Android O - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

Does anyone have any idea when it will start getting pushed out? I read online Samsung is notorious for being slow on updates but have yet to experience this.

Is froyo going to happen?

I am worried about a potential Behold II situation here. This phone has been out internationally for months and we still have no custom roms of 2.2, or even 2.1 only modified versions of Sammys stock.
Are there differences structurally with samsung's programming and files structure that preclude the use of custom roms? I want one of these galaxy s phones but I am concerned that there is no development. What is going on with theses phones?
Random people around the interwebs are saying that the Galxay S should get it's 2.2 update in August sometime.
Not sure how solid their sources are. Once they get it, then AT&T has to get a hold of it and modify it, that will take a few more months I'm sure.
I do not think there is anything stopping chefs from making modified ROMs. They just need to do it. I think some are waiting for 2.2 to come out as it is a much better base for a ROM performance wise.
Some are saying the the bootloader is not locked, which makes it even easier. Now that people can reliably flash back to the stock ROM things should pick up.
I think having 512 MB of RAM is proof enough that 2.2 support will be coming. Otherwise they could have cut the RAM in half and saved money on their end.
Samsung has confirmed many times that 2.2 is coming, and I do believe that. What probably won't happen is 3.0 which this phone should be capable of handling as well (judging from system requirements mentioned to this point). That's where our guys will get to work and try to cook something up.
If someone (not Samsung) can port 2.2 to it, then it bodes well for 3.0...
I'm not worried about 2.2 (Samsung is bringing that, at least)... What worries me is 3.0
Samsung has confirmed that 2.2 is coming, well to the international version at least. They have never specifically said if its coming for T-mo or AT&T versions. In all honesty I'm more concerned with getting Gingerbread. As slack as Samsung is about releasing software updates, this has me worried a lot. Also, I'm wondering if samsung will ever even fix the GPS. Its been months and no official word yet. You read all these posts in here "samsung is aware and are workign on it." But who has said this in an official capacity, I dont want to hear opinions.
Whats stopping ROM chefs? The lack of open source info on the phone. Samsung has not released any of the driver info that is necessary to make custom ROM's. Until that happens or someone inside samsung leaks its, no custom ROM's.
There are already Captivate units in testing with FroYo and have been before release. Unfortunately, I doubt AT&T will be in any rush to approve it...
When I first got the Captivate, I thought it would be tough going back, but I haven't really missed anything. The Captivate Exchange client supports calendar sync (a big issue with my Android 2.1 Nexus One), the browser is fast enough for my needs and I really haven't noticed any slowdowns that the new JIT JVM would have helped much. The only things I really miss at all are the upgraded market app and Flash 10.1. Even those aren't that critical.

Android on playbook, thoughts?

So i was given a playbook. Honestly i think its terrible. Not that the interface or os is bad. Its just lacking everything that i would use it for.
As anyone who has tinkered a bit with a playbook knows, its possible to run converted playbook aps and get the market working. With many restrictions
I assume based on the lack of information on this that no one has actually gotten any version of android running on it. I dont mean an emulator or app. What im curious about is completely removing the rim software and getting android on it.
Might be impossible i dont know.
Does anyone know of any projects that are trying to accomplish this, or is it technically/ theoretically possible?
Just curious
Thanks
kyle
I wondered the same thing after seeing this: http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/12/01/03/1323244/rims-playbook-on-clearance
First thing I did, after going to check out the Rim hardware specs and deal information, was come here to XDA to see if there was a Rim Playbook project or forum yet lol. Sure there will be soon with the hardware so much cheaper now.

How come so little interest on getting Android OS running on an iPhone?

Whenever I get into a debate with my friends over iPhone vs. Android, I always point out that I don't have an issue with the devices themselves, I just simply find Android OS to be far better than iOS, which I won't go into now.
While I love my GS3, I never thought the iPhone was a bad device, although the screen is a little small.
Is it possible to port Jelly Bean to an iPhone 5? I think that would be kind of sick. I searched around for a thread but did not see anything beyond a port that was on an iPhone 3G. Is it something specific that prevents this from happening, such as a locked bootloader, different kernels, etc?
And as an Android user, would any of you ever be interested in something like this?
And while I imagine this is a pretty stupid question I hope someone might be able to entertain this. Thanks.

What is Alcatel's Android Update History?

I just pre-ordered the phone and I'm curious what the long term support is going to be like. I did some googling and didn't really find any solid evidence that they will support the phone after release.
Has anyone owned their products in the past and received major Android upgrades?
They are not up to par with Motorola or anything, but I googled and was able to find an old link explaining how to upgrade to ICS for a prior phone:
http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/support/faq/ot-995ics-fota.html
Hopefully since this is their flagship phone, there are some developers that will work on bringing updates to the phone
Edit:
Also found confirmation of updates from the SVP of US branch an hour or two ago: http://androidandme.com/2015/05/new...l-3-launch-updates-and-giveaway-announcement/
We’re committed to ensuring that we always have the very best user experience possible and plan to have Idol 3 software updates available to consumers via over-the-air updates. Timing on these updates will be on a rolling basis as needed.

Do you know if, usually, with Alcatel on xda, we may have, at least, a rooted device + a custom recovery to make backups...?
That's what I'd like to know before I purchase one.

Android m question

Has anybody gotten the update to android 6.0 aka android m yet? If not do you know when we will get it?
No sprint users have gotten marshmallow yet. No one knows the date, it was leaked to becoming in december, that got pushed back to january 2016, but really no one knows for sure.
Ok thanks for the info
Eta is first quarter. Could be January or several months away. We won't know until it gets here.
I thinking it has to be releases to note 5 directly first, then sprint will get it and test it. I could be wrong though.
