HTC U11+ Battery Life Thread - HTC U11+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Feel free to share your best battery usage and screen on time in this thread.

I had the phone for a few days, and this is my phone after 2 days of use. Very impressive in my opinion.

That's a great one you got there mate. No doubt with its massive 3930 mah battery.

According to GSMarena battery life is average at best, they were quite disappointed with the results. So I’m not completely sure who to trust here.

I was worried too but every other reviewer says the battery its amazing. I bought the phone last week and I can tell you that GSMArena's results are completely wrong. I get a lot more battery life from this phone than the One Plus 3T.

Coming from a Xiaomi Mi Max I am a Bit dissapointed with this battery life, i forgot that most high end devices need to be charged everyday...
Its a pity that a mid range device has much better battery for less than half price...

It all depends on the user. Not by others imo. We all have our own way on how we use our phone.

Maybe because mi max is meant to last longer in terms of battery life. In addition, most mid range devices doesn't really have that much of a hardware feature unlike most high end flagship phones.

So you are comparing U11+ with xiaomi which has only snapdragon 650 on board (midrange), uses only full HD screen and has 4850mAh battery which is almost 1000 more than u11+? Did you expect 5 days with no charging? lol

I'm really happy with the battery. I expected the larger battery to cope with the display, and be average, but it's exceeded my expectations.
I'm a medium/ heavy user depending on the day.
Today is my record so far, had the phone for about 3 weeks, see pic
I have started putting power saver on overnight, clear all apps, and WiFi and data off. I'm using two sims aswell, not sure if that makes a difference

Here is mine.
Far better than my old Nexus 5 but I can't compare with other flagships. It last all day, from 7am to 22pm with ease. I needed to recharge my N5 2 to 3 times a day with similar usage.
Today
4H SOT over 12h50 and 39% left.
During this time, I played 1h of Airport City game and run for 50 min (so GPS for 50 min).
Google fit tracks me all day long too.

Mine:

Exceeds my expectations
my phone is on wifi 24/7

Are you on power saver constantly lol

Yes I am and still be able to use it the "normal" way
Then again, I let the battery go down to 1% and then start charging it again, which significantly increases the battery life and therefor get, at least, 5 days out of the battery

As far as I know, newer batteries don't behave like that, and partial charges are better with new battery technology.

Totally disapointed with mine. 5 sot more or less.
Is there something wrong with the software in this phone? This cant be normal.
I have the 6gb 128gb version

I come from a 5t and i have the oposite opinión. The 5t battery was noticiable better. 6-7 sot against 5 on this u11 plus
Seing the increíble distance between some people Who do 10 sot and many others like myself that barely so 4-5 i Wonder if this could be some software glitch depending on the model.

I am not sure what it could be, I am also using the 6GB 128GB Translucent version from Hong Kong. The phone is currently on software 1.24.400.2, even though I have had great battery since day one. I recommend a factory reset just in case or check on the battery section, details what is draining it quicker. I can even play games for the majority of the charge and still get around 7hrs every time. Also check for gesture features, google maps, apps in sync, and many things that could drain your battery.

Hi, can you post a battery history screenshot with 7hrs SOT ?
I am just configuring mine (European Dual SIM, 6GB, 128 GB), and with just a few apps, no games, it loses 20% overnight.
It seems awful, I am almost considering returning it, and I had such high hopes.
I already factory reset it again and try to test it further.
What is you screen off drain overnight, on Wifi ?
I only have one SIM, the always on display only on motion launch, location normal, a HW2 android wear watch.

Something is draining your phone like crazy if it loses 20% overnight. That is not normal behaviour at all
Smart Display set to motion battery test results
4g/No Wi-Fi
50% auto brigthness
high accuracy location
Happy with this considering I didn't even get to drain till 10%
It shouldn't drain that much overnight tbh

Do/should you charge every night?

The GN3 is an amazing phone - I love it, even with stock rom it easily lasts 2 days with about 3-5 hours screen time - which makes me ask, do/should you still charge every night?
For Note 1 and Note 2, going 2 days was pushing it, so I always charged nightly, but with Note 3, I'm wondering whether I shouldn't charge as much since it easily does 2 days?
the reason I ask is, the myths about charging too much, or leaving charged for too long, etc may ruin or reduce the life of your battery.
I still charge every time I'm next to a charger (at the office) even though I know my phone will last me another day or so.... I just like to see the battery over 50% - but is this going to ruin my batter quicker? always charging? and unplug and replug many times a day....
what does everyone else do? to charge or not to charge?

The number of recharges (the lifetime of the battery) is clearly limited so if possible I am charging in a very conservative way - once every 2 days if it works that way. But that is not always possible (and in some days I charge after a single day), plus as a backup I have a 2nd battery (fully-charged) in my backpack.
Well, I recharge it every night with no worries. If the battery loses its capacity to a point that it cannot handle a full day I'll just buy another one.
Yes there are limited life cycles to a batery so you have to charge smart. Well if you use it... you should at least once a month use up all the battery and leave it uncharged for 4 to 6 hours after it shuts down. If it turns on its not the time to charge ot yet... let it rest another couple of hours. That way you always have the full battery at your disposal, not only a part of it... thats my experience...

That's the beauty of having a removeable battery. You can charge everynight without worries of shortening the battery's lifespan.

Yeah, actually the worst you can do to an modern battery is to discharge it to deep...This will kill lifetime everytime you're doing this.

Read this: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries
Code:
TL:DR
Only empty the batterie once! (at first start to calibrate the phone)
Charge before below 30%
Charge as slowly as possible
Use google before posting nonsense
Thanks to the rest who know what they're talking about!
ps. This can be noticed when charging when dead it will be dead within a day after 2weeks of letting the batterie die everytime.
If you then charge every night again it will recover some and last longer after a while.
Let's bust a few myths here, first.
Drain cycle: Not needed. On the old batteries, you needed to do a full drain every month or some because it build up a memory. That's ancient history. It is infact very bad for your battery to do so on these new ones. Refrain from fully draining it unless you're having issues with the calibration. (Ex. if it shuts down at 20%.) Drain it once the very first time you get it. Not ever again after that without serious cause.
Best to keep at 100%: Hell no. Fully charged, particularly keeping it at fully charged, is actually quite bad for a Lithium-Ion battery.
Lithium-Ion batteries in consumer products last about 300-500 full charges before they start showing serious degradation in strength. The fuller you charge it and the longer you keep it on the charger, the lower that number becomes. Charging from 50% to 90% might make you 800 charges, where 10% to 100% will only last 300 charges.
It is best to keep the device between 30% and 90%. It is also better to charge small increments than long charges. So it's preferable to charge from 70 to 90% each time as opposed to waiting 3 days and charging from 5% to 100%.
There's been quite a number of threads all over XDA for various devices with this same question
Technology is always evolving.
But when you post a link to a specialist website you must have seen the first link who talks exacly of what I was talking about.

None the less it's possible, and I agree with the last post (it makes perfect sense) that things are now diferent.
That's why we use foruns in the first place. There are not smart users, and the others...

Yes, that's normal. It's a KitKat thing. Most people have it sitting somewhere around 25%, so 15% is nice.
A highly inaccuate KitKat thing, at that. Yesterday I played Oh Edu! Towns (a town building game that's quite heavy) for 8 hours straight, and it(stock, BBS and GSAM) said the game used 2% and Android OS 22%. Somehow I doubt that.

Do u think that custom rom like Omega will solve problem with battery life? I've got root I will just flash rcovery and rom.
I'm charging whenever I have the chance, always need to be on a high-level charge, preferably 90% and more.
There are some myths regarding charging habits that might extend the life span of the battery, one of which is to unplug the phone when the charge level hits 100%.
That works for me so far, I have been charging this way since July 2013
I charge it several times a day after the KitKat update. My HTC one was great with the update, yet my Note 3 battery life took a dive. I used to get well over a day (24 hours and some minutes) with about 4-5 hours screen time with jelly bean. Now I get 14 or so with 3 hours screen time. I've factory reset, tried greenify (no root, sucks) disabled everything and still don't get much more.

Lets be honest, most of the people here tend to upgrade to the newer phone when it comes out, depending on how much better it is of course, so we tend to have a phone for 2 years or less...
Most batteries will live that long with no problem and by the time you're ready to offload you "old" phone for an upgrade, batteries cost a few $on ebay so even if it requires a new battery it isn't too expensive...
A battery should easily last you for the amount of time you're going to be using it barring of course power surges, misuse or just a faulty battery....
Charge away and be happy. If it dies it's replaceable...

Oh Man, sorry for that...
I own a Note 3 and a S4, and I just wanted to share my experience with the battery charging habits of the S4, since in this category I'm quite sure it applies to the Note 3 also.
BTW, I've been doing the same (Battery charging) for the Note 3 also.
I do but usually at 500mah when I sleep.
I've had a note 1 and currently use the note 3. I NEVER get more than 12 hours out of my phone. in fact, I carry 2 batteries with my note 3, the note 1 was even worse, I had to carry at least 3 batteries with me to keep me going for the day, and when I say the day, i mean like 18 hours. I'll freely admit that I use my phone more like a netbook than a telephone. I very rarely actually talk on the phone, instead using my phone mostly as a tablet for use with facebook, feedly, web browsing, a couple games, taking notes (evernote ftw), twitter, foursquare, pandora and maps, the occasional email, taking photos. with the battery drain level of the note 3, I'd really have liked to see a battery with roughly twice the capacity to keep me happy for a day, possibly a day and a half with slightly more casual use.
that having been said, yes, i charge every night, because one battery is dead and the other is at 5% or so when it's time for bed. - thankfully I invested in a charge dock which charges the battery in my phone while it charges a spare.

Battery drain and battery life

Hmm I got an iPhone 8 at work and the battery brain and loss of battery on that is amazing, it barely leaks. On my pixel it just leaks battery life so easily and quickly.
I know it depends on how you use the device and 100 other factor but anyone else get this general feeling? I read Pixel 1 has heat issues with that version of CPU.
I recently purchased a used pixel.. I did expect the battery life to be better than it appears to be... i'm not sure if its because the battery is fairly degraded from the previous owners.. or if I have a slow drain.. or maybe just an unrealistic expectation of the smaller variant... but I am curious to know if other people see really good battery life on their phone.. Thanks!
I bought a used pixel as well. I have questioned the battery life as well. Then again I purchased this phone for 150.00 and the quick charge is a blessing. I did crack my screen so I was going to perform a battery change while I did the screen to see if that would fix my issue. Here is a screenshot of my battery.
Keep in mind that Apple uses some funny algorithms to report the battery percentage and usage in a way that makes the user perceive the battery life to be better than it actually is. Like, why do you think it stays at 100% for so long? When down to 3, 2, or 1%, the battery lasts forever until it the device finally shuts down. Don't trust Apple (iOS), and take everything they report with a grain of salt.

I also bought a used Pixel and found the battery life not to match my expectations, as it is quite average like mid range phones. I ran a Geekbench 3 battery test, and got the score of 1798, which is slightly below other Pixels, but not that much. So while the Pixel XL has a top level battery life, the smaller phone lacks of battery to run the powerful hardware. Still I am quite happy with battery life while soft usage watching videos.
Here are screenshots of my battery life all made without charging the phone in between. The first screenshot is with gaming and heavier apps (around 3h15 SOT), while the second and third are almost only soft usage with mainly YouTube and Netflix at 50% brightness, where I can get around 4hrs30 SOT, which I am happy with. Hope this helps somebody.

Battery Drain

First of all. I truly hate the battery drain threads, as I never had issues with it before.
I've had all pixels xl, and most of the nexus phones.
With the pixel line, I had never been so happy with battery, specially pixel 2 xl. Battery would last 1.5 to 2 days for me (I am very conservative in usage)
However, with the 3 xl, at the end of the day yesterday, I had 39%> This was a day I did not use the phone except for 10 sms, quick stock checks, 2 emails, no phone calls, 15 minutes of music with bt headphones in the metro.
Last night, I put it in safe mode, charged it. TODAY, I took away from the charger at 6am, checked emails, back in the pocket. At 8 am, I had 90%.
Removed from safe mode at 8 am. Checked some messages, spoke for 10 minutes over the phone, checked emails and stocks. It is now 9:20am and my battery is at 80%
Not good. I am really disappointed.
Could I have a defective unit? Am I spoiled with my excellent pixel 2 xl? I did see one youtuber complaining about his battery.
I am afraid mine is defective. If not, I want to go back to the pixel 2 xl.
If you have yours, and had a pixel 2 xl, please let me know how you feel about it please!
Thanks
UPDATE 12/17/18: Nothing really changed much. Pixel 3 XL is horrible with the battery when compared to Pixel 2 XL. What a disappointment in this phone, all over the place. Battery, Buggy, Notch, Audio Recording, Video Recording, Face Unlock, Gestures, etc. What a waste of hard earned money. Of all Pixels and Nexus, this is together with the Nexus 6, the most I have been disappointed.
I truly love these phones, what they represent and all, but after years with the 'google phones', it might be time to try something else.... seriously.... with this phone, the fact that I still did not receive a $50 credit from google, and all these $300 discounts, with free pixel wireless charger and pixel earphones, after 2 months from launch, it makes me extremely disappointed of being an early adopter. Next year I am definitely waiting until January, after reading all reviews and trying it out first before I buy, or just getting a different brand phone.
I am very disappointed this time around.
Hmm I haven't noticed that yet on mine. So far the standby drain has been pretty solid. I haven't had a lot of time to test it obviously, but so far it isn't standing out as an issue for me yet.

Hopefully I will have more responses like yours. If I do I will just exchange the phone with a new one. My unit is really draining fast. From my original post to now, with standby and NO USE of the phone, I am down 2% to 78% (I am using a desktop with the forum).
Thank you.

Before you exchange it, you might try conditioning the battery. Use it until it dies, fully charge it, use it again until it dies, and then one more cycle. If you .are still observing issues after that, then definitely return it.
I only suggest this as conditioning the battery is likely easier than an RMA.

I just spoke to customer service. They told me to factory reset and try again. When I mentioned that it got ward when setting up the phone, they even offered a device replacement, but I told them I am willing to try the factory re-set. I will try this and then your suggestion, kill 2 birds with the same shot.
I am so disappointed, really am... but alright, let's try this again!!!

Thank you!!

Battery saver automatically came on at 15%. I was actually shocked that I got that much SO time with it. Haven't gotten quite that again but close.

Thanks. I did recycle the battery, did the factory reset, etc, still having issues. Google is shipping me a new phone Hopefully that will help.
I did see some videos on youtube of people complaining about the battery life, also notice an article that shows that Pixel 2 XL lasts about 1:20 hours more than the 3 XL. Pretty disappointing...
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Google-Pixel-3-vs-Pixel-3-XL-battery-life_id110162
But still, mine is performing way worse than that. Let's see what the new phone will give me... Thank you!
Restricting Pixel Ambient Service from running in the background helped a little for me and I haven't noticed it interfering with anything yet. Ambient Display seems like it uses more battery on the 3 XL than on my old 2 XL. I didn't even know you could restrict the Pixel Ambient Service but you can. I also don't use Adaptive Battery because it doesn't make a difference in battery for me.

I will try that.
I had a definitive test today, while I wait for my new phone.
From 9 AM, and fully charged phones, I got the following after 4 hours and 30 minutes:
PIXEL 2 XL: 96%
PIXEL 3 XL: 73%
VERY disappointing... Thumbs down to my new phone...

Wow...that's significantly different!!! I've had SOT of 2:55 today and have 35% left? I honestly expected better battery life than my old s7 edge...

Exactly my point... the new phone should really have better battery life...
If my replacement behaves the same way, I will have to wait with my 2 XL for another year...

This almost sounds like an Adaptive Battery issue. After a week of playing with this device, it has picked up on my habits and the battery performance started getting better over time.
Im getting 0.8%/hr standby and 10%/hr screen on. Is that OK?

The great kernel developer known as Flar2 once told me that if your active drain is under 12% and your idle drain is under 1%....your doing good. :good:

My active drain is 11.8 and my standby is 1.8. The AOD is definitely using more battery on the 3 XL than it did on the 2 XL. I wish I still had my 2 XL so I could test them side by side.

Pixel 3 Battery Life?

Hello,
How is the battery life on Pixel 3 (non XL)? Does it last a whole day with normal usage? What is the average Screen On Time?
Getting a P3 for 500$ from Google Store but have serious reservations about battery life after reading reviews? Is it worth getting?
I just got mine 2 months ago. I have about 300 apps installed. Most have been opened and therefore running stuff in background. I can Easily go all day without a charge. Some evenings I'm only at 50% before bed. I consider myself a medium user (not streaming a lot of video, etc). It was a much better experience than my early Pixel XL. Hope this helps.

I don't know if you're going to get the answer you're looking for because "normal usage", screen on time, apps installed, types of apps, network coverage, etc all vary widely from person to person. What works great for me might not at all for you.
If I have a normal use day I have about 5 to 6 hours of SoT. I've gotten 7+, it's about what my S10e got,.
However I am a heavy user, constantly rebooting and testing new modules and on Q beta so I can get anywhere from 2 to 4 but that is because I am HARDCORE draining the phone.

Thank you. Any idea on the screen on time that you are getting from the phone?

That is pretty good. Is that on the regular 3 or the XL Version?
Thanks.

Shouldn't screen on time be a parameter to gauge that with ?

I'm averaging about 2-4 hours per day of screen time per Digital Wellbeing.

That is not too great and does not give me much confidence. I have heard battery life on 3A is stellar. I had the Pixel 1XL and Nexus 6Pand after a few months, Battery life went bad on both those phones. Hence, someone apprehensive, considering all the negative I have heard about Pixel 3 battery right off the bat.

If the several months down the line degredation theory is accurate for pixels, then the 3a having stellar battery life may also be smoke and mirrors.
I had a 3a and sold it for a 3. Got $100 bb gift card when I bought it, sold it for $350. So I made $50 in that and bought my pixel 3 for $400. I think it's worth it for the extra $50 to have the better processor, water rating and wireless charging.
My battery life has been...ok with my 3. Absolutely nothing to write home about but certainly not the worst I've ever seen. Drain is a bit higher than I like to see, idle and active (1.5 and 13 respective, according to exkm). My screen in time per cycle is between 5-6 hours generally but that is a misleading number for to different setups and signal strength.
I say if you dig the device, get it. If you hate it, hell that's what swappa is for. I have bought and sold so many devices on there because they didn't meet my standards it because something else caught my eye.
I will be keeping this device for awhile. I really like the size and features. I'm sure I could boost battery by nurfing features but I am not interested in doing that. This has been excessively long so... Let us know what you decide. Hope my diatribe helped a little. If not... It was free, so don't complain

My Pixel 3 barely makes a day on a charge. Meanwhile, I use my old Moto X4 to stream music to my work headset, and it can do that for a whole day and still be at 60-70% battery by the end. I tried that with my Pixel, and I ended up having to use extreme battery saver mode by the end of the day.
My battery has been much better since I turned off mobile network always active in developer settings. Keeps idle drain will below 1% now. I couldn't figure it for the life of me why it was so high. Try it!

Normally somewhere around 7-8 hours for me. Close to 9 at some occasions. Not a gamer though. Mobile data always enabled, display on 90hz, resolution at1080 . First smartphone ever that I do not have to charge every day!

Yes, for me it is. I came from a 3 years old HTC10, with a battery that had only ~70% capacity left, where I had 2.5-3hours of SOT. I had to charge the damn thing twice per day...
If you haven't already checked this thread I recommend that you do:

For me as a heavy social media user (Whatsapp, snapchat, Instagram, etc) the battery is normally between 4 and 5 hours sot. So if you don't use those battery heavy apps I could imagine 7 hours.
I'm on 90hz and 1440p.
Battery has been very good with normal usage and not a concern of mine.
Lol battery you shouldn't be worrying about at all
