360 Camera Inoperable w/Skin - Essential Phone Accessories

FYI bought a carbon fiber look Sopiguard skin on eBay but the 360 camera wont boot up with the skin on.
At least it was only $6.

I have the same skin applied and the 360 camera is working fine. Did you double check the pins they appear to be spring loaded and maybe not sticking out far enough or they are stuck.
Either way I hope you get it to work but the same setup works fine on my device.

Mine also worked with the skin installed.

Peel the skin back camera works, put the skin back camera doesnt operate, light on the camera stays blue, never turns green.
Might as well get a case if its going to be like that.
Wonder if I should contact essential, the phone gets warm real quick with the 360 on it only seconds.

If this becomes an issue, couldn't you attempt to extend/thicken the contacts from under the skin using foil? Of course, don't connect the pins together. Use a separate piece of foil for each pin. Not sure if it would offer enough of a connection, though.

Same here. The blue light is up but the cam app doesn't launch. Essential support was informed.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the only case available.
I figured if I have to peel the skin back to use the camera I might as well have a case on it.

https://vivamadridamerica.com/product-category/device/essential/

You could always notch the skin?

I applied the Skinomi carbon fiber, tested several times with the 360cam. No issues.

Yup can confirm camera does not boot past blue with a dbrand dragon skin. Bummer. Thinking I am going to cut out an outline for camera on the skin.

Looks like this may be a random issue.
Some have the issue, some dont.
I'm guessing maybe the two posts on some 360 cameras dont stick out quite as far ?

This depends on the thickness of the rear cover. If the camera's pins are not pressed, it does not work.

I have the black titanium skin and the camera only fully connects and fires up the camera up maybe 1 in 10 times. It's not a big deal as I doubt I'll ever actually use the camera. Mainly only got it because it was $50 and I thought of it as an investment in my resale value.

Maybe try rebooting your phone? My camera would do this sometimes before applying my dBrand and rebooting would fix it..

Tried that.
Only way to get it to work is peel the skin back.
So I bought one of the Viva Madrid America cases.
I figured if I cant use it with protection I might as well get a case.
My guess is some cameras have slightly shorter contact posts, although its just a guess, I may be the most technically challenged person in here....

I ordered the sopiguard in oak camera works fine.

I got a skin from I can't remember it was a wood oak one, skinomi? It was on amazon. THe 360 camera still works.
I think it depends on what kind of skin it is. Some skins like the brushed metal kinds actually do have metal in them so they will interfere. The other 3m dinoc also tend to be a bit thicker and might not allow proper pin connection.
Push comes to shove you can easily trace the camera, and then cut it with an exacto knife or a razor blade. If your hand is steady enough you can do it on the phone. If not the skins are reusable. Just make sure to yank on them instead of pull up slowly. I know it's counter intuitive, but that's how these materials work. I've been using them for nearly two decades now.

Carbon fiber laminate replacement for rear glass

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share a recent modification done to my Nexus 4. Like many people my rear glass basically spontaneously cracked in a spiderweb pattern across the entire surface of the rear glass. Frustrated I looked and looked for a replacement back possibly made of plastic or some other material...anything but glass!
Unfortunately I could not find what I was after, so I ordered a Nexus 4 rear housing with glass. Once it arrived and installed everything was great except I was constantly worried about the glass shattering again. Now that I had the original back off I could experiment a bit. It took me quite a while to chip all the glass shards away. Using a heat gun softened the adhesive and made it a lot easier. Also the wireless charging coil gave extra frustration to the glass removal, as its flexible and quite fragile.
Eventually all the glass was removed. At first I was thinking of going with wood, but after working with a veneer of Brazilian rosewood I realized that the wood was so thin that it was going to be a real pain to work with to get a precision form.
I really like the look of carbon fiber so I searched and found a piece of carbon fiber laminate 1/32" thick (.030" when measured). It came 3" wide and 12" long. I rough cut the basic shape with a band saw and then sanded the edge down to a 2.445" width. I then used a fine hand file to create the arched corners and ends. Eventually I got the perfect shape and then used a carbide end mill to create the holes for camera, flash and speaker holes. I also used a bit larger end-mill to make an inset on the rear side of the camera hole to drop in a new lens protector so that it would end up flush and not interfere with the camera once I installed it.
Finally I used some really nice double sided 3M 468 MP adhesive to bond the new back to the housing.
I was curious about heat dispersion, so I ran the phone through a few stress tests with both the glass and the laminate and the laminate actually came back with a slightly cooler result. So basically without strict data collecting I'd say my concern about heat is null.
I was really pleased with the results and wanted to share. Photo's don't quite do it justice like seeing in person. As you shift the phone in light there is a very dynamic weaved pattern reflecting similar but more intensely that the original glass. It's not as scratch resistant as the original glass but that was not exactly impervious to scratches either. I'm happy knowing there is basically zero chance of shattering. believe me I tried on a scrap piece.
That looks really nice! Be aware that carbon fiber will block/attenuate some signals like WiFi.

Hmm, I'll do a comparison next to my coworkers Nexus and find out if there's a difference.
Edit: I was not able to notice any discernable difference in signal strength on WiFi or the cell radio in comparison. Basically identical to the non-modded Nexus in signal strength and speed tests. Bluetooth works as it should. I have not tested NFC yet but I will when I get the opportunity.

Really like what you've done with your nexus 4. Only thing is, when it broke in the first place, why didn't you just put a dbrand vinyl on the back? They look amazing, fit perfectly and it's not too expensive.

Thanks. I did put something similar over it but unfortunately there was a crack in the glass right above the camera lens and light would refract through causing photos to come out terrible. Having kids and a new baby just arriving, I can't live without those spontaneous photos when needed on the spot. Otherwise I would have left it with the skin.
Oh and the carbon fiber laminate was only $10.

If you plan to keep the phone a while, or resell it, keep the carbon fiber out of the sunlight. Unless they put some sort of UV protection on it? It will fade otherwise.
Looks great though. I have always been a fan of CF. I def give you a +10 for the project.

I get a hard on every time I see carbon fiber Is there a glossy coat over it or is it just the CF so that you can feel the texture? I am quite curious to see the radio reception test results. If they turn out to be minor, please let me know how much you would charge to make one for me. If only I had such skills

Generally in a carbon fiber laminate the weave is sandwiched between layers of epoxy to hold its form. This provides a smooth semi-glossy surface which also adds to the optical effect of the light bending as your viewing angle changes. There is a very, very subtle texture to it but its mostly smooth in characteristic.
So far I have not noticed a difference in radio reception, I will continue testing. If I had a second nexus with me it would be easy. There are so many environmental factors that make it nearly impossible to compare any current results with the previous glass back.

Yeah I know about the epoxy. I have had car parts molded out of CF. However, some case manufacturers provide an extra glossy layer over the finished product (which I am not a big fan of). But it seems its not the case here.
I am wondering what would happen if the laminate were to be glued to the glass directly. Any ideas?

Definitely possible. It would just thicken the phone by about 1/32" which would probably make it a little less than even with the official bumper edge. I would bevel the outer edge in that case so it smooths out with the edge of the phone. I used a rubber based back like this at first with a nice grip to it. It worked great. The only issue i had was was a crack over my camera lens so the glass ultimately needed to be removed.
They make a special epoxy glue specifically for this but the double sided adhesive I used works great. Its more of a gummy adhesive than a tape so it conforms a bit and has great yield strength.

I'm impressed, looks very clean. Makes more sense than spending money on another glass back.

Case that does not cover the back bump/visor at all?

So in looking for a case for my Graphite 6P I've come to the conclusion that I'd like a case that left the whole black bar open on the back. There's obviously a lot going on as far as camera, flash, lasers, NFC, and antennas in there. Also the more I see the professional pictures of the device the more I enjoy the unique design feature.
Anyone found a case that leaves the whole bump open?

This does cover the black bar partially... however, its from Google's store so I'm sure its a safe buy. On the pricey side, but I think it looks very neat.
Nexus 6P case
I also ordered the graphite. Originally ordered the 5X, then saw the graphic with the differences between the 2 phones and went back and cancelled my original purchase and got the 6P instead.
The folio case on the store thats not available yet does not cover the bar at all.
The original renders of the Moko case showed it not having anything across the entire visor, which was one reason I ordered it. I just received it today and it matches the current images on Amazon, which were updated after I ordered. I can imagine leaving that glass exposed might not have been the best idea, but the way it is now still looks ok, I guess. It looks like it will have plenty of room for the laser module, but that's still to be seen once I have my phone in hand.
Disappointing, I think it can be adequately protected and it's GG4 to boot. I'll keep looking. Some no name case company will make it eventually.

Yeah, that would be no good cutting off the front. Since one of the two first party cases leaves the visor exposed, I'm sure plenty of third party cases will follow suit. It's a very distinct design cue on the phone, and I'm sure your not the only one that wants to show it off :cyclops:

Change Side Bumpers

Since it appears that LG makes it pretty easy to teardown this phone it would be cool to change out the bumpers for smaller ones. lol... (I don't plan on dropping mine).
https://youtu.be/7N_mGT-P1ZA
Only thing I was on the fence about this phone was that T-Mobile only has black. (I know, I'm a stickler.)
Max's video really showed you how easy it is to teardown and replace with other colored parts later when available.
Actually I might keep the black and just go for the rose gold rails and camera ring from the white color.
As for slimmer rails I think if you use a dremel you could shave off a few mm possibly? Similar to what a few LG G Watch R users did to get rid of the cheap black paint.
Black and gold would have the most "premium" look. Now hopefully people will start breaking their new phones, so more replacement parts become available lol. Or, maybe the people that got review units will sell parts? Here's hoping.
I was actually thinking yesterday after seeing Max video to just change bars to gold.... And leave black... But not rose gold pure yellow gold... Sexy sexy... I saved an eBay search to find them

I'm not sure that's 100% a good idea. For one, we already know the fingerprint sensor only works when you're contacting the side bumpers. Who knows what else might stop working if you disconnect or replace them? The antennas, maybe?

Best I can do. As I said, it's very minor. It looks like a glint in the corner, but it is wear. No drops, identical on opposite corner. Like the earliest stage of holster wear on the slide of a carry pistol.

Plasti dip is amazing.. Never thought to use it for the rails of the phone, that would be very cool. Best thing is, if you grow tired of the dip want to change color etc you can just make a small cut through the dip (most people use something like a standard screwdriver or a razor) and peels right off.
I might look into this, I'd love a dark blue on my bumpers to go with the black phone... Oooh...
I don't believe I will want to take down the phone to do it though. May look into doing so without it.

I bought the white intending to buy black back cover and simply aplying skinomi decals in black carbon fiber to the white parts in front. Actually the decals are on the way already. I have applied Di-Noc carbon wrap to the back of the clear Ringke cover because it was a finger print magnet. But the cover weighs down the phone too much for my liking on what is already a heavy phone compared to my feather light Note 3.
As for the Rose gold rails, I have clear wrap for cars left over. I cover them with that before the plating wears off or I scratch it. Man those things weigh down this phone. I have a cramp by the end of the day.
I would be cool if I could take them off, and still have a case. the side bards only make the phone wider. It seems it would be easier to hold without the metal bars, that are nothing more than cosmetic additions.
Yes they are big... But just a few screws holding them on. I could see the phone modding scene take off with custom bumpers. Flat ones would be a great first entry. Also a stylus bumper could be added to either side, with a thin styla style that clips on or slides in.

Dbrand Skins are out..!!

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago asking if and when will they put out some skins for the G5. I got a reply a few days later saying they are definitely planning to support the G5 but that there were "a couple of other more in-demand devices taking priority at the moment". I don't know what those could have been. Both Samsung devices were already out and the HTC 10 wasn't even announced yet... Anyway, they're finally here for the G5!!
Nice... Debating getting one with a black leather back with the Yellow camera and back accent pieces.
i only want to cover up the LG logo, so it will be much cheaper for me

Been using it fine with a thinner wood dBrand skin. Not sure if presumably thicker ones like Dragon skin would work.
You'll notice the top lip of the cam plus may slightly rest above back of the phone as it is angled up and away by the extra thickness. However it stays firm in place still during use, can't feel the difference.

I ordered this case and immediately had horrible signal issues. I've e-mailed the seller asking if there's a solution. It's too bad to use as a phone, though wifi was not blocked at all. Normally I have strong LTE in my house but it's unusable with the case on.

to each their own... but gawd, that's ugly.
I bought it when it first went up, before their description made it clear it was steel, I was hoping for a thin metal slip. The case is heavy as hell, and the built in screen protector traps pocket lint between the screen protector and screen. The case is held on with 6 hex screws, which worked, but made it even heavier.
It did muffle sound a little, as to radio...I'm just switching to Ting with GSM from Sprint with my phone. I was worried for a bit that my phone was the issue, but a girl who has a galaxy phone has all the same signal issues I did on Sprint. I'll let you know of mine is better, and how GSM is impacted by the case later.

I should also mention, like the Tudia, it made my side access worse. I use Lucid launcher specifically for the left side slide out favorite apps, these were really hard to activate on both this case, and the Tudia. I also use a pie fromthe right side, this was similarly hard to trigger, but at least I could customize the trigger width to accommodate the massive bearth.
Here is another new case on Amazon.

The shortcut leads to the phone rather than a case.

That doesn't look like a quality case to me. The back looks like plastic. But there aren't a lot of cases compatible with the 360 Camera so if you want specifically to use that feature it's probably worth taking the chance since the case is so cheap. But if you don't care about the 360 Camera there are clearly way better choices.

I bought it.
It actually isn't cheap feeling.
Soft touch.
Pretty heavy.
Secures on the phone pretty well.
Looks like it will protect the phone in a drop.
It does add bulk.
The flip down for the camera is pretty cool.
The opening on the back for the camera is large since the case is so deep.
The fingerprint sensor hole is also large because they made it to clear the camera opening without leaving a small piece of TPU inside.
Overall I like it for the ~$10 I paid.
It is either this or naked.
I bought it as well.
Doesn't feel cheap to me.
Adds a decent amount of bulk to the phone but not too much.
The flip down feels pretty sturdy and hopefully it won't loosen over time.
It has a nice feel to it. Soft but not slick. Sort of rubberized.
I've been using the first Tudia case that came out for this phone for awhile now and it's fine most of the time. But when I do use the 360 lens it is a hassle. Having to peel the case off. Hopefully this fixes that problem.

I tried it yesterday and the flip down works fine.
It's a bit stiff to latch and unlatch, but it does solve the 360 camera issue.
No more case removal! It also means that those screen protectors that glue around the edges will bel see likely to lift.
I still haven't decided if I want to use LOCA to attach a screen protector to my phone.
