Low light - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Real Life Review

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S9+'s camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

These 2 photos were taken in dark factory yesterday with my 9+

I'll post some lathe pictures tomorrow (S9+) getting delivered tonight.

Taken at nighttime, no flash S9+

Sorry wrong thread
Someone pls delete

Some pictures taken at night; pretty impressed with the camera quality and clarity:

Finally we have a proof which one is better. Clearly S9+ has better cam than Google Pixel 2!
Pixel 2 eat your heart out. Finally!
THANK YOU from all XDA Members who had any doubt about which of these two phones to buy!!

Well to be fair I own both phones and they both have their strength and weaknesses. I prefer the google pixel 2 PICTURES right now however once GCAM gets ported to the S9 I think the advantage will 100% go to the galaxy. For now the video on the S9 is much better but if your into auto snapshots the pixel 2 still probably beats out in good lighting. Move to low light and of course the S9 just destroys the pixel 2.

Thats just my personal opinion. Also I believe this will change once gcam gets ported to the S9. Its all subjective and really depends on the situation but Id much prefer the S9 camera over the pixel 2 in 95% of the situations because #1 I care more about video and #2 the daytime shots are very similar and almost not noticable however once you get in low light the S9 really flexes its muscle for sure. The dynamic range on the pixel 2 IN PICTURES during the day definately is slightly better HOWEVER when it comes to video the S9 can pull off some pretty impressive dynamic range if you have the right app or if you edit the footage in post. I dont like how contrasty samsungs video is but luckily you can pull out a ton of detail from the shadows in an editing program if you need to.

After having the Pixel 2 XL and now the S9+, I prefer the camera on the S9+, because Pixel 2 XL processes the pics too much and they look unreal. They are just social network ready, but not natural at all, and it usually oversharps and put a lot of drama to the pictures. They look nice at first sight, but just try to zoom a little in details and you will notice the loss in detail and quality. In low light, Pixel is just noise and grain.
Anyway, I leave here a video I really liked and to say this guy made a great job comparing both cameras:

Very helpful video for the undecided ones!

UHD/60 is amazing.
Compared to my Note 8, well there is no comparison.
I'm talking low light. I can take video in a dark passageway and play it back and see more than my eyes can AND it's not a snowy, grainy mess!
That's impressive indeed!

Seriously You can see MORE with S9+ than with your naked eyes? Do You use flashlight when looking at dark areas with S9+?
I'm SHOCKED. This is quite amazing and quite impossible.

Nope, when I look at video taken in a dark room I can make it more details than I can with my own eyes.
My eyes are good in the dark, all I need is a single 3 lumen night light to walk around in a 400 ft^2 room. Just as a security camera night (IR) mode can reveal details, it's far inferior to a brightly lit room. Our eyes work the same way. The image processing is amazing that it can reduce noise reasonably well and preserve color balance. Non of my other devices can do this.

So it's final then, S9+ broke all barriers for smartphone cameras. It's the best in the world. No doubt about it. Iphone X and Pixel 2 can not hold a candle to S9+
Congrats to Samsung!

Well let's put it this way. I have an iPhone X. I use it for work and Apple dev projects. I like it a lot. It's the best iPhone I've owned. And I preferred it over my Note 8 for video based on the fact that it can do UHD at 60fps. It still has issues with AF hunting though. I have not tested the 9+ to see how it fares in that department. In the dark, however, off come the kids gloves. Video is the best I've seen. I also use Filmic Pro and ProCam on the X to get the best out of the hardware. Tough to beat physics with f 1.5. The processing helps too. SEC does need to work on the glare problems, however. And given such a small lens aperture I suppose reflections are just impossible to avoid (inter element reflections). Take video of a bright light on the ceiling or at a concert with multiple points of bright light, you will see.
As for the Pixel phones, my last Google device was the Nexus 6. Loved the dev on that phone but its time has come and gone. Hated the aesthetics of the Pixel series. The N6 had a great camera but horrible software. I don't care for TW but SEC got it right on the camera software out of the box. Ever since the S6E+. I wish they would move back to a 16MP sensor though. Shooting RAW in pro mode yielded some incredible shots that are hard to get today still.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Huawei Nexus 6P come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
One of the best mobile cameras. Color saturation, ease of focusing, and HDR is all excellent.
Surprisingly very good! The Moto X Pure was good, but this has crisper images. The OnePlus2 was OK, but the images were "smudgy" in the background.
The nexus 6p takes great pictures. I love it and the double power button push to open camera really does work and its quick.
Great so far, nice upgrade from the stock S5 camera. Low light images look better and apps like ProShot giving us manual controls can be quite handy.
The video is very crisp too!
To be honest it's not bad at all. It's up there for sure but for sure not no1. Happy with mine
I guess since I came back to the Nexus line from the S6, I have to say I'm disappointed. My expectations weren't too high though, so I'm not overly disappointed. I got used to, and liked the S6's 16X9 pics. I like how they filled up the S6's display. I'm trying to get used to the N6P's 4X3 pics. I can positively say that low-light pics are nowhere near as good as Google would have one believe they'd be. Period. As long as the lighting is good, the pics will be as well.
Of course, a lesser camera is still worth coming back to the Nexus. So overall I'm happy.
I'm blown away by the quality of the camera!
Coming from an HTC one m8, the photo quality is amazing on the 6P. I'm not used to the amazing quality but I love it!

I would prefer a Lumia, but since there is a lack of apps on Windows Mobile... 6P.
Pictures seem very good., but the white balance when using the flash has a slight green tint compared to the 5X. I noticed this last night and was also mentioned in this article: http://pocketnow.com/2015/10/19/google-nexus-5x-vs-6p-video
"If you’re really looking for a consistent difference here, maybe try to spot the green tint in a few of the 6P’s photos, which for some reason becomes more pronounced when using the flash."
I've attached pictures for comparison. First image is with the 6P and the second is with the 5X. Hopefully this will get fixed in a future software update.
In my testing I am seeing better indoor photos than outdoors in even lighting. Outdoor photos tend to produce darker images against bright backgrounds (sky). If I move the focus to the subject, it compensates the brightness for the subject but then sky is blown out. This is without using HDR+. With HDR+, photos are evenly lit but still on the darker side. Images,. however, are very sharp and capture excellent details. I have a Note 4 too. I would say that Note 4 has a better camera than Nexus 6P. So in my opinion Nexus 6P is good but not excellent.
Coming from a Nexus 6 I'm loving the quality of this camera. However in HDR mode trying to take pictures of my children is pretty difficult. It's quite a bit slower in this mode

I have to agree with you. I had the S6 and I loved the form factor and the camera. I hated the S6 because my wife would always use my phone for photos. She actually used more of my photo storage than I did. I thought the 6p camera was suppose to be on party with the S6 . I have to say some photos of the photos are good but with the S6 I never had a bad photo.
I just hated that the S6 updates would take forever. I know that with Verizon, Marshmallow will not be available until March/April 2016. I went with the 6p cause I could keep Verizon and will always get timely updates. Also I didn't want to have to worry about rooting a phone for it to be functional.

S7 and S7 edge vs S6 (First proper camera review by hardwarezone)

http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feature-samsung-galaxy-s7-vs-galaxy-s6-who-takes-better-photos
After days of waiting, we finally have another detailed camera review. While the article does not go into pixel peeping depth, it gives a good idea of how the camera perform against its predecessor. It seems like the s7 handles contrasts and low light( of course) much better.
Hopefully will bring peace to people worried about S7 camera underperforming...
Interesting and thanks for the link. Seems to be very competent camera.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Thanks for the link. I think I'm convinced the S7 is better in low light. The concern is whether it's taken a sacrifice in brighter conditions - would be good to see some daylight photos from people getting their phones this week
This really should quieten down the people claiming the S6 has a better camera, and that Samsung have taken a step backwards. The outdoor contrast and street at night pictures in particular were hilariously one-sided.
In my opinion S6 has the advantage , In day time, S6 photos is obvious better than s7 with more vivid colors. During sunset and night , the photos is almost identical with only iexception the night street scene ,which s7 was better.
I would like to see a real life comporison too , because most of us , we usually take photos of our friends and not static buildings in the night.

One of us may need to calibrate our displays, because the S7 has a clear advantage to me. I notice a lot of the reds on the S6 seem to wash out and look pink (like the pic looking up the steps with the red box on the side).
I dunno, I think I'd rather go with the S6 and it's 4 megapixel advantage.
You need to read up on why that isn't necessarily an advantage when it comes to quality of image.

Don't worry, I did that many moons ago.
For what mobile phone cameras are used for, the difference between 16mpx and 12 mpx is nothing. That extra 4pmx has no practical advantage bar the aspect ratio. I'd sooner have an increase in quality and a reduction in size.

Obviously you didn't bother reading the author's notes. In almost all cases they noted that the S7 was producing more accurate colors, and the S6 was producing tones that were not true to what the scene actually looked like.
If your idea of a superior camera is one which produces overly saturated images at the expense of color accuracy (similar to the issue samsung's older AMOLED displays had), then stick with the S6.
For the rest of us, accuracy is the sign of a better camera. Saturation can easily be adjusted to taste in post (especially with the S7's raw support). It's much harder to fix incorrect colors after the fact going off of memory. The S6 also struggled in high-constrast scenes. There were several instances where certain parts of the image were blown out because the S6 couldn't keep up with the wide range of the scene.

So when you look at photos 6 and 9 for example you don't see a quality difference. OK.
There seems to be a slight difference between the two. With the S7 just barely edging out the S6... The camera should not be the big reason to get the S7 (even though i am getting the S7)...
I saw this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD_2udbnsLg and it looks like slow motion video is also better... I noticed on my S6 when i do slow motion, the scene become much darker, the S7 doesnt seem to have that issue...

This +1. My S7E should be here tomorrow also.
My personal opinion and this applies only to me so your mileage may vary - The S6 camera is beyond fantastic, I regularly have amateur photographer friends who ask me what camera I use because my images are excellent (I have an S6E). So, If even if the S7 camera was the *same* as the S6, the S7 is a winner, considering ALL the other improvements they made to the phone. I was worried they would take a step backwards with the slim camera module, and I wasn't really expecting any major camera improvements. But it does seem the S7 camera is slightly better than the S6, which in my mind is a bonus.
And keep in mind all this is before software updates. If you remember the early S6 days, there were 2 if not 3 software updates within the first few months that all had slight camera improvements. I remember there was an update even when I first powered on the phone from tmobile.

That's generally those that have the S6 either in contract and cannot yet upgrade and therefore find their own ways to bash it. Happens all the time with new flagships.
Some even pretend they are getting the S7 to try and validate their claim. Very sad in my opinion.

agree the "slightly better" come too much in this review... especially with this kind of px drop (16 => 12)
To be honest if the S7 camera is just as good as the S6 I'm golden. I actually don't take too many pictures right now.
Every single one of them looks a little better to me in varying degrees.

Samy camera disapointing?

I dont know if other users agree with me but my old Nexus6P was way better on low light conditions. In outdoor situations at a sunny day there is no problem, with most phones but the S8+ has a really good camera but if i try to take a picture when the sun has set and the light is low the software makes the pictures really fuzzy. The faces are washed out (i am aware that the software is trying to reduce the noise) and its not that great at auto mode. I took great low light pictures with the manual mode and this is something missing on the nexus 6p and pixels but if i want to take a quick picture at low light i cant start setting up the manual mode i just want to take a quick photo. So at this point my question is, is there any way to install the google photo apk with the hdr+ mode? I dont really know if something like this would work or if its even possible, but i really miss the hdr+ from the google phone.
I attached some examples.
Photo 1 is S8+ selfie in low light
Photo 2 is N6P selfie in even lower light
Photo 3 is S8+ rear shooter in low light
Photo 4 is N6P rear shooter in lower light
Thank you everyone in advance
I also came from the 6p and gotta admit I was totally amazed with the 6p's camera in both low light and day time shooting. I still have not taken much pictures with my s8 plus yet, so I can't really compare the difference in an night out experience, but hope to soon. From around the house shooting the camera seems good, I want to say slightly better than the 6p in low light. I really like the zero shutter lag of the s8 though, even though I had the ZSL mod on the 6p. Your pictures do look pretty fuzzy and not clear on the s8 though. Probably a dumb question, but it's your camera lens clean?

Switch to manual mode and the playing field changes dramatically.
Never had the 6P but I have the Nexus6 and I must say for a phone going on 3 years old it still has a nice shooter (using an app called Manual Camera).
Semi pro skill set with photography here, never liked auto anything.
Your pictures look exactly like mine and I too am disappointed with the S8+ auto Camera shooting. I am coming from a LG G4 and my pictures were amazing on that camera. I would frame them people were shocked they were from a camera phone. My S8+ does great in bright sunny light, but in side/low lighting conditions the pictures are very washed out/lack detail.
I'm also feeling the same. The auto settings are so shonky, my LG G3 had better auto settings. When there's proper lighting it's crisp as anything, also with the flash. When it's low light like this, mine look exactly the same, it's like they have the skin smoothing on the selfie camera but for everything... Also!!!! I've noticed that there still seems to be a bit of grain / not so sharp even in light. I really do feel like my G3 produced better images. Haven't played with manual but like... I feel like I shouldn't have to. Auto should be banging!
I'd have to agree. My iPhone 7 plus beats this camera when it comes to quickness, ease of use, and consistency. Not too impressed.

as i said earlier the manual mode is better but you cant tell people or friends "wait let me set it up" so i can take 1 picture. the point of the auto mode is to take quick good picture. You are totaly right about the manual mode, ive taken very very good pictures with it but its not fast to set it up, eventualy you will lose the moment
Iphone camara sucks, buy tk each their own. Maybe i got a good S8+.

Try taking the SAME shot with both phones. Can't say much looking at totally different shots. I do notice the S8+ tends to overexpose a little bit. So if you were shooting in the dark, it would try to get a brighter exposure resulting in a higher ISO and lower quality images.

Exactly trying to compare totally different pictures taken in different places under different conditions is pointless.
I had a 6P for a long time and it had the best camera of any nexus device by light years but just doesnt compare to the S8 camera.
I had a note 5 at the same time as the 6P and the note 5 camera eas better than the 6P so....

as i said earlier the manual mode is better but you cant tell people or friends "wait let me set it up" so i can take 1 picture. the point of the auto mode is to take quick good picture. You are totaly right about the manual mode, ive taken very very good pictures with it but its not fast to set it up, eventualy you will lose the moment

As they aim to replace the traditional point-and-shoot camera, it would be nice to have similar pre-set manual mode settings remembered. Then you could set up your perfect "in the pub with mates" manual settings and switch to it quickly without all the sillybuggers of camera phone manual mode faff.
Edit: As an afterthought, what you could do is utilise an app I use called SyncMe. What this does is automatically copy all new photos from my phone to a specified folder on my NAS every day when I connect to my home network and plug in a charger. You simply set the phone to take RAW, and add a filter to this rule to MOVE (instead of copy) any RAW file extensions so your phone doesn't fill up.
Then, if you ever find yourself wanting a nice photo of a night out but the Jpeg is bad, you can hop onto your network and find the RAW equivalent and get editing.
Use pro mode for low light. The higher the iso, the brighter the picture but will leave your photo more grainy.
The lower the shutter speed, the brighter your photo but will require a steady hand or a tripod, and a still target.
Combine these with some editing.

I loved my G4 camera as well until the phone bootlopped.

This is what I get Everytime I try to take a shot indoor. Little movement and the photo comes out very blurry. I don't get why reviewers didn't notice this. Wasn't getting this result in the 6P.

I've also come from IPhone 7+ and that camera seemed so good compared to this but the s7edge camera seemed the best I've seen but this doesn't seem as good as them
In poor lighting so everyone will take pictures, in general a normal camera

Have you tried to use Tracking AF? Also try lock the focus on the subject and then let it move and take the picture and see if its still blurry not sure but you might have defective camera sensor

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Samsung Galaxy S8 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I can not notice that the camera especially selfie is not so good !I have to take 4 or 5 photos to have a bright picture and the main camera is also not so good!Maybe the only disadvantage for me overall
yes, i am surprised at the quality of the front camera. "pathetic" is the word i would use.
oneplus 3 and 5 both have an amazing front camera.
shame on you, samsung. it's amazing that with so many loyal customers you would cut corners on this.
rear camera is top-notch, though!

Just switched from the G6. Now that was a ****ty front camera
S8 produces in auto mode the best combination of good light and low light shots. In good light, there is a bit over-sharpening going on but no so much to destroy the photo quality. The handling of exposure is very good , the detail also and the colors are rich. At low light shots , S8 is the king with clear improvement over the S7/S7 edge. Better detail, low noise levels, more accurate colors, better handling of light flares. My only complaint is that in the evening light, the S8 camera gives more light that is needed. If for example you take a shot of the sky at 20:00 it will appear as it was taken one hour earlier at 19:00. In general there is no phone out there that can beat S8 at the triple combination of design+display+camera in auto mode. I am always talking about the rear camera. I never use the front camera on my phones ( i hate the trend of selfies ).
Back camera produces nice colors but the quality, or sharpness/details level is downright bad.
Coming from Pixel is maybe putting the bar high but the rear camera here is just bad.

Quick tip, go into pro mode, and change nothing other then -0.2 exposure, (during day) and iso around 150-500 for low light, you will be amazed.

You can even try -0.3 depending on how much light there is, in sunlight even 0.3 is great and balances the very bright scenes, and gets you alot detail in overexposed areas.

That depends from what you think is low light. If there is a direct light source pointed in the phone, like some store window or similar Pixel will be better. In real low light, S9 destroy Pixel.

In daylight, Pixel 2 XL will process the image nicer than S9+, but many times this processing makes look the pictures unreal and artificial. A lot of contrast and drama make the photos look "better" to most people.
S9+ will take more natural pics, they are not that crispy to the eye, but the colors and the scene will look more like real life.
In low light, Pixel 2 tends to be really noisy, both in photo and video, but is even more noticeable in video; Google processing tends to raise a lot the ISO, thus you have a lot of noise and artifacting.
S9+ has a better and clearer image in low light conditions hand down, and it prevail color and details better.
Depends on what kind of person you are: want natural photos?, you like to play with the pro mode?, go with the S9+; want crispy "social network ready" pics?, want just to point and shoot?, go with the Pixel 2 XL.
I prefer more natural and cleaner images, because I can put contrast and color after, but on the other hand, I can't make the noise and the graininess disappear from images in the Pixel 2 XL. Besides this, with S9+ you get a proper manual mode, which is really handy in some situations, so that's why I'm sticking with the S9+.
Is just a matter of personal taste and approach to the camera.
I've used both the Note 8 and the Pixel 2xl. I miss the camera on the note. It doesn't matter the conditions. The Pixel 2 takes grainy pics. I think the older pixel had a better camera.

I don't know why everyone rate the Pixel 2 XL as the best camera in low light if the pics and videos look grainy and full of noise.
Even in medium light conditions, Pixel 2 XL processing is noisy.

I don't get this.
I owned a note 8 briefly, and I had to return it because I thought the camera was so bad. At the time I wanted something bigger than my norm pixel 2.
I did many side by side photos, and there wasn't even one scenario where the note 8 would beat the pixel 2. Dynamic range and HDR were so on point. I'd often find my note 8 would over expose or blow anything with a backlight out, and at night time photos would be a pastel, cartoons mess.
The s9 is a better challenger because of the image stacking on the dram, so after shooting photos this weekend you can see how strong it is in HDR and dynamic range.
I'm really pleased with it.
My biggest complaint is I still think the live focus mode is as poorly executed as the note 8. In anything but remotely good lighting it looks horrendous - which baffles me consider an iPhone 8 plus can do just fine. The image is also very soft and tends to blow out the recipients face.. the good news, is providing Samsung recognises this, they can tweak it and make it really good.

I don't get this either, you are the first person I have ever read saying that Note 8 camera is bad.
Is true that dynamic range in Pixel 2 is crazy, no discussion about that, but the HDR and sharpening make the photos look artificial and unreal in many cases. Even people sometimes look weird because of the contrast and saturation that Pixel 2 puts in the photos. This makes the pictures more appealing to the eye of course, and it can give a false impression of a "better picture", but is only when you see carefully and in detail that sometimes is too much processing.
Overall in daylight conditions, the Pixel 2 and the S9+ can take similar pictures, but is in low light when the game changes in S9+ favor.
Anyway, if you want pictures Pixel 2 style, just install the GCam or improve the picture in Google Photos, which gives a similar result.
I prefer more natural pictures even when they seem softer compared to the Pixel 2, but maybe you prefer the approach on the Pixel 2.

Interesting how two people can view the same thing but have two really different opinions! Haha.
I do agree somewhat in what you say about the pixel 2 over processing with the saturation and contrast on faces, they can look really odd.
I do think the overall s9+ camera when you factor everything in, is better than the pixel 2.
But going back to the note 8, which was my original point, I always found it blew out my images, over exposing them, and the HDR didn't seem particularly good either - the s9 seems to have fixed this issue.
If they fix the live focus/portrait shots, then I wouldn't really have any qualms - reason why it bothers me is on my pixel 2 I have taken the odd portrait shot which genuinely can be so good they look pro (unless you pixel peep, which I don't).
All round an excellent camera, and the s9, in my opinion, just seems so much better than my note 8

Also add the front facing camera which somehow produces those soft images that lack in detail as compared to the pixel 2 even in low light considering the pixel 2 camera is f2.4 while s9 is f1.7

Yes, front facing camera is better on the Pixel 2, no questions about it.
I just hope Samsung can fix this in future updates.
I think it's all easily fixable. Just depends whether Samsung want to!
I will be doing extensive tests from tomorrow, as I have both cameras. So far I have to say Pixel's algorithakes the photo looka bit better (sharpness, micro contrast etc), however it's a bit more noisy as well. S9 camera has a huge potential, but Google camera app is just better. And the portrait mode on pixel blows everything out of the water.

Yes, but I'm trying to find the one that will actually work. All of them seem to either force close or have a black screen.

Yes, I'm sure, and i'm looking in my 50" 4K screen and of course I see every detail difference.
You are right in what you say, about the eyebrows and also I noticed in the hair, Samsung with this camera is softening the pictures a little with the processing, but still color retention and noise reduction are better in the S9, and even detail in textures and some other things:

Is true that Samsung softens things, but Pixel in my opinion do the other way around and it applies too much oversharpening sometimes and the pic look unreal.
Anyway, is just a matter of what you prefer and what processing approach suits you.

The problem is, i focused on my daughter's face not on my bedsheet..
And no, my daughter's skin tone is not that red. I'll be worried sick if my daughter's skin is that red.
I'm comparing both at my professionally calibrated monitor (i work in film industry). The skin tone on s9+ is not right.
You are right on some photos pixel processing a bit too much (hdr+), but in this particular photo, i believe that it is spot on. Will post more comparison pics mainly medium to low light photos.
On the smooth (s9+) vs grain (pixel 2 xl). As a film director, i always prefer fine grain over smooth. Fine grain retains sharpness, while noise reduction reduces it.
