Still a Dev Phone? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

So, I was wondering if the Pixel or Pixel XL will have root and is their source code going to be available for everyone? I really want to buy this phone to play with the source.

Yes, so long as you purchase the google direct version you can root, BL unlock, etc. The source will eventually be released.

Why does not samsung release their exynos source on the internet?

Why does not samsung release their exynos source on the internet? or release a flashable aosp rom or something like that rather than making a new phone with different number and has aosp just like they used to do in the past (Google play edition) why don't they just release an aosp rom and you can flash it yourself? xiaomi did it not with aosp but with windows 10 they released a flashable windows 10 rom
if i am paying $700 for the device i should have full control of it
i am going to get HTC 10 since it has SD820 and it's UI is similar to stock anyway

Yeah, I wrote sorry, didn't I? But it could be worse. Having a locked bootloader and source code...
It's not something they need to do, and I'm guessing they didn't sell enough Google Play Edition phones to make it worth their while.

Yeah, feeling so sorry for the SD820 guys in the US But at least they have Samsung Pay...
Back to topic.
This is a general problem with exynos?
Are there other popular phones with exynos (samsung or others) where the kernel source was released?
How is the release strategy for kernel sources at samsung? Are they otherwise fast?
This is typical for Exynos-powered devices.

no custom oreo rom

Coming from the Nexus 5x and there are many Oreo roms..so i was wondering why there ist noch Oreo Rom for the Pixel..? And dont get me wrong..i have no problem with that..Just wonderering
With Kind regards
Ah..OK..after some reading..the first step is not really good finished yet..custom Recovery and root.
Wow..never was thinking that root and other stuff will be so complicated as on an iPhone to get it Jailbreaked
Are we in the point that google want that we just use our phones..?
Then we dont need sources and others...
..sorry..but i must write it down here..and hope to get some answers..
.. because the way to get all things done..from the HTC desire (bravo with Android 1-2) till the Nexus 5x and Samsung s6 was always the same..and now this..
I have for sure some Experience to look behind some curtain..but atm i am a bit frustrated
Root is no problem, fastboot boot to TWRP and install it.
This phone is much more challenging than other handsets due to the fact Google has implemented dual booting partitions. It also seems they aren't as interested in the developer community now that they are making their own phones and not just putting out an OS for Android. So, this handset isn't as friendly for devs, except for those who are really into masochistic behavior (self punishment). If you're looking for a really robust developer community you probably should stick to Samsung or a few other manufacturers and avoid Google for the foreseeable future.
Just my thoughts.
Really unbelievable that there are no ROMs due to those issues.
Will sell my Pixel and keep my Nexus 6P
I'm thinking of selling my pixel and getting a oneplus 5, or waiting to see how the modding scene evolves for the razor phone.
Truly disappointed the pixel line didn't follow on from nexus devices.
I will do so.
Got my pixel used and defective, Google will replace it for free so I will be able to sell it as new.
Would it be possible to install substratum and xposed framework?
Thought of getting nexus 6p,but bought the pixel thinking that it would get more development..
now I'm regretting that decision..?
I would of thought there would be possibly some way of reformatting the partition size or even changing partitions completely

for that ..S-off is needed..but a great idea through
Really funny how things have changed. It wasn't that long ago that if you wanted a phone that was easy to root, and had tons of developers, with tons of ROM options, you got a Nexus. Now that the Pixels are here, it's just the opposite.
The only saving grace is Google will continue supporting the pixel until October 2019 so I'm not going to be stranded with a phone I can't update.
Got the XL as a warranty replacement for my almost 2 year old 6P that had battery dying issues.
I do like the XL, have it rooted with Magisk, just waiting for Pure Nexus. If revo gets Xposed working Oreo, may not go custom rom at all.
Not many things the phone can't do that requires custom
bootloader unlock and custom kernel if required for some tweaks, however
pure android is actually freaking lovely
is any other device on oreo? let alone 8.1 (if you have beta)

Quite a few devices are getting both official and unofficial 8.0 updates. As far as 8.1 I'm pretty sure it's still in beta so it's only available for the Google family of devices as there is no way to look into the source of the beta and try to compile it for other phones.
There are more issues than the A/B partition scheme that these phones have:
1) They are extremely expensive so there were not too many people who bought them in the first place
2) There are a lot of people and devs who have sold their Pixels for Pixel 2's
3) Project Treble which sounded like a good idea has actually caused more problems for this phone for custom development, which did not affect any Nexus models. All the kinks related to this need to be worked out too as it is a new issue as of Oreo
You will see some rom action in the foreseeable future though

How would you rate the Pixel against the Nexus 6P?
Is it worth the upgrade?
I got a broken 6P for 80€ and a broken Pixel for 180€
Both were replaced (Nexus against Nexus, cause it was bought from 3rd party and not Google).
Nexus would sell for 250€, Pixel for 400€

I miss my 6P, thought it was an awesome phone but the battery issue SOT of 2 hours after 2 years was killing me. Got the XL as a warranty replacement for virtually nothing, so it was a win-win.
Once the custom roms roll out, it will rival or exceed the 6P, I have no doubt.

Purchase the Oreo or Nougat version?

Not sure if this is the place to ask but if I buy the Nougat version do I still get the Oreo version for free or do I needa buy it, if so should I just wait for the Oreo version to come out.
You need to buy both versions since the devs are ditching Sungstratum for Andromeda. You better hurry too because the Andromeda app is only on sale for 3 more days. Good luck figuring out a way to install it if you're on Nougat because Play Store won't allow you to install it on an incompatible device that's running anything lower than Oreo. Unfair? Talk to the devs about it. This was their bright idea.

Sungstratum is only for Nougat, Andromeda is a completely different app and will have to be purchased separately so the decision is up to you which one you want to purchase. Sungstratum isn't being abandoned, it will still be updated for our nougat users, but there are too many changes in Oreo for it to work there.
No, they are two different products.

Bootloader Unlock

The Nokia 7 Plus is a perfect midrange premium device and supports Treble too but what bothers me is the lack of an official bootloader unlock method. From Nokia's past actions its very difficult to guess what Nokia will offer in 2018, at first this phone excited me but the past events disappointed again. Hope Nokia atleast offers official bootloader unlock method, if not kernel sources, then also we'll be able to flash a GSI on it
isn't nokia obliged to have the bootloader of this device unlockable, considering it has an android one monicker? i expected this phone to support the bootloader unlocking via fastboot just like the google phones.

xactly man........pointed out the right thing, I missed it...... @phhusson as we were discussing about the nokia devices, they might be unlockable like the Mi A1 and other android One devices
That's what I'm counting on. So far Nokia was throwing me off because they don't allow to unlock bootloader despite saying months ago they acknowledge community is requesting it and that they will discuss it whit their dev team (that was one of Nokia marketing guys)
Xiaomi had to allow regular bootloader unlock through fastboot command like Nexus and Pixel (without asking Xiaomi for permission and waiting 2 weeks till they grant it to you like with all regular Xiaomi devices)
My hope is that Nokia 7 plus will have to work the same way being Android One phone.
One thing I noticed is it has its own Nokia camera app the same way MiA1 has Xiaomi Camera app. Hoping that with unlocked bootloader, rooted, there will be no problem using moded Google Camera app. Or maybe Nokia camera app will be so good there will be no point bothering with Google Camera app, maybe for portrait mode.

If the Nokia camera app turns out to be good enough, someone on XDA will port it to other devices too.

Same here......I've also kept these 2 phones in my shortlist, Nokia 7+ or G6 Plus
inside china google cannot enforce their will on the oem, hence nokia has to bend to somebody else's wishes. but i think outside of china, google will enforce its requirements on android one phones. so i have high expectations that this device will have unlockable bootloader. let's see......

Android one devices have the option by default to enable OEM UNLOCK in developers settings so I guess inside China also the device will have this option to get the bootloader unlocked

Yeah, i think the same way. Nokia 7+ and 8 Scirocco are my number one choice for this year so far, but i checked the other Nokia`s phones forums here and this locked bootloader ruins it all. I like to root and customize my phone (even if it comes with a pure android) but with a locked bootloader it`s complicated.
Hope the 2018 releases get unlocked. If not i`ll have to look for other alternatives...

When will The oneplus 6 receive Android P stable version

I've searched for this everywhere.. but haven't find an answer.
What will happen to the oneplus 6 and the other unpixel devices that support P beta, when the development ends and google releases the public version ?
Will it be instantly updated alongside the pixel devices ?
isnt the whole purpose of treble to make the updates easily available, the rest is up to manufacturers
Android P will be in Beta till the Pixel 3 is released - normally November.
One would assume that a stable kernel and OS will be available for OnePlus to use around that time (maybe as late as Jan 2019 depending on OnePlus's resources). Be patient. If you are apart of the P beta program then get used to the issues associated with beta software

No, it's supposed to get it much quicker then other OEMs if a phone is part of Project Treble. The Google Pixel phones will ALWAYS be the first to get it as it's made for the Pixel line... the OEMs like OnePlus will get it sonner then most and it's just much easier to get it to the phones. So expect it roughly a month or so maybe 2 after it's released on the Pixel line.
Become a developer and write yourself a working Android P if you don't want to wait

What?? Why would it not be official until the pixel 3 launch???
Android P will probably be released in August like Android Oreo, and it will probably be official in August/September
Lol. People will never be happy... Whaaaa? No official P at the same time with Pixel 3? Feel blessed that you have Project Treble. Before Treble, OEMs was getting source code only after the final version was released. That was the point when OEMs could start working on their betas. Or to put it on other words: first betas late November (in the best scenario) and final release February, March. Now we have betas in May-June and people are still crying lol.

You asking question about when the beta will be released won't make the update come fast. You'll know when the update will be released. Till then keep researching.

I understand perfectly... Google will never allow another device to have the newest Android version before the pixel line and once it's out on the pixels, they will release it to the other pens when they choose, which likely will be a bit after it's on the pixels for a bit. It's just the way it is, treble or not.
what's the rush anyway?? it's a freaking phone not your life support system... smh

100% agree with this! If you want the latest and greatest first, then Pixel phones are the best options. For me, the latest security updates are the most important thing - any phone manufacturer that doesn't release these on time is dead to me (Huawei is the worst).. I think what OnePlus is doing is better than the average, so if you don't like it, move along..

It's available as a beta.. they're already in the process of customizing it... And that's a first for android and google.. and that's why in my opinion it should be available for the beta supported devices much faster than previous iterations, I Mean..... What's the point of the beta then ?
