Using the EU Version in the US - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

I'm considering buying the European version of the xz premium for use in the US, since it comes with the fingerprint reader already enabled, and is about $100 USD cheaper. However, I've seen some people raise concern over the cell reception when running the European firmware. I'm wondering if anybody knows if this could be due to the European firmware not matching the physical bands included on the U.S. device (of if that's even a thing), and also if that could be somewhat solved by just getting it straight from Europe. Is there anybody that has the European version that could speak to the cell reception quality in the United States?

If you use the European device in the US, you also have to change the settings for the used bands.
There is an option to change used frequencies in *#*#4636#*#*. Guess that would make a difference since the hardware is always the same.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. I didn't know that they all had the same physical bands

You don't need to change anything.
When you pop in US sim, all bands are available and appropriate LTE CA combinations are loaded.
3G calling will work, but you will miss out on VoLTE with euro region firmware.

Bought my XZP from Clove UK.. Using it in NYC.. No probs with reception.. No need to change anything, all I did was pop in the sim card, working great ?

I recommend to change the radio configuration to "United States" just in case.

I just popped in my AT&T sim and no problems. I did set the bands to the United States...makes no difference as everything works the same.

UK model G8141 here in US. I just put my AT&T sim and got LTE and great connection right away. No worries.

I ordered mine from Clove as well, and while it does seem to work just fine with my AT&T SIM, I always have only 0-2 bars of signal and the phone always shows 4G/4G+ instead of LTE. Anyone else have this issue? I've been trying to do some digging to see if perhaps there is some setting that I need to adjust such as the APN used or something to get better signal strength. Thoughts?

First of all, 4G in the UK is the same as LTE in the United States, so no issue there.
Do not look at the bars as this can be manipulated by the programmers. To see how strong your signal really is you need to go to settings > about phone > status > SIM status. The lower the number the better. I am fairly certain that if you DO NOT use 4G you will get a stronger signal which may be perfectly fine unless you need a real fast signal. By not using 4G you will be using 3G. Hope this helps! :good:

Oh good. I was wondering about whether or not the UK actually called it LTE like we do here.
My average signal strength seems to be -119dbm 99asu pretty much regardless of where I am in my city. It just seems weird since my Huawei Mate 9 got consistently better signal than this in the same market, with the same SIM, supporting the same frequencies. Just makes me wonder if there's something I'm missing or if I should try getting a new SIM from AT&T.

I doubt that a new SIM will help anything. Those numbers are quite high. Too high in my opinion. If you do not stream videos or something that needs very fast LTE signals, then I would choose to not use 4G. You should get a much lower number (better signal) and everything will still work just fine.

Have you tried re-provisioning the phone? Maybe have it pull down the settings and reboot. I got mine from clove and am on AT&T as well... Pulled the sim out of my SGS6 and everything seems to have worked perfectly.
How are your speedtest results?

You mean having it download mms and Internet settings, then reboot? I've done that a couple times but I never rebooted after doing it. I did notice that in my APN settings, there are two for AT&T and I can't find an answer as to which one to use. One is called "phone" and the other is "nxtgenphone".
My download speeds aren't terrible but they aren't super amazing either. Last I checked it was 35mbps down and about 5mbps up. I'll try reprovisioning and restarting and see what happens. It just sucks not ever having more than 2 bars no matter where I am.
Edit: just tried downloading mms and Internet settings again but it didn't help. Maybe I should reset my network settings to default and try again just in case?

Mine is set to nxtgenphone. I really wouldn't focus on the bars. My z3 was also from the UK and did the same thing. You can check under the diagnostics settings screen to see what your data connection is or try doing the magic combo number to see what bands you're set to.
Is there anyone with a phone on the same carrier that would pull up their signal strength info so you can compare the actual numbers?

Maybe someone can give me some but others have told me that averaging -119dbm 95asu is a pretty weak signal.
Others have said I shouldn't need to change any settings in the hidden phone menu, but I set it to United States just to be safe. I didn't mess with any network settings in there aside from that.
Edit: checked radio band setting and set it to United States. Network preferred type is set to LTE/UMTS auto (PRL). Not sure if I need to change any of these settings or not.

In your APN settings for nextgenphone, is the APN protocol set to IPv4/6 or just IPv4?

Whenever I test it in the hidden menu the IPv6 test always fails. Even AT&T's official documentation says not to use the IPv6 but I'm not sure what to believe since the downloaded settings have it enabled.

LTE not working?! Manual Programming codez (updated)11-7

I got my Nexus 5 yesterday and finally got it working. I live right next to a LTE tower and I can't seem to get LTE.
1. Checked PRL
2 Checked Sim
3 Checked Profile
4. Called sprint
5. Checked network settings.
When i put the phone in airplane mode, and back off. It jumps to LTE for 2 seconds then 3g
Anyone having these issues ???
*manual re-fresh*
*#*#72786#*#*
after that, phone will reboot and "re-fresh network"
Also, my phone wen't into global mode, which you will need to change that back to LTE mode.
- Still isn't fixed ...
will report back ..
Manual Programming Code
*#*#675#*#*
edit: MDN = phone number
MSID: split
UPDATE
doing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only does indeed make LTE work both visually and functionally, with a loss of voice of course, but as soon as you go back to LTE/CDMA auto it'll require a reboot to take effect and LTE is once again not working.
(from sprint forums) - confirmed
I'm having these issues with Sprint as well. Thanks for your updates. I'll let you know if I learn anything.

Yes, this is very aggravating. My friends have LTE sprint phones and get LTE standing right next to me.
There is something wrong here! :/
On phone with sprint now, I hope they have an update.

Here is how I fixed it for myself on Sprint.
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Change Network Mode from Global to LTE.
It will still connect to Evdo, ehrpd and Lte and switches between them as needed.
Luckily I haven't got hit with 1x since trying this out. My area has maybe one or two spots where I'd get 1x instead of ehrpd.
Settings hold after a reboot. I was driving to work today with my phone playing my music and it seemlessly switched between 3g and lte on it's own.

I guess so because I was having that same initial problem you were where LTE would connect for a few seconds then when I tried to do anything with data it stalled out and went to 3g.

Mine does that too.
BUT, nothing in the settings has been able to fix this.
How long since you activated? Mine would not connect to lte at all until last night... about 30 hours after activation.
Now it connects fine. I tried everything including flashing the modems posted in dev, swapping sims, trying every different network config and nothing worked except lte only mode which then kills 3g and voice.

I too am having the exact same problem as the OP. I can change the setting from Global to LTE and the phone will connect to LTE for a few seconds before switching back to 3g.
I am coming from the Note 3 on Sprint that got great LTE here at home, about 16mb down and 4mb up but I am hoping this gets resolved quick.
I'm on T-Mobile and it favors sticking on HSPA+ instead of LTE. If LTE gets down to one bar, the phone decides it's time to switch back. Compare this behavior to my Nexus 4 and it would stick on LTE come hell or high water. I would stay on LTE while in the office and this phone refuses to even get on LTE in the office. I don't get it.
Some have suggested this is a "power saving" feature, but I call BS on this because my Nexus 4 wasn't even intended to have its LTE radio used and LTE really didn't impact my battery. It felt like it lasted the same as it did before I enabled LTE on it.
Possible Sprint Fix
Customer: Is the SIM device specific? I reused the one from my Note 3. I have seen other information that the SIM's for the Nexus 5 are device specific.
Mitchell C.: Yes, you can get a SIM for the Nexus from a nearest Sprint store. I can fix an appointment for you.
Customer: so they are device specific?

Mitchell C.: We've come across a lot of these issues today.

Well, I got my sim card from a sprint store 2 days ago and I am still having issues. I have been emailing sprint care but no luck.
I hope they fix this soon! Maybe they gave me the wrong SIM? Idk
Doubtful Mitchell knows what he is talking about. People have used HTC One SIMS and GS4 sims and have LTE. But, today is the big day the Sprint phones go on sale. Will be interesting to see if any of those people have the issue.

Still stuck on 3G after activating around 72 hours ago.
To follow up on the Nexus 5's "special" SIM card. I'm also skeptical about this. I'm using a SIM from a GS4 (part #: SIMGLW206R) which is the same SIM mentioned in this post about activating the Nexus 5 on Sprint: http://qbking77.com/google-nexus-5/activate-nexus-5-sprint/.
However, I called a nearby Sprint store to ask if they had any SIM cards available. They said yes but when I mentioned the Nexus 5 the representative seemed to think there was some additional procedure for coupling the phone and the SIM. I don't know any more about this. Could be misinformation of course.

[Q] Any way to get WCDMA/LTE only mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode on the Nexus 5?
I basically want to stop the phone dropping to 2G. Recently LTE has been made available here and before that I used "WCDMA only" and it worked fine but that is no longer a viable option since I want to use LTE.
Thanks in advance

I do, but I can use 3G to do this. I mean I don't want it to drop to EDGE.
The reason is, in Ireland the network provider Three does not have a 2G network and roams to Vodafone when it 3G isn't available. It then will not automatically change back to 3G. You need to manually select the Three network again.
you have no option then. you have either lte only, which gets you data and no phone calls, or you have lte/gsm. on gsm/lte, itll switch to whatever is your best signal.
Wouldn't it be easier to choose the operator manually?

It still jumps to vodafone when there is poor signal, even when manually selected. If there was a way of forcing it to stay with one operator or disable roaming completely, then that would do but there doesn't seem to be an option.

When looking in SlimKat (admittedly not stock), it is @fergietime suggests, national data roaming and would still allow the phone to roam to another operator when there was no signal on the existing operator - just with no data. However, I am not seeing a problem with that. It only roams nationally when there is 0 signal for voice on your operator?

Yes, but it happens me quite often due to certain places that I pass through. My operator does not have a 2G network at all so roams once it drops below 3G. The main problem is, I need to manually search for networks and select my network to get it back to 3G/4G. It's a network issue that Three Ireland refuse to acknowledge. It has been happening for 4 years at least. I am just looking for a workaround.

I see.
I am also on Three (UK though) so also have no 2G coverage. and yes, when it fails over to 2G (Orange in UK) it is a pain to get it back.

It's a very frustrating issue. It actually NEVER jumps back to Three and it changes to Vodafone nearly every time I go inside a Tesco or somewhere like that. I then have to search and wait for it to find networks so I can select Three. The only time it seems to work correctly is when using a device bought from Three or a Three rom, which obviously for the Nexus 5 doesn't exist. And even then people complain about it so it's a bit hit and miss.
Does anyone know if it is possible to add a "WCDMA/LTE Only" mode into a rom?

[Q] XT1045 won't connect to LTE

I picked up an XT1045 (Moto G LTE USA) recently from Amazon and had T-Mobile ship me a new micro-SIM, then called them to activate it. I know there are LTE towers around (had customer support tell me as much) but I never see "LTE" in the status bar, always "H" or "H+". Granted, download speeds in San Jose on HSPA+ are pretty fast, but I am wondering if I'm missing something fairly obvious. I have the default LTE APN selected.
I did unlock the phone using the Motorola site and rooted it. Could this interfere with LTE operation somehow ?

Which APN are you using. You should be on fast.tmobile.com
I have the similar setup (xt1045,unlocked bootloader, rooter, stock 4.4.3 and stock kernel) and don't have any issues. It did take a few hours after first boot. I am in a refarmed area however. Mine defaulted to the lte/fast apn.
a few things:
- tmobo indoors isn't great in all places, so try outside
- if you're on wifi, they downgrade to hspa/3g to save battery, you may not see lte until you get off wifi
- you may be over your monthly 4g cap
to be honest, their hspa+ speeds are same as lte out here anyways

Even if you are over your monthly cap, you still connect to LTE. It just lowers your speeds.
Thanks all for the info. I'm using the T-Mobile APN that came with the phone (fast.t-mobile.com), wifi off, have tried indoors/outdoors.
I'm pretty sure I'm not over my data cap -- my previous phone was a Nexus S and my data usage habits haven't really changed yet
It is a much snappier phone and the HSPA+ and wifi and GPS really are much nicer. I like having the microSD slot too. So I can't really complain too much.

Never saw 'Phone information' come up. I'm assuming this would be the same as changing 'bearer' in the APN setting to 'LTE' instead of unspecified (tried that already, it just seems to get no data at all then) ?

So when you dial *#*#4636*#*# , what is the first menu on the top?
It's not the same, cos if you set it there, it allows of 3G connections if no LTE available (dunno if you force it from Settings -> More.. -> Mobile Networks -> Network Mode -> LTE ).
The Airoplane mode is just to "relog" to the carrier network , you just cycle through it On->Off

The correct combination is *#*#4636#*#* and you dont have to press dial after that, the menu should pop-up right after you press the last character. This is not model specific either, it works on all android versions/roms.

Apparently doesn't work on this phone. It's ok, google led me to a couple of apps which appear to do something similar. Thanks for the insight !
Finally got the "LTE" indicator while outside eating lunch near work today. I was amazed that the speedtest.net app reported ~30Mbps down / 20 up. Didn't have to mess with the default T-mobile LTE APN. I guess T-mobile's coverage is just kind of spotty, but maybe the nearby tower was just upgraded or something like that

[Q] Nexus 5 only connects to LTE on T-Mobile

I did some searching around and found a couple of pages with ideas but they have not worked so far. Here's the deal, my son's said his Nexus 5 was getting pretty bad reception so I took a look at it. After some toggling of the network settings I discovered that it will only connect to LTE, not to HSPA(+) or Edge. Where we are, we have somewhat weak LTE (2 of the three towers have been "modernized" with LTE and band 2 HSPA+, one has not and it's slightly closer to us). We have a Cell-Fi repeater so we get strong HSPA+ signal in our house. His sim works fine in a Nexus 4 with the hybrid radio getting Edge, HSPA+ and LTE. My nano sim with adapter that works fine in the Nexus 4 exhibits the same problems in the Nexus 5. I tried formatting the cache from the stock recovery menu and am now looking to do a factory reset since I never did oem unlock this phone so I can't just flash a radio to test.
My gut tells me it's hardware so I have my son rebuilding his phone environment on the Nexus 4 so that we can do a factory reset to see if that helps and I'll unlock it at that point. If it doesn't fix it, I've already started the conversation with the play store. My question is, anyone else seen anything like this? Anything else I should try out?

if lte is in your area, and not a perfect signal, itll still choose to connect to lte by default. if you lose your lte connection, then itll connect to H or 3G, and so on. if you do not want it to connect to lte, go to the phones main settings, mobile networks, then change the preferred network type from lte to 3G. or you can dial *#*#4636#*#*, chose phone info, then change the network type to wcdma preferred.

Thanks for the reply, I understand all that. I don't know if I asked clearly enough or not but the problem we are seeing here is that this particular phone can only connect to LTE which is weak inside my house. So, when it tries to switch over, it just won't connect. I also tried to make a call which will switch to HSPA+ and that too fails. Going to the info menu and selecting WCDMA preferred nets me a phone that won't connect, selecting GSM results in the same. LTE only or GSM/LTE works only if it picks up an LTE signal. Ditto for selecting 2G, 3G or LTE preferred in the Mobile Networks menu. I've also reset the APN's, confirmed that the settings match my MotoX, etc and still no joy.
Just looking for ideas that someone might have that I can try before blowing away all my son's data on a factory reset or, if that fails, hardware replacement.

ok, i understand now. i didnt know that it wasnt connecting to h or 3G when it should. to me it sounds like a device ready to get an rma. i mean there is a hardware mod that could possibly fix it, but its not worth the trouble. if you can get an rma, get an rma.

Yea, according to the nice person I spoke to at the play store, I should indeed qualify for an RMA and I should find out in the next day or so. I purchased the phone new in box from someone and they were able to find the phone and they are now attributing the phone to me.
I am curious about the hardware mod though. Is this just for Edge/HSPA or is it for signal in general? If it's signal in general then I'm not sure I'd want to try it since this phone used to work just fine.

yup, thats it
but i would chose the rma route, as the nexus 5 shouldnt be behaving that way.

Yes, agreed. OK, just asking around as much as possible. I'm betting he will be getting a new phone.

OnePlus 6 A6000 UK Three network 4g issues

I live in the UK and am on the three network. In january I received my OnePlus 6 A6000 which I bought from gearbest. It's working perfectly but one thing bothered me. Everywhere I go as long as there's good signal I get a good 4g connection. But the place I currently stay in l, the signal can be on and off. Like I would get 4g near the window in my room and as I move around that signal weakens until it shows H+ or no signal and I can't even do anything with it even in H+. Similar thing would happen on my previous phone the S4 so I never worried about it too much. When people would be in my room using their phones which are older than mine and who are on the same network I notice they get 4g 1 or 2 sometimes 3 bars consistently with a decent speed. I thought maybe this is because my phone's a Chinese version. So I checked and even though my phone is a6000 Chinese version, all the frequency bands used by three for 4g are supported. I put my sim in a global version on my friends OnePlus 3 and instantly got a decent 4g connection which means it's my phone that's not compatible or something even though when I check online, according to what I've seen it should be compatible. Is there anything I could do to solve this on this phone or is my only hope buying the A6003 version?

I've used an app called network cell info lite which told me my phone's using band 3 (1800mhz). This was so the case yesterday. Does that mean my phone can't connect to the band 20 (800mhz)? I'm also aware that three use the 800mhz band for 4g. How can I get my phone to use 800 MHz band?

Checked this site, it seems a6000 don't support 800mhz. It supports 850mhz though but it isn't used by your network.
This is why phone makers make regional models to ensure compatibility with local networks.
The site might be wrong. You can Google for other sources to reconfirm.

On the LTE band section it says B18, B19 and B20 are 800 and supported. I don't understand?
It says FDD 800 (band 20) is supported. Also three uses that band
So is there nothing I can do to this current phone?
Ok so I just went on OnePlus support page and spoke to them via live chat, they told me despite this phone being the Chinese version a6000, it should still support band 20

Did you ask them how to force it to use band 20?
Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk
What they told me was to reset network settings which I told them I already did. Then they said to do a factory reset. And if that didn't work then to send it in for repair. However I will go back and ask them if it can be forced to use have 20

Ok so I've asked them. It seems they keep dodging the question and just suggest resetting the phone etc and then send it in for repair.
Try to Google to find service menu. For my samsung note 8, entering *#2263# or was it *#2263*# gets you into service mode and you can force the bandwidth from there.
Do note once you do that, if you leave the area you might need to reenable auto in the service menu to allow the phone to select the strongest bandwidth to connect to.Which is odd to begin with as the phone should have selected the strongest one on the first place. Default setting is auto.

I asked OnePlus again they sent me a link with codes
https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/oneplus-secret-code.738365/
*#808# takes it to factory mode and there's something called LTE diversity ant switch but nothing happens
Ok when I go to that LTE diversity ant test there's a box and below it it says "Ok". So you are supposed to fill the box in with something
I found an app called shortcut master lite which shows modes like engineering mode, found something called band mode 1 and band mode 2, LTE network select etc but when I try and go on it, says it's not allowed for security reasons. Tried adding screenshots but having trouble at the moment
Ok now none of the modes are accessible. Can't access factory mode or anything. *#800# or *#808# none are working anymore. Just says connection error or invalid mmi

I think something is wrong with your phone.
Or you can do what I did for my company. Go purchase a booster for the frequency band you are using but low in signal, to boost it up. I got mine at taobao or aliexpress, I forgot which one, for usd60.
I use this in my office because the company insist on using a certain telco for corporate mobile phones which is oddly low in all its bandwidth indoors at the office. Outside its at full 4.5G strength. I installed it right below a window where the signal is strong. Bam, full 4.5G signal to me and all my colleagues indoors.
If u chose to buy this ensure it supports the bandwidth you are using.

Never mind lol. Switched my phone off and then on and now the codes are working. Just can't access those modes for security reasons
Found an app called LTE band calculator which when u select a few bands it gives you a number. For example if I selected bands 3, 7 and 20 it gives 524356. I was thinking what if I entered it onto the LTE diversity ant switch and tapped ok?
I was using an app called Network Cell Info Lite. It gives information about your current signal strength, type of connection, which band it is connected to.
So I tested it where I suspected I didn't get signal because my phone didn't connect to band 20.
What happened was I went on the app, turned on location, took my phone off of flight mode, and as it was searching for signal (my phone for some reason takes a little longer to pick up signal) the app said it was using band 20! However there was no data connection at all and definitely no signal. Then I picked up signal finally but this is when it goes to band 3.
So based on this it seems my phone can use band 20 but the question is why isn't it picking up signal? Not sure if it's a problem with three in the phone.
I just contacted three and they said everything is fine with the network.
