So far I'm highly impressed with the video quality. Comparing the 4k to Samsung for instance they both take really good quality videos. (and huge videos). But the fact that the Image Stabilization on this blows away the competition and it's SOFTWARE based is INSANE. One of the first things I did after I got the phone set up was to walk upstairs while filming 4k and then quickly moving back down them and the optical stabilization (although it gets slightly bumpy on the way down from how fast I was moving) it was the best I've ever seen on any phone.

What were the settings on both cameras for each video?
Took a video at night low light conditions
Looks like a white bug on the video .
But it's just noise from the camera not a bug.
Tried again Dave enjoy bug thinking about getting unit replaced.

Guys, is anybody annoyed with the twitchy autofocus? I was shooting on S7, ois was not comparable with Pixel's eis, but autofocus was 100% accurate and lightning fast, you won't be able to notice it working. What's wrong with Pixel's AF? Is it curable?

I'm wondering the same thing.
I came from a Nexus 6P and the video on the latter was just brilliant!!! Specifically to low light video, it was crystal clear!!! I do a lot of metal shows records and this is very big for me...
The minute I got the XL, tried a low light video record, wow, what a disappointment!!! The video in low light and even in mid light, has a sort of smudge, like grey halo or if lens are not clean up and adding to that there's a lot of noise in the video. I did not record anything from concerts, but I'm very apprehensive... I did not expected this... not after having a 6P and knowing that this phone is one year more recent than the 6P.

I just saw this and this is the exact problem that I experience when recording in low light!!!
I also learned on google products forums, that using a 3rd party app to record video, using a different ratio/resolution can help a lot!!!
For instance, with Open Camera, if recording a video in 1440x1080 resolution (it stays at a 4:3 ratio, the same aspect when taking a photo at 12.3 MPixel) then the recording is so much better!!! The bad of Google Camera is that it's not possible to change in between many video recording resolutions. Also, in Google Camera, 4K video recording is a little better than 1080p, because it doesn't have the grey/smudge halo.
If only knew this and my 6P didn't had the battery shutoff problem, I wouldn't never get a XL !!!!
The video recording is pretty good, I usually record at 720p60 and even though it's not the sharpest video I've ever seen, it's decent.
Though at 4K it looks great, but I don't see a big improvement from the Nexus 5X which I come from.

Crisp, but lack of OIS makes for really choppy videos if you don't have a steady hand. The EIS helps a little but not much
The video image quality is great however, the lack of OIS really shows and audio quality when recording heavy bass is like nails to a chalkboard. Unfortunate for those who came from a Nexus 5 will have to endure another year of static bass audio.

There's a cover of a song, and throughout the entire video - you can hear faint and constant clicking noises. The room where it was recorded is dead silent, so I'm not sure where it's coming from but it's annoying!
Video quality is excellent. However shooting at Higher frame rate (120 or 240) there is some pixelation on the screen even though resulting video doesn't show that.
There is one thing, if you are shooting slow motion video and go to review your video and then come back to camera, it defaults back to normal speed back. You have to select slow motion mode again everytime you exit out of camera viewfinder screen.

sounds good but what is that clicking....are you saying you did this recording and you heard nothing of the sort with your human ear while recording it live?

Did a test side by side next to a Z3 Compact, camera was MUCH better.
digital stabilization is terrible, ur better off just turning it off. Its just to wobbly and unnatural.
and I get a little bit of white noise on recordings, when recording in quiet areaa.
but I like the recording more then the Note5 that I have as well, note does shoot birhter videos, but softer and less contrast. Especially in lower light where note produces unrealistic images.

My only complaint of this nice piece of gear is the video recording feature.
There is no [email protected] recording option. Even the recording quality in good light conditons at 30fps (1080p) is not smooth and really choppy
Have not see any advantage of the 4axis OIS future.
Hope to see developers that can fix this issiue with software updates.
I think the best video recording quality has the Samsung Galaxy S6/S7/Note series and the Iphone 6/6s line.

It has a great video recording quality for it's price. OIS and auto-focus is better than the more expensive flagship op3.

OIS is clearly there, try recording while driving a motorcycle. There will be no, or at least minimal, glowy images as in non-OIS enabled devices. Color rendering is still the best, S7 and 6S is behind for this one. Lighting is natural, however you may prefer S7's "always daylight" choice (i.e., it will show bright light even in dark environment), but that's completely preference. I choose natural. Slow motion is great, even if only single [email protected] choice (slowed down 4x from 120fps) I found it very useful to record fast motion videos to see it later in detail.

Miui makes it complicated to chenge to 4k, fullhd slow-mo quickly. Timelapse feature is great. There were problems with rotation for camera but software update solved them. So it is not great but nice to see they are improving littlle by little.

The quality of video is quite good. It doesn't match up with modern mirrorless cameras, but Leica optics does hand a great value to video quality. This is exactly why I'm so frustrated on the software. Camera on itself is awesome and the quality is top notch, yet deficiency of the camera application renders camera almost useless. Except for the selfie, monochrome and pro-mode parts (which are photography modes) Too bad, video is the worst part of the camera. Only in perfect conditions it will perform quite well, but at least here in Finland Sun doesn't shine around the clock. When using artificial lighting, shutter flickering happens about 80% of time because one can not lock down the shutter speed to match frequency of said lighting. And on normal-to-low light situations, noise and artifacts destroys the video quality to a point you don't ever want to use the phone for video.
video quality is very bad. to the point that i dont like shooting with it anymore. camera is bad as well. it is very frustrating. i swapped out my iphone 6s for this huawei p10 more because i was attracted with the leica branding. and i am regretting it.. it has been 3 months already since i bought this. 2 months of selling it and no body is buying this thing

Am I the only one worried with video quality of the Pixel 2?
From what I'm seeing on YouTube the last couple of days, stabilization is GREAT but the actual quality is sadly just not good. Especially when panning, it's not as smooth as say the iPhones or Galaxy devices. Tons of artifacts and jitters.

It is supposed to be activated with the 8.1 Android update. Apparently it's a stand alone chip from the 835 Snapdragon that has it's own cores & ram dedicated to the camera. It's supposed to be 5 times faster than Qualcomm chip while only using 1/10 of the power. So basically it's supposed to take the camera to the next level while being even more energy efficient.... ? Sounds great to me, can't wait to see this in action!!!!

I got around to testing the 2 XL vs the original XL, and for the most part the 2 XL exceeded the original in every way. But the Dual IS, optical and electronic, really messed up when mounted to my car. The original one was buttery smooth.

I thought the video recording quality wasn't as good as my original Pixel XL when I went into the Verizon store yesterday 10/21/17 but I noticed that when you have the 1080p video option on, when the camera app is launched, before pressing record you have to change the fps from 30 to 60 in the on-screen settings to the left of the video screen. When I did that it basically mirrored my original Pixel XL except the picture quality of the XL 2 is of course naturally better. I'm sure with the update it'll exceed all other competition.
My only question is can the note 8 camera be ported into the XL 2? Because I loved the zoom while viewing a recorded video feature, which neither the XL not XL 2 pixels have.

I'm sure there is some way to port it over. I'd be surprised if the app hasn't already been extracted.
Honestly, video means so much to me and so far, what I'm seeing on YouTube looks pretty bad. The stabilization looks promising, but the actual quality is poor. Very noisy, bad frame rate drops and jitters. Still photos might be class leading but video looks worse than my Oneplus 5 at the moment.
I hope they'll be able to improve it significantly

I noticed this too. Wasn't sure if it was my unit or in general, as I've not read any complaints. I posted (https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-2/help/strange-sound-feedback-video-recordings-t3693360) a vid I shot w/2XL and a vid from wife's iPhone.
I tested another unit in Verizon and same distortion was there. A replacement is coming, but I'm not optimistic.

I am extremely happy with the video quality now. I recently made a video. Watch at 4k. Personally I think its pretty amazing for youtube. Hard to tell the difference between this and several thousand dollar 4k cameras. Audio on the other hand is ABSOLUTE garbage and I cant connect my external mic.

Thanks a lot (already found one of those via youtube search ). The low light looks really good.. but the 2 XLs audio.. :/ Sizewise I'd only buy the 5" Pixel 2 anyway, but i still hope that this is fixable with a software update and not a problem with the microphones. LG is certrainly capable of good audio recording.
However, not to capture this thread or anything, but i am more certain every day, that this is only an issue with the 2 XL. I couldn't find many samples that are from the Pixel 2, but non of them have these audio issues:

so it's a treble or mic issue that can be fixed through software update. Video looks amazing on P2XL from all the videos shown. Remember this is a video quality thread not an audio quality thread. And honestly I didn't hear it until you said something about it and I cranked my soundbar to hear it.

I agree although most video makers will say that audio is more important than actual video quality. Most people will turn off a beautiful video that has bad audio. I personally wouldnt care 2 cents about the audio quality if I could get my external mic working but I cant get any mic working on this phone. Itll only record with the internal mic which just suuuucks. The bass is completely missing and it amplifies high hissing and clanking sounds. Sorry I got off track there lol. The video quality really is the best I have seen in a phone. Not surprised it got the best video score on DXO mark. I plan to use this as my main camera when I make an overseas trip in a few months. This paired with a few moment lenses and a gimbal will make incredible cinematic video.

I noticed a lot of noise the first few days with the pixel 2 HOWEVER it seems like most of it has gone away. Ive never experienced that happening before. Its almost like the sensor needed to warm up or something IDK. Its seems to be rocking the low light now that I have had it for a week.

I noticed a lot of noise the first few days with the pixel 2 HOWEVER it seems like most of it has gone away. Ive never experienced that happening before. Its almost like the sensor needed to warm up or something IDK. Its seems to be rocking the low light now that I have had it for a week.

The more I think about it, maybe it has something to do with google assistant and it being able to hear you from across the room? Could it be software issue where google assistant shouldn't be able use that mic while in video mode? Just a thought.
The fact that pixel2 has no the audio issue worries me it can be 2 xl microphone issue. Both should run same sw.

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Samsung Galaxy S9+ come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.

Dude, I love your videos and I would never believe I found you around here.
I discovered you because some of your Pixel 2 videos and followed your YouTube channel since then.
I returned the Pixel 2 XL because is unusable in low light conditions and got the S9+ and I couldn't be happier, and saw you did the same, and moreover, really brave to post a video explaining why you did this.

The 4k 30fps is amazing quality. Stabilisation is excellent.

The fact that you are happy with that shaky jittery pixelated processing video explain that Android users have lower quality standards. My iPhone 6 plus would make better video than that. Again I am very disappointed about camera on s9+... Hype is real
