Cyanogenmod for Honor 8? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Does anyone know or have any insights about whether Cyanogenmod ROM will be available in the near future for Honor 8 or not? I'm really looking forward to see an AOSP ROM for this devices

It's not the same. From my experience with Kirin platforms, AOSP is easier to get working (since EMUI is based on it).
About the 'near future', no idea, if you want me to talk from my experience, I've been sending Huawei emails since December and I am still waiting lol.
Relax, explore the device, try not to scratch it and wait for the roms.

According to @svetius Huawei is close to releasing the kernel code. It's not everything needed for CM13, but it's a place to start. I'm hoping they are going to provide more than just the kernel, and they provide a device tree and vendor proprietary files as well. I know I'll be trying my hand at building cm13 as the source files are released.

Is there even a difference? Try to find a difference between the FRD-L09 kernel and the FRD-L04 one.
And no, it won't speed up rom development or whatever, we've discussed about that countless times.

Not sure what parts of EMUI is giving you pain, but if it's just the UI you could just change to Nova Launcher or another Launcher for now. I've been using Nova-Launcher since the moment I got it and I think it works great.

Keep faith, but don't hope for too much....

Does this phone really need cm? I don't personally like emui but the phone is such a powerhouse that I can live with it. Plus I use my phone for aleast three weeks as the manufacturer intended. And I'm leaning more on it than past emui software...

Can I remove EMUI on the Honor 8?

So I am looking to get a honor 8, but there is one thing that I am not so sure about, EMUI. So first of all, what are your thoughts on it, is it just a re skin of stock android or are there limitations/advantages. I am coming from IOS, and like the look of it, which i know emui is somewhat similar looking. Can I remove EMUI and go with a more stock version of android? If not what are some things I should do to get around the limitations of it? Also, can update to Nougat? Thanks!
There are more number of inbuilt features in EMUI than stock ROM. Some of the apps are inbuilt with the it. Stock ROM doesn't have every utility app that needs in day to day life like file manager, call recorder. We can download the app in play store in it. EMUI has these apps built with itself. So no need to download external app.
Limitations for EMUI is the RAM management. Im not sure about Honor 8, but RAM management is major issue in EMUI in all other models. It might be fixed soon with the upcoming updates also.
Regarding the update, you will get update till Android O for sure. But the time taken to get the update will be more than that of stock android devices. So don't worry about updates if you have the patience for it.
As of now you can't remove EMUI , as custom ROM is not available.

No other custom ROM available yet, the answer is NO for now...
But u can change Launcher if u dont like EMUI style.

Removal of the current EMUI will void the warranty. Please be aware of this and makes changes to your device at your own digression. (NS)
Alright thanks everyone for your reply, ill just probably customize the ui with different launcher and stuff and I should be fine with it.

There is a thread mentioning that many developers already tried and left their projects because of the difficulties.

We will still get many modded custom Roms but as for custom Roms like CyanogenMod etc, it appears that it's a monumental task because of honor 8 being a Kirin device.
I don't understand the actual nuances, just stating what I usually read.

Lineage 14.1 for Honor 6X

Hi! I haven´t got many experience as a developer. I took some time and tried to port Lineage 14.1 to Honor 6X. I don´t know if rom works or even boots and it would be nice if someone can test it!
REMEMBER: This is only a test build and it wasnt tested before so flash the Rom only if you did full reset insturctions and did a FULL TWRP Backup before.
I AM NOT RESPONSABLE FOR ANY DAMAGE OR BRICK OF YOUR DEVICE WHILE FLASHING THIS TEST BUILD ON YOUR DEVICE. YOU DECIDE IT ON YOUR OWN AND MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER IF THE DEVS TEST THIS BEFORE. TEST ROM ONLY IF YOU KNOW TO RESTORE SYSTEM.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/chs2200tyayol1b/lineage-14.1-20170708-UNOFFICIAL-berlin.zip
It would be great to have some details like the source, credits, instructions, which kernel is it using... Also knowing if it works before posting it would have been a plus.
downloading. going to test tomorrow if boots.
If the mods sees this, this thread is gonna be closed.

i download the zip, and without flashing i know that will never work. Like felix, has unzip rom zip file, and rezip into a "los14" folder ...
i have unzip the rom, re zip without the "los14" folder. Twrp 3.0.x give me an error 7. try later with Twrp 3.1.1.
Edit: ro.cm.version=14.1-20170531-UNOFFICIAL-eva ?

There's nothing changed for oreo on the source, we automatically created 8.0 branches for all our repos independent of Oreo support for the devices.

This hack/mod requires modifying and resizing the partition scheme of the phone - it was easy on the mi5 if I remember correctly because there was a partition that went unused if you weren't on MIUI. I think a while ago I also saw that someone was going to publish a guide on how to resize OPO partitions.
TL;DR: Not an easy task - yet probably possible with the devs we've got around here.

For bacon, it isn't necessary to repartition, we can still repurpose a partition for vendor. Let's just say that it's doable, but too much work for now. Even if we get treble it isn't very practical, given we have a 32 bit device.

Oh, there definitely will be.
any good news?
Android 9 works well via LineageOS. There still is no Android 10 support but from what I have seen, LineageOS on Android 10 is very buggy. As long as LenageOS continues to support OnePlus 1, I will be happy. I guess it would be much easier if we had Treble though as new versions of Android should just "work".

Oreo security patches?

It looks like Huawei/Honor continues the development of security patches for EMUI 5 - b410 is approved by IMEI and contains August patches, while b412 contains September patches and will probably be approved soon. However, nothing new on the EMUI 8 side of things.
I don't remember how things were with the EMUI 4->5 transition, but the fact that they continue to focus on providing updates only for the old emui doesn't fill me with confidence.
Was 8.0.0.521 an one-off? I hope not.
I think Oreo is an one-off. Infact i returned back to b407
It's really disappointing, because the B521 firnware has some annoying bugs.
To me, the fact that Huawei controls both processor (Kirin) and OS (EMUI), should mean that they would be of the likes of Apple and iOS, or the likes of Google and Pixels: each version of EMUI should be able to be installed on all compatible phones, on launch day. I can't believe they cannot do that, unless their developers' skills are so bad.
This is a lost opportunity, in favour clearly of selling more phones. They envision being better than Apple, without taking the first page of their book: fewer phones, better support.
If that's the case in the end, "so long and thanks for all the fish".
