Had the opportunity to try an AT&T S7 - I have the Edge from Verizon (impressions)
First of all, I am not sure if it is Verizon, or just the Edge in general, but the S7 from AT&T is exponentially faster than the edge. Everything from unlocking the phone with your fingerprint, to web browsing. Heck, even Facebook loads faster and scrolls more smoothly.
My question is - is this an AT&T thing or an S7 thing? Reason I am asking is because I am switching to AT&T, and I have an edge on order there. I don't want that phone if it is going to be slower than the S7 they are letting me use in the meantime.
Is Verizon the issue?
Edge?
Thanks!

I think maybe your mind is playing tricks on you. Its not faster, if any difference I doubt you would be able to tell the difference anyway.

Even the Verizon rep noticed it. Unlocking the phone took twice as long even after a factor reset. I am thinking it was a defective phone though.

Were you using your phone that was fully setup with a bunch of apps versus a barebones demo ATT model?

My phone S7 (full setup with lots of apps) is faster than the fresh out of the box Verizon S7 edge that I had. It was not a demo model, it was the phone I returned to Verizon.

I was very likely defective. I've played with both myself (real phones, not in store) and they are the same.

There is something up with the Edge. At least the Verizon version. I have a work Edge for Verizon and a s7 for T-Mobile and it is so much faster. I've made them almost identical in what apps are installed. I did a speed test with the same apps that Phonebuff uses on youtube. The normal s7 finished a minute faster then the edge. It kept apps open while the edge closed them. Also opens apps slightly faster too. My Note 5 finished faster then the edge as well.

I am suprised the cops weren't called!
On another note, the ATT g7's might be on a newer build. I think they are on PC2..? TMO is on the most recent build of PC8 and that has the best performance of all. Sprint and Verizon are back the earliest build of PB5. Wonder if CDMA has anything to do with why Sprint and Verizon are still on PB5? I dunno?

LOL.. comparing it with a AT&T device? Aren't Verizon and AT&T like the evil twins? Slow ass updates and expensive monthly plans. Both has tons of crapware too. (I've been a long time AT&T user, and I got a Verizon S7 now.)

Tmo is the carrier to switch to! Vzw has a great signal though...

yea why use a carrier with great signal strength and coverage....

is this unlockable for Tmobile **urgent**

My brother is about to buy this phone from one of his buddies for a cheap amount, is this phone unlockable for TMOBILE? I already have a Samsung Vibrant T959 (tmo version of SGS)
You mean the captivate? Yes, but you won't get 3g, just edge.
Check power button and rear speaker function. They arebig problems for some Captivates.
Not to be snob, but a quick search on "unlock captivate" would give you the required results.
And to make long answer short, yes but you need to be rooted. The app by Helroz works like a charm.

Sorry. I actually did do a search on the captivate forums of "unlock tmobile" and then i went on google to try to search but most of the links didn't work, some said it costs like 35$ and I found one youtube video which helps.
I just wanted a confirmation, thank you both.
Just making sure, One click root or Super One click root also works for captivate? (i'm going to go read the stickies now , I'm not a noob trust me i'm on ICS on my Vibrant hah, just a new device, so i thought maybe the instructions etc were different?)
thanks again guys.
Super one click, yes. Sgs Unlock by Helroz, yes. And don't lose the file that is created by the unlock app. It has the info you will need to lock the phone ,if you ever have a need to.
Don't forget the thanks button
been using it on Tmo for quite some time. It works flawlessly but as someone said already, it is just Edge. No 3g. That and no official updates. With the ROMs available here, who needs official update anyways? The rooting would void your warranty
Sorry to revive this thread, but Im going to I-Wireless (T-Mobile affiliate) from Sprint, and me and my wife just bought a pair of Captives off of XDA here. Do you think I will notice a big difference in speed going from Sprint's 3G service to T-Mobiles Edge? Sprint 3G is kind of spotty here anyhow, so Im mostly on 1G whenever in a building or house. Is Edge comparable to Sprint's 1G service, or better? Im hoping its better, as the Sprint 1G service is very slow!

Edge is 2g...so theoretically it should be about twice as fast as 1g.
I just switched my Captivate to Edge and it's about as fast as my Sprint 3g was during the day.

Sprint phone recommendation

I currently use a MyTouch3g with Cyanogenmod 6.2, and I'm wanting to get a new phone. 6.2 on the MT is really sluggish and often runs out of memory (I have a bunch of apps that crash to desktop upon launch, unless I run them right after rebooting). I'm going to be switching from AT&T to Sprint, so myself and my fiance have our cellphones under the same plan. Now, from the looks of things, a lot of the phones that Sprint recently had, like the Evo 4g, and Evo 3d, have been dropped (at least from the website, but scuttlebutt I've read is that they may still be found in stores). I'm wanting to keep with HTC if possible, and something supported by Cyanogenmod. Those aren't hard and fast, but just things I would like. Is there any recommendations?
Of the ones on the Sprint Website, the Samsung Conquer seems like it would fit the bill for usage (stock android interface, rootable, affordable), but it seems like there is no custom roms for it currently.

I (W)ouldn't switch to Sprint, (T)hey whore out their network. IMO TMobile is better than Sprint, but i(F) you do not have good signal for TMO (although they have wifi calling for areas with bad signal) you might as well use Boost or Virgin who are on Sprint's network. But I guess you were already on TMO at some point if you have a MyTouch
My fiance has sprint, and is currently mid contract with them. She also doesn't have any issues with them. My contract with AT&T has expired, I'm having problems with my phone, and with my service (Texts to and from me never arriving, or getting messages and voicemail long after they were sent). My fiance hasn't had any issues with Sprint's service, just with her phone (Optimus S) and only after the gingerbread upgrade. My friends with Sprint are in the same boat with her, good service. A friend of mine has Tmobile currently and he frequently has issues where his phone will drop him from 4G down to 2G (totally bypassing 3G), even while sitting docked at his desk. He's on his second TMobile phone, and still having the same issues. My experience with Tmobile is that their reception blows in the area I live (such as reception dropping to zero and remaining totally disconnected for the last five miles on my way home). Also, because my phone would be added to my fiance's existing plan, I'd only be spending $30 a month for her shared minutes, & unlimited data, and texts. If I went with Boost or Virgin, I'd be spending more.
So, AT&T problems. Tmobile Problems. Verizon, Boost, and Virgin would all cost more. You even make mention that I likely had Tmobile and moved away from them because I am not currently on tmobile, despite having a Tmobile phone. Why don't we get things back on topic, to where I can simply get some recommendations for Sprint, rather than getting me onto another network or company? Also, why do you randomly encapsulate and capitalize letters?
If you want to stick with HTC get an evo 4g lte, pretty much your only option right now, and as it's sprints version of the one x its a damn good one. I can't say for sure that its supported by cyanogenmod as I haven't looked in that forum, but would be shocked if it wasn't already/on the way soon given the popularity of the device. Personally I'm waiting for sprint to get the galaxy s3, but that's just a matter of personal preference as it and the one x are pretty similar spec-wise...

Anyone else having terrible mobile data performance?

I've been with ATT for a tear bow. I had the S4 before this G3. On my S4 I would have LTE most places around my town. Since getting my G3 I rarely get LTE. When I do get LTE it doesn't hold on to that connection very long.
Yesterday I was trying to look something up and I was on Edge (3g) and it was taking forever, so I grabbed my wife's S5 and it was on LTE (also on ATT) and the internet worked great.
Are the radios in this phone just that bad? I'm going to get a new Sim card today to see if that can fix the issue, I'm hesitant to return the phone for another because I'll probably get a refurb and my luck with refurb cell phones hasn't been good

I've had my phone for a little over a month now and it's been running great until a few days ago when I noticed the reception was really low in places that I normally get full bars. Not sure what the issues is.

so i got a new sim card, lets see how this goes
I have bad reception at home but can still get 12mb down on LTE. Downtown I get 35 down and 17 up with 4 bars. Signal can't penetrate the brick at home. I drop calls constantly. I'm about to pick up a microcell but data is great.
Much better than Sprint in my area. My Sprint GS5 radio is real garbage. Kills the battery too. The Sprint variant of the GS5 is horrible with Spark.
You may have a lemon radio in your phone.
I'm wondering that, I'd hate to get a refurb and fine out it performs the same

I got a new sim yesterday also. not looking like it's making much of a difference. I can't get full bars unless i'm out on the street. I used to get full bars in my office, relatively close to a window.
Don't really want to trade this if for a refurb to have the same thing.
Is the antenna on the back of the battery case? or is that just a 'booster'?

I've had the AT&T G3 since July 18th with no problems. My old G-note would not pick up LTE in my office at work but I get LTE with this phone. No dropped calls and super fast data. I live in northern VA outside DC so LTE is really good here.

as far as bars go mine seems just about right, but it does lose service a bit more than my S4 did. sometimes my wife and i will both have 3 or 4 bars and she will have LTE and i will be on EDGE or 4G
Absolutely love the device as a smartphone, but unfortunately suffer from the same issues as the rest of you here.
Loses signal where other ATT devices do not, drops LTE for HSPA or EDGE where other devices stay on LTE.
Really hoping the crappy radio can be fixed with a firmware update, and that it isn't a hardware design flaw...

Not sure what if anything changed, possibly something with the network but now I get full bars at my desk, where yesterday I wasn't. I know this isn't very scientific but now I get full bars in the same seat where for the last week I've been down 1 or 2. I didn't think to run a speedtest before but it looks good now, 18.4 down and 10 up.

I also forgot to mention that when I had my Sim swapped out that ISIS (Did they change the name because now it says ' Soft Card') doesn't work. When I launch the Soft Card (Isis) app it says that i need an enhanced SIM. So it looks like I have to go back to AT&T to get yet another SIM.

Of another G3? I wouldn't waste time doing that. Sounds like they're all the same radio-wise.
Waiting on an OTA too... but if nothing comes, I will jump ship to another device altogether. One with a competent radio.

I want to root and try to change this in the build prop.
Permanent LTE Option
# default value is 9

Part of me thinks it will help
I believe this makes the phone hang onto an LTE connection as long as possible

Switching to AT&T - Is it easy?

My Verizon service is great everywhere... Except for at work. There, it's abysmal.
They just installed AT&T repeaters throughout the plant where I work, so the choice has become clear. I gotta make the jump.
I have 3 additional lines that I want to take with me, and I don't want anyone to lose their phone number.
Is it really as simple as walking into an AT&T store and signing up with them?
The phones I'll be taking are:
My M8, a Galaxy S4, a Droid Razor Maxx, and an iPhone 5.
What can I expect?

Just walk in to an AT&T store since all of thoose VZW phones are unlocked you'll get AT&T band 4 LTE(if in your area) and HSPA + on the M8 and S4 and you'll get HSPA + fake 4G on the Razr and iPhone 5 it's $15 per phone since your doing byod and then the cost of shared data.
Good Luck
Ok so I made the switch, and all phones are running.
Problem is, none of them are getting LTE. It appears that my firmware doesn't have that frequency band enabled or something.
Is it possible to flash AT&T firmware without bricking my phone?

No you don't need to do that; it is just that AT&T does not use band 4 spectrum in your area, and later on you'll have to buy an AT&T phone with their band 17 primary LTE Band. Hopefully HSPA + will suffice for you. Also double check that your APNs are correct or else you may have issues. with MMS.

[DISCUSSION] - Moving Verizon S9+ to T-Mobile

I decided to move from VZW to T-Mo! Woooot!
First I will share my experience with the setup and porting of my new accounts then talk about using a VZW Phone on a T-Mo line. Yeah, I know there are couple of these threads already but they are somewhat old and unmonitored.
The transition went smooth but seemed to take almost 1.5 hours in the T-Mo store! I thought that was kinda excessive! I think the employee that was helping us was new. She didn't know much, couldn't explain anything, and kept going to her manager with every simple question I asked. Its all good, new employees have to learn! So I was fine with that aspect of the switch. It was a Sunday afternoon with nothing else going on.
They moved me from a 24GB Plan on VZW to the T-Mo One Military plan. I then added the $10.00 advanced data package on our phones. Its nice not worrying about overages and NOT paying an arm and leg for the data plan!
So my VZW bill went from about $350 to $150.00 on T-Mo. In all fairness I do have device payments on VZW, but moved those phones to save money. Will pay them off on the final bill. Still pretty happy with this! The device payments accounted for $80.00 of the VZW Bill. So I am still saving about $120.00 a month.
So now onto the service aspect.... Over all T-Mo, in FARGO ND, cant compete with Verizon! Not at all. Oh well, not too worried, I get decent coverage and "fair" data speeds.
At home, T-Mo gets about 10 megs down and 2 megs up. This was about the same speed Verizon had before they upgraded whatever tower was near my house. So, ok, at home, data sucks. No biggie, I have decent home internet package and to be quite frank, I never use my phone when I am home. I have so many gadgets with bigger screens to surf with.
At Work, Both Verizon and T-Mo get the same, 5 to 10 down and 1 to 5 up. Oh well. I can say that T-Mo is more reliable in this specific building for data when you are near a window, which I am. However, when you go into the building, where there are no Windows, T-Mo drops its data pretty low. We are talking about EDGE data. Verizon speeds would drop but not as drastic as the T-Mo. All in all I would say at work everything is equal.
Have not been around town much but when driving to work today I was using speedtest.net along the way. In general, Verizon beets T-Mo all the way from home to work.
So, now that I am a T-Mo customer with a Verizon phone I realized that there was going to be a minor learning curve. I cant get Advanced Calling features such as WiFi Calling, HD Calling, and Simultaneous Talk and Text! I knew something like what would happen because of difference in carrier implementation of those services. No biggie there. I understand that I would only need to flash the USERDATA partition to transform my VZW to a T-Mo s9+. Can anyone confirm that?
Also, I heard that the latest T-Mo update is hosed and not being pushed to the phone. I am currently on Verizon build ARE6 Dated Mid May 2018. I am not sure of the boot loader versions but I am thinking I should be able to go back one build on the T-Mo build and flash it. Hopefully. Anyone know about this?
Right now, I am at work, and I was wondering, was anyone able to turn on the advanced calling on Verizon Firmware without flashing USERDSATA? Also, those of you that made this switch with this phone, did you flash the T-Mo USERDATA? I was actually thinking about flashing the International Snap Dragon or the US Unbranded Snapdragon ROM on this phone instead of T-Mo. Did anyone do that? What sort of drawbacks did you have?

You'll need to wait until the U1 rom gets updated to bootloader V2. You'll need to successfully flash to the unlocked without Sim, then flash the Tmobile specific files with the Tmobile Sim in.

Thanks for the heads up.
Why the switch? Here I get free Verzion service as long as I have Comcast (Xfinity) internet. No internet? You can get cell phone service for $10 bucks.

Wow! Thats crazy good. WE dont have Comcast here and I can assure that CableOne and Midcontitennt cable will not be offering cell service anytime soon! Hell, we barely have a decent selection of HD channels. The big cable company doesnt even have Comedy Central.
I live in Fargo man. We dont have options. We just take what we can get, lol
And an update to anywho who may have read this...
The U1 v2 Bootloadder for th eunlocked device is now available thanks to @bboii86
The thread is here: //G965U1 XAA\\ Stock Odin Files Firmware G965U1UES2ARF4
I flashed this and I am totally Verizon free now! When the phone booted up it asked to reboot so it could provision the phone with the SIM (T-Mo).
When i did it came back up and WiFi calling was enabled.
Woot! My jouney is complete!

Hey, I'm planning to do the same you did in the next few weeks.
I'm a bit lost on what to do (first samsung phone ever), could you go trough the steps you performed?
Did you had to change the CSC at all?
Thanks!

I don't use cable (other than their internet). I get all my shows off torrents. My relative does have cable and does have 3 televisions, I just don't use it.

No, I did not do a CSC change. I only flashed the U1 firmware linked in the prior post.
I let it factory reset, the phone booted, told me it needed to reboot to adjust features for the SIM and then it came back up a second time. Walked through set up and everything worked fine.
If you are new to Samsung then you need to get familiar with an app for your PC called Odin. Its the too that is used to flash factory firmware to Samsung devices. There are tons of tutorials on how to use Odin so I wont bother with a walk through.
And one last follow up.
I have now flashed the T-MO ARF4 update and have ALL the T-Mobile Features. When I call I get the "HD+" icon now.
