Are we ever going to see custom roms and kernels on this device? - Sony Xperia XZs Questions & Answers

Is there a lack of developers or is something else going on?

Maybe the price of the devices have something to do with a lack of developers? I know in Poland XZs go for a lot of money, not sure how it is in other countries.
Also, another issue could be that the devices are hard to work for devs.
Not an expert on this or anything.

I really doubt it. Never seen a forum as dead as this for another device.
Almost no discussion what so ever for this excellent cell phone

probably because most of users either stick to the older xz or just skipped the xzs
well where I live the XZ/XZ Premium are the only officially available flagships , no xzs no xz1
also because of that I found deals of xz premium for almost same price as xzs or even lower !
but just be patient I remember back last year or so first when Z5 was out the first few months it's forum section nearly empty.. so yeah just wait and see

Your answer on the 1st post...
Yes ^^ i get tomorrow my XZs so am over here and sell my XZ

Once again, we are not getting ics because of hardware incapabilities, but due to the touchpads and games being incompatible with ics, and developers being to lazy to update their games to work with the play controls on ics. I REPEAT, IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF HARDWARE INCAPABILITIES. Now please stop complaining about not getting ICS

What the hell is the big deal about ics? If all you complainers want ics so bad sell your xplay and go buy another phone! Its as simple as that, sony doesn't HAVE TO release anything they don't want and they have the right to change anything they want at any time they want. So just accept the fact that we get no ics

I also paid the outrageous price for this phone on release day and I'm also smart enough to NOT believe everything a huge corporation says until I see it with my own eyes and I'm also not stuck up on the whole "but sony promised" thing yea so they made a promise it was obviously a premature promise and they had to retract it big deal life goes on. I'll just keep using the phone with what its got its been working just fine and will continue to be working just fine I'm not about to lose sleep over an update that I could care less about

Simply plain Wrong... What the hell makes you think like that???
I dont know about you US folks. But Sony ****ed it right up in the EU.
If a manufacturer advertises his product in anyway with a specific feature like sony promised to update to android 4 in april.
You as customer Buying the product, certainly have the right to get it!
Having that announced on their webpage is like a binding contract between them and the Xplay customers.
Now as You don't get it... well you got a faulty product, one where sony actually has to lower the price you bought it for. As they didn't provide you with the feature that you could expect as customer, because they promised it to you via blog for a whole 6 Months...
There are thing you can do!

Sony said they would release ICS for the Play before they knew any issues with it. The beta was released so that the community could test it and what happened? Most of the features of the phone were broken.
It would hurt Sony far more to release an update that breaks the devices functionality.
Also, the price of your device drops the second you buy it. Not, I repeat, NOT, because of updates.
I'd rather a "broken promise" (it was never a promise anyway just people here seem to think it does) and have a fully functioning gaming phone than something cosmetic that breaks the gaming aspect
No, Sony don't owe us anything.
They attempted to update the phone, and their reasons for excluding it are valid. If they could give us something great, if not, then whatever.
At least they tried.
Since the update was canceled, the Xperia Play community has totally tipped, with everyone complaining and everything.
If you want official ICS, then make it yourself, with working everything, send it off to Sony and they might employ you and release it.
Sony don't read through these threads, so people, stop the whining and get on with it. You have devs, yes? You have plenty of ICS roms that are functional, yes? There you go...

No see, I don't get it then.
Promising ICS without even knowing it works on the device, well is plain stupid and still not my fault. I did not make them write on their blog "We promise you android 4 in april".
.. Yes the phone is still functional. But it is not the phone The manufactorer told me it would be, as it is missing android 4 which the manufactorer promised me it would get as I bought it.
Either the manufactorer lied to me to get me to buy the phone. Now you can't say that as we have to think that they wanted to give it to us.
But the phone certainly is missing this feature that the manufactorer proclaimed it would get. CARE for what reason he fails to implement it. No one forced Sony to proclaim the Play would get ICS.
They are bound to their word. You can't proclaim you product will have certain features to a specific date, to get people to buy the product, then not give it to them.
just some sentences from the sony page to show you. That the promise was very real, not vage, and therefore - binding.
- With the holiday season around the corner, we’re happy to confirm that the first 2011 Xperia™ smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from end March/early April 2012.
I don't want to complain about not getting it and so on. It's just my opinion that everyone who bought the phone in the time period Sony promised to bring android 4. Actually is entitled to have it, as sony gave him the promise and he "bought it with the product"
.. And no I dont have developers, and yes I will switch the rom to ICS if I really want it... it's not whining for me... it's telling people they should fight it if they are pissed... obviously not here but still.

Sorry, you got ICS unofficially from Sony, so they fulfilled their promise. If they had released a final version, it would have been as functional as the beta anyway...
@keiran first I appreciate ur talent as developer most of ur rom and kernel are ver nice specially ur darkforest.wat happen to you sir bfore I read ur post that ur never buy a sony product again and you angry with sony but nowmaybe u send stable ics rom on sony and now ur the one employee of sony
Sent from my R800i using XDA
No Keiran, they have not fullfilled the promise. As the promise was my device will get ICS, but I can't. To use the beta I will have to unlock the bootloader which kills my warranty with sony. So... they really can't make me kill the warranty to get to a Beta.
And as someone who produces an outcome you really should get it.
If a manufactorer promises via webblog whatsoever, his product will have a certain feature/funtion/software, the customer can expect it as a given feature the product will have. As it now doesn't get this feature, for whatever reason, I have a faulty product. As it is not the way, the manufactorer proclaimed it would be.
It's like when you get your internet, if the provider says "downloadrate will be at 2mb in february" on the website. You buy, and he fails to get it up to that speed. You are entitled to get some of your money back, even though you still have a functional internet!
and yeah I really want to leave it at this point. We exchanged our Opinions, and I get both of yours saying we can't to anything as the phone is still functional. But I also hope you get my opinion

sony xperia z3

so now that verizon has the sony xperia z3 and it seems like a pretty solid phone. just wondering what everyone else thinks about it? is anyone thinking about switching to it or waiting for the nexus 6 to come out?

yeah i figured it was going to be locked down. i don't know i really like the way it looks, i went to vzw store today and checked it out, its a little on the bigger side. i like the ps4 remote play option and yes i know we can get it on our phones now i just havent tried doing it yet. im on the vzw edge program and my htc one is already half way paid off so i wouldn't have to pay anything if i upgraded. just seeing what everyone else though of it
Well it actually isn't a true Z3... if you look at the naming, it's the Z3V which is the Verizon specific variant of this phone. Some people have been saying that this is just the Z2 with updated internals and such so that may be something to consider because Sony did some updates with the body and feel with the Z3. Look at reviews too, a lot of them are pretty biased but they still offer good info.
I am also intrigued by this phone, but not able to upgrade till Feb 1, hopefully more to choose from by then, maybe a true Z3c, tired of the big phones, smaller phone with great hardware is what is missing, and the ability to unlock the boot loader.

The problem with Sony phones is that unlocking the bootloader usually degrades the camera's image quality pretty significantly, because their proprietary camera drivers are disabled when the bootloader is unlocked.

That has to be the stupidest idea ever. Why would they do that?! Lol
I have to say. I loved everything back in the day with Sony. The X10 was the first phone I got that was a smartphone but with HTC constantly being on the cutting edge with advancements in their products and build quality has really put me in a spot where I don't want anything different. Although when I first heard Verizon was getting the z3 I was excited. Then as stated above I found it to be a Z2 with a few upgrades. I don't know if I would waste my upgrade with the Z3V.

Xperia Z5 vs Xiaomi Mi 5

Hi, I am new here, and ahh I am currently looking for a new phone.
I am a Sony fan. I used a Sony Ericsson before, then used a Z1 compact for 2 years. However, it shattered and died yesterday.
So I was keen on having a Z5. However, according to what I have been reading here, there are little flaws here and there that is why I also looked out for other options, and I saw the Xiaomi Mi 5. The Mi 5 looks nice (Z5 looks nicer though) and a little cheaper, but I am bit hesistant because of that miui and chinese thing and of course my loyalty still lies with Sony.
I am really confused so I would like to ask for your opinions, maybe it will help me decide. Thanks.
So you ask in a Sony forum chances are answers are going to be a bit bias lol anyways I'd like to know what flaws as mine is almost perfect ?

Yeah, I was thinking maybe I'm just trying to persuade myself to pick the Z5
Since I don't have it yet, I really don't know what flaws it has haha, I am just inferring from what I read here and in other reviews
thanks for that almost perfect remark, i am already a bit convinced haha
Just a little reminder, Z5 will be (and I'm sure it MUST BE) more durable than xiaomi
My friends change 2 xiaomi while I'm using the z5...
Also, I think the support from the support department of sony is better than Xiaomi.
For flaw, I really don't see much on my z5…only some minor ones which are totally acceptable.
Go for z5??

I'm buying a Xperia. X5 or X5 Premium?

I know there are similar threads about this but none answers my questions. Please help.
-What I know:
Full HD 5.2 inches vs Ultra HD 5.5 inches and battery a little bit bigger.
-What I want to know:
Which one will last longer without recharging, under the same usage?
Which one has more support by the XDA community? (apps, ROMs, tweaks, guides, etc)
Does any of them have a greater chance than the other of coming hardware problems?
-My focus here is a phone with a good amount of RAM (3GB+), waterproof, front stereo speakers and official support of at least Android Nougat.
Do you know any other phones that can meet these requirements?

Maybe if you live in a realy hot country, i had no issues here in Sweden.
And i suppose now with android 7 the heating problems will be solved for most users but with a cost of lower cpu frequancy.
But if you like to a phone with official support and upgrades you should stay away from z5, i think we might get 1-2 more upgrades.

In my opinion,if you have to choose from z5 and z5p and you live snow country, the answer is z5p.
Z5p got 4k display, the back glass you gonna love it.
Same problem is S810 is suck,(the temperature will keep your hand warm,so you don't need to worry about how to survive in the winter)

point well taken from the economic view! xperias are expensive but all flagship phones are expensive! and top of that any flagship fone of any brand running on android at any given time is always cheaper than iphone (in both price and fair trade) and still they are selling their phones all over the world way more than xperias...
i own z5p and trust me its beauty in your hands! and now since its almost 18 months of its release. you will find it way cheaper than before!
battery life of android N on z5p is not very good! but you keep your z5p on last android 6.0.1 build .305 (Dec2016). it works amazing!

Upgrade from Z2 to XZ Premium?

I was wondering if its worthy for me to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Im currently using a Z2 with a permanently locked bootloader in other words I cant unlock it. I do have ExistenZ rom installed which is nice. Im just wondering is it worth spending the extra to go from a Z2 to an XZ Premium? Its only really software interface changes that I will use the most but is that very worthy alongside the hardware upgrades? Or am I better off saving the money and continuing with my Z2? The Z2 was one of the best Xperias for a long time and still can be said to be but im unsure whether its worthy to upgrade now.
All help on this decision will be appreciated. Thanks.
I upgraded from the Z2 to the Z5C. Mainly for the fingerprint support and the (supposedly) better processor. Only 10 months in to my Z5C, I decided to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Support for the Z2 ended back in 2015(?). so yes, I do recommend upgrading to the XZ Premium. I usually upgrade phones every 2 years, so the XZP will have to do me good for the time being. I'm happy with the phone and I love it!
I did consider other options like the Samsung S8, but after comparing the two (borrowed one from my friend), I settled on the XZP. Plus, it's faster than the s8.

Thank you for the decision. Its only price thats an issue for me the XZ Premium in the UK is around £500 ($650) cheapest so I want sure if it was worth the money but it seems youve sort of answered that. I will always upgrade to another Sony phone because I always have and although other phones are great I like having all Sony things as you may tell from my signature. I will consider the purchase the only thing that will stop me is the price but other than that it seems a viable option I may very well go for. Thanks.
Edit: Theres also the possibility I purchase one with a permanently locked bootloader like my Z2 so I should take that into consideration too otherwise no root unlike older Xperias where root could be done on locked bootloader.

Where did you purchase your Z2? I'm pretty sure the units on Amazon have an unlockable bootloader. I suggest you purchase one from there? Or if you prefer going to the store, I guess you can check if the demo phones have unlockable bootloaders.

I purchased it from Gumtree because money was also an issue then. I managed to get it for £220 in Feb 2015. The seller got it from Vodafone and I had to unlock the sim as Iam on another network which is why the bootloader is locked. On amazon the XZ premium is £610 but ive found one on eBay for £500 that says its from Amazon. There are cheaper dual variants on eBay but I dont think theyre UK models. It seems if the phone is purchased from EE or o2 in the UK then it will have a locked bootloader so I think I shouldnt have too much trouble. Thanks.
Hi, I bought it 4 days ago, my previous phone is Z2. I realy like XZ Premium. Also i will upload on my YouTube channel comparison between this two phones.

What kind of config did you use on your Z2? Was it stock or did you have a custom rom and xposed? Thanks

I cant unlock my bootloader sadly so I cant oc which gives me more a reason to get an XZ Premium. Sounds like its a worthy upgrade though thanks for all the responses.

I just ordered an XZ Premium now that I should recieve by the 6-8th September I will still keep my Z2 as a spare. I managed to snag it for £500 it retails for around £600 in the UK so I think I got a good deal and its new too. Hopefully it was worth waiting for a cheaper price to drop. Im sure I will be satisfied with the purchase also in the future when Sony drops support for it there will be more support for it on XDA.
Xpiera z2 was the best sony phone until XZ premium - so if you need a change, its the best moment.

Yeah I think ive made a good choice. Even the XZ was decent but its annoying how Sony release a new phone every 6 months. The XZ1 is the first Sony phone to actually be a bit of a downgrade to that of the previous flagship as its basically an XZ Premium with a 1080p display. Thats as far as im aware ive never seen Sony release a device like this before also if my purchase is legitimate then I will have snagged a bargain too.
One other thing I would like to know though is that does anyone run the device at native 4k all the time? If so is it worth doing and is there much of a difference? I read through the 4k thread but it seems to be mixed. Nobody really says its worth doing or not its kind of mixed. Also I dont really care if it affects battery life as long as its a worthy benefit.

I tried it for a bit and I don't think it's worth it.
Sure text looks smooth as a kindle but it makes the phone stutter every now and then.
It also causes some compatibility issues which seem far too inconvenient without a way to switch resolution on the go.
When I do want to use it (during VR), I'll just switch it then switch back.

Wow this is great! Even by watching this on my Xperia Z2 it looks pretty nice and life like. I would watch it on a 4K TV/monitor but it looks good enough at 1080p on my Xperia Z2 screen. I can only imagine how good it would look on an actual 4K screen though I am tempted to have a look. The colours shown really show how vibrant they are and the auto focus is so much more superior to that of my Z2 just the fact it can focus that close. I cant wait to recieve it I just got confirmation and a tracking number that I should recieve it by Tuesday. Joke is this phone has a better screen than my 4K bravia as Sony dont wanna support HDR for it.
One thing I would like to know. Does the phone still record 120fps at 720p using timeshift video if its still called that or does is the resolution bumped up for 120fps since it supports upto 960fps? Just wondering because with the 960fps you cant pick where you want the slow motion and 720p only looks so good, would be beneficial if its 1080p over 720p and would only make sense since it can record up to a high framerate. Please let me know, thanks.

Does the top one work like timeshift video? Also I was wondering if the resolution is the same for all or different for 120fps. Thanks.
