Where should I start in order to install a custom rom? - Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus Questions & Answers

I think the title is pretty much self explainatory.
I'm about to buy this phone coming from an old Nexus 4 which is stupidly easy to mod but I heard that Xiaomi phones aren't that easily moddable.
What I would like to do is install twrp and Lineageos rom, on my Nexus 4 I would just plug the phone on my pc, start fastboot and flash the recovery, but on the Xiaomi phones I don't really know where to start.

Hi,
Before you even buy the phone, please create an account on the Xiaomi forum and ask for an unlock code here :
http://en.miui.com/unlock/
It may take up to 10 days to get it !
But I think you can ask for that code even before you buy your device
Once you get it and you have unlocked your phone, installing TWRP and a custom ROM is as easy as with any other Nexus Device
Regards.

This is going to be a problem for me. Brought my phone from ibuygou and my phone came with a mi account already associated with it and I don't know the password for it :/

Create a new account, where you will input all your data, including the phone number...
Achive Diamond member on MIUI forum..with that new account, otherwise you will not be able to unlock it.
Just hit that restore to factory deff. button in security and your phone will be wiped. remember to backup everything on computer.
After your phone is factory deff. then on the initial setup, input the new MI account you just created.. and you're good to go.
Application will be made by the unlock tool, once you logged with your UID (the account number on forum) and password. As soon as MI will let you unlock the bootloader, you will receive an SMS, that your account was allowed to unlock it.
Only after that, you will be able to unlock the bootloader.

yes.. just a simple wipe will do..also cache and davilk cache..
after that, you can apply for new MI acoount. The one you will own, and know everything about it.
I didn't payed too much attention, but how in the world, ibuygou to send you a new device with a prestored MI account?! I don't get it.

It came with an xiaomi.eu ROM and twrp already installed. Worryingly I've done a full system wipe and clean install of a xiaomi.eu ROM before and it hasn't reset my mi account. Or so I thought, will try again Friday or at the weekend.
Isn't locking bootloader against Mi's 'geek' spirit?
Locking bootloader is aimed to provide better user experience, which we've been trying to do the whole time. In the meantime, we've provided a unlocking tool for senior users who know their ways around flashing and tweaking their devices. (Unlocking Tutorial)
The unlocking process is really simple. After unlocking, the device can do all the things as before we locked bootloader.
The unlocking procedure will need Internet access to get the unlocking password. Also, the Mi Account logged in on the Mi phone and the unlocking tool needs to be the same. Otherwise the unlocking request will be denied. This will ensure that ill-intentioned people will not get access to your personal data.

What a poor move by them
Well, I think a *****, more coming from a company that its beginnings were a simple modified ROM, if all the phones have blocked today Xiaomi not exist. These behaviors piss me much. At least hopefully option to open it easily, like google with the nexus

excuse , as you become a diamond member?
Maybe they want to protect new costumers from bloatware installed by resellers, and the only option is locking the bootloader...
BUT
-the unlocking peocedure is only in Chinese at the moment
-you don't receive the unlock code immediately, the wait could be 15 days
-Xiaomi locked already sold phone by an update without writing it on changelog
I own a Mi4c by 2 weeks, fortunately I'm on sMiui, otherwise with this update I would have returned this phone

You need to be very active on en.miui.com forum...
Maybe if you open a post in that community someone could help you in a better way...
This move by Xiaomi will prevent other s**t from resellers...
Well I guess don't want to flash the developer rom, then
How will this affect roms like sMIUI or Xiaomi.eu?
I understand why they did it, but I don't like how they enabled it. They should have made all future phones being made/shipped out be locked, so then you know from the start you have a locked bootloader. I feel bad whoever ran into issues with updating with a custom recovery.

It might be foreboding of a move into more international markets for them. Seems like an attempt to cripple resellers that modify stock or flash the EU roms in any case.
I can't imagine any other incentive for them to make this move, since they've always been so focused on ROM development themselves, they must've realized this would not sit well with their audience. I remember people marveling at the first MIUI ROM when it came around for the Nexus One. Weird how that feels nostalgic already.
I ordered a 4c not 24 hours ago, I hope this doesn't mean I'll get treated to an unlock process exclusively in Chinese before I can get a crack at it. But no use worrying about that yet, cross that bridge when we get to it.
Does anyone has an idea on what to do with this phone now?
I just bought it today and I was going to install xiaomi.eu rom. Now I have just spent 2000 HKD on a phone full of "MI accounts" and Chinese software that is no use to me... Even the unlock method requires diamond status or whatsoever on your MI account? I don't even want to have a MI account!! This is madness.. and the unlock software is all in Chinese even on your phone!

Return the phone to the seller, if there is a pre existing MiAccount the phone is used, not new, I never heard of phone with TWRP installed from the seller, they usually use a live version to hide the modification...
I hope you have paid with PayPal

Probably your phone will come with a old unofficial version of miui, simply don't apply 6.1.14 china dev, if you want an official rom flash the last stable, or sMiui...
I think they need to sell of the existing stock before pushing locked bootloader smartphone to resellers...

It seems to be a panic solution from XIAOMI... But I for one, have had bloatware/malware installed when I got the device. I just bought one for my girlfriend, and I'm positive that there is bloatware installed as well.
I am sure that the team at Xiaomi are reading this, and when XDA members (like me) complain about bloatware, they see a threat, as I sure as hell won't recommend a device from Xiaomi to rookie users because of the bloatware.

I probably did not explained very well... what i mean by MI account is all the software related to it.
I mean there is not even Global ROM for this phone! I just wanted to install Xiaomi.eu rom and then to use the Google Now Launcher until Cyanogen gets more stable!

At least now I can suggest the mi4c when normal people ask, as alternative to the factory locked RedMi Note 3...

[QUESTION] Remote : download recovery not allowed

i have vivo v5s , and as you know it doesn't have any custom recovery.
so i try to port it myself even i'm just a noob but it's my phone no one will get hurt but myself , no risk.
i try everything , but when i want to flash the twrp i got this error message , so what should i do?
Vivo doesn't have a method to unlock bootloader, they have locked it from 3rd party roms or recoveries (custom roms and recoveries) as a result the vivo phone's can't be unlocked for now (although they have the oem unlock option) but the company blocked it for stability many people are changing from vivo after knowing that
vivo is not a developing friendly i suggest you buy another phone like pixel which is very friendly with developers.
Xiaomi also is a good choice.
Samsung and Huawei aren't that much friendly too since there lastest updates and upgrades with their phones.
so vivo is like xiaomi?
i didn't know that , should have done better research in the future then ..
i will try it and i hope my first own twrp work!!
Yeah by the way sorry I linked you to the wrong webpage :/
Vivo doesn't have a method to unlock bootloader
But i did unlock and rooted my device but when i tried to use playstore it was a problem so i reinstall the official update but the problem is that i dont remember how i did that.

ZTE Nubia X custom rom support?

I'm interested in buying Nubia X.
I have never owned a zte or nubia phone before and have no idea about their Android updates, rooting, etc.
History-wise, can nubia phones be rooted / unlocked (bootloader)? And possible to have custom rom installed? Are there developers usually working on nubia phones?
The other phones are very easy to unlock, in fact I would say too easy. The Z11 and Z17 do not have passwords for unlocking so it's simply a case of plugging your device in and running oem unlock, there is no wipe. So be aware anyone with knowledge will be able to bypass your lock screen by simply unlocking the phone and removing the lockscreen files...
Be careful and encrypt your device if you get one.

Ok thanks. I was asking in terms of being able to flash custom rom though. I currently use oppo and not being able to flash custom rom sucks. Just curious about nubia's history of practice (updates, bootloader unlock, custom rom support). And this phone has 2 screens, will there be likely custom roms made for this phone?
I'm really interested in buying this phone for the hardware part and flashing a custom rom to get newer android versions
Dual OS
I was wondering if I could create a custom rom in a way that works similar to a DualBoot, or rather, did to switch between two operating systems to run both simultameamente, sharing all the hardware except the display. For example, run Pure Android Pie on the home screen, and windows 10 on the back screen.
Sorry for the bad english and "invade" another topic.
Thank you.

Yes that is a good idea. Won't it eat too much storage though? There's no sd slot here. What about battery life, will it be affected? So i guess it should be the 128gb version so you have enough storage for apps and files.
To this moment, NubiaX has no root solution yet. This should not be a surprise as the phone just launched for 20 days.
Good news is historically, all Nubia devices can be rooted, including it's latest flagship Z18 which launched on 9/5.
Bad news is that there used to be only 2 ROM developers working on Nubia devices' rooting, not sure when X will get their attention.

F2 pro Help needed by expert in xiaomi.eu

Hi, I installed the Xiaomi bootloader unlock tool to unlock F2 pro's bootloader and thinking it will say 15 days after clicking on unlock. It instantly unlocked the bootloader rather than waiting for 7 or 15 days.

1:Since the bootloader is already unlocked, and I wanted to use the call recorder function as well, SHould I install Xiaomi.eu from or wait for android 11 in global rom.
2:I have heard people cellphone getting bricked by installing marufrino twrp. Should I wait for official twp recovery, or this recovery just work fine for flashing Xiaomi.eu rom

Question Xiaomi Pad 6 Pro Custom Rom

Hi all,
since there is not dedicated forum as of now, I'll try and post my question here.
Are there any custom roms or has anyone tested a GSI for the new Xiaomi Pad 6 Pro?
there are no custom roms yet
GSI roms should work similar to this device
Just installed this GSI: https://github.com/ponces/treble_build_pe/releases/
Seems to work fine so far, although, it for some reason thinks there's always a physical keyboard connected, so I had to make the on-screen keyboard always enabled.
You can also force the display to use 144hz with the GSI under Phh Treble Settings > Misc features > Force FPS
nice. thanks for sharing!
How did you unlock the bootloader and flash a recovery?
I can't find TWRP images for this device.

You can go to https://en.miui.com/unlock/index.html to download software to unlock bootloader. (check here on xda, how you can unlock.. ;-)).
One of the activities is to have xiaomi account. You need to login with that on your tablet, before you can unlock.
You have to do some activities and wait for 168hours... (not a joke).
Then after the unlock, you need to boot into Fastboot, where you can flash the GSI image with ADB.
(must likely you would need to remove the product partition, otherwise the the image wont fit. Also make sure you download A image. Pad 6 Pro only has A. )
pfff.. 168 hours I wish.. I got the message that I have to wait for 300 hours.. 15 fricking days..
But if I understand you correcrly you've used the standard xiaomi recovery system to flash the custom rom?

I have already done the unlock according to the instructions from mi pad 5 on this forum is the same.
I've been using this Xiaomi Pad 6 pro with 12/256 for about 2 weeks now, and normally I feel the urge to get away from MIUI as quickly as I can, but dang this chinese rom is doing so well! No weird chinese apps that can not be removed, no problems with syncing all my google accounts ... Not sure yet if theres a need to change to another customr rom (yet) im surprised.

It's great that there are already roms that can be flashed. Unfortunately, I lack the knowledge of how to do it - I found a description for mi pad 5 below:
Run an GSI on your Mi Pad 5
To run an GSI on your Mi pad 5 : Unlock bootloader Download an arm64 AB gsi: https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/treble-enabled-device-development-a-ab-roms.7260/ I used system-roar-arm64-ab-vndklite-vanilla.img by Phh Download vbmeta.img from...
forum.xda-developers.com
Reboot to fastboot
Open an cmd:
fastboot flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot reboot fastboot
fastboot flash system system-roar-arm64-ab-vndklite-vanilla.img
fastboot reboot recovery
Make an factory reset
Reboot
A question for the author if and what instructions you gave, whether the same as for mi pad 5 from this manual or other. Please write more precisely what and how you flashed along with the issued commands.
Does fast charging work on the GSi (the tablet will be 100% charged in 1hour)?
where to download this file vbmeta.img ? Is it supposed to be the same as for mi pad 5?

I think you should look at what happen to me today! I have buy a xiaomi phone, I want to unlock the device, but the xiaomi company said I should wait 2 Hours for the Technology worker's answer. and 2 Hours after, they say I should wait for 168 Hours for the right to unlock. but the truth is that I have do everything until click the "Unlock" button on the xiaomi Unlock app on my laptop. but it become gray color, you can not click this button. it not display that your count should wait for 30 days to unlock. this means that they just do not want to unlock the device for me. not because of the wait 168 hours. the wait 168 hours just a reason (excuse) for them to keep not disable unlock for me. How evil they are!
never buy any electronic device from the xiaomi or Jinshan company. they are evil company.
and you can think about the security of all the China electronic device. the picture is that I take from my laptop about what I say.
