Can you still purchase phones subsidized with Sprint on grandfathered plan? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I currently have a Galaxy Note 4 with Sprint. When I originally purchased this phone, I paid $299 with a 2 year contract with a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Now, all of the advertised purchase options for phones are to do monthly payments. Can you still purchase a phone subsidized if you are on a grandfathered plan?
Thanks

Sprint advised me when i preordered my S8+ that the 2 year upgrades are done. Options are lease, 24 month payments, or but outright. Kind of sucks but you do get a$10/ month credit as an existing customer so my 24 month payments are like $25. That means I get the phone for like 650 instead of 850.

What are you talking about? There is no 10$ per month for the 24 months of a 24 month credit. What you be taking about is not there.

It is there. I'm on the SERO plan and I get $15/ month bill credit if I upgrade using lease or installment billing.

Sorry brother, I think VZ will give you a LG 43 inch TV if you go with them but that's for the LG G6 on 24 mo plan. But I haven't seen a thing on this phone and I believe subbing is dead because of no contract carrier aggregation. Every year I upgrade cash up front purchase for the new phone and if I'm unhappy I'll sell it on Swappa and move on. This way I'm not stuck and will always upgrade to whatever I want usually it costs me a couple hundred but that's nothing considering the benefits. Hope this helps.

It seems it varies from type of plan. I've got a unlimited data plan from like 6 or 8 years ago with 4 lines and the other guy has a SERO plan.
I think the credit is do to trying to equalize what you are already paying in phone subsidies built into your existing plan.

That's a BS. Cancel your order and get it directly from Samsung. Pay the full price or installments, call Sprint and activate your new device on your old plan.

I was able to pre-order the Galaxy S8/S8+ for $299/$399 on my grandfathered unlimited data plan on a business account.

Okay heres the skimmy.
If your on a business account, you still have the option for 2 year agreements. Thats buisness plan perk.
Regular OLD plans, like the Sero, Everything Data, some times the old unlimited plans, will get whats called a Loyalty lease credit. Which can be 10 -15 dollars depending on the device. You get that because of the fact that your on an older plan. No store, and now even customer care and online are supposed to offer a 2 year unless you're on business.
Depending on your plan, changing to an newer unlimted plan is usually cheaper anyway. one line on 1500 everything is 130 bucks...so not worth it.

Subsidized plans are done for all carriers.
2 year contracts are a thing of the past. If you have certain older plans you can get a $10 bill credit on your installment billing. Sprint brought back the Galaxy Forever plan where you can upgrade every year on an 18 month lease, however the phone has to be in good working condition with you turn it back in. You have the option the buy the phone after the lease term for a couple hundred dollars or so. Only benefit of lease is not having to pay the taxes when you pick up your phone, as it gets spread out of over the 18 months on your bill. I would just pre-order from Best Buy on installment billing and get the S8+ for $100 off. There are only a handful of older plans that are eligible for the bill credit. If you happen to have that plan you will be getting an S8+ for a total of $510 after credits and $100 pre-order promotion.

I have the available $10 a month bill credit which would be $240 over the life of the phone ... debating on this or the $150 Sam's club gift card

i just ordered the lg g6 (for the wife) and the s8+ for me. sprint rep said no more 24 month payments...just 18 month leasing only, then either trade in or buy out the rest. now on spring site i do only see leasing on the s8+, but on the lg g6..it shows 24 month payments. she said it literally changed that day...4/21. dont trust what she says....she also told me if i didnt do the updates on the s8+, the software would destroy itself...lol.
but can anyone confirm this?

From what I understand as long as you're on a qualifying legacy plan, you will get a back office credit of 10 a month for just having it on a lease or installment agreement. If not call in and make sure they apply the promo to the line.
So you would get both. The card is from Sam's club, the promo is through sprint.

we were told the stores do it different than online. online shows 24 payments, store says lease only. SUPPOSEDLY onine is suppose to be changing. guess i better call sprint and see.

Just got the best deal for a Fuze

I received this phone a few days ago and it was free with 2 years contract.
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=1031847&highlight=htc
so now, i just need to have it unlock for tmobile.
You do realize that you'll have to pay ETF, equipment cost, and your first bill right? All that should come to about $550.
175(ETF) + 40(1st bill) + 36(activation) = $251 still a good deal.

None of you people read the contract agreement? If you cancel a contract (in the first 6 months was it?) then you have to pay EQUIPMENT cost which is like ~$300/$400. I don't remember. I tried to do that when I got my free tilt. They said I couldn't and I would have to pay equipment cost. and this was AFTER 60 or so days.
No 3G on T-Mobile with the Fuze either.

Nope, nobody listens. I have been saying this for ever. You are 100% correct.
I got mine free thru the letstalk deal. but i wont be cancelling.
Letstalk, amazon and newegg are the few retailers that have a clause in additon to the att clause. It usually states if you the buyer cancel before the 6 month of the billing cycle, you will be chagrge the full amount of the phone or to some of that extent since 3rd party have a severe discount when you sign up with them for example letstalk is giving awat the fuze for free.

I just went through the service agreement with ATT (on there website) - there NO mention of "Equipment Cost". Within 30 days you have to return the phone, after - pay $175 ETF.
Maybe with other retailers agreement differs...

I just got the first bill last week, there was no data charges or it doesn't have a data plan.
The equipment cost is not listed on the ATT contract and I think it only applies to Letstalk, Amazon and other retailers because they make commissions off the contract but that contract has to be valid for 6 months.

Same deal here. I had to reup for 2 years. I was out of contract on my old line so when I got the Fuze they tried to make me start a new line with a new number. After 2 days of arguing they finally transferred my old line/number to the new contract.
Me and my employees deal with this issue daily............for the record............ATT will charge you 175ETF First Bill and Act fee and small proration of days (if you keep >14days, Less than that only pay ETF and proration)................LETSTALK, Amazon and other authorized dealers (YES some agent locations do this) will charge you their own fees if desired, its in the agreement you sign WITH THEM........Further more, keep in mind Walmart.com prices include "LETSTALK MIR's" these also fall under the above additional charge clause.
PLEASE READ YOUR MIR AND SMALL PRINT WHEN YOU THINK YOU'RE GETTING A DEAL. DON'T SCREW YOURSELF OVER LIKE MANY DO DAILY, I LIKE TO THINK READERS OF XDA ARE SMARTER THAN THAT

Price?

Well I have read numerous sources saying it will be 199.99 with 2 Year Contract.. Now I am seeing receipts for 149.99 with contract or 299.99 without contract. I truly want this phone and the 50$ wont stop me, but hey it is 50$ more dollars for apps and accessories. Does anyone know if they price was changed or if I should bring in a picture of the receipts to get a 50$ off or will I just end up paying 200$?
AT&T and Samsung posted on their twitter that it is $199 with a contract, and $350 without a contract.
I'm hoping it is $350, cause that's how much money i got for it! haha.
Yah, but how are people getting it for 300 or 150?
I have no idea. I haven't seen any receipts and such.

and
http://imgur.com/EYdsN.jpg
Now I'm jealous. I hope it is $300 but i'll settle for $350!
haha yah I mean, paying an extra 50 really won't stop me. But hey, thats 50$'s I can use on accessories etc
I guarantee that it's 349.99 without a contract and 199.99 with a 2 year contract.
The people that are getting 50 or 100 dollars off the prices of the phone is because of the AT&T upgrade advantage.
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/upgrade-advantage.jsp
If the primary line on your account is over $100 then that line will be upgrade eligible every year.
I believe they have three ways of paying.
1. upgrade elligable its $199 with a 2 year contract and USE your elligability.
2. Not elligable for an upgrade its $350. with a 2 year extension on your contract but not using your future upgrade.
3. No contract $499.
I just called and thats what two local stores told me.
I was just told 500 off contract from an AT&T store.

Woa, that'd be completely new for att. I've never seen any signs or ads anywhere for previous phones that describe option 2, always just 1 or 3 (renew your contract or just no contract pricing - no inbetween). If I'm wrong, I apologise, but I haven't heard of that before.
I called a store from one of the recepits that people have posted, and they told me that there was no way some of the pricing, nor sales have happened. I was told $500 dollars from a store that was $300.
I was also told $199 from a store that sold one for $149 and that I was reading the receipt wrong and instead of the "samsung i897" like the receipt says, it was really a 3gs 32 gb phone. Basically, I was told that I am an idiot and it wasn't really that price.
what the hell is going on?
Now I'm just more mad than anxious.

That makes a lot more sense. So I think that actually clears up everything. Stores don't sell them at different prices, you may just be eligible for an additional discount. But I will still call several places when it is out to try to pick it up for 150$
So since my phone line is $150 a month, but i just upgraded last month, I am able to get this phone for $350 or $500?
wait... I want to get this phone but no data plan... as an att customer already which pricing would fit me

Honestly, I don't think think you are eligible for any of the 50 or 100$ off. Now I still haven't quite found out why some stores are charging 350 or 500 so I would simply suggest calling around.

Well I don't think you can purchase the phone without a data plan. Maybe off contract, but if you want the 2 year agreement price, you HAVE to get a data plan. As for the 50 and 100$ off, you NEED a 2 year agreement and that means you NEED a data plan.

Bought phone on launch..

and paid 200 bucks.. think there is any way i can get att to give me a better deal since i can get it for free at walmart???
From what I read, the only way you can get it for free is if you sign up for an AT&T account that is way higher than standard.
I could be wrong though.
I thgt tht i could get a good discount on my captivate phone, but the sales rep told me at the ATT store that if anyone was eligible for an upgrade it would show automatically on their account.
He said the ATT software runs some "algorithms" based on the prev history, plans etc etc..
The walmart eligibility requires tht u should be on a plan paying $100 or more for month for the past year and no upgrade has been made on the phone over some period, Additional points if u have a lower rate plan.
Bottomline, not everyone can get the phone for free at walmart. Likewise not everyone can get the $50 off on the $199 contract plan.
My phone cost me $199 + $45 (9.25% on the original price of $499) in California. can anyone in CA confirm this?
Thanks

Why would you pay tax on the full price of the phone? I was only taxed for the $200 price. I live in Arizona though, different taxing methods in CA?
That's how Apple does it too. They tax the highest price.
i was only charged tax on the actual purchase price of $199.99 in socal... but then again, this was a manager override because the stores were having issues with the actual pricing when the barcode was scanned...

I just ordered it from Walmart as an upgrade on my plan.
They told me it has to be the primary phone if it's a family plan. The secondary lines aren't eligible for the free price. I had the old 550 minutes plan, which I had to change up to 700 minutes. After my discount thru work, it was $8 more than I pay now. Other than that, they told me I just have to maintain that plan for 6 months to avoid charged from them, and I'll get the phone for free.
I guess it could come back from AT&T as a "NO" when they check with them, but I checked 6 ways from Sunday with them and they said I was eligible for any upgrade.
Im in CA too, the tax is just crazy
but one way around it is to get your phone off amazon wireless, which doesnt have tax for CA (yet)

If you buy it through Amazon wireless, you pay no tax in CA.

Contract vs. No contract

As the title says, on no contract right now $79 unlimited everything plan with a G2, and want to get a G2x.
Amazon is selling it for $509 outright (no tax and shipping included).
Or sign a contract on the same $79 plan and get it for $149 and port my # over to the contract line and cancel the no contract one.
Now here's my theory. I looked it up and Tmo's ETF is $200. $149+200=$349. Much cheaper than $509 and the same plan I have now. Yes, I know 2gb data before throttling but I checked my history and I havent used more than 6-700mb at the most, so its a non-issue.
Any thoughts if going contract is the best way since the ETF + on contract phone price is cheaper and getting the same plan for the same price anyways? BTW, no plans to cancel Tmo anytime soon (not trying any sing contract and cancel gimmick), I just mean as an insurance policy down the road to get out if need be.
ive thought about signing a 2 year contract, keeping my unlimited data (3g, dont care for 4g) then canceling.
I don't know if your in the united stated but I got mine at a Radioshack for $499.99 plus tax. Also they have a trade and save program so i traded in my hd2 and got $95 for it so that helped a bit.
If you are not signing the contract, you can get Even More Plus unlimited plan for 59.99 and save 20$ per month.
1 yr in the off-contract, you would have saved 240$. Cheaper compared to the contract price. I got mine directly from tmo store for full price.
It's $80 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data. $60 is for talk only. Thing is if you use Google Voice for texting you don't need a text plan.
The 59.99 unlimited everything plan existed, but only for about a day before Tmo shut it down.
Its the same on or off contract right now $79.99.
The question really is $509 from Amazon or $149 with a contract (if the tmo ETF is $200 as I believe it still is).
Seems like off contract and pay $500 for a phone isnt cheaper anymore now that they dropped the contract plan to $79.99 also and the discount on the phone is more than the ETF.
I bought mine from amazon because tmobile refused to sell it to me w/o upgrading my plan. Im on an old g1 plan @ $59. So i ponied up the $509, and recieved a g2x a few days later. Unfortunately the one i got has screen bleed pretty badly so called amazon and they are sending out a replacement and labels to ship old one back for free. They also said i could wait up to 30 days to ship back the old one...pretty nice. So the one thing i can say about going with amazon is they have great customer service...at least for me.
I just refuse to pay 80 a month for phone service. Its just too rich for my blood.
At T-Mobile store I got no contract family plan for 2 lines for 110 750 minutes unlimited text and data. Also they offered 500 bucks credit with no apr which I used to get my g2x. So um paying 130 a month for unlimited without contract
Sent from my G2x
I bought mine Saturday from a T-Mobile store without a contract and use my Simple Mobile SIM in it, which does not require you to SIM unlock the phone since its still tied to T-Mobiles infrastructure. $60/month for unlimited talk, text and internet.
You do have to set a custom APN in order to get proper service.

If you cancel your plan, don't you also have to pay the difference between the full retail price of the phone and what you originally paid for it?

Do you really think T-Mobile and its sellers are not smart enough to do the math on this?
Read the contracts....here is what Amazon Wireless says:
$150.00 for phone
$ 35.00 for activation
$ 1.50 for taxes
$200.00 for T-Mobile early termination
$250.00 for Amazon wireless early termination
$636.50 vs $509 for just buying the phone without a contact....

I don't know if your in the united stated but I got mine at a Radioshack for $499.99 plus tax. Also they have a trade and save program so i traded in my hd2 and got $95 for it so that helped a bit.

HD2's are selling for 200+ on Craigslist. Why not sell it there?

And what would that be? (Mine works fine, just asking for those that choose to go this route.)

Never heard of Simple Mobile until now. It seems like a great deal from looking at the website. So it's basically just like having T-Mobile service? What's the catch?
If you sign a contract with t-mobile and cancel, I know they make you either return the phone or pay the difference between what you bought it for and the full price of the phone. I'm not sure how long you have to be on the contract so they won't charge you that difference.
There is an even more plus plan that is $60/month with 500 min, m2m, unlimited text and web. Unless you need more minutes, that's a pretty good deal.

Not anymore, unfortunately. They axed the EM+ plans a couple weeks ago.
That sucks. I'm on EM+ $79 (1000 min, unlimited SMS/Data, 5gb cap).
Guess I better not change it any time soon.
I sold my Nexus One for $250. Bought the G2x outright. So $250 out of pocket.

Simple Mobile sounds amazing on the surface. The catch is that they lie about their "unlimited" plans. After 1 GB they throttle you. I've heard this in multiple places, but a quick Google search brings up many results:
- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909359

Nah.
They just removed them from the website.
They did this to "reduce confusion". Iin reality, they just wanted to make people think that they're gone (and succeeded for the most part), so that people sign up for higher rate plans and 2 year contracts.

You can switch plans whenever you want, the only thing is you'll get a new 2 yr. Contract each time.

The new price plans are equivalent to the old "even more plus" plan. Except with a 2yr contract now. Existing customers that had service for @ least 90 days can switch to these plans..the big difference is you lose out your discounted upgrade when eligible..phones are purchased at full retail price with the option to finance the phone by adding $10-$15 a month on your bill..same goes for new activations.

You can change plans anytime you want, and it won't affect your 2 year contract or upgrade eligibility. You do need to keep a data plan if you are on contract with a smart phone, otherwise the lowest cost plan available will hold up your end of a contract.
I know where I am going on monday. I just got my phone in the middle of June so there should not be an issue with me getting this plan.
Actually, this is my plan, just 20 bucks cheaper now.
Yeh, thanks for posting this. I just signed up on the 13th of June, and this new plan offers me the same that I have now for $20 less. Unlimited talk, text, and data, throttled after 2GB/month. I will be looking for customer service next week.
I could switch, but my 5GB before throttle would go down to 2GB, not that it matters now because I'm stuck on 2G, but if I move... I might miss that extra 3GB, but is it worth $20 more?
T-Mobile is set to announce Wednesday that it plans to cut the price of its smartphone plans. Most significantly, its mid-tier plan--which includes unlimited phone calls, text messages, and data--drops by $20 to $59.99 a month. In comparison, Sprint's comparable plan--which includes unlimited data, text, and calls to other cell phones--costs $69.99 a month.
For heavier data users, T-Mobile offers a $74.99 plan with an allotment of 5 gigabytes of data before throttling, which is $15 less than before. It also offers a lower-end, data-less plan for $49.99 with unlimited phone calls and text messages. That plan was previously $65. If you choose to pay for the phone through monthly installments, you can sign up for a 200-megabyte data option for $5 a month. Traditional contract customers can get the same option for $10 a month. The plans will be available on July 24.

Ah let's see. I'm paying $80 now for 1500 minutes, unlimited texts, 5 GB of data
With the new plan:
unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, 2GB data for $60
unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, 5GB data for $75
Wow, even switching to the new plan at 5GB is cheaper! I might as well switch to 2GB until my city gets 3G then up to 5GB later...
Is there any catch to these new plans?
so basically if we bought our phones on the $79.99 deal and did not have to pay full price, we will have to pay for the phone in full but will get $20 less per month in monthly bill?

i'm hoping that i am allowed to switch this Monday. i got my phone in late May so it hasn't been a full 2 months yet.
I am on the 5gig plan but check it, prepaid. 70 bucks. Have been on this plan since i bought my phone used online back in june. prepaid plans are comin up in the world. no more pay by the minute. I get unlimited everything with 5gig 4g cap. beautiful. been on tmo prepaid for about 3 years now starting way back with flexpay. its worked out great for me
so in all actuallity you can go and just buy a prepaid sim card and hop on the plan right now if you wanted to.

This is not correct. I just finished dealing with the retentions department on the phone (and this can be confirmed if you go online and try to change your plan to the Value Unlimited Plan). If you change to the Value plan, you are charged $200 migration fee on your next bill, which accounts for the difference in price for the phone.
I argued for 15 minutes that I HAD a brand new phone, but that since it was so problematic, the retentions department rep sent me a replacement phone...never said it was a refurbished model. And that when I went to update it the other day, it refused to update...so I called LG and it was confirmed that my DWP model is a factory refurbished model. I argued that I should not have to pay $200 for the difference in price for a brand new phone, since I have a refurb. She came back after several minutes and offered to put me on the new value plan starting next month if I meet them halfway and agree to pay $100 instead of the $200. I was tired of arguing and went ahead and agreed. I figured $20 less per month for 24 months is worth a lot more than $100 today. She was telling me that the biggest problem with them agreeing to move me over for free was that I'm such a new customer...I haven't built up any "tenure". So if you have been with T-mobile for much longer, I suppose it's possible for you to argue your way to a free migration.
Anyway, I'm satisfied with the deal.
So, being I signed up for a new plan on June 21st, I will have to pay 200 dollars to switch from paying 80 a month for unlimited talk, text, and 2GB data to the 60 plan that is the exact same thing, just 20 bucks less?

Yes, I just signed up June 13th for the same plan you did. But since I took the discounted price for the phone and signed the 2 year contract, when I wanted to switch to this cheaper version of the same plan today, they asked me for the difference of the cost of the phone...$200. I feel fortunate to have gotten the deal for $100 instead. It's still a great savings overall.
I agree. I will still do it, that is for sure.

Well called T-mobile about this plan and this is what they told me i could do. Since im a new customer i can do either these options:
Pay 59.99 Unlimited everything, BUT charged extra 5-15 dollars(depending on phone) and pay full price of phone in monthly installments over 20 month period.
Buy a phone off ebay, CL, or Pay full price in store of any phone and then i just get charged just 59.99
Or sign up for a "Regular contract" and pay 79.99 and buy phone of choice(discounted 2yr agreement price) And they run credit check to see if their is a deposit.
So many choices idk which one i should do? lol
Ok. I see uncertainty so I will try to address them all in this post. The new plans are great.. No matter how you look at them you are always going to come out in the positive in the long run. Unlimited Talk, Text, and Unlimited web with 2 GB of high speed data is $59.99. You will have to sign a new 2 Year contract. If you are on the Even More Plus plan you CANNOT come over onto the new plan (I know a loop hole). If you currently are on T-mobile and are in contract you will have to pay a migration fee that ranges from $200-0 depending on your current tenure. 18+ months will not have to pay a migration fee. On the new plans you must purchase your phone at the full retail but many will have EIP (Equipment Installment Plan) which will allow them to break the payments over a period of 21 months (If done at the store first payment will be at the store so that will make it 20 months).
For a family plan for 2 Lines Unlimited Talk, Text, and 2 GB of high speed web it will cost 99.99!!! That is super cheap. The same applies to a family plan as an individual. On the Even more plans it used to cost $179.99 ($80 savings) and compared to the classic plans $139.99, you save $40. Think about it..
Compared to the classic plan it is cheaper to be on the value plan on the long run. If you purchased 2 sensations (I chose this because its the most expensive phone I have) that makes is $550 x 2 = $1,100. If you take $40 savings x 24 months = $960 in rate plan. On the classic plan you still have to purchase the phones at $200 x 2 = $400. So for the value plan over 2 years take 99.99 x 24 (months) + $1,100 for phones = $3,500. While the classic plan will cost you 139.99 x 24 (months) + $400 (for the phone with MIR applied) = $3,760.
For 5 Lines Unlimited Talk Text and web 2 GB high speed on the value plan cost $205. Compared to the classic it will cost $290. 5 sensation on the value plan will cost $2750 while on the Classic it will cost $1000.
Value plan: $205 x 24 + $2750 = $7670.
Classic plan: $290 x 24 + $1000 = $7960.

i don't not see this on their website? also do you know if you already have a plan with them for 2 months, do you still have to pay the full price for the phone? for me they did a price match.
