Screen quality (physical not technical) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Dis

I've been reading a lot about scratched screens right out of the box, and seeing that the screen scratches very easily just laying it on the table.
Now I've only been following this on the s7e forums do don't know about the regular s7, but I'd this a quality control issue? I've ashtrays been under the impression that gorilla glass was supposed to be highly scratch resistant and harder to crack.
After having cracked my screen after a short drop 24 hours into having the phone, and the only phone screen to have broken of the myriad galaxy, lg and iPhones I've owned, I'm wondering if there was a failure I the quality control of the screens produced for the first batches of s7's.
Was this a problem with the s6 edge? Where it'd be a byproduct of the curved screen? Our has gorilla glass just fallen off?

Nexus S Glass...as good as Samsung Intercept?

I have had a Samsung Intercept from Virgin Mobile for about 3-4 months. I have no screen protection on it, have had it in my pocket with keys, cleaned it with normal cloths and shirt, and the screen has yet to get one scratch on it. My Nexus S will be arriving tomorrow... Is the glass on it the same or will I need to protect it?
It is not the same glass used in the Intercept. I believe the Intercept uses Gorilla Glass, while the Nexus S uses regular glass for some reason. It'll probably be as good as Gorilla Glass as long as you aren't keeping it in your toolbox
I'd be more worried about the battery cover scratching.
I don't know Samsung Intercept, but Nexus S does not use Gorilla Glass screen. So it can be easily scratched with a single fingernail move. My Nexus S scratched in its 4th day.
I also have got a HTC HD2 which has a GorillaGlass screen. I've been using it for 8 months and screen is still perfect like its first day.
So take care of your Nexus S.
Word on the street is that Samsung avoided using the Gorilla glass because Corning (makers of Gorilla Glass) would not guarantee the glass strength of the curved shape of the NS...
Plain laminated glass with an oleophobic coating was used, resulting in a screen thats pretty easily scratched . Within the first 10 minutes of receiving my NS, I lightly scratched my NS screen while cleaning it with a soft cloth, to install a screen protector on it (FFS!)
There are some people experiencing defects in the oleophobic (oil resistant) coating on it after a few days of use too.
So.. in a nut shell - GET a protector on it!
I will say this, my phone survived a fall from about 6 feet and not a scratch or crack in the glass. Long story short, don't use your phone as a level, use a real level when hanging stuff on walls.
Intercepts don't use Gorilla Glass nor does the Nexus S, but the Intercept is also a lower mid range phone that can sort of take a beating. Mine won't charge while on any longer because of an infant and general use, but yes you should always use a screen protector.

[Q] Does the N5 screen scratch easily?

I remember when I got my Galaxy Nexus and kept it unprotected in my pocket, it developed some nasty scratches in the coating on the screen. It was very sensitive to even pocket lint. When I got a warranty replacement the first thing I did was take it directly to get a screen protector. On the other hand my Nexus One and HTC Panache never scratched after months bare in the pocket.
Any thoughts on whether the N5 screen is "safe" in a pocket unprotected?
Curious about this also although there's certainly no way to tell. Its got Gorilla Glass 3 on if you care about a name.
I can say this, my Nexus 7 screen has taken a helluva beating, between dropping remote controls, PlayStation controllers and my HTC one (metal down), it doesn't have a scratch on it.

The Nexus 5 has a Gorilla Glass 3 screen, while the Galaxy Nexus used some sort of "fortified glass" from an un-named manufacturer to perhaps save costs. I would expect the Nexus 5 to be a little more scratch-resistant as a result, but obviously that doesn't mean you can't or won't get scratches.
You have to decide for yourself whether or not a screen-protector is worth it. I have tended to go with one for the extra peace-of-mind, but it isn't without trade-offs, because I do find interacting with the touchscreen is nicer when it is stock.

Excellent response. +1
Gorilla glass 3 should definitely make for a pretty scratch resistant screen, but sand will still scratch it(hardness 7) . As well as diamond (hardness 10) . Anything with a hardness factor of 6 or higher I believe. All common metals won't scratch the screen at all so that's nothing to worry about. I don't use a screen protector on my One and it has only 2 tiny scratches you can only see when shining a bright light over the spot. If keeping the screen perfect is that important you should get a glass screen protector. Spigen's actually has a hardness factor of 7 or 8 I believe which is real impressive.

Yeah, I was just shocked after the resilience of the N1 and Panache (MyTouch 4G) screens that something as simple as pocket lint could so terribly scar the GNex screen. So I would hope for better.
I do like that cool touch of glass on warm fingers.
My HTC One X has "Corning Gorilla Glass 2" and got a big fat scratch.
My Phone will arrive on Monday and first thing to do is applying a screen protector
OK well it's not as blatant as on the GNex, but in the glare of bright direct light I can see very tiny surface scratches, presumably from little pocket lint abrasions.
In any case I just initiated a warranty swap for dead pixels. I have never heard of Google rejecting a warranty swap for minuscule wear-and-tear imperfections. So I will take my chances with the swap and bring the new one to my trusty local applicator to get a protector applied.

S6's gorilla glass 4 - is it really shatter proof?

A Note 4 owner (love the Note 4) looking to switch to the S6 next month when it comes out due to the smaller size.
Question - I noticed in the hands-on videos of the S6 from MWC that the metal rim extends a bit above the glass panel to absorb impact, and it's gorilla glass 4.
So - does this truly make the phone shatter proof? Can I use it without a case and not worry about shattering the screen if it falls out of my pocket (my Nexus 6 shattered from 2 feet).
No screen is "shatter proof" in a cell phone. You could have gorilla glass 10, and if your phone lands the "right" way, it will break.

AFAIK, Gorilla Glass 4 is as strong as Gorilla Glass 3 but in a thinner form. And Gorilla Glass 3 is definitely not shatter proof.

I looked this up too. Here:
"A piece of Gorilla Glass 4 can offer the same damage resistance as a thicker piece of Gorilla Glass 3, so manufacturers like Apple could make their smartphones’ screens 20% to 25% thinner than with Gorilla Glass 3 if they wanted to “settle” with the same damage resistance levels of Gorilla Glass 3."
Seems to imply that manufacturers have a choice - they can thin down the gorilla glass 4 panel and offer the same protection as gorilla glass 3, or they can use a 'standard' thickness gorilla glass 4 panel and offer better impact protection than earlier. Wonder what approach went into the S6 panel.

All glass will shatter in the proper conditions. The S6 will be no exception. I say this will make having a case all the more important. I imagine back panels won't be terribly expensive, but the screen will be $$$. Good luck removing the front glass without damaging the LCD panel. I know it's been done on the S3 and up, but the thought of heating up the phone enough to soften the adhesive, while not damaging the other phone components, scares me.

Survives 80% of the time and is 2x better than competition.
no phone is. i will say if it is anything like the xperia phone it will be a good thing.

the impressive thing about this phone is it's the closet to the S6, both have glass on front and back. the big difference is the xperia uses DragonTail glass and not gorilla at least on the Z2 from what i gather..
Only option to prevent the horror scenario - glass shattering - is to put an UAG or Otterbox case on it and protect the screen with tempered glass. Like Dandroid and others have said you could have Gorilla Glass 25 if the phone is landing on the right spot face first it will shatter no matter what.

I think you guys are all missing the point of the question. I didn't ask if Gorilla Glass 4 guarantees that the phone will never break. I was merely wondering about it's improved strength and its benefits in everyday scenarios. In hindsight, maybe I should worded it as "shatter resistant" instead of "shatter proof"
And no, some of us don't want to turn our already big phones into clunky laptops or VCRs by putting a hideously huge case on it. Which is precisely why the industry is investing in shatter resistant technology to start with.

Then live with the consequences I doubt you'll ever see full shatter-proof glass on a phone
i want to know if the screen is using the anti reflective coating like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05UFlwnbtfE
The screen on my Note 4 is supposedly Gorilla Glass 4 and I still managed to crack it.
bull****!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...s/samsung-view-case-scratched-screen-t3107467
no, it's not shatter proof, it's more of scratch proof, these screens are built to wishstand a static pressure, which means something that moves on the screen it self, like trying to scratch it, shatter proof means it has to take a dynamic pressure, like dropping or hitting with a hammer or things like that, you can't have both worlds at least in glass...so they focus more on the scratching thing....
We've all seen the drop tests and no doubt dropped their phones without cases from time to time too. I haven't broken a screen by dropping a naked phone since before the original Xperia Z. The S6 glass is pretty resistant to shattering but best to use a screen protector and take the hit on that instead of the screen.
Just love my s6 being naked since I bought it .. I don't care about shattered or not.. they have spent billion of dollars for R&D to development such technology.. so why can't we just enjoy it as it's out of the box... otherwise nothing left forever guys...

Screen Protector

I use a screen protector on all my previous phones. For the S6, I'm thinking of not using one. It's going to be in my pocket along with a case. How scratch resistant is the screen?
I'm not sure. Mine already has one right down the middle. I never had one worth my S4
How did you get it scratched?
I also got some minor scratches, put my phone in the same pocket my lighter was in :/ never doing that again lol
I bought a tempered glass one for mine... And just so you know the edge doesn't stick right.
It has to do with the screen being beveled. So just keep in mind that 1 or 2 mm of the edge will always look bad. I'm thinking about taking it off.
(s6, not s6 edge)
I used a screen protector up until about a year into my S4 and took it off. I got tired of the finger drag, rainbow, and scratches it accumulated. My S4 ended up with a minor scratch that could only be seen in a certain light if you knew it was there. My S6 has the same now, almost in the same place and in extreme sunlight, at a crrtain angle, I can see a few spiderweb looking scratches. Gorilla Glass is far from scratch proof, but I'd rather enjoy the feel of the glass. Glass screen protectors get scratched as well. I put one on my son's S6, the Verizon protector installed by them, and it does not reach the sides of the screen, which annoys him. I figure if my screen gets badly scratched, I'll put a protector on at that point.

Get an s view case best of all worlds the joys of naked screen with the true anti shatter protection that only a flip case can provide, the Samsung s view case is excellent.
I'm using Spigen crystal screen protectors. They're normal ones, not glass, but they're excellent. You get 2 Front, and 1 back, and they are quite good on smudges, perfect clarity, and they have no halo or issues attaching to screen. Quite cheap at £6.
As for S-view cases, they don't offer the protection people think. I've seen many a Samsung phone shatter in them.

Gorilla Glass Victus - Bad Micro Scratching

I have had my Note 20 Ultra now for about 3 weeks and out of every Gorilla Glass phone I have owned this has to be the worst when it comes to micro scratches on the display. Every time I clean the screen I look and see about 10-20 more minute scratches on all parts of the screen. And while they aren't visible when the screen is on it is just disappointing that this phone which is supposed to have the toughest glass ever appears to be softer than previous generations.
Just for some background I have owned every generation of Samsung Android phones in either the S or Note variant. I never use screen protectors because even the best ones effect touch sensitivity and refract light differently never allowing you to enjoy the full beauty of Samsung's panels. I always keep a very protective case on the phone, currently the UAG Monarch, to protect the rest of the phone from scratches and more importantly damage from drops. Usually over the course of a year I wind up with a fair share of micro scratches on the screen which typically doesn't bother me at all and I accept as the cost of not protecting the screen.
I have no plans to protect the screen for the reasons I mentioned above and would still choose, even if it was new again, to go without protection. I just wanted to know if any of you were experiencing the same issue I am.
I'm experiencing an opposite reaction. Got my note 20 Ultra on release day, it's display seems to be more resilient to micro scratches than the previous Note 10 + that I owned

No scratches here either. Though I do baby the phone more than the average person.
Mine came with the Samsung pre installed protector and I dare not remove it.
As JerryRiggEveryrhing says " glass is glass"
I always apply the Whitestone Dome Glass Screen Protector after removing the factory fitted one as I'd always be drawn to such scratches.
Speaking of JerryRigEverything I just went and watched his videos side by side of the Note 20 Ultra and Note 10+ and to my eye it looks like the screen does in fact scratch worse on the Note 20 Ultra. The level 6 scratches on the Note 20 Ultra look more like the level 7 scratches on the Note 10+. The level 6 scratches on the Note 10+ look a lot shallower and less noticeable.
Either way it's fine I buy my phones to use them not baby them I'm just a little let down by it. To anyone who cares a lot definitely get yourself a protector because it won't take long before you will start to notice them.
Edit - The Note 10+ picture is on the left, Note 20 Ultra on the right. It was hard to get good screenshots but feel free to watch both yourself.
Note 10+
Note 20 Ultra
What kind of screen protector are you using that affects touch sensitivity and has a visible effect on image quality? I NEVER have those issues with screen protectors.
I put the Ringke dual easy due to unknown scratch resistance of the Victus glass. It looks crap in sunlight but at least it gives a little peace of mind

Just about every combination of film or glass protectors that are available. For a while I really tried to find one I liked but would still wind up ripping it off in a week. Glass protectors always refract light weird and just don't have an OEM feel when using the phone. Whitestone dome came the closest but fingerprint sensor never worked right, even with relearning after applying. I really tried to like it especially after spending $60 on it but, like the rest, it wound up in the trash. I eventually gave up and just decided to go naked and have never turned back.

Weird. Whitestone and similar thick screen protectors affected the FP sensor for me, but turning up screen sensitivity eliminated any affect on the touch. I've never been able to discern any visible differences in image quality, but I couldn't handle the affect on the FP sensor.
I've since switched to Ringke Easy Dual screen protectors. They're a film, and you'd never know it was there.
Sand will scratch all these screens... easily.
It will get marred sooner then latter.
Any screen protector also decrease the chance of breakage by impact as well.
I've noticed my urethane protector is hard to scratch but after 3 months... time for another $5 makeover.
I kept the one already installed that came from and yes is very easily scratched but at least it works with the finger print sensor and it's free, and keeps me from the hassle of installing a new one that I can't guarantee that it won't screw the FP sensor.
