current state of xposed atm.
If anyone else knows a great tool that can remap CUSTOM keys, from anywhere (aod, lockscreen, home, in app), that supports long, double and single presses I would be forever grateful.
Whilst BxActions seems like the best solution to remove bixby (from the perspective of all users) at this point in time, I've just glanced through it to find a lack of tasker support (guess you could build your own tasker app and launch it but that's trek and a dirty solution), but cheers to jawomo for his effort with this and everyone else who's contributed.
I checked out button mapper, but still prefer BxActions since it works with the lock screen without root... Nice there are so many options...
I agree that it shouldn't be needed and we shouldn't have Bixby forced upon us when we pay as much for a phone as we did (or are)...
Thanks for this. Anyone know of a way to get it to work with the screen off? It works with the always-on display, but not if that's disabled and the screen is off.
Also, I'll warn everyone else not to do what I did on my first attempt. I used Total Commander to copy generic.kl to a non-root folder, made my changes there with TC Edit (part of Total Commander, but it can't get root access to edit system files directly), deleted the original generic.kl, then moved the edited version back to /system/usr/keylayout. I don't know why this didn't work, but after a reboot I was unable to use any keys at all - not the Bixby button, not the power button, even the on-screen keyboard refused to appear. I could unlock the phone with the fingerprint scanner and open apps, but I couldn't restore my generic.kl.bak since I couldn't delete the .bak part with no keyboard. Thankfully I had a very fresh system backup I could restore, though I'm sure I could have also renamed the .bak file with ADB. I tried again, this time editing generic.kl directly with ES File Explorer (instead of using Total Commander to edit a copy) and it worked as it's supposed to.

Ok, after joining your beta program I've now gotten it to tell me the Bixby button is disabled. But then I go to enable remapping the button but it won't stick. I exit out of the buttons menu and then go back and remapping is again disabled. Hmmmmmm

This app caused AOD to stop working for me. Anyone else see this issue?

I can confirm this to be true. A reset makes AOD work again. It works again for a while but then stops again after a while.
Everyone new to BxActions should get the Pro version. The speed it provides, not to mention the extra remap options, are more than worth it.

Would you happen to be the developer? The pro version or connecting it to a pc also lets you use a double and triple press action with the app.

I haven't noticed an option for triple presses.
Holy permissions.
Up to now I was using bxActions to remap the bixby button (single press).
I just upgraded to Pie and now the single press remap does not seem to work.
Bixby single press always shows the message 'Hold the bixbutton to start bixby.'
A remap on the long press still works and launches the requested application.
Is there a way to remap the single press on bixby in Android Pie?

I think you must disable bixby home or bixby sthg. using ADB method and then restart app or reboot.
Tried this on an S9+ with Lineage OS and there's no permssions available for the bixby button when the app asks for it, only the volume buttons....
What's the problem?

The Bixby Button - Should it stay, or die?

Hi everyone,
Really interested in people's thoughts on the Bixby Button.
Initially I hated it, but after a) accidentally pressing it less since thanks to muscle memory, and more importantly b) the ability to make it do anything other than launch Bixby (such as double press for Google Assistant, long press for flashlight) I have found myself appreciating the existence of this extra button. So much so in fact, that speculation it could be removed in the Galaxy S10 have kind of dissapointed me.
So what do you think? Should the Bixby button stay, or should it be removed? Vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comments!
It needs to go. Just go away.
If you could natively remap the button to whatever you choose, that would be great, but in the stock incarnation its terrible. Just horrible.
I disabled all of packages related to Bixby. In turn, it disabled the button.
The only thing it ever did for me was get accidentally hit and bumped.
die and move the volume buttons lower, until then I'm using bixby remapper as a screenshot, play/pause, skip and previous tracks shortcuts

Which remapper are you using?
I'm using ButtonMapper by flar2.
Single tap: nothing
Double tap: Google Assistant
Long Press: Flashlight
I'm finding that it adds value to me (only in the scenario remapping tools exist) and id rather see it kept around.
Bixby
The Bixby button is nothing more than a bloody nuisance.
I accidently activated it so many times that I turned Bixby feature off. I hope Samsung are reading this.
Cheers
Aussie
I remap it using bxactions.
Single: Google Now
Double: Samsung Pay
Hold: Google Assistant
Samsung just needs to admit that Bixby is a failure. It was a cool concept with the S8, but they took WAY too long to fully release it, and when they did, it was pretty terrible. Hell, I'd rather use Cortana than Bixby, and that's saying something...
Neither, I'd just like them to offer us the option to switch it to Google Assistant

bxactions from Jawomo, I paid for the pro version.
Bixby is good for in Phone stuff. But they should give us the option to remap it.
Those who say it should go away: If it was a Google Assistant button, would you feel the same way? It looks like the LG 7 will have a dedicated assistant button, and the Pixel XL2 has a dedicated "squeeze" action for Assistant, and no one complains about that.
I don't use Bixby, but by using a 3rd party app to use the Bixby button for other things I believe it's fairly useful.
Bixby Button Remapper works great. Just press it and Google Now opens up. It is fine for me.

Maybe someone can help me here.
I have a problem when I disable the Bixby button and press again comes the message from Samsung Reminder.
I really do not know how to turn it off and hope someone here can help me.

Haven't heard of this one, on the bright side, it's still more useful than Bixby
You could try Button Mapper (made by @flar2) to see if it could help you set single press = nothing.
Uncustomisable Bixby button is the worst thing a smartphone can have and it's death is a must, and it should not be even remembered as a nightmare post its demise. Only if Samsung gives "full freedom" to customize, it should be considered.
