Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What will I have to do if I get an update to Andromeda from Play Store?
A: Reboot your device, then rerun your desktop client. This ensures the background service is using the latest code!
Q: What happens if Substratum loads up to a blurry window saying "falling back to rooted mode"?
A: This means that Andromeda's client does not want to serve you, meaning that you probably are running an unlicensed/modified copy.
Q: I am pressing the Substratum icon but it closes immediately! What gives?!
A: Rerun the Andromeda client and try again.
Q: If I reboot, will I lose this connection with the Andromeda Desktop client?
A: Yes, to keep the device safe, Google has ensured that elevated privileges using the shell will be completely disabled at boot.
Q: If I reboot, will my overlays remain enabled/disabled as I left them before I rebooted?
A: Yes
Q: Are systemwide fonts supported?
A: No
Q: Are bootanimations themable?
A: No
Q: What does it mean if it says "Connected" but Substratum keeps closing abruptly?
A: Your connection is not fully opened, so a reboot will be required. Reboot, and then rerun Andromeda to fix this!
Q: Sometimes when I unplug, it will disconnect Andromeda! What gives?
A: This is a bug with ADB and certain devices and computers. You can try another architecture like Windows 10, or Mac OS X, but some custom ROMs may interfere with this, as @MishaalRahman confirmed, certain hacked together ROMs may cause the shell to close almost every time.
Q: What will I need to provide if I run into a crash?
A: A full logcat, obtainable using this guide (unrooted): https://www.xda-developers.com/guide-sending-a-logcat-to-help-debug-your-favorite-app/

Thank you so much. Has anyone tried this with the Google Pixel yet?
I really want to try it out but don't want to kill my phone.

How to use THE FAST! BlueStack as your alternate Android development emulator

You can do this VERY EASY! but I'll recommend that you first install Launcher Pro or ADW (you can sync the app using the BlueStacks Android app) then set as your default home. Once you have done that you can open Launcher Pro trough the gadget at any time.
Then open Eclipse go to your "Device Manage" tab and under "Android Remote Device" add a new entry like this:
Name: (whatever you want to name it)
Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 5555
And you are done! BlueStacks is WAYYYYYYYYYY faster to lunch apps that the regular android emulator. I did a small app for testing/debug and it installed/lunch/debug just fine on BlueStacks.
I cant for the life of me find the device manager could you explain how to get it to appear?

On the Eclipse menu go to:
- "Window", "Show View", "Other..."
- Then type on the entry text box "Device". It should show under the "Sequoyah" folder.
Today I notice that it automatically added "localhost:5555" under "Android Remote Device" next to my manually added entry and the Eclipse DDMS Console was giving me some errors. I restarted BlueStacks and everything seems to be ok now (the automatic added entry is gone now and no more errors too). Lucky that a BlueStacks restart is SUPER fast!

I don't found Device Manager in Android Remote Device in Eclipse, anyone can help me some guides ?
Hi,
how do you install your homemade app for testing/debugging (need official certificate) ? Your bluestacks player seems to be windowed ? how do you make that ? thanks...
Hello!
I'm an artist on an Android project and have very little knowledge on the technical side of things.
Any chance you could expand this how-to a bit more in-depth, as I have trouble even finding "Device Manager" and don't know what Launcher Pro and ADW do and where to find them.
I'd really appreciate it!
It really works! Great! Thanks.
I struggled over this for an hour, because I could not see Device Manager tab in Eclipse. So i downloaded MotoDev Studio (It is SDK + Eclipse + all plugins needed) and now i run bluestack smoothly
More precise way to do this:
1. Download and install BlueStack
2. Download and install MotoDev Studio (Its free)
3. Download Launcher pro or ADW launcher .apk
4. Right click on the .apk, select "open with", "Browse"
go to C:\Program Files (x86)\BlueStacks (for 64bit system)
or
go to C:\Program Files\BlueStacks (for 32bit system)
and select HD-ApkHandler.exe
Launcher should be installed after a moment.
5. Open MotoDev
6. select Device Managment tab
7. Right click on Android Remote Device and click New...
8. Name it like you want, for example "BlueStack"
9. fill Host and Port boxes with
Host: 127.0.0.1
Port: 5555
10. Click OK
Now everything should work. You can close MotoDev and try to open BlueStack and then select Launcher. Now bluestack is fast as native android device and games run smooth Thx to riveraju
Must come back here when I have time to read lol thanks a lot for this man. I installed the ask last June and still haven't gotten the emulator to work XD

Is this still a working method? I'm using a Mac and have just downloaded Bluestacks but I can't even connect to it through adb nor it shows up under my device list.
Any other method to debug my app through Bluestacks with a Mac?
Do you Any tricks to emulate system apps?
Sent from my Nokia 3210 using xda app-developers app
Hey guys,
so I installed BlueStacks as I already had Eclipse installed and "kinda" followed the guides to this method.
I start Bluestacks player and then I start eclipse and look at the device tab and see this after opening Blood Brothers:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lja2rj4wziycsgq/eclipse.png
Many players say that it should be faster after doing this but I see no difference to playing without Eclipse. Am I missing something, a command or something? Or is that all there is, Eclipse is now connected and running with Bluestacks?
fios
Good stuff, it sped it up just barely to handle the verizon fios mobile tv app. now i can watch live tv on my laptop
is there an alternative to this like regitry hack? I mean I have to download Eclipse or MotoDev which is around 200 mb of size just to put this trick?

Thanks
Instead of searching for device management tab you can simply enter
adb connect 127.0.0.1
after starting bluestacks...
bluestacks certificates
Have you managed to install new certificates on Bluestacks ? Seems to me like Security/Credential Storage menu is completely missing as well as other features. I understand that this is just an emulator but we need many other features for development.

[APP][2.0.1+][Root] Samba Filesharing Server for Android [Play & Dev builds]

[Page migrated from the previous thread for this APP at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8239139#post8239139 ]
Access the external storage card in your Android device over wifi / network as a SMB / Windows shared folder.
This app requires your device to already have:
* root access.
* Superuser 2.3.6.2 or later, from Android Market (may work with other Android 'su' implementations but I havent tested with many others).
Installation
* Install the current Google Play version
* A Development version is also available (see below).
On the first run, make sure you catch the SuperUser Auth request to allow the Samba Filesharing app root access.
Also, the first run will be a bit slow, the app has to unpack some additional binaries into its private data space.
GPL: Based on the awesome UNIX http://www.samba.org/ project - Samba GPL licensing information including source code modification details are included in the app. Once installed go to Menu -> Settings -> About.

If you like this app, please consider making a small donation. Not to me, but to one of the charities I strongly support: Cancer Research, or Animal Welfare.
Larest Dev build attached below, and includes some additional customisable options for new features in development, and manual edits to the smb.conf (use at your own peril, but please report successes etc back here)
- To install: unzip, and either:
- ADB: adb install SambaFilesharing<version>.apk
- FileManager: Copy the APK to /sdcard on your device, then launch with a filemanager program (like Astro).
(The below SambaFilesharing-dev-130413.zip is the the Google Play 140525 version with extra dev options turned on )
Good idea JC, allows you to control the FAQ info in the first post directly. Welcome back again too.
Andre
Neither the Play Store nor the dev build are working for me. When I try to input a password I get "Error changing password There was an error updating the password file - please check logcat" Also, when I try to do the "Uninstall Samba Filesharing" from the setting menu, it crashes (popup "Unfortunately Samba Filesharing has stopped.") I am using Moto X, Android 4.4.3. I"ve been using this SAMBA for years, not having it working now is very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
What version superuser do you use?
Can you generate & send me a support log right after the problem occurs (PM me, pls dont post it here) and i'll take a look.
- jc
Hi jimmy, thanx for new version, but there are two problems at least:
1.) I can not enable second shared folder
2.) Failed to create support log
Device: i9300
Rom: cm11 latest nightly
My guess for logfile would be that you have to create it in sdcard/android/data/com.funkyfresh.samba/ as kitkat restricts access to sdcard for apps.
Second shared folder is detected to be in mnt/media_rw/sdcard1 but this locarion is not present. It is located in mnt/ExtSdCard
Can I check, I'm already running 130413 (dev) - is it really exactly the same as the newer 140525, apart from the Don't Save Config feature? Just seems a long gap, I assumed 140525 had some other changes?

Same problem here
I use cyanogenmod 11 M7 (Android 4.4.3) and I can't get it working. I have the same problems as FadeFx and MyronAz. I enabled ART instead of Dalvik. Can it be related?
My device is unlocked and rooted.
The SU app is the one included in CyanogenMod. Do I need to install SuperSU?
Does anyone has a fix for this?
Thank you
I am also using ART.
I was originally using SuperSU. I tried switching to CM Superuser, didn't make any difference. Stock ROM (4.4.3, Moto X), rooted of course.
Seems not related, as i use dalvik

The solution
I found a solution!
The problem is related to the shared folder "/storage/emulated/0" which doesn't exists through samba (don't ask me why! ).
Unfortunately, we cannot change this shared folder path in "Samba FileSharing" but if you download the application "Sambadroid" you will be able to change it to "/storage/sdcard0" and it will work!
I hope this will help you guys!

When you say "it will work", you mean Sambadroid will work, not SAMBA, correct?
For me, Sambadroid worked even without changing the share. I was not able to access the share by it's name, but was able to using the IP address.

I meant SambaDroid will allow you to access your data thru Samba protocol.
If you can't access the share by the name, check if your computer is configured with the same workgroup as in SambaDroid's settings. If not, change it in SambaDroid's options.

The workgroup is the same in both devices. The Sambadroid device does show up in the network list on the pc but when I try to access it I get an error. It's not that big a deal, I can just use the quad.
I recall reading somewhere that Windows 7 doesn't like non-password guest accounts for SMB. I thought maybe changing the user account in Sambadroid to one requiring a password might help. It didn't make any difference. Interestingly I still had access using the quad, without a password!
What OpSys are you using untroll?
Please dont discuss sambadroid here, as the dj in our vilage disco used to say back then: dont smoke on my dancefloor, i dont dance in your ashtrays either...

And btw, you can change the shared path and even ad multiple shares in samba filesharing by manually editing smb.conf

Introduction:
We can all agree with the fact that the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is one of the most important tools when it comes to developing for android, uninstalling bloatware, flashing recoveries, flashing custom roms, and changing the way our Android devices work entirely. However, if you want ADB you have to download the entire SDK just to use a few files. Well this tool solves this issue. Entirely based on and inspired by Snoop05's 15 Seconds ADB Installer, this tool includes a few features he was planning on adding but never got around to adding. This is the 15 Seconds ADB Installer Reborn!
Features:
Built-in Updater - A powerful and stable built-in updater insures you with the latest updates for ADB/Fastboot, the installer itself, and Google Drivers.
Compact and Light - Coming in at only 10MB the installer is light, portable, reliable, and powerful!
Unique UI - Instead of being text based the UI is interactive via buttons.
Safe and Reliable - Programmed in pure batch, and being open source you can view the code at anytime!
Downloads:
Version 1.0 - Download - Mirror #1 - Mirror #2
Version 2.0 - Download - Mirror #1 - Mirror #2
Installation instructions:
To install download the latest version from the links below and launch it (You will need Administrative rights to install). From here all you have to do is follow the instructions given by the installer to install ADB/Fastboot, and Google Drivers.
Changelog:
Version 2.0
Merged updater with main script.
Improved updates UI.
Improved update speed.
Improved main menu UI.
Added the option to skip installing ADB if you want to install drivers only.
Added toast notifications to update UI.

No problem! Hope you enjoy the new tool! Have a fantastic day friend!
So a while back I installed minimal adb, worked great for about 10 min because the program I was using at the time wouldn't work with that adb library. So began a journey of getting different versions of adb and in doing so my %PATH% was starting to get a little embarrassing. So one day I decided to clean it up by misclicking and deleting the entire entry... Since that day I was unable to get ADB/Fastboot working 100%. It worked but would just give errors all over saying stupid things like ADB not found and such even though all the commands worked. I tried multiple installers, cleaners and spend hours adding entries to my user and system environment settings... I just happened to see this today and figured what the heck, it can't get much worse so ill try it... seconds later I can now use ADB without having to write extra command line crap to ignore/silence errors. The funny part though is everything this does I had done manually but somehow it worked with this....
Thanks I appreciate it
Great tool and packaging.
Actually very clever usage of batch features, I didn't know buttons could be emulated in that way.
Is this installer available also on github?

Thanks! The button aspect actually isn't a native batch feature, the buttons are injected into cmd through the use of C# and a few hybrid batch files.
Unfortunately, the installer isn't available on Github... but I can add it if you'd like.

Thanks, I appreciate it

doesnt this tool supposed to download latest adb drivers ?

Thanks! The button aspect actually isn't a native batch feature, the buttons are injected into cmd through the use of C# and a few hybrid batch files.
Unfortunately, the installer isn't available on Github... but I can add it if you'd like.

I just took the 2.0 installer, and updated it with the latest drivers/adb/fastboot and repackaged it, and added 2.1 to keep track of changes.

agreed, but that may be hard, because Google doesn't give direct links, you have to accept ToS before downloading. So manually is the next best option.

Well the installer is a script basically, it pulls files from gdrives but I don't think those are current. I'm sure there is a way to download the latest from google direcly and install it, but my scripting skills haven't reached that stage as yet.

This is my daily driver that I have decided to share. With the increase of big tech and government overreach in our lives, I felt more of a desire to move away from Google and the similar. Hotdogb isn't supported by other similar OS' so built this from microG/LineageOS source and is fully functional.
Based on Android 11

05.09.2021 - Updated to LineageOS nightly 05.09.2021. Full changelog can be found at https://download.lineageos.org/hotdogb/changes.
05.05.2021 - Initial Release.
What is this?
This is LineageOS with all closed-source binary Google blobs removed and replaced with microG. I.E no Play services or GAPPS. UnifiedNLP is used as networking location provider vice Google's NLP. F-Droid is installed by default providing alternative app store. However, with Aurora store you can still install Google Play store apps with ease (requires additional installations).
Installation
Since this is a fork of LineageOS you can follow the same installation guide they provide here. Just ensure you are on Lineage recovery and ready to sideload LineageOS, use our ROM for that step.
Issues
None known. Post below if you have any.
Post Installation
- open the microG app --> Self-Check sections are successful.
Location services
- By default, MozillaNlpbackend, which uses Mozilla location service and NominatimNlpBackend, which uses Mapquest's Noninatim service; are disabled by default. Open microG app --> Location modules and enable whichever ones you prefer. Afterwards reboot device.
Other information
Google Play Store Alternative
If you want full access to normal android Play Store apps do the following:
Open F-Droid app. Search for Aurora Store and install. Once opened select the appropriate option, generally option #1 will be the most common used with this ROM as long as it has not been modified by the user. Once setup you will have access to all applications as normal.
Some apps require play services and I cannot use them, please help!
This will require both SU and Magisk installed, which is not provided in our base rom. Once you have achieved SU with Magisk you will need to read over and install NanoDroid which can be found here XDA| Website.

Thanks for posting, I was looking to switch over to microG now with LOS 18.1 for hotdogb
Just wanna confirm, will these builds support OTA updater/dirty flashing for updates?

You will be able to dirty flash future updates similiar to LOS. Just be aware if you have modded any system files i.e. NanoDroid system install vice using Magisk; then you will have to reapply after dirty flash.
I'm working on OTA updates in the next release, just haven't set the hosting up at the moment.
Can I flash this right over top of the Official Lineage for HotdogB, or do I have to go stock 1st?
Thanks

I would recommend loading recovery Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset. Dirty flash might work, but I have not tested it. It also may come with unwanted consequences.

I was going to factory reset anyways, since I never really made the Official Lineage a daily driver. I was really waiting for MicroG before I went all out.
Thanks for the effort.
All installed, and all the boxes are checked in MicroG! Thanks!

No worries, I added the boot.img in case anyone wants to patch with Magisk. I had to do so and also install NanoDroid as a Magisk module to use a few apps that were expecting play store services.

I ended up using a boot.img that I had already patched in LOS Official.
Do you have a link or a download for the NanoDroid. It does not show up in the Magisk Module search?

Once you go with MicroG you are out of the Google Eco System. And dont try to log in as they may wipe out your email and cancel you. I just imported my contacts, as suggested.

It is linked in my initial post.
I managed to get wear working, but if I open the app it tells me to get it from the playstore, and breaks connection to my watch.

Use MicroG to be the go-between for Google eco. You can login through MicroG if you have an app that is in need of it and MicroG will be the in-between.

I heard it is against the terms, so it is safe to log into microg and get the apps that you paid for?

Of course its against their terms and you can login, but there is always the risk your account is banned. Though I have never had an issue.
If you're weary you can always make a separate Google account and use to try it out.

How To Guide Remap assistant button

I did not make this, I just compiled the latest version (higher than 0.6.0) (which hasn't been done yet):
GitHub - ivaniskandar/shouko: Xpand the feature set of your Android!
Xpand the feature set of your Android! Contribute to ivaniskandar/shouko development by creating an account on GitHub.

You need to execute this after installing if you want to remap (the app walks you through this):
adb shell pm grant xyz.ivaniskandar.shouko android.permission.READ_LOGS
If you need adb, turn on developer options, enable usb debugging and download this:

No, it will flicker up for a short period of time since i think the software uses the assistant activation as a trigger for your action.
I have the video pro app installed and if I set the assistant button to open the app, it crashes the app completely I have uninstall and reinstall it for it to work again.

I have the Xperia 1 iii. I used this to remap the button = https://github.com/ivaniskandar/shouko/releases/tag/0.1.0
It works on Android 12. However, I never use any assistant so I also used ADB to "uninstall" the Google Assistant and this way it never even tries to pop up at all. Works great!

What command did you use?
Didn't work for me on Android 12. I set it to launch Google Maps, but the button did nothing after that, even with an unlocked screen. It also kept randomly asking for superuser access (after the initial setup). Uninstalled and rebooted and the button worked again (Assistant).

then thats your issue, your device isnt corrected properly, make sure Debug mode is enabled in developer options and the phone shows up in device manager with a driver.
do u have any live communicator like facebook messenger to asist in real time and help me with it?
Hi all,
I have received my new Xperia 5III last week and just tested this way to remap the button on Android 12.
With the latest version of the app (0.7.1)
GitHub - ivaniskandar/shouko: Xpand the feature set of your Android!
Xpand the feature set of your Android! Contribute to ivaniskandar/shouko development by creating an account on GitHub.
github.com
and these adb commands:
adb shell pm grant xyz.ivaniskandar.shouko android.permission.READ_LOGS
adb shell pm grant xyz.ivaniskandar.shouko android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
it works but displays the Google Assistant popup.
Since I don't use the Google app nor Google Lens, I simply disabled the Google app and it works as intended for me!
Thumbs up
