[projekt.] is a bit touchy on bad reviews.. with good reason? - prjkt.io

Hello everyone!
I had a bit of a critical outlet on Substratum. Let me explain why. I've been having some buggy experiences with Substratum overall. Apps not even booting, awkward contrast issues (dark text on dark background and the opposite), bootloops that needed fixing with the Substratum recovery zip, seeing "up-to-date" on layers after I uninstalled them all and rebooted, you name it. The issues have been consistent since Nougat received OMS support, throughout several ROMs. Now, I've always found a way to work around the issues or I sorted it by combining several themes. I've gladly spent some money on premium themes like Flux, Spectrum or Glow but after flashing the first public Android Oreo ROM for OnePlus One, I was a bit surprised by the way [projekt.] handled things. I rooted with Magisk 14.0 and on Substratum installation, I was greeted with this screen:
{

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
I was not presented with a root request at any point.
When tapping "DOWNLOAD NOW!" it took me to andromeda ★ substratum stock rootless backend (Unreleased) that is rather expensive for an add-on (€1.99) and call me Jon Snow here but shouldn't 'rootless' already be a part of Substratum itself? I also wondered why this wasn't released by [projekt.] but by [projekt.] development team.
I uninstalled the official Substratum (v842) and sideloaded a "bleeding edge build" (v846) from a channel I've been following on Telegram (not sure if I'm allowed to share it so I won't). That one immediately prompted for root and works great. Ironically, after applying themes with that one, replacing the sideloaded build with the official Play Store version now works too. The main point is that I was forced into payment first, so I posted the following review on Play and got the reply stated below it:
I found that last sentence to be somewhat unprofessional: "Or you could always create your own theming app.", it's the type of answer I would expect of a XDA troll or in a flame, not by a representative of the community-driven project that has now become the most prominent player in Android theming. Its presence here as "XDA Community app" dictates that it should be free all the way, no?

I could be in the wrong here. Heck, I probably am, but why? If it had remained unanswered, it would just've been another silly review but considering I seem to have struck a chord here, I'd love to have your opinion. Who better than the community itself to judge me :silly:

Every version on Play Store always requests root, but the act of uninstalling the Play Store version in favor of the Telegram debug versions reset the reauthentication trigger on SuperSU/Magisk, so you were asked for it again.

This addon is not included in Substratum for several reasons. Firstly, the nature of the app requires it to be run in a static manner as a normal Java desktop app. Secondly, just like Theme Interfacer, we aren't meant to update it often, requiring a full restart of the device. They are released by our company, of which XDA works with as a partner.

You weren't forced into payment, you just were not aware that reinstalling the application would reset the authentication prompt delivered through Magisk/SuperSU.

I hope you understand that by one-starring our application, you have every right to do so. But using it to get our attention, you resorted to the lowest of Play Store reviews already. I'm not saying anyone did anything wrong, but you could have contacted us directly regarding complaints or bug reports. You can check our source code and see that we have not touched the root requester logic for root checks in a long while, yet it magically works after uninstalling the Play Store version (different signature from our CI builds) - the reason is due to the authentication on Magisk/SuperSU.
I hope you understand that you could have easily spoken to us, but you ended up using the Play Store's review place. You could have contacted me here, and I would be able to help you. We are all trying to have fun, if you believe that us asking for a small payment for all our work is too much to ask for, then what Char said was rather correct, you should try building it yourself.

Not "cleverly", it's for respecting the forum rules. We are in partnership with XDA afterall, just compare our Play Store address with the Contact address on the site.

Since you know where our thread is, it would have been better for you to bring your concerns over being 'forced' to purchase Andromeda to us here, rather than in the reviews on the play store.

Good day!
Look at that, mister Chum himself responds and that is, naturally, very much appreciated. About the term 'force', of course I could find my way around it, this is more about the people that can't. And don't think I didn't consult anyone beforehand, I'd spoken about aforementioned issues to theme developers and people that exceed my skill level with great length. But you're right, I should've gone to the source, that approach was wrong of me. I have adjusted the review yesterday. Fact remains, though, that Substratum still has a long way to go in terms of compatibility and stability. I'm glad I had your undivided attention to the matter. In all honesty, I personally din't consider Play Store reviews to be as 'significant' as they seem to be judging by the reaction. Of course, I'm not a developer, how would I know. Therefore I offer my apologies and I'll be more considerate upon writing further reviews.
It's a little troubling, still, that non-rooted users are still forced into payment or did I misunderstand that? Say a 6P owner takes the official Oreo update and installs Substratum, that person will have to pay for Andromeda for any theming to work, right? I'm not saying that's bad practise, it is well within your right to get paid for the tremendous amount of amazing work you guys do. Heck, I wouldn't even mind an ad or two in Substratum. I'm merely highlighting the fine line between your profitable enterprise and the free open source nature of this community.
For the record, again, that is completely unrelated to my endless respect for your work.

Again, no one is being 'forced' to do anything, they are quite welcome to use Substratum with root or with a supported custom ROM for free. If they choose to stay unrooted, then they will have to choose between paying the small fee to use Substratum with andromeda or theming manually without our apps to ease the process.

Possible new XDA feature set? Configuration Profiles per phone? (Ex: my T-mob Wing)

In my sigfile below, you can see what I am currently running on my T-Mobile Wing.
The XDA site, for a long time, has been incredible in terms of specific app development, ROMs, etc. But I am now looking for "the next step": Total configuration recommendations: specific recs on which apps to use together with which ROMs on a given device, to achieve a user's most important usability functions and requirements.
I am going to layout the current issues I have been having problems with, mention my priority requirements, and I'm seeking recs on a smart configuration suite that begins with the ROM, includes recs on the overall interface and app launcher, down to specific APP recommendations to best meet my needs.
I think it would be great to eventually create, for all phone models, a series of consumer-end-user "Configuration Profiles", so right now, this is a first request: Help me optimize my T-Mobile Wing for how I want to use it.
=================================
My current configuration:
ROM: OpenTouch 6.5 by ttran001
INTERFACE & APPLICATION LAUNCHER: iFonz 1.1.2 by ssj5trunks
BASIC PHONECALL FUNCTIONS:supbro's iDialer + iContact (via larna)
SOFT KEYBOARD: PCM Keyboard by tene w/ iPhone theme by 2manyphones /
PRIMARY BROWSER: Opera Mini (strengths: Speed, lightweight. Weakness: data input is 2-step process; no copy & paste of web content)
SECONDARY BROWSERS: Opera Mobile (but for some reason the SIP is always overriding my preference, and going back to Windows soft keyboard). Skyfire (great for Youtube; lacks setting your own startpage URL), NetFront (I think their zoom/context scroller is fantastic)
MUSIC PLAYER: A_C's s2p
VIDEO PLAYER: for YouTube videos I use Skyfire Browser; otherwise YouTubePlay by milesmowbray
PHOTO VIEWER/EDITOR/SLIDESHOW A_C's s2v and HTC Album
FILE EXPLORER: Total Commander (has drag & drop!)
==============================
I am having compatibility problems, and I can't seem to troubleshoot the conflict sources. So it's time for a new ROM install, and rebuild my suite of apps. I'm hoping I can get a few recs on ROMS, application launchers, dialers.
USABILITY REQUIREMENTS: I am a power user, but not a techie. I currently have been using iFonz, have liked it a lot. Large target areas for finger navigation is very impt to me, especially when driving. Any of the basic windows soft key areas, scrollbars, OK button, Top-bar icons are not big enough, creating for me constant flow of mistakes and "stalls" in completing just the baseline functions of "Speakerphone On/Off", Hide Keypad/Show keypad etc.
If I had my way I would never have to touch any aspect of the Windows Mobile Interface.. but alas, that is not yet a reality. But getting closer day by day, example: supbro just today released a "green button" app that ties his iDialer app to the windows default dialer. A major breakthrough in usability.
What's Impt to me and Not Impt to me: (for Recommendations' sake):
NOT IMPT: I never run games, don't care. Weather is nice, but not impt. SMS and MMS are lo priority for me, I rarely use them.
MOST IMPT:
1. Basic phone functions, that allow me to take the phone out of my pocket and not end up accidentally ending the call before even getting the phone to my ear. Similarly, not having something accidentally trigger DIALING A FRIEND's NUMBER, or last redial. Big large phone dialpad, with large phone number display, bullet-proof "speakerphone on/off", bullet-proof "SAVE TO CONTACTS" without all the windows mobile backflips of "select Save to Contacts" then do I press "NEW CONTACT" or what? Just terrible usability design. Easy to find REDIAL.
2. Contacts: Contact manager with THUMBNAIL PHOTOS list, jump to alphabet letter, LARGE target area for finger to tap-and-dial in 1-step, not going to a detail screen to select WHICH number, or do I want to send email or SMS.
3. MP3 player: big obvious target area for volume control, and timeline slider, next song, etc. Integration with hard keys for next song, pause, mute. (S2u2 already does this, but there are still some squirrely problems, which create that dreaded problem of wanting to turn it off asap but no, gotta do backflips to get to the interface.)
4. CLOSE ALL APPS: since the Wing has the crappy old processor of its predecessor (MDA), and limited RAM, there are always times when apps lock up, and you just want to close everthing
5. one-click WIFI ON/OFF -- I don't want to go through some cumbersome Communication Manager. When I get home to my network, or I am at a Starbucks and want to use Tmobile Hotspot, it should be a no-brainer: wifi is turned on, all available networks show by default, all in one step. Just as if I take my Macbook Pro to a cafe, click one icon, see all networks. To me it would be even greater if, when I was at a Tmobile Hotspot, 1 click would *turn on wifi, *launch Tmobile's hotspot utility
6. Voice Command, Handwriting SIP, and a bunch of other things.
=======================
I'm hoping someone will take me up on this big-picture request. Thank you
(reserved for photos/ videos of my current configuration)
saving this space to come back and add some photos and videos that demonstrate the problems I want to solve.
You've been a member long enough to know that "Recommend a Rom" threads usually get closed.
You've done a good job listing what exactly you're looking for but still the title is along the lines of a noobie swooping in and asking for the best rom.
Where you do differ is that you've obviously put a lot of thought into what you're looking for but alas the thread title doesnt accurately reflect the depth of your post.
Honestly this sounds like the idea that launched a project. The question is will you step up and coordinate the project?
If so I would recommend you retitle this thread and take the concept to the next step.

Hey thanks for replying, kyphur. Honestly, I actually didn't know that... but hold on -- there are 2 reasons why is this. So I will explain, because my intention is not to break rules & protocols -- i have too much respect for this community:
(a) I'm actually not a regular here to see those patterns. I started with an MDA, learned how to use XDA-dev site to try to find answers, went through my initiation of asking dumb questions, getting slapped to "use search, damnit", found my way to understanding the cultuyre and rules.. but even after a year I was too scared to ever try a mod on my MDA. And it wasn't til I got my Wing that I finally jumped in to do the whole shebang -- from hardSPL, to ROM installation, etc. With great help from various members here, like papamopps. And once I get something working, I am not frequenting the site, other than for subscribed threads to Apps that are still in development that I am using -- like for example iContact and iDialer. Because I really rely upon my phone for work, and once it's doing what I need it to do, I generally am not cruising looking for "the next great thing".
I want to add, though, that inasmuch as it may sound as though I am merely a taker and not a giver, the way that I give is by donating to the app developers and ROM chefs whose products I have used. And if you ask A_C and ssj5trunks, for example, my donations are large -- as my best way to compensate back. Also, I volunteer to host websites, and for example A_C hosts part of his new site www.A2-s2.com with me -- and I am happy to be of service that way.
(b) The second reason I didn't explicitly know that was a rule here is because I tend to mostly be in the WING/Herald "silo" -- and there, the user Pureskillz is known for doing thorough Reviews of Roms -- which are amazing -- and I have asked before in threads in that section for recs on which ROM might be fastest for me to use to run iFonz, and I have gotten really helpful replies.
This is all quite different from a newbie parachuting in to say "hey guys, what should I use on my Wing, i want to have an iphone type of phone". So thank you for letting me know - i honestly did not know this was verboten

Honestly this sounds like the idea that launched a project. The question is will you step up and coordinate the project?

Actually, this is exactly part of what I want to do, but on a "clean page" so as to give newbies an easier pathway IN to understanding what is even AVAILABLE to them. But my interest is in mainstream users, not so much in the tricked-out overclocked custom registry code-writing userbase. Because to me, the whole site in its entirety is geared for those users.
So yes, I am wanting to create a website that places a mainstream-friendly "front end" to this amazing knowledge-base. All links would be attributed and linked to the actual XDA threads. But I want to provide capsule summaries that help users understand where they are being sent, and how they should approach a "Release" thread... What they can expect, the protocols for asking for help, etc.
So yes, I have given a lot of thought to what I think, as a Usability and Information Designer, is a huge gap between mainstream phione users who are finding out about XDA for first time -- largely thru YouTube videos which kinda blow their minds -- because its functionality is so beyond what is marketed to them as possible via carriers like (in USA) T-Mobile, AT&T, etc -- and the ability to comprehend this site -- which is gargantuan in nature, and a maze of complexity for a newbie.
Let me give a very tangible example: I would bet you that probably less than 1% of the users of Windows Mobile in the USA, who are using for example, the T-Mobile Wing, have any idea at all that they can get for free GPS location tracking on their phones, right now, today, just by using Google Maps. It's not ever presented to users. So you have this huge population of people who have a truly awesome function available for their phones right now -- that they have no idea is the case.
I was just discussing this in San Francisco the other day with the Product Development Manager at Google for the Google Maps product line.
So: re stepping up to the plate: one of the parts I have in mind is to help facilitate the assembly of -- the creation of -- these "Configuration Profiles" which would seek to create common function-sets that certain types of users would likely say "YES, THAT ONE, that's matches the kinds of things I am looking for.
So, with that in mind, I wanted to try it out here, and see if this would be something users here would support as being worthwhile, or more of just a pain in the ass. And, the timing is such that I really have had more and more problems having my Wing function effectively, and I know from my own experiences that the selection of a ROM is really quite critical to building the suite of apps & functionality I desire.
If so I would recommend you retitle this thread and take the concept to the next step.

The concept sounds great. I agree with you in that many people want functionality but who dont have the technical knowledge, (or want it initially) but who wish to maximise their devices usefulness. They also may not want to risk damaging something they have just paid £500 for. How many times have i had my friends come upto me and say, how did you do that? can i have it? can you do it for me? haha....
Whilst some may say this is not in the spirit of xda as one should not venture into the depths of winmo without technical knowledge, i believe it adheres to its basic principles and that xda should continue in its evolvement (sorry my spelling is crap today); the more the members the greater the knowledge.
Whilst i only have a Polaris and Prophet, i would be interested in this dev project as it could encompass all devices. It would benefit xda in that noobies who dont or cant get to grasp with the technicalities have somewhere (one place) to "glorify" their device. I think once the new members have blinged their device, their interest and curiousity expands... "mm i wonder what else i can do". THis leads to further reading and learning and such new blood and knowledge can only be of benefit.
Count me in.
@quick site
Sounds like you want to either get into cooking your own rom, or should grab an ultralite rom and install everything you want.
You may want to try task facade for a task manager. everything pops up with a large screenshot and to close apps you just have to long hold them.
You can set task facade to a hardbutton (or if your hardbuttons are all full you can use hbutton which allows you to map several programs to one key)
An introductory video example: to orient a new user

Thanks for replying. ... Here's the video I recently added to YouTube just to show in a non-technical way WHAT one could do on their T-Mobile Wing.

As I told the Google Maps Mobile product manager, I don't think a tiny fraction of people know about the GPS functioning just via Google Maps usage. This video would not appeal to the vast majority of XDA Members, however, because it is meant to be a soft-introduction to "outsiders", vs an information-packed walk-through or installation guide.

My area of professional expertise is usability design, consumer content design, information design. I spent over a year getting the feel of XDA site before I jumped in to try to mod my Wing. I learned the culture, realized there were LOTS of preliminary things which I had no idea about, and had to first assemble a macro knowledge set up: what is Hardl SPL, what is an RUU, what is a radio rom, does a ROM have Windows Mobile OS in it? If so, Is it a legal license? what does "brick my phone" mean? ... I went to the Herald wiki, I saw guides for noobs to read, I read them, but then circular questions like: "Be sure to read XXXXX's great guide to flashing"... So I read this guide, many of them, and they'll say "be sure to make sure whether you have version x or version y; if X, never Hard SPL, if Y, it's okay; then a thread "Hard SPL working on WING!", then more guides how to Hard SPL your phone. Then you're supposed to pick a ROM.
If you ask for advice, you're told "start reading; everyone has different needs". SO you read up, use search, end up on a thread you think applies to ROMS for your phone, only to be 12 pages into the thread before you grasp the concept that this thread and this ROM is only for an HTC Himalaya. ANd it's completely irrelevant to my quest.
But senior people here would say "It's obvious, you were in the wrong area; look at the wiki, it has a list of phones, only search for ROMS for that phone"... but some ROMS are for many phones. Anyone, this is nothing new to those experienced with XDA. And I understand the frustration of senior members who keep posting stickies to help Newbies prep properly and not just dive in to ask "how do I get iphone on by HTC Touch?" etc.
But as can be seen very clearly from THIS SEMINAL THREAD, "Let People Ask Whatever They Like", that there is a culture "war" developing on XDA between those who feel adamantly: this site is for tinkerers, and if you've come just to get "kewl" stuff for your phone, you're in the wrong place. While other senior members are adamantly in the other corner of "why not help people? So what if they ask stupid questions? Just move on, ignore them, you don't need to chastise everyone."
Whilst i only have a Polaris and Prophet, i would be interested in this dev project as it could encompass all devices. It would benefit xda in that noobies who dont or cant get to grasp with the technicalities have somewhere (one place) to "glorify" their device. This is nice to hear. The biggest problem with any knowledge base is in formation design. Despite the wiki, despite the sticky threads, despite the SIG LINES with links to Help Guides, despite the warnings, it is my professional opinion that this spectacular knowledge-base called XDA-Developers, is like a big tinker-toy project with new arms constantly being added, and nodes that even everyday users don't even know about, because they are specialized areas for particular phones etc. And now there is a whole new initiative ( A GREAT ONE!) to develop for the Android platform.
To me, creating some landing pages that help orient newcomers without overloading them with a huge maze of a dense site -- helps everyone:
* for sure helps the newbie
* helps the senior members (who will see yet another 100 threads open per day with same old new questions) from having to constantly look at "101" type questions.
* helps the software authors in getting donations for their works by more easily shuttling newcomers to the specific kinds of apps they have been looking for.
I think we are seeing a crossroads right now, with the launch of the Apple Apps store, the Android Apps store, Blackberry's store, and Windows' expected entry (what's it called, Skyapps ?)... Critical mass has now been reached in the marketplace for owners of toucscreen devices to now embrace specialized apps and functions that fit specific needs, and manufacturers and carriers are finally figuring this out. XDA sits is a very unusual place amongst all this, given the open-source spirited "knowledge-share & donate" philosophy of the site. I think there will be longtime veteran members here who will not be happy with influxes of even MORE news trying to get the latest & greatest. I just believe the dam has broken, and it might be good to filter newcomers and orient them (my interest), vs having them flood in and irritate the **** out of the people who built this community...
Sorry for the lenghts of these posts. I'm just wanting to be clear.

Sounds like you want to either get into cooking your own rom, or should grab an ultralite rom and install everything you want.

Thanks. Yes, that's what I have done to date. I started with a PapaMopps ROM, then moved to an OpenTouch ROM, and now am trying to consider WHICH ultralite woud work best for my configuration. It's these snags like dialers that confound me. AND which topbar is overriding another -- for exmaple, when iFonz is in use, it overrides the top bar with access to windows start logo, etc.
You may want to try task facade for a task manager. everything pops up with a large screenshot and to close apps you just have to long hold them.

Thank you for the rec. i will search for Task Facade.
I also just found WkTask from a thread here at XDA -- and tried it out. Now THAT's what I'm looking for... but again, it's the conflcit with apps or interfaces that overlay that top bar so that it is not a constant.
You can set task facade to a hardbutton (or if your hardbuttons are all full you can use hbutton which allows you to map several programs to one key)

Ahh, I never new until now about Hbutton. That's exactly what I need! I will search for it too. I am guessing it is context sensitive -- and offers a different default action depending on which app is the one in use?
thanks very much.
@ quicksite
Assume you are going to set up your own site for this project or is this something you are going to do on xda? im interested in assisting in this in which ever direction you want this to go, so let me know and i will find some time and buy some more coffee....
I'm not sure quite what you want to achieve, but I think what you want is a less technical (i.e. suitable for normal people) way to access the information here.
This sub forum was brought about because it was decided that new users probably wouldn't have a huge technical knowledge, so it woul be better to let them ask about "what's x" somewhere where people want to help rather than hack. So in a sense, this sub forum goes part way to achieving that.

Rom Devs Read this before posting!
BE Forwarned!
If you are a rom Dev, and you post a rom on this forum, I will be checking the roms for warez.
As a dev, I know how hard it is to put out good quality work, and if your a rom dev you should know as well.
Because of my respect for other devs, whether its roms or apps, and my respect for XDA (Who could be sued for warez being present here), I will check every rom posted.
If I find that your rom contains warez, I will remove the links to your rom and let you know that I have done so. I will ask you to remove the warez before putting up a link to your rom again. At the time that you post the new link to your rom, I will check it again for warez. If I check your rom again and there are warez present I WILL lock the thread and remove your links untill you present me with a clean rom, at which time I will unlock your thread. If I lock your thread and it remains locked for 7 days with no response from you, the dev, I WILL delete the entire thread.

out of curiosity if someone got permission from the dev to redistribute the app would u allow the rom to remain? and what kind of proof would u need to be given?
one more question! is it considered warez if the app on the market is a paid app but the developer has it online on another site for free is it classified as warez if it is used in a rom?

I think in this situation, proof would be a copy of an email or something similar.
And I think if an app is available for free from the dev themselves, and also paid on the market, it should be ok but permission prefered. For example the A2SD app when a2sd was new. The app was posted on this forum as free download, and in market at £1, I know devs made their own a2sd scripts, but I think if the app was to be included in a rom, permission would be appreciated
But that's just me, not too sure really

If its a paid app in the market, or anywhere for that matter, then it is warez.
You MAY use a devs app in your rom as long as you have permission. However that permission must be verified and it WILL be looked into by me or another mod in order to make sure it is authentic.
In a case like this it would be best for the dev to contact a mod at the forum to let us know this is ok.
Stericson
what about things like setcpu? like I bought it on the market and all, but the dev has a thread on xda here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
yea.
Edit: i saw that you made kingklick remove setcpu from his rom?????
Yes, because he didnt have permission from the owner and the owner actually confronted him about it...
No offense but.....
lmfao..this thread is so hypocritical. I love it! You redefine the word warez to fit your own personal standards, then force said standards on the rest of the users. You would have been a great asset to the Christians during the crusades.
So let's get this right. The things you listed are warez, but TGE, SenseUI, BlurUI, Windows Mobile roms, etc isn't? Please enlighten us on exactly how you reached this conclusion. The way you are handling this makes it seem as if you are being an advocate for only independent devs, and saying f*** the corporations and their devs. Steal from them all you want.
I understand that banning all warez would be restrictive enough to make devs go elsewhere to post, but what good does banning some do? Protect xda from the small time devs who can't afford legal teams anyway? If you really wanted to cover xda's a** you would be banning redistribution of the big boys' software.
Please don't take offense to this. This is meant to have a humorous tone (in other words I'm just BSing around). I don't mean it as a personal attack or anything like that. I have much respect for the people here who help make android better, and understand what you guys are getting at. I just found the obviously flawed nature of your actions way to funny to not point out.
Sounds fair enough =]
It would be awesome if ROM devs create their own apps and have it exclusively on Their roms. It will definantly spruce up the experience

The whole point here is to keep xda out of trouble. For the most part, Microsoft, HTC, Motorola, etc. don't care that we're tinkering with their stuff. When they do mind, xda has to stop it (like what happened with Cyanogen's C&D). You can't ban all redistribution of "intellectual property" (I hate that phrase, it's stupid to think that knowledge could be someone's property, but that is the current view of the law), or people would leave xda, but you have to ban outright swapping of paid apps, or xda gets in big trouble.
That said... I question the free here/paid on the market apps. There are some apps on the market that are paid, but are open source (in some cases GPL) and can be freely downloaded from the dev's website. In this case, certainly permission would be best, but in the case of the dev not responding, certainly this would be okay? I mean, in this case (open source), it's completely legal to redistribute. Therefore, including it in your rom should absolutely be allowable, yes?
That said, I thought I had read somewhere that betterterminal was free software? Or am I wrong....? I will go look into it.
So that means that all devs must NOT include any of the Google apps, right?
I mean every dev must come up with a way just like Cyanogen did, right?
Afterall, the C&D letter to Cyanogen set a precedence. Everyone is well aware of Google's position.
That makes it far more serious for everyone to comply.

The free Version is fine in ROMS, obviously not the paid version
Ok, This is cut and dry. Yall need to quit trying to make this bigger then what it is.
In XDA's eye,
All paid for apps are warez.
Quickoffice is warez.
If the app in question is open source, then its open source and can be used, link that states it is open source would be great to display.
Quit trying to blow this bigger then what it is. We could stand here all day and argue over the "technacalities" of whats legal and whats not. So lets just not waste our time writing long posts to argue something that isnt even worth arguing here, IMO.
Once again, untill further notice, on XDA, in specific regards to content in relation to android, the term warez will reference Paid apps, and quickoffice.
In the future we may add to this, but not at this time.

I am the developer of Better Terminal Emulator. Better Terminal Emulator 1.3 was for Android 1.0. It's best to use Better Terminal Emulator Magic v1.5 for Cupcake and later. I recently updated Better Terminal Emulator Pro for the new Android devices coming out, and will be upgrading the free version of Better Terminal Emulator Magic to include all the soft keyboard bugfixes that went into Pro. Essentially "Magic" will have all features of "Pro" except the Enhanced Shell and Virtual DPAD.
Any ROM developers who wish to include Better Terminal Emulator Magic are free to do so.
Also, I made a Wiki to cover Better Terminal Emulator:
http://www.magicandroidapps.com/wiki
My goal is to make Better Terminal Emulator Magic the best FREE Terminal Emulator for Android, and to add some great features to Pro for people who want to be on the cutting edge with the latest improvements. I am also planning to support x86-based Android devices, and have posted Better Terminal Emulator Magic to many app sites, since I know many development devices don't have access to the official Market.
Thanks for your interest in, and support of Better Terminal Emulator.

Kudos for protecting the app devs, but...
When did XDA become a soap opera?
For f*%#s sake, people, if a dev says so, then it is so!
If you don't like it, find another forum!
Hell, I don't totally agree with the definition of "warez" they seem to be using, but this isn't MY FORUM, so I don't have ANY REASON TO COMPLAIN WHEN THEY MAKE RULES!
Dammit, just be happy they're leaving stuff alone that they're leaving alone! If you can't live without quickoffice, or stealing paid apps, then FIGURE OUT A WAY TO FIND THEM YOURSELF!
Some of you want to argue about the most ridiculous crap! At least you can still download the friggin roms!
STFU already!

[ROM] Chocmatic's EVO ROM

What's up guys? I would like to introduce my first EVO ROM. I'm going with a basic name for now, since I really don't know what I want to call it. Any suggestions are welcomed. I will post information on this rom here but all future ROM's and info will be posted on my blog Choc's Blog.
I want to start off by saying thanks to the following board members:
Flipzmode: For providing us with the stock evo ruu zip file
MagnusRagnarok: Helping me understand android better and working with me on Hero/Evo Roms.
regaw_leinad: Helping me with the quickboot fix
JsChiSurf: Providing me with assistance on hero roms and info so we can hopefully deodex EVO files. (Magnus - we will get this working!) LOL
If, I forgot anyone please let me know. Now onto the fun stuff.
ROM INFO
Base: Supersonic_1.32.651.1

I can see why you removed some of the bloatware but why in the world would you remove the above?
I know it's a matter of opinion but personally live wallpapers isn't an HTC or Sprint thing it's an ANDROID thing and a lot of us enjoy it.
Voice search & dialing, pdf viewer, ringtone trimmer, & sound recorder these are all things alot of people will use at one point or another, these are not exactly bloatware since many users will go to the market and download a similar app at some point.
I dunno maybe it's just me but it seems like all the hatred towards HTC Sense elements is getting a little bit crazy. These apps aren't even exactly considered bloatware unlike amazon or the other Sprint garbage that startup in the background everytime you boot the phone.
Either way thanks for the release.

Try to stay on topic. Please dont insult my intelligence with such snarky comments. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING I HAVE EVER SAID WAS INSIGHTFUL, nor is it implied by myself. If it bothered your eyes so badly then why would you quote? Wheatever YOU gather is your own perspective. Try to remain objective. This site is viewed by many different types of ppl, with many different perspectives. As ive told more than 1000 others, it has NOTHING to do with my mood or some insightful point i am trying to make. It is a display of our freedom of expression. IT is more asthetically pleasing to MY eyes. I am an art major. If we were not allowed to use them then i dont think the forum would provide them. I am from AMERICA. Are you really crying about fonts, sizes and formats of my posts?in a forum? on the internet?.....Any of my questions were purely rhetorical, PLEASE do not post answers, as this is the last response you will receive from me.......NOW BACK TO TOPIC....CHOCOMATIC, i think i have it Ill send you some test apks in the chan or on gtalk. I think, in your rant, you missed the quoted poster's point. Whether you realize it or not, that style of posting denotes to others that you believe your post is somehow more exceptional or important than everyone else's in the thread, and deserves some special recognition. Since basically no one else in the forum does it, it also shows a lack of respect for others, since you're putting greater emphasis on your posts.
Before you point this out yourself - I'm not saying this is your intention, nor accusing you of doing anything intentional or malicious. I'm simply pointing out the message it sends to others, and why it prompted timothydonohue's response...and possibly the 1000's of others you mentioned.

I have to kind of agree. It's kind of like posting in ALL CAPS. People can use big text when they're uploading instructions or a FAQ, it makes common sense. But to use it with no meaning? That's almost closer to "PoSTiNg LiKe ThiS." I just assumed he was legally blind or something, no offense.
ok, back on topic..
OP thanks for the ROM.. its not my cup of tea since some of the apps you removed I use.. but I still appreciate the effort.
Simple solution, can we get the removes uploaded as a zip?
Let's not piss off the devs, if he chooses to post flamboyantly, why does that really bother you.
Effing people.....WOW. Good work OP on putting out some of your work and sharing it with the world.
The other two with their internet girl fight need to take that business some where else. That makes you and the community look bad when outsiders consider a place like XDA. Makes us all look like a bunch of whining 4 year old women that would rather fight then share knowledge.
fight it out through PM or shut up.
BACK on to topic. Thanks alot again. I will try this out when i get home.
i have to say reading what was removed and added put a smile on my face.. thanks for the rom, looking forward to your work!!!
For those who don't like choice please move on to the IPHONE it's that way-----------> (0)
Magnus chooses to use his font and display his artistic style is for his own amusement or enjoyment not for yours. If you feel that it encroaches on your right to view text in a totally vanilla format then don't view it and skip to the next post. It's not complicated.
Also don't be RUDE yourself and jack the OP's ROM thread. This is not the what you feel when Magnus uses his "crazy fonts" thread.
Thank you OP for the ROM!
dont know what the deal is but i have been trying to get this rom however 4share is keeping me in a loop.. i have waiting 90 seconds who knows how many times because the download link that appears after the wait just takes me back.. basically going into a continuous loop.. really hoping theres actually a problem and not user error cause that would be sorta embarassing since ive been doing this for a while.. can someone give me a heads up and tell me what im doing wrong, six ppl have gotten the file so far but im not sure how.. was using linux and that wasnt working so i tried with windows and im getting the same results!!!

[BETA] Quizzer

Hey everyone,
a user from the android-hilfe.de forum mentioned the idea of an app that i found very interesting. I then started implementing stuff and here i want to present you the first usable beta version of the app.
It is a community quiz. You can post quiz questions, other users answer them and place their bid on their answer. At the end you close the question with the correct answer and everyone is rewarded according to their bids.
Please help beta testing that app. Please note that in this very first beta, no work has been done for layout and design. See it as a functional prototype. Although i would be very thankful for design/layout ideas, maybe some even wants to help me?
I'm really looking forward to your feedback
Here is the link to a simple beta page that i hacked together: http://quizzer-android.appspot.com

good concept for an app, will probably be pretty fun when its finished, but right now the app is extremely unstable, sometimes it just exits right after I opened it, it always force closes when it tries to load the "by date" list in the "list of questions" section. The "by potsize" list usually works though that sometimes crashes too, in addition to all that the app seems to sometimes crash at completely random times.
In running the app on the LG Optimus 2x Phone, running CM7 Nightly build 21.
ps: on the registration part of the app, you only ask for the password once, its pretty common to ask for the password twice to avoid people mistyping the password, this does't really bother me that much but when you are typing on the android virtual keyboard it pretty easy to mistype something and not notice it, before you try to login to your app account.
ps2: If you don't mind me asking, I'm a bit curious about how you store account information, do you store the email & password in plain text? or do you hash & salt them? I'm just curious because I don't like to use services that doesn't protect their user data properly.
There was a FC-bug when displaying a question without any tag. Please reinstall with the new version (same url).
I think once there are a wider range of questions it will be better (I know thatis on us, the users) .
I am also interested in knowing how my information is being stored.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
It takes time for me to make up all the false answers to make funnier quizzes.
It allowed 0 QZR for a bid.
Admob area's size need to be fixed.
Anyway, I will love it when it's all finished.

Hey everybody,
it has been two busy days for me, unfortunately not two busy Android days... I really thank you for you feedback so far and i am excitingly reading through the notification mails as they arrive. I just didn't have the time to answer or even code on the project.
@mikael, is this really the level you want continue this conversation? I do also have a reallife besides Android, sorry. Did you ever try to get one of your cars throught german TÜV? Then you know what is was doing the past two days...
I'll get back to you guys tomorrow and answer all the questions

sorry, as I said it was not meant as an insult, I do understand that you probably have other non android related stuff to do, It just that when you posted a post after I posted my feedback without responding at all, it seemed like you were intentionally ignoring my feedback, but if thats not he case then sorry I misunderstood you, I'm usually a pretty nice guy so please don't get the wrong idea, I have nothing against you or anything like that.
Ok guys, here we go
Sorry that i weren't able to respond in the past two days, you already know why It was hard to find the time to fix that annoying FC bug when opening the questions list but i thought that was more important at that time then responding here since it renders the app useless.
Ok let's start

Should be fixed in the current version
good concept for an app, will probably be pretty fun when its finished, but right now the app is extremely unstable, sometimes it just exits right after I opened it, it always force closes when it tries to load the "by date" list in the "list of questions" section. The "by potsize" list usually works though that sometimes crashes too, in addition to all that the app seems to sometimes crash at completely random times.

There was an additional bug in the update code for the header of the main screen. Hopefully that is fixed now too and you won't experience those random FCs.

The password is hashed on your phone so that it never get's transmitted over the network in plain text and i can't see your plaintext password either. The email is stored as plaintext so that i can send you a mail if anything important is going on (like yesterdays mail about that critical bugfix). The backend of the app is hosted on GoogleAppEngine by the way. Feel free to suggest any other strategies on storing or transmitting values. The values that are stored for a user are: your activation token, an active flag, answer count, question count, key of your avatar in the gae blogstore, mail, nickname, pass (hash), and your QZRs.

And a question from my side:
I have also implement a function for sending mass in-app notifications (appear on your notification screen in the app). Which way to be informed about critical updates do you prefer? mail or in-app notification. In one of the next versions i will add an optional background service that shows incoming notification on the phone's notification bar, too.

as for the admob thing I'm guessing what todayist meant was that when the ad placeholder was displayed in the the top of your app it was wider than the app itself which allowed you to scroll within the admob object, but this only seems to happens with the placeholder ad, real ads seems to work as they should.
as for the notification thing I don't mind getting them by email, but there are a lot of people that probably do mind that, so if I were you I'd implement some preference thing that allowed a user to choose between email notifications and in app notifications.
I also have a couple of questions/feature requests:
first of all I think it would be nice it the person that has created a question would be able to actually see what people have answered on the question, that would be useful information to see whether or not the question was to hard or too easy.
in addition I'm wondering how you are going to stop people from screwing around with the questions, because as it is right now, you rely on the people creating questions to actually include and choose the right answer, somebody could easily screw people by simply choosing the wrong answer as the right answer, doing that could probably also be used cheat.
I also think that when a question is closed the users that answered on that question should be able to see what the right answer was, maybe you could even add a "report wrong answer" button that, if enough people pressed it would make a mod check whether the answer was actually correct, and if it wan't the people answering on the question should be refunded the game money that they bet on the question.
I know that would probably be a bit complicated but it would decrease the problem of people cheating by choosing the wrong answer as the right answer.
in addition to all that I have a question, its pretty obvious that acquiring QZRs is pretty important in this game (you even plan to allow people to buy QZRs using paypal and in-app purchase) but my question is, what is the point of the QZRs right now they can only be used to place bets, do you plan on adding some kind of store or reward stuff that can only be bught/unlocked by using QZR?

no problem
I do actually have some feedback about beta2 as well, primarily its seems like a good update, but there are still some things that bother me, first of all, after the beta2 update one of my questions seems to have become corrupted somehow.
The question I'm referring to is the "is the official name of android 3.1 icecream sandwich" question that I created under the user name mikael. The question has 2 answers, "True" and "False", but after the beta2 update my question now has 3 answers according to the pi-chart, the new option that suddenly appeared was "" in other word an empty string, currently 1 person has answered True, one has answered False, and 6 has answered "", which confused me since "" is not actually something you can select when you answer the question.
But I figured that out when I tried to close the answer, if I try to close the answer while the False otpion is selected the confirmation dialgue asks if I want to select "null" as the correct answer, the same happens if I try to select True as an answer, in other words both the true and the false answer point to the null string, which means that If anyone anwered the question after this bug occured their answer would be registered as null, instead of the option they actually selected, which expalins why 6 people apperantly answered "null". I have no idea what caused that bug, but I'm guessing its a database issue of some kind, so it something you will have to take a look at.
other than that I have another complaint, and I know that this is intentional but I think that allowing questions to stay live infinitely until they are closed is a bad idea, primarily because a lot of the questions seems to have been abandoned completely which means that everybody that answered on those questions basically just threw their game money away.
I think there should some time limit to when you have to close your question, something like 1 week or perhaps one month if you think that one week is too short. I have currently answered 7 questions on your app but only 2 of them has been closed, the other questions seem to have been abandoned by the question creator.
other than that though the app seems pretty good, I really appreciate the hard work you are putting into this app and I hope I don't put too much work on your shoulders with all of my complaints, questions and feature requests.

Yeah that really is a big problem that is bothering me for days now. beta3 (which will be released today) introduces the 3 other limit types (days, date, answers). Those will be fine and exactly what you are explaining. I am unsure if i should keep the unlimited option in the app. Do you think it would be a good idea to remove it completely?

Yesterday i was thinking about how to make the release to the market. I want the beta testers to have a bonus for their work and help. So this is what i have come up with for a possible release to the android market:
Reset all beta tester accounts
Give all beta tester accounts 50 bonus QZRs
Remove all answers from all questions
Keep the questions so that there are some initial release questions
Make those questions owned by my account so that abandoned questions won't be a problem.
Do you have any suggestions to this?

sounds pretty good to me, but if you are expecting a lot of new users and questions after making the app available on the market then wouldn't it be a good idea to get some extra moderators to moderate the questions? Maybe you should pick some of the beta testers to be mods. thats your choice though, other than that I can't think of anything else to do before you put the app on the market.
oh and btw I am still receiving "null" answers on some of my questions which probably means that there are still someone who use the old app, would it be possible to somehow block "null" answers on the server side, so that so that people who still use the old version would not be able to submit answers without updating the app.

RootMyTV is a user-friendly exploit for rooting/jailbreaking LG webOS smart TVs.
Website: RootMy.TV
GitHub: https://github.com/RootMyTV/RootMyTV.github.io
For further details, and a full writeup, please check out the GitHub repo.
Spoiler: Original pre-release post
TL;DR; If you want root on any* current WebOS LG TV, do not install updates for the time being, and wait patiently. If you're a developer or researcher, read the latest update below.
*The exploit requires "ThinQ" support, which seems to only be available on TVs running WebOS 4.0+. I will update this when we know more about which versions support it.
RootMy.TV is an 0-click (kinda) web-to-root exploit for WebOS.
Website (placeholder): RootMy.TV
GitHub (placeholder): github.com/DavidBuchanan314/RootMyTV
After this bug in Download Manager was published (which, on its own, allows rooting the WebOS emulator), I was motivated to find new bugs which can be combined with it, to get root on actual TVs.
Given the relatively severe impact of this exploit chain, its publication will have to wait at least until LG makes official patches available for the Download Manager bug. After that, I will be publishing the exploit, along with a full writeup.
During my research, I received invaluable advice and information from members of the openlgtv Discord server - I definitely couldn't have done this without them. Please join us, if you would like to assist with testing the exploit etc. in the hopefully-near future: https://discord.gg/9sqAgHVRhP
Update 2021/02/15:
LG claims to have fixed the Download Manager bug, but they haven't really. To motivate LG to actually patch the bug, I will be disclosing my exploit chain to them under a 30-day public disclosure deadline - after which, I will be publishing the exploit here. Assuming I send my disclosure to LG email tonight, that sets the RootMyTV "release date" at 2021/03/19.
Update 2021/03/18:
The release date is now 2021/03/21 - I have a few things I need to finish up...
Update 2021/03/23:
Sorry for the delays...
I am attaching a bare-bones vulnerability report and PoC for the exploit, which is enough to get you root. This "pre-release" is intended for developers and researchers. If you're not a developer or researcher, please be wait for the "full" release, which will hopefully arrive in the coming weeks. The final release will be more user friendly, and include a "Homebrew Channel". If you would like to contribute to development of the Homebrew ecosystem, please visit us on Discord.
Some notes/disclaimers about the exploit: (READ FIRST!!!)
- This will void your warranty, don't blame me if anything goes wrong etc. etc.
- Amazon's "google play store" link, described in the writeup, is currently broken. As a workaround, you can search for "google search" on Amazon, Click the top result, Click "developer info", then click the link to Google's privacy policy. From there, you can click the menu icon in the top-right and continue with the rest of the instructions.
- Something I forgot to mention in the report - you must update the value of the "HOST_PREFIX" variable in index.html, to point to your local webserver.
- If you were previously using Developer Mode, then overwriting `start-devmode.sh` will have broken devmode features like `ares-install`, and the jailed sshd. You can fix this by putting the old `start-devmode.sh` back again, with some edits.
- For some TVs that don't have the ThinQ login page, you can access an equivalent page via "Account Management" in the settings. This doesn't work on my TV (the amazon link opens in the web browser), but apparently it works on some models/versions.
- The current version of the exploit will give you a root telnet server, accessible on the default port (23), without authentication.

Is it possible to install Web OS FW of a LG Commercial Signage Display on to a matching Consumer Retail model? How?
I am the same model as your TV. However, as you mentioned, I searched for google search on Amazon and went in, and after that, I proceeded the same, but rooting did not work. Are there any other points where I can rooting?
Using com.webos.app.iot-thirdparty-login in webOS 4.9.1-53409 for this exploit doesn't seem to work anymore, because the app now seems to open all links in the web browser app instead of its own instance. No matter which link I tested, they all open the external web browser.
Update:
The underlying issue still exists though and I managed to use a slightly different method but the same privilege escalation method to get in anyways.

Perhaps you might share the approach you found so others don't struggle helplessly?
I had the same problem. After getting to the Amazon log in page, all links mentioned above opened in the web browser instead of within the ThinQ app. Eventually I tried entering non existent credentials into the Amazon login form, then after being prompted to enter a captcha, I again entered invalid credentials a second time. When shown the login form a third time I clicked the bottom link (can't remember what it was - maybe privacy or forgot password or similar) and this time the link opened within the ThinkQ app rather than an external browser, and I could then follow the rest of the exploit successfully.
Does rooting WebOS remove the DRM? Could someone check if Netflix is still working?
And if the DRM will be removed, is it possible to restore it by resetting it by it's factory defaults or a software update?
@retr0id awesome work! Have been waiting on this for a long time

Currently root exploit in the first post only exposes root unjailed telnet session and disables some telemetry. It does not affect any existing apps, unless content providers add explicit root detection. (which in of itself would require jail escape exploit on their part) Netflix seems to work fine so far on 2018-era webOS 3.8 LG TV.

If there really is a "0-click" exploit as promised, these steps become unnecessary.
Until then, anyone who knows the ropes should have no problem finding the way I mentioned. At least when you take a closer look at the source code of com.webos.app.iot-thirdparty-login. And if you have problems with this, you should probably leave this method alone anyway.
That's why I won't post any more details about it - at least for now.

I provided a way forward to others in my response. I followed it and it worked, so I shared it.
You simply turned up with no useful information, just to say "hey your instructions no longer work. I found a way round it. Not going to share". It would seem you're posting on entirely the wrong forum.

That's not true at all. The info I shared is that the vulnerability is still present in the latest firmware v05.00.30 of the 2019 models and that it's still possible to use the exploit.
I also said that I do not share the details "for now", depending on the "0-click" exploit status.

If someone can use this to make a custom firmware that adds back in the 120hz black frame insertion to the LG C9 (and maybe even older models) that would be amazing. LG removed the feature last minute despite it showing up in C9 reviews samples, but it did make it into the CX as OLED motion low and mid. I remember in some old interviews hearing that the feature is all algorithm based and could be added into older OLED TVs but they never did.

If I am not wrong the OS does verification , so trying to modify something will trigger it to not boot....

You're in luck. Just this week a user at AVSForum reported that you could enable Motion Pro on the C9/E9 with a simple command on the tv. The only disadvantage was that you need to execute this command with root privileges. Now that is where this thread comes in.
I've managed to get root access to my C9 and have executed the command and it works! Motion Pro low, medium and high is available and works at 120Hz.
