I found this in a US S7 Edge discussion and I was very happy to know that it actually works (brilliantly) in stock devices too! :good:

Unfortunately no options to do that =( Its alright though, it doesn't pop up, it just stays on the notification bar.

Is it faster than adguard?
I've just used crystal for the Samsung browser and it's been great at blocking ads with low battery drain and no annoying notification in the bar. Only works on the stock browser though. However the browser itself is very snappy and optimized on the s7e and there's even a slight performance increase to chrome IMO

Thanx man. I was so sad that i could root and use adaway but this crystal app is amazing. No ad what so ever and browser now is freaking fast. My only question is why such a great app that does what adguards does is free? Any catch i should be aware?

Tried that, ads still appear in apps. With block this they're completely gone in apps.
Block this is blocking connections to google apps, i would assume due to the heavy ad content in things like the play store.
After testing again it seems that block-this is not blocking google as I previously thought.

I was unable to use google now and now on tap with block-this enabled the other day.
I checked again today and all is working fine, maybe google was just having issues.
I will edit my previous post so people do not think that was a block-this issue.

It looks very attractive to use, but it changes your DNS. So, all your internet traffic will pass the DNS servers of block-this. Free of use, to good to be true.

I just try to not root my phone But the ads are really annoying.
Adaway helped me a lot in the past, but the phone has to be rooted.
Is there any alternative available?
Adguard, you can buy the lifetime license for around 4€ when paying in the russian currency.
Add another 2€ for tasker if you're annoyed of the little key symbol.

I just tried that news app with block this and it blocked the ads at the bottom. Block this is the only free app that can block ads in apps, the others you need to pay for.

I never really used it.
I'm using Adguard since i bought my S7 (don't wanna root it just yet). Didn't notice any major battery drain with Adguard but i will try Block-this for a few days... Just installed it, the app doesn't seem to have any options :/ but nevermind...

Nope, no options....but it does its job :good:
For browsers I highly recommend "adblock browser". I doesn't address ads in other apps but it does a fantastic job blocking them while surfing the Internets - and you can get it free from the play store. (No extra setup required. Install and launch) great for say... streaming video sites that traditionally would throw a ton of pop ups and redirects at you.

Couldn't agree more! The only reason I used to root my phone was to block annoying ads and there was no effective way to block in-app ads without a root until I found block-this. This little freebee works like a charm effectively blocking both in-browser and app ads. Few times I do randomly see ads on some webpages, but I can live with that. The only annoying part is that there is a persistent key icon and VPN notification in the notification area but I can live with this, given the comfort this freebee brings without any root.

A guy here mentioned that you can remove the symbol it with Tasker. I tried this, but I have no idea how to do it.

try nochromo browser. search xda. it's chromium, so just like chrome.
You can not remove the VPN key icon without being root. Even with tasker.

Adguard works wonders. I can't post a link because I don't have enough posts. But it's just adguard dot com.
I read about block-this but I don't understand how it works or if it secure. Has anyone done a deep dive into this app? I'm very concerned with security and data leakage.
Is Adguard the next best alternative?

Any non-root adblocker uses a VPN to re-route traffic through via a custom hosts file that filters out the ads, Adguard uses a local VPN for http traffic, but for https I think they use a remote server (https blocking is disabled by default)

Thank you both for the suggestions! blocking within apps would be great too! I was just worried about data leakage to third party servers etc... I don't quite understand how everything works in detail but the developer of Block-This has a thread going on XDA (https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/themes/block-ad-blocker-root-t3338098) and seems like a honest dev, but you can't be sure unless you understand how the system works. I'll try to get Steve Gibson from Security Now Podcast to get into it in detail, he understands it down to the base and explains it well for the slow among us such as I.

That's true. But obviously one can leave the https filtering option disabled if concerned about proxying through the remote server. And I would think that opting to use it should be relatively safe considering that all https traffic is encrypted. The destination site is the only party who should be able to decrypt it.

it's been awhile since i used to root my phone so was looking for a rootless adblock solution.
The best idea is to change your DNS with one of the various available who filter ads, tracking sites and phishing ones.
You may also want to change your DNS to defeat country related website filtering.
To change DNS on a rootless phone you need to route all traffic through a local VPN.
I've tried some firewalls and dns changers but unfortunately they were not up to my standards.
They were either coded poorly, using too many resources, not working with play store or using shady and too many permissions for my taste.
Eventually decided to make my own and to make it as simply as possible:
My DNS is a little apk of less than 25kb size, extremely optimized and with no impact on your phone.
When in background it will use around 3-4mb tops.
There are no shady permissions, no internet permission even. You can route the traffic locally without any fear, no data will ever leave your phone.
It won't use any battery nor data or cpu.
Since traffic is being routed locally anyway i've added an handy network speed indicator on status bar for devices with Android 6+
This was initially planned for myself only but after receiving some good feedbacks from many friends, i've decided to make it publicly available.
MyDNS will be available shortly after some of your feedbacks on Play Store for a coffee price, free here on XDA for a while.

Once you setup your new DNS, it may take a while for DNS cache to expire and your ADS to disappear. Either reboot or wait 10/15 min.

Thanks, yes but in the end i'm an optimizer freak and realized all i needed was a simple dns redirect without any bells and whistles.
Also having the net speed on status bar allowed me to remove the various speed meters i had.

Anyway, this is so simple and lightweight. Very nice. Unfortunately, what i need for now is a no root ad-blocking solution with more features. This is because Android allows only one app to use VPN at a time.
Maybe I can use this for my secondary device. Thanks. It's always nice to see a lightweight and minimalist application.

I tend to disagree. Tried Adhell since I got my phone on launch day, this week went back to DNS66. Hate to go the VPN route, but Adhell did nothing for me browsing Chrome and in some other apps. And before it's said I do not plan on using some other browser.

I just use adblocker for samsung by betafish. Although that doesn't do apps, just browser.
I used BlockThis on my S7 occasionally. Haven't tried anything on the S8+ yet though.
Adhell is ok but it doesnt block everything. All it needs is the ability to import your own hosts file and it would effectively give us adfree/adaway for rooted devices but no sign of such a feature yet despite quite a few requests from people, maybe if enough people request it then he will add this. It does have the ability to change dns servers now so you can try using an ad blocking dns server with it too. Disconnect pro works in the exact same way using the knox firewall, but seems to let just as many ads through but comes with an extortionate price and is supposedly geared more towards blocking trackers than ads, and you cant change the dns.
Other than that you have the vpn based ones like adguard (not free), dns666 (free). I just spotted one called netguard (free with ads and option to buy pro version) https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-netguard-root-firewall-t3233012 which sounds good and lets you use your own hosts file but again its a vpn blocker.
I use Blokada and so far it's the best for me

Yes it will, but you don't want to touch that thing with a barge pole. It isn't specifically made for ad blocking, its for tracking blocking. The price is a joke. You can't customise what its blocking at all. adhell is free, does the same thing, is specifically targeting blocking ads, and you can add/remove things from the list, which you cant do in disconnect pro. no contest. if only the dev of adhell would implement being able to import our own hosts files then we would have an adfree/adaway for rooted phones, but I dont know why he hasnt. most of the work to enable that is already done as it is obviously using some sort of hosts file anyway, just his own one instead of one we can customise ourselves.
my main issue is that nothing seems to block the ads that are in apps in your secure folder, regardless of whether it is a knox blocker or a vpn blocker, which i find ridiculous. trying to install the blocker into secure folder does not work and would double your battery drain even if it did work so that isnt an option.

Where can I find more info on adhell... The website or github does not give much at all... Also what is package disabler integration for?

While it's not free I use adgaurd. They had a sale and I think it was under 15 bucks for a life time license. it's a VPN app and I haven't found anything else be able to compete with it's protection from ads. I love it. Probably had it about 6 months now. The free stuff tends to not work well at all. I've tried them all.

I've come from a rooted phone where I had a hosts file to block ads, but now on P30 with no root I'm struggling to find a good alternative. I have found blokada works but sometimes the system kills it, or it eats a lot of battery.
Can anyone recommend any settings or alternatives for adblocking?

I'm using AdGuard for 2 years now and it works perfect. SInce v3 was released it is I guess the best adblocker not requiring root. You might need to make a few settings, but nothing hard. Also, if you don't want to pay for it, you can use BlockThis.

I just changed from Block-this to Blokada on my P10 on Pie and there's hardly any difference in battery drain. Set your dns in Blokada to Keweon instead of the default settings. Keweon is also an ad blocking dns.
