[ROM][PX3][RK3188][NOUGAT][7.1.2] Cannot root or install Malaysk ROM - MTCD Software Development

Hi all
I have, without success, tried to install Malaysk ROM on my Eonon GA8198 Headunit.
I have tried the following:
Install the ROM directly from USB
RESULT: The install procedure seems to start, but after a short while it stops with a simple "error" message on screen.
ROOT by entering the code *#hct#root#
RESULT: I get a message saying "Wrong password" (other codes like m123456 works)
Can anyone help me in the right direction, so I can install a new ROM?

Try redownloading the rom, make sure you have the drive setup correctly, both the format of the drive and the folder hierarchy.
all the decent custom roms already have root I'd focus on getting one working. THere is no reason you shouldnt be able to flash a new rom

I'm not quite sure about the correct hierarchy on the USB. I have placed the mtc-launcher.ini file and the nupdate.img file at the root of the USB. I also placed the .ini file in the root of the internal flash. Which one is correct?
Do you know if there's a list with custom ROM's for my unit here in this forum? Have tried to search, but it doesn't give me anithing useful.

Try this rom instead it uses an sd card to create a bootable recovery then install the room from the root of the usb.

[q] asus t101 restore from image help

Thought I backed up original ROM, when I opened the file today it was blank (NVFLASH).
I did copy the internal sd and have a copy of that but its not the right file type.
I also have some image files of the ROM, can I use either of these?
How about a little more information.... what file did you open that was blank?
Do you have files that look like 09_APP_raw.img? Did you use a script or just type a bunch of stuff in at the command line?
How did you copy the internal SD card that it is not the right file type?
What are these image files of the ROM?
So many questions...
The way I copied the internal sd was in the file manager, had to click show hidden files to do it.
The blank file was a file that brk asus transformer root toolkit made. Went to do a restore with it the next day and file not found,
The image files I have are ones that another version cwm m ade doing a backup a few times that I got from the market. But that version of cwm doesnt support asus.
OK- it that helps. If you just want the stock firmware, you can get that from the ASUS website. You might have to get the 8.6.5.9 version and then upgrade to 8.6.5.13 via the ota. From there you can root again and/or install CWM if you want.
There are TF specific versions of CWM- solarnz and roach each have a version in the dev section. These might allow you to flash the data partition from your backups to restore any apps that you installed. I think brk's tool uses one of the modded versions of CWM.
As far as the internal sd card, you might have to copy those over with an external SD card/adb/ftp/etc.
If you want to restore one of the CMW images you have, that might be tricky, but you can extract them with the unyaffs tool. Google should find it for you. They might be flashable with one of the modded versions of CWM, but I think the modded versions have a slight difference in the parts that they backup/restore. You can try the "advanced restore" option to restore the data.img, but I'm not sure what would happen.
I looked at asus website for the rom, all I found were firmware and kernels are those the roms? I would prefer doing it that way.
Yup- select the android OS and pick your country specific firmware (aka ROM).
It might be tricky if you are downgrading I.e., you flashed 8.6.5.13 and want to flash the stock 8.6.5.9 firmware. I'm not sure if you can downgrade the "easy" way.
The easy way is to unzip the firmware and place the whole ASUS folder on your external SD card. Turn on the TF and insert the SD card when it is running- a notification should pop up to flash. ASUS has some documentation with pictures in the Manuals section. Look for one of the "Update SOP" files.
Let me know if that works. I've never tried to downgrade that way, so I'm not sure if it will work because you might be on a higher build number. If it doesn't, there is another way if you are rooted or you can use nvflash.
Let me get this right, do I use the firmwaree or the kernel.
Use the firmware.
Thanks, I reread the firmware aka rom. I'm in the us so the us one right! Will let you know if it works, says something about downgrading in there...
If it won't let you downgrade, then you have to do it the "hard" way.... but you have to be rooted.
Download the firmware and unzip it. It should be something like ASUS/Update/some.zip
Unzip the some.zip file and it'll contain a blob. Copy the blob to your external sd card or use adb to push it to your TF.
It would be a good idea to verify the MD5 sum of the blob. The US one that I downloaded for 8.6.5.9 is
MD5(blob)= 57d4c4342277d39e523e26b943891a1f
Use terminal on the TF or adb shell from your PC and type the following:
Code:
su
dd if=/Removable/MicroSD/blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
the last three characters are zero-pee-four. It's important to get this right or you could mess up your TF.
If you copied it somewhere else, then adjust the /Removable/MicroSD/blob part.
It will take a while because it's a big file, but when it's done, type "reboot" or just turn off, then turn on your TF, and it will flash you back to stock. You should see a blue progress bar that moves very slowly. Be patient, it takes a while and should reboot when it's done. You will be unrooted with a stock recovery at this point.
Afterwards, you can verify that you have the downgraded firmware and then check updates to receive the OTA to upgrade to 8.6.5.13. Lastly, clean up and remove the blob file from your sdcard- it's 521MB!
Your awsome man! You took all that time to help me out and I won't forget it gee!
So did the downgrade work, or did you have to flash the blob?
Not gonna try tonight, thats how I lost the backup as I was tired... Will try tomorrow and will let you know what workes.
I have prime on here now so I dont think that would technically be a downgrade?
Yes I am rooted.
So while I have you, will a rooted machine get OTA updates?
Yup, the updates still download, but they usually break root or won't flash because something is not stock, such as kernels.
Of course, you can mod them so they flash and keep root.
Good idea about starting fresh tomorrow.
r u Randal in Ca?
No, sorry.
No worries, just reminded me of the big guy. Will let you know how everything goes. I try to be sure before I comet to a change I can't recover from so will have to sus up everything first.
I want to thank you again for the help, I hope you get compensated for it?
Hardy har har, and I'm still in thi situation!
We will see tomorrow!

unable to downgrade from 2.3.4

I have a My Touch 4G currently running 2.3.4 that I want to downgrade to 2.2.1 so I can root it. I am unable to get it to take the PD15IMG.zip to take once I hit the bootloader. It says its extracting fine, but the phone never reboots and if I manual reboot it, it boots up on 2.3.4.
I was using the following instructions.. cyanomod instructions and I did everything fine but get stuck with step 8.
Here is a copy of my ABD session:
Open to any suggestions.. I did some searches but no luck.
I tried to paste the URLs for the pastebin and the instructions I used but was blocked because of the stupid spam rules for newbies.. so PM me and ill send them to you.
Also as you can see I have been a member for over a year now, I just do a lot of lurker so I don't post much. I usually can find my answer searching without asking but I am stumped on this one.
This exact same thing happened to me.
The problem was that ADB wasn't pushing the entire PD15IMG file to the SD card. Every time I tried it it was missing exactly 53 bytes. (You can check this by looking at the file size of the PD15IMG on your hard drive and see if it file size matched EXACTLY on your SD card down to the single byte.)
I fixed it my using the file manager on my computer to just drag and drop the PD15IMG file onto the SD card. For some reason that transferred the entire file without problem.
I ran through the steps again and viola, 2.2.1 upon reboot.
You might also have a corrupted PD15IMG file. You can fix that by re-downloading the file, preferably from a different source just in case.
why u need downgrade 2.2.1 ?
@skipjacks - ill try that, on the 2nd attempt at it yesterday I manually copied of the file over after I downloaded it from another source, yet it still would not upgrade. I will give it a 3rd shot and report back.
@Ridofu - I am tried of having the HTC offical software crashing on me. I would like to root and then install CM7.1
Same thing..
I downloaded PD15IMG.zip manually over the HTC E:\ drive I have mounted.. did all the commands again, went to bootloader, it says it installs but then never reboots or does anything...
the image say loading, and I see a blue bar on the right top corner... then it switches to checking with a yellow/orange bar in the right top corner..
then it just goes back to the main screen and doesn't do anything..
all i see is fastboot, recover, factory reset, simlock, image crc
Id love to run the adb shell md4sum /sdcard/PD15IMG.zip but everytime I run it it comes back with md5sum: not found
Any ideas?
How I rooted my MT4G
Try this guide:
http://androidrootking.blogspot.com/2011/10/how-to-root-your-mytouch-4g-original_12.html
This is a step-by-step guide to root your MT4G. It has a link to another guide that will help you downgrade your phone.
You must downgrade FIRST, in order to root, because the root tool (gfree) DOES NOT WORK with Android 2.3, it only works with 2.1.
If you really like GingerBread, and want to keep root, go here AFTER you're rooted:

Do you have MicroSD card reader in/for your PC?
Try to use it instead of copying the file through the phone.
@Ericm301 that is the exact method I have followed and it does not work. I have done the Push method, I have done the copy via USB cable to the E:\ drive that is mounted and neither allow me go to bootloader and load the file.
@Jack_R1 I will try getting a Micro usb adapter and copying the file over as well.
I tried taking the SD card and copying the file manually, I also tried to use the file from a 3rd source. It will not downgrade. I can post a video if you want to see it fail.
Just wanted to give a update. I did the manual downgrade 2 or 3 more times and I finally gave up on it.. then I switched to Fastboot Downgrade method and it worked perfectly the 1st time..
man what a frustration!

Can't root my Sensation- Please Help!

I have an HTC sensation z7z10a. I purchased this phone to be able to get on AT&T's 3&4g frequencies without having to upgrade my unlimited data plan for non smart phones. So far so good, my phone gets 4g and AT$T is not aware that I have a smartphone.
Naturally after spending enough time in XDA and other phone forums to figure this out I became interested in flashing a custom ROM.
I used the revolutionary method to gain S-OFF, installed CWM, and used CWM to create a backup image. I've managed to fully wipe and then restore to my backup image, so CWM is working.
My problem is whenever I go to flash a custom rom I don't understand which file to select in recovery mode. Every zip I have downloaded, (including the one I need to finally get my phone rooted) opens up to a series of subfolders, none of which contain the files I need. The sub folders are typically : System, Data and META-INF. So I can't get rooted without being able to use the recovery mode to flash.
I used my friend's pc netbook in order to run Revolutionary and install CWM. Now I am using my Macbook Pro to download potential Roms zip files and move them onto my phones SD card. Could this be the problem?
I"ve searched and searched for and answer to this issue to no avail, please help me to figure this out. I'm stumped.
The zip you have to flash is the ROM you download...am I missing something?
You do not need to extract the zip file. Just put it on the SD card and then go to the recovery mode and select the option install zip from sd card and install it. I believe if you flash a custom rom, you would be automatically rooted, so no need to root it separately. Hope this helped

Exactly- I don't understand why it won't work.

Thanks for this advice, this is my first time attempting this. I think you are right that most roms come with root access so I may be able to skip that step.
I know what you are saying, don't extract the file, just move the zip over as is. Only on my mac the files are arriving as a folder with subfolders, not a zip package. This HAS to be the problem! I will look harder for Mac info on downloaded zips to see if I can figure out why this is happening. Thanks again.
Update:
So I fixed the folder problem by going into safari settings and unchecking the open safe downloads box. No all the zip files I'm downloading are staying intact as zips.
However I just tried to flash revolution hd with no success. The full wipe zip for this rom was a failure as well. I will now try downloading the root zip again and see if rooting first helps at all.
So now I am rooted. Success!

Ah....Steve Jobs and his desire to prevent the user from doing anything useful strikes from beyond the grave.
This is why I won't touch a Mac. They want to do everything for you, even if it's not what you want or need to be done. On the plus side, at least you only have to push 1 button to get the Mac to do the wrong thing!
Glad you figured it out! Be careful with the ROM flashing though. It quickly becomes a life consuming obsession.

[Q] Installing Illusion Rom 2.6 S3

I'm pretty new at installing Roms and such, but I do have a successful install of the Illusion Rom 2.6 Beta on my phone. I tried to update, and I couldn't get the file to install.
I use ClockworkMod, and when I try to install the ZIP from my external SD, it tells me there's something wrong with the file. I have downloaded it multiple times, thinking maybe it was a corrupted copy I put on. Same results. (Now, I could be missing something, as the file is listed as a Grouper, and I'm not sure what that means.)
Any suggestions or info would be very helpful. Thank you!

As you wrote, the file may be corrupted during downlad. Why don't you check the MD5 ( check with google to learn how). Another reason that, the file may be something else than the required rom.

Sideload twrp backup?

So ive searched for an answer to this but couldnt find it with google/xda.
I tried to install a custom rom.
My first rom install attempt ever on android
It failed with a signal 11 error
So after lots of trouble shooting trying any "fix" I could find suggested.
I read wiping before a rom install was required.
So I made a twrp backup, placed it on my pc, this is where I messed up and nobody in the countless threads I read said
I deleted the twrp backup on device
Then wiped with twrp, following the era proper directions for device allegedly.
Which was wipe everything but internal storage, also read to format in the many topics I perused.
Then found everything was wiped, including /sdcard, and system/OS
WELL I STILL GOT SIGNAL 11 on rom flash attempt via sideload, since the zip got erased on sd.
I did manage to flash a rom, but wouldnt you know it, its a rom that cant connect to pc through usb.
If I try to push the twrp backup folder, it just says error in cmd while in sideload
Anybody know the proper way to do that? Or is it just a case of murphys law getting a right good laugh at my devices expense.
I did read I could use a micro usb to external storage to mount, but I lack that.
I need to restore twrp because I think I need to pull the vendor directory off device to try to overcome the signal 11 error.
Anyway any advice is appreciated and hopefully can serve others in the future.
Thanks and cheers
Re-flash Stock ROM.
Well I dont think the device in question has a stock rom. Or I cant find one at first glance.
I had to roll back the version to unlock bootloader and root.
But that .bin wouldnt help I think.. hmm
Back to the drawing board I guess.
Perks of a decade old device.
Apparently androidmtk.com has stock roms available, but is that site safe to use?
Sorry for my noobiness.
Edit: actually that bin is the stock firmware apparently. I hope at least.
Will try and report back.
Thanks jwoegerbauer
Edit2: that worked flashing the bin. Was able to mount on pc and add the backup back up.
Did have a stumble as without making a backup there wasnt a backups folder. I tried to manually create one, but twrp couldnt see the folder I made.
Not sure if it was the naming. I tried "Backups" but twrp created "BACKUPS"
I just backed up efs since it was smallest to get twrp to make it.
Cool. Now I can backup vendor for rom comparison. Was overstressed for half the day about it, but the solution was simple and right there in front of me.
Thanks again Jwoegerbauer
what do you mean "it's a rom that can't connect to pc through usb"?
what do you mean "was able to mount on pc"?
you have backup of old ROM on pc. what do you want to do with?
No worries alecxs
Yeah I was able to sideload a custom rom but that rom had broken/missing usb drivers so mtp on pc failed.
That was before I knew I had the stock rom.
I needed stock rom to be able to restore with twrp in order to pull vendor folder off original device.
(I need vendor folder to try to fix that broken custom rom)
Just me being a noob. Sorry again.
you're welcome. just asking for clarity.
you have answered one question, so let me give you hint on guesswork.
you can connect device with usb-debugging from developer options. adb is the recommended way to transfer files. MTP is a faulty implemented Microsoft protocol I wouldn't use for large amount of data (for small files is okay).
Android devices cannot mounted since Android 5.0.1 Lollipop as UMS has been dropped in favour of MTP. /sdcard is no longer separate FAT partition but emulated storage in /data/media.
Bear in mind TWRP backup does not include /data/media so one have to backup pictures manually. this can be done from adb.
Code:
adb pull -a /sdcard
For the same reason you will lose /sdcard every time you format /data.
If you're interested to restore backup to different ROM, you cannot use TWRP. backup of /data can only restored to the exact same ROM.
For restoring backup to different ROM use Migrate.
[APP][ROOT][5.0+][1st Nov 2020] Migrate - custom ROM migration tool
Jumping from one custom ROM to another can be a challenging task. So I decided to make an app to simplify the process. Introducing Migrate! Migrate-GPE (v4.0) is on Google Play It was temporarily suspended. Read more here...
