(HOW-TO) Remove Annoying Secondary GPS Icon in Status Bar & Get Stock Sense Icons - HTC Bolt / 10 Evo Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello Gang,
I just recently picked up an Sprint HTC Bolt. After mistyping a command and having to RUU twice, I finally got my phone customized to my liking, and I like this phone; A LOT.
However it was three things that truly bothered me:
The Bloatware, The Ugly Boot animation, and The Location Icon(s).
I was able to remedy the top two by rooting and S-OFFing to completely uninstall (not disable) bloat and for the boot animation, just changing the name of boot animations (from hTC_bootanimation.zip to sprint_bootup.zip and etc; it's a guide here on XDA by another awesome member) to re-obtain the stockm HTC Boot aniamtion.
There was still one issue for me. For some reason, there are TWO location icons. One for E911 (I think) and One for actual GPS. It was just taking up space and annoyed me, as when the GPS was in use, it was another icon beside that one which didn't make any since to me. I also wanted the stock HTC status bar Icons Back. There is No Xposed for Nougat (yet, that I know of) so I spent a while figuring out how to do this.
ALAS, I finally found out how. It was a line in the default.xml file! (Can't remember the exact one but it's similar to the Sku_ID line on the One Max for changing those same ugly Sprint icons). I changed that and now I no longer having the annoying, taking-up-space, secondary GPS/Location Icon. It also changed the Status Bar icons to the stock HTC Sense ones (not the Sprint ones).
Not sure if anybody else was like me wanting to get rid of the useless secondary location icon in the status, but just in case you were (or you may have wanted stock Sense icons, whatever the case may be), here you go! Enjoy.
Instructions:
I) Download the file.
II) Unzip.
III) Go to /system/customize/acc using a root browser of your liking and rename the default.xml in there presently to xxxdefault.xml or whatever.
IV) Go to your SD card where you extracted the downloaded default.xml and move that to /system/customize/acc/
V) Set Permissions
VI) Reboot.
VII) Profit!

editing battery, signal icons?

I am looking to replace the upper icons in WM 6.0 with custom ones, the question is are they in the rom (if so cannot edit, right?) or are they in wm somewhere?
I've been slowly going through the system and have not found them yet, any suggestions on where to start?
I have some fantabulous advice on where to start my American amigo.
FIrst, the files SHOULD be editable, they are simply image files under the \Windows directory. I'm pretty sure they all have different names and are not grouped together, but they should be easy to spot (I imagine they will end in a picture format extension IE .bmp .gif etc.
BUT, it is important to note that, like most Windows Operating Systems, the OS doesn't trust you. Therefore, the files are hidden!
If you just have the normal Explorer, I don't know if it has an "unhide system files" choice.
I personally would go download and install Total Commander, Resco Explorer etc, one of which does have that choice.
After that, search that folder and you will find them.
PS I am not rambling, I have actually seen them in there
Cheers!
Thank you for the good start.
I had a feeling they had to be in the \windows\ or \windows\system folder.
Now the auduous task of finding, editing and replacing them, I always hated this part, since my patients is minimal at best.
Thanks again for the quick tip, I'll try to post a screenshot when I get them done.

NOTE: 90% of these are the logos for the top bar. One or two relate to the input logo at the bottom bar (IE Keyboard and Pen, I believe it is the Input_Kboard and Pen files). One or two others relate to the image you see when you click the sound icon in the top bar and it gives you two sound parameters to adjust, each with a logo at the top. Use your judgement and eyes to decide which is which. Most you will have seen already.
I don't know if this list is complete, I may have missed some. If you find any others in your searches, let us know and I will add them to this list. I needed to make this list anyway as I am trying to cook a ROM for Himalaya and need to know what I can remove. (For example, Himalaya's don't have EDGE or 3G, so straight away there are eight or so logos that can be removed).
Also note that other programs have access to the top bar and may add their own icons, as Messenger (which does not come installed in our roms) did. Perhaps it is only Microsoft programs that can add their own icons, who knows.
PS Good luck, look forward to the screen shots.
PPS Some of the logos I have never seen appear, but I have been in situations where they should appear (IE No SIM card, but the NoSim image never appeared). I find it interesting that while half follow a naming convention, others don't (IE 1xRTT_connect_PPC.bmp and gprs_connect.bmp without the _PPC). I wonder if this has anything to do with it not working.
(Rant over)
Were you ever able to change the battery icons? I was trying the same bmps but they do not change even with a soft reset for me, even tho the file is changed in the directory to my customed one it still remains as the default. Any tips tricks or ideas? My thought is a dll but I'm relatively new to this and am very unsure. Thanks for the tips and hope to hear you have done it or at least figured out a possible way.
I can help you to find the icons
There are include as ressource in DLL and we can replace it
The only icon I can find is the Signal Strength Icon
Any idea ? Do you replace it ?

Remove AT&T from TF3D?

Loving my Fuze so far! Used the process to hard reset and remove the bloatware....not quite ready to take the plunge with a cooked ROM just yet...
On the home screen above the clock there is a bar that just lists the AT&T logo in the upper right. Nothing else. And because of it I have to scroll on my home screen to see everything.
How the heck do I get rid of this useless waste of real estate?
Interesting, I didn't even notice this but true, what a waste of space! I'm hoping for something like HCC, Home Screen Customizer coming back for Fuze, that was one great app!
You arent kidding! I'm a little bummed, my Tilt had more usable home screen space
hope some1 can find a way.
Two ways to do it:
1) go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2796868&posted=1#post2796868 and aply the original TF3D theme. It will also change your orange to green in the theme though
2) use the diamond TF3D configuration tool and go you tabs and remove 'unknown'
choice 1 -Don't care for change of color
choice 2 - Diamond config tool did not remove the AT&T logo -
Any other suggestions or ideas?
sorry- i didn't read the top post well enough. What I did is get rid of the AT&T tab which I hate. If you look at the other screens of TF3D there is always something on top- the first one should probably list Home but I guess it's true- we could all live without them all entirely...
Unzip and copy this file into the windows directory. Let me know if this works.
Thanks

That file already exists in the windows directory. Thus, no change. Still looking at the "AT&T" gray bar across the top of the screen.
I certainly appreciate you trying to help -
I removed the bar using the customizer but I think that qt&t is reading it from the operator name which may never be able to get read of unless someone really customizer tf3d.
FYI - That's not AT&T's doing. Look at all the unlocked TF3D screenshots. It's the line that lists what screen you are looking at or the carrier if it's the home screen. It's in all the cooked ROMs as well since it's part of the basic functionality.

First close TF3D, then extract file into windows directory, over writing existing file. Start TF3D again. Logo should be gone. Worked for me.
I am losing my touch with this Touch (Fuze) -
Could not overwrite - got error message that basically said that file is write protected and I do not have permission.
Tried to delete the original and then replace - again receive denials.
I have tried to, using a registry editor, make changes to the file (make it able to be read; edit it; rename it;, etc) without any success. All attempts have been rejected.
Perhaps I could trouble you as to how to either overwrite or delete and replace.
Thanks

Copy the file to somewhere else on the phone, maybe like a temp directory.
Then use TotalCommander to copy the file into windows directory.
Thats it.

Thanks - finally successful in removing the AT&T logo - however, the gray bar remains -
I certainly appreciate the efforts that you folks have gone to.
If we could move the date up to the empty space, that would be good.
Am I the only one that has both the date and AT&T on that line?
I wouldn't want to get rid of it, because it would mean getting rid of the date.
I'm using a sprint flip-clock, but I don't recall how it looked in stock form.
Standard factory ROM.
I think what you are wanting to get rid of is what I've seen on here referred to as the top "curtain". Do a search on that. I've seen it mentioned somewhere, but I couldn't find it off the bat.
This removes the curtain: http://www.ppcmobility.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261
Haven't tried it so I don't know if it does the trick

uninstalled HTC Lockscreen and got bad flan lockscreen

I have searched the forums but cannot find a fix for this.
I am a noob when it comes to rooting/flashing but just rooted my hero and am running ddamage control v2.02, i think it is great but I have always hated the HTC lock screen, the flan one imo is much better.
I looked around and found that by entering
adb remount
adb shell
cd system/app
rm HtcLockScreen.apk
rm HtcLockScreen.odex
reboot
and rebooting the phone I get a messed up version of the flan style lock screen. It was supposed to remove the HTC lock screen and give a flan version. I am thinking that it may be because I did not type exit, but rather safely removed the hardware.
Anyway the problem is that the flan lock screen is the green lock circle that is supposed to slide to the right is in the bottom middle part of the screen, the only way to unlock it is to slide it up/the silent circle must be slid down to enable it to be silenced. Also the time is on the left side, and it is currently 12:15, however the time will show
12:1
5
because of the unusual version of the lock screen.
I looked around and found a fix that was supposed to re add the HTC lock screen, however the fix was for a 1.6 version and I cannot find the thread.
If anyone could help me either reinstall the original HTC Slider or preferably a properly working flan style I would appreciate it. I am thinking that because it is not an official ROM the developer did do a great job, but did not make it with the original flan style.
Here ya go.........................BTW there is no fix yet....

u didnt do anything wrong when deleting the files. the flan screen is messed up on sprint release so far. No one has attempted or has failed to fix is so far
thanks alot, appreciate it. Obviously I would rather have the working HTC Lock screen than a broken flan one.
Did the same way. Could find no way to get the htclockscreen to install again. Pushed it, ran it, whatever...I ended up just re-flashing.

maybe one of the dev out there could look at it and fix it for us. maybe one day.
My HTC Sense lock screen is working again. Thanks for the link again.
I think a majority of Sense users love sense but don't like the lock screen, it is easier to open in the pocket and the flan style is smoother and more natural

Yeah and flan looks better IMO. And being able to silence the phone easily is another plus.

I may be a little late with this..... but i found when i removed the .apk and saved it for replacing later via estrongs I was able to simply copy and past back in /system/app and reboot. my original lockscreen was back with no problem. Although you must have the root options checked in options of estrongs file manager to be able to move the file.
Figured I post up what i found.
Bret
forgot to mention.....
I am sure others may know but you can also download lockbot from the market for free which has a few lockscreens, the pay or pro version has the flan lockscreen and have confirmed it works on DC2.1 treve mixture that I am running with no problems.... battery life good, VVM works, Location spot on, and no prl issues..(anymore)
anyway there my 2 cents And thanks to everyone out here I am starting to learn. All the devs keep it up!!!)Your Awesome
Looked at it a little bit
So, I really wanted to get the Flan Lockscreen working/appearing correctly so I started digging into the layout XMLs in framework-res.apk.
From what I can tell, it's forcing everything into the left 100 pixels of the screen causing things to wrap.
My first thought was to override the widths/heights from the -1 and -2 values to actual screen values (240x320). I updated most of the keyguard*.xml and screen*.xml files (hexedited) but the screen is still garbled. There may be a parent screen that is causing the restriction still though.
My second thought was there's an image file missing or is sized incorrectly. I pulled all the .pngs from DC1.0 (it was working there, correct?) framework-res.apk and placed them in the newer framework-res.apk. This changed the screen so that the slide buttons are at least visible (they weren't showing on DarchLegend at all) even if in the wrong place.
There might be something in the smali code that is preventing things working too... I still need to look into services.jar and policy.jar.
If anyone has any other ideas or insights, please let me know.

Quick question. How are you looking into the .xml files? I tried looking into this as well and got stuck at not being able to view the xmls.

There's a java utility called AXMLPrinter2 that will take the Android XML files and create a text file. Unfortunately it's only a one-way process, so editing of the XML files requires Hex-editing. That's how I edited the status_bar.xml file to change the font from white to black on the Taskbar.

Wow, you have put in a lot for that.
I am running damage control v.2r2 and I believe that because it is not an official rom, damageless did not put in unneccesary android suff, the lockscreen being one of them. Their wouldnt be a point in installing or including in the rom a perfect standard messaging app, if HTC has their own.
However someone earlier in this thread gave me an .apk of the HTC lockscreen after installing it and rebooting it worked perfectly again.
I know this sounds stupid because I have no knowledge of developing at all but is their anyway to get an .apk of the 2.1 or even the 2.0 lock screen and just install it, it seems that it would just repair the broken version in damages rom, and all we would need to do is manually disable the HTC lock screen.
Any thoughts?

The Android lockscreen is part of the framework, separating it out would create other problems within the ROM. There isn't an "Android lockscreen" APK, the code is built into services.jar, framework.jar, policy.jar, and framework-res.apk.
I did have another thought, maybe there's something in the HTC code that is conflicting or overriding the stock settings. I'll take a look at some of the com.htc files tomorrow and see if anything jumps out at me.

that would be great. That sounds about right perhaps their is something in damages rom that are overriding the stock setting?
I wonder though if someone running a stock rooted hero rom, could remove the hero lock screen and get the normal android "menu" lock
You know what? I bet it IS somewith with the HTC settings. Why else would they push out the ROM with all the HTC stuff working and not the Android lockscreen working? Because we're not supposed to be modifying the phone in the first place! So therefore HTC is adjusting the settings without regards to what Android stuff will be broken (because they assume we are going to only use Sense). Good thought.
if i remove it? when i unlock it will i get the animations? like on the normal htc losckreen or no?

OFFICIAL: MIUI - Share your customized icons here and mini-HOWTO.

So miui had been great and allows us to customize our own icon on launcher. So I thought maybe we can share our icons here for theming needs.
Some background for those who are not aware of what this is.
In MIUI, at first boot after flashing, miui will rip through your list of apps in /data/app/ and extract the icon associated with that app and put it into the "/data/system/customized_icons_1" folder. For instance, if I have the appbrain app on my /data/app/, there will be a corresponding PNG file in /data/system/customized_icons_1/com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps.png.
Now what do you do with this PNG file?
First of it's an image file, and if you do theming or for some reason you don't like the default icon, you can certainly replace them with newer icon.
So cool, how do I replace the default icon?
OK, so go find an icon of your choosing in PNG format and specific size (check mine for sample). Rename your new PNG to the exact same name of the app, so in my example the new icon I downloaded named "someofthepic.png", then I'll rename it to "com.appspot.swisscodemonkeys.apps.png" to match with appbrain.
After you renamed it, upload these to /data/system/customized_icons_1/ and reboot your phone. You will then have a brand spanking new icons.
This process can be applied to newly installed apps as well.
CREDIT: these icons are from Suave HD theme I got over miui forum.
I know the app but not sure what is the related "system" name of the app, what do I do?
Head over to http://www.androlib.com/, put in the name of your app, in my example it'll be "appbrain" and search. Scroll to the middle of the page, the section above screenshot will have what is call a "Package Name". This is the one that you need to copy&paste.
EDIT: these customized icons will only work if your apps are located on /data/app and if MIUI launcher parsed it to create an icon in /data/system/customized_icons_1 folder. For maps and other which is system apps, you will have to tinker with the apk itself or the framework-res.apk
Thanks for the write-up, I swapped a couple of icons (Yahoo!, facebook, ScanLife and Spare Parts..) and plan to make more custom icons to match for the others I have installed now..
Great guide. Already been doing this since miui started on the evo, but go od to show others
-Swyped away on my addiction
Thanks for the how to! Already put my newfound knowledge to use!
cool dudes, glad it helps out...
After following the steps to change the icons. It worked after the reboot but after subsequent reboots, Miui reverted back to the original icon. I am using version 11.5 stable. Any thoughts as to why this may be occurring?

Same here. Some of the ones I changed are still my custom icon, where the others reverted back to the original ones.
I'm trying to change my Google maps app icon and I cant
Yup I got it to work but after a couple of reboots and and some mounts to the computer, some of them reverted back to default and after a check inside the customzied_icon folder they had reverted there to and after a delete of the file and a copy with the new icon it directly reverted back.

I had the icons there and reboots countless of times but not reverting back. What you experience is that might be some of the apps got updated in market and therefore, icons revert back obviously, and yes you have to replace them again.
Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find the folder "/data/system/customized_icons_1" anywhere, not on my phone, or on my sd card

Sense 4.0 Skinning Question

I'm trying to make my first custom skin for my EVO 4G LTE, but am having problems making any modifications stick so I know I'm doing something wrong. I'm hoping someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong.
I'm basically following these directions, which are for Sense 3.0, but I imagine most of the steps are similar.
I have installed Apk Manager 5.0.2, and I extracted all the files of M10 Tools, but I don't think I extracted them to the appropriate location (those instructions are unclear about how to set up M10 Tools). However, given the changes I want to make (a simple color change), I am of the impression that I may not need M10 Tools, yet. Of course, I may be wrong and this could be my entire problem.
I'm starting with HTC's Matte.apk, and I simply want to change the blue highlighting to red (after all, while ICS's color is blue, my phone is black and red).
Steps 3 through 8 and 10 (extracting the apk and renaming it) went fine. My new theme shows up with the correct name. I couldn't make any sense of step 9, so I basically skipped it. I assume this affects how it shows up as a file name, so after packaging it up as "signedMatte.apk" I just change that name to my desired name, and it worked fine.
I tried changing a few .pngs (blue stuff to red stuff), and I modified the progress_horizontal.xml file to have reds instead of blues. I started with minor changes just to see that the process worked, before jumping into the deep end and changing hundreds of images and files.
I recompiled, signed, moved it to my phone (system/app), and rebooted. Obviously, that skips a lot of M10 Tools steps, but I figured if my .apk has the changes I wanted, that should suffice.
So I went into Skins and selected my skin. However, the settings icons glow GREEN, and the volume bar (which I understand is controlled by the progress_horizontal.xml) is still BLUE. Why is anything the default green? And why is the volume bar still blue? Obviously the changes I made aren't taking affect.
Help on this is greatly appreciated, as it bugs me that HTC's Burgundy skin (which is essentially what I want) doesn't exist in Sense 4. I'd also like to be able to help out with releasing skins for people (I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants a red skin for Sense 4), but am obviously facing a road block here.
