Heat - Google Pixel XL Real Life Review

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Google Pixel XL stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Does really well with heat. Under heavy use, it gets warm, but not hot.

Hottest mine has gotten was 104 F

Under normal everyday use this phone struggles to get hotter than ambient, and under load like during setup, where normally devices can get quite hot, the pixel doesn't.

No heating I seen .... early yet but I pushed the device and seen no problems.

Mine gets pretty warm when charging, aluminum is a great conductor for heat so no surprise.

I'm liking where this thread is headed so far. I love my 6P but can't take the throttling anymore. Can't wait to chime in when my XL comes in Tuesday.
Edit: Just got my phone in yesterday and got it setup. The phone did not get hot and throttle once during the entire setup process. That is a feat in and of itself compared to the 6P. Still haven't had any throttling issues playing games in areas with terrible signal either.

My Nexus 6 got super hot with games. Can't wait to get my hands on the Pixel XL

Gets a bit warm but doesn't seem to impact performance in any way

Mine gets warm with Facebook and chrome viewing

Does anyone else's phone stay warm after charging to 100%? It was charging overnight with the supplied USBA to USBC cable slow-charging from my PC (which is what I do most of the time to charge any phone) and when I went to unplug it this morning, it was warm to the touch. Much warmer than what I'm used to with any other phone. Usually, when I unplug in the morning, the phone is cold.
Anyone else experience this?

Not noticing any problems with heat on mine. My LG G4 would frequently have to stop charging because it got too hot. Nothing like that on this phone.

Pixel XL battery gets as hot as 43 °C - 44 °C when i play some heavy games like Asphalt etc for 15-20 minutes. What is the max battery temperature that you were able to record on your Pixel?

Coming from owning Moto, HTC, and Samsung phones the Pixel is the coolest by far. Even while updating apps, streaming media, and browsing the internet/social media simultaneously I've only had get what I would consider slightly warm. I also haven't experienced any CPU throttling whatsoever. This phone is in a class by itself in terms of this stuff.

I had the same phone and same problem when using GPS, charging, streaming a lot of video, and just in general. It made it uncomfortable to hold. My Pixel XL has not given me heat problems so far in any way. As a lot of other people have said already it seems to just get warm at the very most.

So does that mean you can charge, use the GPS, and stream video with no issues? I frequently use my device as a music player and navigation in the car. My M9 currently gets too hot to charge unless the air conditioner is blowing on it.

Any reason in particular as to why you would use the slow-charging cable as opposed to the fast-charging one? I just got my Pixel XL and would love to know if this affects the internal battery in the long run. In terms of heat, can't say I have experienced anything. I used it for 3 hours straight and it wasn't even hot. Mind you I had the screen around 20% brightness.
The screen on this beast is amazing! Once indoor, I can set it to minimum and I'm fine. :good:

This device never gets hot for me with one exception: Daydream. Daydream makes this device hotter to the touch than any device I've ever used. I think this is part of the reason for the metal frame: to conduct heat away from internals and allow to dissipate.
Under normal usage the Pixel XL does not get hot. During fast charging it may get a little warm. Under daydream usage it's hell's furnace.

Yes it does.

Yes fast charging does affect the long term usability of batteries.

Rarely heats up, great

[Q] HTC Sensation 4G Battery and heat concerns

Hi All,
I got my Sensation 4G from T-Mobile US last week, and generally loving it. Beautiful form factor, great performance etc. However, I'm quite underwhelmed with both the battery life, and surprised and a little concerned with how hot the phone seems to get.
Regarding the battery, I've done a few full discharge-full recharge cycles, and what I find is that in idle, the battery seems very good. In fact it will stay at 100% for quite a while, but, when using it, the battery will visually decrease, losing charge every few minutes. This is with web browsing, twitter, facebook etc. The concerning thing is that when the battery goes down, it will frequently do a sharp 2-3% drop, instead of a 1% drop. I'm not sure if there are issues with the battery monitoring on this phone or not. If I leave the phone on idle, even for several hours, the battery will drop only a very few percent, which is great, but whilst using, half an hour or so will drop the battery by 10-15% or more. That's with the screen turned down to 25%, and sometimes 11%.
Does that more or less fit in line with everyone else's experiences?
About heat, on idle, the phone will generall maintain a temperature between 80-90F (26.6-32.2C) and feels almost completely cool. Same on charging, it barely noticeably warms up. However, when using, after maybe 10-15mins of web browsing, twitter etc, the phone will have reached temperatures of 105-110F or more (40.5-43.3C). The highest I saw it shoot to was 112F (44.4C). When at these temperatures, the phone is almost uncomfortable to hold. Not burning or dangerous, by any stretch of the imagination, but a little unpleasant. The heat is concentrated around the bottom of the phone - largely on the metal bottom back segment and base, but also the front of the screen - the capacitive buttons and the bottom of the screen.
I used it as a GPS navigator the other day for about 40 minutes in the car. Admittedly it was a sunny day, but by the end, the phone was displaying a temperature of 123F (50.5C) and showing an overheat warning. In addition, despite the fact I had it on a car charger, it had actually lost about 3% of battery.
To clarify, all the battery percentage and temperature readings I've quoted have come from the apps "batteryminder" and "battery life" - both with free versions on the marketplace.
I'm still within buyer's remorse period, so debating on whether to take it to the T-Mobile store and request a replacement unit, or, if this is normal and expected behaviour, then I have a decision to make about whether I want to keep this phone, or return it. Incidentally, I did take it to the T-Mobile store and got a replacement battery, to try that first, but it has so far made no difference.
So, I'd appreciate you folks' opinions and experience. Does what I've described seem like normal behaviour for this phone, or might I have a defective unit?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Craig
Do you have the screen on automatic brightness? Having the screen on for long periods at 100% will heat up the phone. Charging the battery and running CPU intensive tasks like navigation will obviously do that too. Add in some sunlight and this all adds up to a lot of heat in a very confined space.
Heat is a huge enemy of batteries and electronics. I'm not surprised you actually lost battery.
Moral: try to keep it cool.

Hey, thanks for your reply! Generally, I keep the screen brightness down at 11% or 25%. Those are the times when, after some use, I'll see the temps of 105-110F
The time I used navigation, it was up at 100% (or else I wouldn't have seen it, in the sunlight). I had an HTC Thunderbolt which, when I used it for navigation, with screen up at 100%, would also get pretty hot, although it wouldnt lose battery whilst on the car charger.
Where do you live? Ambient temperature may have something to do with it. I live in San Diego and I've seen mine get to 44° inside the house.
50°C is too hot though. Keep it out of the sun and if it continues to get that hot get a replacement.

I'm in the Chicago suburbs and, yeah, it's been pretty hot and humid here recently. Also, my apartment doesnt have too great air conditioning - generally, when the phone is hot, I am too! I noticed the other day, at work, it was a noticeable few degrees cooler than it would get at home. Work has great AC. In addition, in the car, the day it got REALLY hot - it was an extremely hot day, and the car was like an oven anyway.
What you say certainly makes a lot of sense. I actually ran a test with the Thunderbolt last night, and found it would get up to 105F (40.5C) after a lot of browsing in the house. The sensation was maybe 5 or 6F higher than that - which is explainable by the dual-core and metal body. The metal body also being the reason the Sensation FEELS hotter.
Seems that the day-to-day general heat of the Sensation I experience may not be out of the ordinary. I am concerned about the overheating and battery loss when I used it for navigation though.
When i used my N1 for nav on its dock and charging for about 30 Mins (during fall, limited sun) the phone would get super hot as well. I checked the temp and it was around 47C. I have yet to test this on my sensation but i would imagine it being similar due to the similar materials.
In regards to battery temp on normal usage on the sensation I get as high as 38C while playing games, I haven't seen it go past 38C though. On idle it is about 26C, and ramps up to about 33C when I use the phone and not playing games. Compared to my Atrix which runs just as hot at 38C, being largely made of plastic, it actually FEELS hotter in the hand compared to the sensation, I don't think I will ever go back to a plastic phone due to this.

Mine gets to around 45C during Angrybirds play and the ambient temperature is around 25. I don't think this should be a problem since the battery is new and may be it gets hotter during the first few charges/discharges. Furthermore the aluminum body helps to disperse the heat better.
Thanks for the replies! I think its looking like my experiences are not a problem, and the heat is not out of the ordinary.
Regarding my GPS experience, I tested this evening whilst driving home from work (a 20 minute drive). I used navigation on both the thunderbolt and the sensation to guide me home, and put both phones on the dashboard, in bright sunshine. By the time I got home, the sensation was reading 132F overheat, and the thunderbolt not much lower - 125F, overheat. Sensation felt hotter in the hand (not hot enough to burn though) than the thunderbolt - due to the metal backing I'm sure. Thunderbolt felt pretty darn hot though!
The really interesting thing was, once I got inside the house, the sensation cooled down WAY faster than the thunderbolt. I think the comment above about the metal casing dissipating heat better was right on the money.
I'm more and more edging towards keeping the sensation!

ya camp i have the same phone as you and the battery ranges from about 8-14 hours with moderate use for me. if i'm using it a lot though i can get it to 0 in about 4-5 hours-before root anyway. so i believe yours is acting normal

this phone gets hot!

damn, gets hotter than my note 4! what's the max temp you've reached? I'm at 100 degrees f now just browsing around on my lunch hour. kinda annoying, honestly.. part of the reason I hated my Moto X Pure Edition was bc that thing would regularly hit 113 degrees and be annoying to hold. hopefully this snapdragon isn't as bad as the 808 was!

I would say that this is not normal. Mine does not get hot... only warm during gaming. Also the tests confirm that the phone does not get really hot. Maybe it is still in the set up phase?
could be! battery sucks today too haha. I'm also not using wifi ever.

Are you out in the sun when this happens? I have yet to see this phone get more than warm.
I have hotspot on and I am using a wireless QC2.0
The phone gets super hot until it reach 90%, then it becomes lukewarm.
At 100% charged, its very little warm.
Is this normal?

Yes, wireless charging heats up the phone a lot. The phone automatically slows the charging speed to prevent the phone from overheating.

nah. i was inside at work at lunch from like 12-1 browsing stuff. hangouts tends to get phones hot for some reason, and i was browsing other apps for like an hour straight. but yea, she didn't hit 100 luckily, but yeah, pretty damn warm.
Mine got really hot, M9 hot during the intial install of apps etc but only gets warm afterwards
This phone is by far the hottest I've had so far

Its not good to use the phone while charnging. Especially fast charging. Maybe very little use at most.
My phone has only got slightly warm, and that was while playing a racing game. Everything ells is room temps
Heat test.

I don't feel any particular heat from mine, even while running intensive games or benchmarks, then again, I am using the Exynos variant.
A littlebit warm after 1 hour of Real Racing 3. Not hot at all. Htc one m7 was hot phone. .
Mine is charging right now with the fast charger, while streaming radio over bluetooth. Its warm, but not what I would call hot. My LG G3 got significantly hotter. Even playing with my Gear VR the other night it only got pretty warm, but I've no idea the actual temp, I just know it isn't as hot as my G3 would get sometimes just playing games.
Mine doesn't get really hot like my S5 or M9. The hottest ive experienced is like warm to the touch. Not HOT. Mind you, I'm wireless fast charging constantly.

Yeah at first I thought my S7 was cooler than my S6 Edge but even with just Web broswing for an hour or so the S7 is averaging like 90 degrees F. Current temp is 94. It's warm not "hot" but still annoying.
I think the Speck candyshell plastic case made it worse... trying to use bare now but still a bit warm.
I may have to go back to a flip case or something.
I hope I can get used to the warmth (tho I'd rather not have to -- def. annoying). Other than the warmth this phone completely rocks. I think I'll probably have to adjust because it's so damn amazing. I doubt any other phone can compare.
Name an Android phone as powerful as this one but which stays cooler... is there one?

Mine gets quite warm as well would sit around 32 degrees Celsius from browsing the Internet. I'm just worried if it's a defected device or not cause I have the exynos and some people don't even go over 25 degrees.
Yeah, I'm seeing this as well. Qualcomm variant. Just web-browsing for half an hour causes a pretty good bit of heat at the top of the phone, though I haven't checked the actual temperature.
I don't mind the heat itself, but the phone clearly start throttling and even just scrolling around in Chrome becomes laggy. Annoying.
A
lately mine has been ok surprisingly. not once did it even hit 90 today on lte all day. battery has also gotten a bit better. it's been a full week today since I got the phone, so who knows, maybe it really does take a week to settle which is kinda crazy lol

Is anyone getting 45% battery temperature!? I checked after unplugging from fast charging and using camera for a couple of minutes.

Any Overheating issues?

OK now im starting to worry a little about my choice as I am starting to see this popping up with people. Has anyone here had any issues like these as im not seeing it discussed here

it doesnt sound good
No issues for me on my pixel 3xl. Then again, I don't use it whilst it's charging, however I've never felt it feel particularly hot on any occasion.
to be honest neither do i usually use the phone when charging goes on charge at night when im asleep, however if its a real issue then its still not good
I use it often while its charging and had none overheating
I noticed that too. Checked the temperature and it was 39°.. never had those problems on the 2XL. It's quite strage!
I think this could be solved by software anyway, o really hope Google gives a look into that. Anyway I tried getting into airplane mode and it did help a bit, it's useful if you can use that mode for a bit of course
I felt it get warm when mid charge, but that's usual for quick charging. I've never used it while charging, or had it get hot while in use.
Thanks for the feedback folks mine comes tomorrow hopefully so I'll let you know what mine is like
My Nexus 6P would get really warm when plugged in using Android Auto & Google Maps navigation. Nothing so hot that I was worried, but warmer than I expected. My Pixel 3XL barely gets warm under the same conditions. Pretty pleased considering the issues others have experienced.
I haven't experienced it with mine so far. Knock on wood.
Ive noticed the back of my pixel 3xl warm after leaving on charge stand. Only got the stand Friday. Assume it's normal?
had my phone for around 24hrs now and no overheating currently @micks_address I would say it may get a little warm when wireless charging as can happen when wired charging
Yeah. Mine overheats and shuts down while taking photos outdoors.
Maybe it's the new AI chip Google put into these phones.
Would Google admit the chip has a problem?
My keep overheating when I'm using Viber on video call and charging in same time, and become very hot in the time.

don't do it at the same time. charging with the stock charger will heat up the battery and when using an app to video call it will make it even hotter (SoC/CPU runs hotter) and then at 50°C batterytemp (don't know at which temp exactly) the phone will shutdown.

Question Fix for Overheating??

I have received my P6a yesterday..
And I can feel device getting warm with normal use like WhatsApp, Phone call & Instagram...
Can feel device getting warm even when I'm using Wi-Fi..
It starts heating(because it's more than just warm) when charging...
Any fix or suggestion is welcomed..

When my Pixel 4 XL overheated, it was usually because I was charging and playing games on it at the same time. If it gets hot, then I would reboot it or leave it powered off for a minute. Could that be the case here?
Also, this is a new phone and you just installed a bunch of apps. My guess is that Android is likely evaluating and learning your habits so that it can optimize your battery and other stuff -- so there's alot of internal processing going on causing it to warm up.
Also, if you live in a city where the weather is warm or hot, then that'll make your phone warm or hot as well. So far, my 6a hasn't stayed warm very long except when I was transferring over/installing all my apps ... and it hasn't gotten hot yet.
The phone does get very warm, but it is also the middle of summer and we just set everything up. Tensor is also known for running on the toasty side. Unless your phone is warning you about excessive heat, it is within normal parameters.
it runs definitely warmer than a pixel 4 doing the same stuff.
I have sensor genius installed so it's logging temp 24/7. please do the same and let's share the graphs.
Mine is running substantially cooler using LTE rather than 5g, hopefully this is fixed through software updates.
I also put mine in LTE mode and it's much cooler. 5G is a bit overkill for mobile stuff at least for me, I just turn it on when using hotspot.
Ok, finally experienced the heating issue just doing normal browsing on LTE. Battery temp got up to around 43c on a cool day with no sunlight.
After some searching I found that turning off adaptive connectivity helps. After turning that off, temps are much better. I was in an area with poor signal so that likely was a part of it, but something else to try.

Another option to try is Disable Adaptive Battery, Disable 5G(If not necessary)..
I wouldn't worry too much. I absolutely assassinated my Pixel 3a XL. It was always hot. For couple of years. Huge amounts of onscreen time. Leaving it under blankets while charging on accident etc etc... Thing was fine. Also, a battery is only $12 and these pixels the easiest phones to open if you do somehow end up with severely reduced battery life couple years down the road
It's more the insane battery drain that goes along with the heat then the heat itself.
May be a CPU usage app that tracks what's taking up so much processor power.
My issue went away once I turned off adaptive connectivity.

Same. As in my country there is no 5G yet, I've changed to LTE preferred and phone is not hot anymore and battery doesn't drain.
It'd maybe gimp the overall performance some but u could try under-clocking your CPUs with FKM or EXKM while u track down the issue. (that is, if your bootloader is unlocked...in which case u could use BBS to track battery usage)

Question Pixel 6a overheats only in first few weeks, or indefinitely?

Many complain that the Pixel 6a gets hot or overheats. I have also seen videos were people claim it's only in the beginning while the phone "learns" your usage habits and how to optimize itself accordingly. But later on it doesn't need to run all of its processes like in the beginning once it figured you out, so to speak. (The exception being when you record a 1080 video at 60 frames, which even later on can get problematic.)
Can Pixel 6a users chime in here and recount their experiences? Does the overheating last past the first few weeks after purchasing it?
Bonus question: are the signal issues some complain of widespread, or not?
-----
I really want to get this phone, but I hesitate due to these two issues.
I didn't have overheating issues since I bought the phone 3 months ago.

Yup
I have my 6a 2 weeks and I don't have any issues with overheating or bad signal.
Thanks.
Anyone else?
Overheating in the sense that it shuts down with a warning? No, never. But the phone does get annoyingly hot, especially when charging even if I'm not using it at all. That's the phone plus the weather in my country isn't helping. Phone regularly touches 40° according to battery guru, when charging can go up to 43°.
On WiFi things are very normal. Mobile data however is a very different animal. It you have poor signal especially expect this to get pretty hot. Like stated above though, not shut down hot just hotter than what I consider normal. 35-40c battery temps on stock with those conditions isn't unusual.
Initial setup for sure gets toasty as well.
For whatever reason (latest updates maybe?), I've noticed recently that not only does my 6a not overheat, but the battery consumption has dropped significantly. At my admittedly low level of active usage I can easily go two days and still be over 50%. I might try for three full days soon.
I dont have any problems with overhiting , i have phone about 30 days. Playing games recording at 4k no heat problems at all.
Damn bruh...another 'overheating' thread?
Yes. The 6a may get fairly warm in some specific use cases, but it doesn't actually overheat as in start throwin' out warning messages and start throttling or worse, crash/reboot that I've ever witnessed. Actually mine seems to run slightly 'less warm' since A13's beta 2 & 3...just before I flashed a custom kernel. A few things to consider besides differing usage scenarios. If you're using a case, it may not only hinder cooling a little but probably 'feels' less warm due to the insulating properties as well. I try to go with a minimalistic case...it may not provide a lotta cushion if dropped but I'm hoping the improved grip offsets that point. And ofc the thinner the skin to less it retains heat. I went with a grippy Spigen Liquid Air or something like that.
Above all, I keep in mind that the 6a has the same processor as the [email protected] P6 PRO and that also helps me to forgive n forget that it can get toasty at times...plus thst resulting Tensor 'grin-factor' tho...
...just my 2 centz ofc
If you're using mobile data or using the phone as a hotspot thing gets very warm.
Normally, I've only experienced the phone getting very warm when I'm playing a game and charging the phone at the same time. However, on a recent trip to a foreign country, my phone (and its camera) stopped working because it was hot outdoors (around 80°F) and I was outside for 30min or longer. My friends' iphones didn't overheat though.
I haven't experienced any signal problems.
Mine never overheats. Its just warm enough to be a hand warmer, but not enough to damage anything

...and it displayed an overheat popup warning? 'cuz it was 80F outside? I've been out with my 6a dozens of times in 80F+ weather and NEVER had my phone throw an overheat warning much less shutdown or lock up. You might have something wrong with ur phone if a warm day kills ur phone...js

No overheat warning. Phone felt very warm, froze up and apps would barely respond or it would keep on rebooting. Tried a few times to power off, wait a minute, and then power on to get that last photo, but didn't work. After I got out of the heat for a short time, phone went back to normal. Felt hotter like 95 degrees, but weather report said 80s.
Nothing wrong with my phone per se. My guess is that my phone was in direct sunlight for 30 min. I myself was dying from the heat. And before that, I was already taking pictures on and off for an hour (in the heat but not direct sunlight). I've used the phone before in hot weather without issue, but this time around, it was continued use and in direct sunlight.
My 6a definitely overheats and shuts down sometimes without warning. This has happened numerous times even when the phone is having light use (chrome or connected to android auto). I would say there are 2 factors. When the outside temperature is hot (35c or hotter - which currently in Australia is a daily occurance) and when the signal is not strong (also a very common occurrance here) - when this happens the phone can overheat and shutdown within minutes even with little use.
From my exp. signal strength seems to be the biggest issue. The pixel seems to literally burn through the power when signal is weak and get hot.
Generally I have had a 50% chance of getting a 'Your phone is hot' warning - other times it just turns off.

You should RMA the phone. Sounds like a faulty device to me.
Also, just hot ambient temp does nothing to a phone. If it gets direct sunlight, thats unsafe for the device because of how hot it can get (if you measure temp in your car, it gets up to 60-70C+ easily.) If I use my car in hot sun, I aim an AC vent to its back and then the phone is super chill all through the ride.

Yes, I think I will RMA it. - I don't agree re ambient temp. My phone certainly seems to shut down more often when the ambient is hotter. Also, re the car. I had the phone in the glove box which is separately cooled to 21c and even then it would overheat, - I suspect related to poor signal. But yes - will RMA it.
Try safe mode first. You may have an app which is misbehaving. I've never had my 6a overheat, it will sometimes get a bit warm when charging, but that's it.
