Never used a Galaxy, few questions.... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Have had a LG G3 for close to 2 years now. I'm rooted and the phone has been nice but the battery is terrible. My USB port won't recognize any PC any longer. I like the big screen and that I'm rooted so I can tweak my status bar icon colors, NAV bar button colors, etc.
Been debating between LG G5 and Galaxy 7s Edge. What are the dimensions of the edge? How customizable is Touchwiz regarding changing colors like mentioned earlier? Do you believe the T-Mobile varient will be rooted? What are your thoughts on the G5?

This. I've had the G2, G4 and V10 but I'm somewhat turned off by the G5. I've also been frustrated with decreasing dev support. Having said that there has been great stock LG root support with "G_ Xposed" and even the LG Home launcher was somewhat customizable without root. I'm sure it's too soon to tell but I wonder how customizable TW will be, what kind of dev support the S7 Edge will have and whether any of the Edge specific features can be added to non-stock roms. That happened with the G2 as well as the G4.

I've never used LG before. I've used only Nokia and Samsung. Currently I'm using Galaxy S4 and Note 4.
I can tell you that I love my note 4, my screen on time never less than 4.5 hours. I can say for heavily usage it last 1 full day.
I really can't wait for the price of S7 to drop, or maybe I will wait for note 6.
Now between LG G5 and Galaxy 7s Edge, I will definitely go for Samsung.

Anyone excited about Galaxy S5?

MWC is starting in a couple of days and if tradition is followed, Samsung shall launch the next Galaxy soon.
Too many reports suggest that the latest device shall have a whole different UI, fingerprint sensor in the home button, 16mp camera and also a new LED flash module.
I, for one, am looking forward to seeing the features in action. Agreed, the development on Sammy devices sucks, specially Exynos, but hey, I can't deny the fact that they make the best phones too.
What say you?

I say it's a completely useless thread.
No it's not useless!
To be honest I'm getting tired of the yearly releases for the sake of it. From the leaks it looks like the S5 will have a qHD screen, fingerprint reader, and the usual upgraded processor and ram. Probably a 64 bit OS but if you know a bit about 32/64bit you'll know it's pointless and just for marketing.
The fingerprint reader is also pointless. Again Samsung are doing it just because apple did and don't have access to the same quality solution. The iPhone solution works really well. Which pains me to say. But Sammy's swipe solution is just going to take longer to unlock and is the same fad that laptops went through 5 years ago. Only business laptops come with fingerprint readers nowadays.
Lastly is the OS. I don't feel that Samsung adds any value with their touchwiz extras. My phone has had Cyanogenmod installed from about 3 months in and I've started to think it's going the way of touchwiz and not adding any value.
I'm running the Nexus 5 ROM with xposed and that gives me all the features and modifications I need. Xposed is the real game changer here. The only problem is the stability. The S4 running a Nexus 5 ROM is never going to be as stable as the Nexus 5. The Nexus 5 is a faster device then the S4 and the battery life is far, far better. I now have one as my work phone and part of me is hoping the S5 doesn't have any ground breaking features that makes me want it. I'll then buy a Nexus 5 and lower my mobile contract saving some money in the process.
The Nexus 5 may not have a qHD display but within 6-9 months the Nexus 6 will with a more mature processor and better battery life. Until the Galaxy has a bleeding edge feature I don't see the point in having a bleeding edge device. And it doesn't look like the S5 will
^ You know there's a diff between qHD and QHD right? qHD is quarter-HD while QHD is Quad-HD, the S5 may have the latter IF rumors are true.
Anyway...
I'm very excited, I'm going to get it in either March or April, looking forward to the new UI, Camera and Exynos CPU, I'm also looking forward to a new design, I hope it's a stunner (fingers crossed).
Will use my GS4 as a 2nd line when I get my GS5.
I'll only be excited (related to xda topics) when I'm able to kick out Knox from my phone

I think this time I will not get the s5. Because exynous processor, knox efuse and because LG and Sony learn how to made the things right
Next phone? Maybe LG or Motorola ( depending of what they can do after s5 release)

Let's see...
1. KNOX
2. Exynos
3. Touchwiz
Hell no...buying S4 is one of most biggest regret. Next phone? Probably LG or Sony or OPPO

I am with you because of Exynos but i think LG plays only with numbers and names. For example S4 and G2 both have GPS but nobody say that G2 takes 2-3 mins to find ~10 sats and ours S4 takes 2-3 seconds to find 15+ sats! poor GPS chip or poor software i don`t know.
Another example is WiFi-Direct. both have it but in G2 you can only use it with LG devices.
I think that LG is still not a good buy.

I think it's unarguable that Samsung offers cutting edge hardware. If only they had a better software design team. Honestly speaking, I'd much rather use a Snapdragon variant over exynos because of lack of development.

I agree that Samsung are at the cutting edge but that edge is not longer very far ahead. Other companies are already producing QHD displays and phones with finger print readers. You're right about the Exynos processor. As awesome as it maybe there's a lack of community support and so far Europe has only had the Qualcomm offering. I don't mind this as once again the Qualcomm offering isn't hugely different.
Please don't think I'm complaining or trashing Samsung here. I think the whole smartphone development has slowed down over the past 2 years since the S3.

what do you guys think ? ! will it work in UK ? and has anybody bought a phone from Korea over the net ? always wonder if you would actually get the goods ? :good:
Looks like it works on bands 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 - So it should be good for EE's current network in the UK (bands 3 and 7) and Three's (band 3), but not band 20 used currently by O2 and Vodafone. To confuse matters further, EE also own bandwidth on band 20, while Vodafone own bandwidth on band 7.
Long and short - I'd wait for an international version.

Its good phone. The textured back however is slippery. Not a good combo. The phone feels faster than my Note 3, however in benchmarks its not as fast. The camera is x 10 better than the note 3's specially in low light.
Here's a quite unboxing of the F350S version I got from Korea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_8qSLuWc-c

The G3 will most likely have the better specs of all 3. And it's their flagship phone.

I can't see what else the G3 would have over this, unless the bump up the resolution to QHD and offer a micro SD slot. Also people think this is to big of a phone. Besides that, maybe a bump in pixels on the camera to help with marketing. Besides that, don't see anything crazy. Only thing I wish this phone had, was stereo speakers like the Z2 or HTC one. That and a bigger battery. Still an amazing phone and love where you can shrink the screen for one handed use... Love it!

I can't tell you how excited I am to hear the thoughts that this camera is not only better in low-light as well as overall than the note 3.
I am disgusted in the note 3's both auto focus and low light performance.
For me it the best device out there, but with Note 3 on the same height. Both have almost identical hardware specifications. I chose the Note 3 because of the awesome S Pen included and the software around it. I love to draw, and I'm a Draw Something 2 addict...so yeah, Note 3 was a better choice for my needs. The S Pen is incredibly accurate and the floating dot without touching the display is perfect for drawing

Bought one last week. Love it. But be careful of the 4.4.2 Ext SD access problem. If you rely on your Ext SD a lot and don''t plan to root your phone, you probably should look elsewhere or wait for a fix/update.

I cant believe they are selling/updating devices with this type of issue. I would be very angry and a customer service nightmare if I dropped $700-800 on a device and had this crap happening.

It's the policy of Google since Kitkat. Don't like it - don't buy it, that simple
Even all Galaxy like S4 or Note 3 has this "bug"
The apps can now write only to external_SD/Android/data/appname folder, but can read any files from SD. So devs must update their apps to comply

Im tempted to take the ota on my s4 and note 3...observe the issue then take the devices back to where I bought them (outright I may add) and demand my money back for them screwing up my device.
I bought both from rogers who is also my carrier....cant see how they could refuse..its their ota that "broke" the device lol.
This is just one small example of why I never take otas these days..the updates cause issues and take away features it seems.

[Q] G2 $399 at T-Mobile - a good deal?

I see it's available for $399 at T-Mobile. So $200+ less than the current "flagship" phones that are pretty boring IMO.
Do you guys still like the G2? Is it easy to root? Any problems with it other than the weird buttons on the back?
I took a look at it at a local corporate store. The one on display was messed up and the rep of course told me it was a "bad" phone and I needed to get an s5.
Thanks!

The phone is nice ! I've had it since February. I have no complaints about the phone however when the the g3 comes out we are going back to Verizon because T-Mobile just isn't cutting it. I had no issues rooting it and the buttons on the back were weird at first but now are natural to me. One thing though these forums are dead not a lot of development like I was used to coming from the note 2 . but like I said I think its a great phone

I'm concerned about lack of development - rooting Kit Kat. Thanks.
The regular g2 forum is pretty active. Development for t-mobile seems like it kind of sucks. Good luck.

I've been a loyal T-Mobile customer for over 10 years, the last 8 without a contract. So I've been able to leverage my status as a long-time user to secure for myself an outstanding price for my unlimited data plan that no other carrier comes remotely close to matching. That said, I got my G2 on Sunday after my trusty Amaze was stolen from my car on Friday night while fueling-up on my way home from work.
I walked into the T-Mobile store with the intention of getting a Nexus 5, but left with the G2. For the same price there is no comparison. The longer battery life, better sound quality and camera, along with the doubled storage capacity sold me. I personally can't justify spending more than 400 bucks for any handset that will be obsolete in a couple of years and with performance and features that rival those devices that cost over $200 more, I thought it was a no brainer.
As far as the comments about lack of development are concerned, it doesn't bother me. I plan on compiling my own Cyanogenmod, Pac-ROM, and Evervolv as soon as I get bored with stock and get time off from work. Besides, in the few days I've used this device I've found its OS to be one of the best stock Android I've ever used (I like it way more than any version of Sense that I've used). It doesn't deviate too far from ASOP yet has additional tweaking that is normally only found in custom ROMs. In fact, if I can get some time to figure out how to root and install a compatible aftermarket recovery, I might just deodex and debloat it and leave it as is for awhile.
As I said, at its current $398 price point it's got more bang for the buck than any of the other handsets T-Mobile is selling.
Just my 2 cents
Ciao
I considered nexus 5, galaxy 4, htc m8 and lg g2. I came from nexus 4 and the battery life was close to my previous iphone 4s. lg g2 is almost 3 times longer than nexus 4 with one charge. So, nexus 4 is removed from list. HTC is great but the price difference is huge and so it is out. Samsung 4 price was higher, galaxy s3 price was close to lg g2. After checking specs, performance, battery, lg g2 is a clear winner.
So far i have only 2 minor issues.
Swiftkey app is not compatible with this and causes lots of FC. It took me a week to figure out what was causing the FC. I have to update to a beta and then uninstall it - now no issues so far.
3 out of 5 times, i hit the home button when trying to type space in the keyboard. I installed g3 keyboard - has lots of options, so far good.
If you have about $400 or so in your pocket, I highly recommend this phone.
I believe this phone is capable of the future tmobile Voice Over LTE. But I am not sure if this will handle the 700hz band that tmobile is planning to implement - recently they bought from verizon. When i tried the hidden menu, that band is not available - but specs say it is compatible. May be it will show up if I unlock the phone or if install a non-stock ROM??
So, it is future proof at least for some time .....

S6 edge rooted or note 5 stock??

Here's my dilemma.... I have a s6 edge rooted and running a custom Rom. My friend purchased a note 5 but wants to trade straight up because he really wants root and feels the note 5 is a little too big. What would you do in this situation? Both phones are black and Verizon 64gb. I'm so torn because I know the note 5 won't see root anytime in the near future

I never had the edge but I had the S6 with root and without. I can honestly say root did nothing performance wise for me, the phone worked great both ways. Yes I would prefer a rooted phone but with the debloat tool you can disable (hide) any app on the phone without root, foxfi works for tethering and themes are built in. If it's the bigger screen you want and don't mind loosing root it's a fair trade. Value wise I would say you are getting the better deal because the Note is worth more and it's newer.

You make some valid points. I think I'm going to stick with my rooted edge and here's why.
1. Adaway, I hate adds especially on certain apps.
2. Flashfire, I have the ability to flash roms. I'm running a custom Rom now that seriously increased the overall feel and speed of my phone.
3. I included the ram tweak which resolved the ram management issue.
4. I can flash custom themes!! Yes Samsung has a theme store, but it doesn't compete with akonda theme (yes that is spelled right)
5. My battery life is equal to the note 5 print screens I've seen posted on xda.
6. I really plan in buying the new nexus because I miss the dev community. Plus I love having a phone that works for any carrier 100%.
Don't get me wrong, if the note 5 for Verizon magically gets root I will buy the phone cash same day

It definitely sounds like the Note 5 isn't the ideal phone for you. It for sure won't satisfy the crack flasher in you lol. For me I'm happy where I am, between all the phones I've switched to lately and all the ROMs I made I burnt myself out for a while. Just this year I went through a bunch of phones. I had the Note 4 retail and Dev, Droid turbo, S6, S5, LG G4, M8 and now the Note 5. 8 different phones and a few I switched back to and from. It's time for a break and enjoy what I have.
Try adguard ....no root required but it's 9.00 for a year

It definitely sounds like the Note 5 isn't the ideal phone for you. It for sure won't satisfy the crack flasher in you lol. For me I'm happy where I am, between all the phones I've switched to lately and all the ROMs I made I burnt myself out for a while. Just this year I went through a bunch of phones. I had the Note 4 retail and Dev, Droid turbo, S6, S5, LG G4, M8 and now the Note 5. 8 different phones and a few I switched back to and from. It's time for a break and enjoy what I have.

I'm right there with you bother lol, I've had this year alone note 4, note edge, nexus 6, iPhone 6 plus, and now s6 edge. I think by far the biggest selling point of any phone is the ability to use the phone on all the big U.S carriers. I've also been struggling with switching to T-Mobile. I have two lines with unlimited data for the wife and I with Verizon. I'm tired of this phone bill $200 a month is out of control.

Call customer service and tell them you are going to switch. I did and I ended up getting $30.00 off my monthly bill yesterday and when my three contracts run out soon it will be an additional $25.00 off every month per line. If you are not on it it's the customer loyalty plan. I'm only on a 4 gig plan but we hardly use one so it's plenty for us. Either way i would call them I was at $235 or so every month. I did look into T-Mobile but it isn't worth it. After the equipment charges for the new phones and insurance the savings would have only been $10 a month and inferior coverage. If you own your own phones and get good service with them it might be worth it. Cricket was a good option for me too but Verizon beat their price.

I too looked into t-mobile a little while ago, but did not find to much savings. I think carriers are starting to get on board with their pricing. Wanting to squeeze a little more out of customers since verizon and att do.

Same here s5, note 4, nexus 6, iPhone 6 +, iPhone 6, s6 edge 128gb, note 5 32gb
And I'm curios about the moto x pure and new nexus 5 xd
My wallet doesn't appreciate my interest in phones
Also trying to decide - S6 Edge or Note 5

Thanks for sharing those reasons. I have been struggling with the same question ... S6 Edge or the Note 5. Was leaning towards the Note 5 because of the 4GB of system RAM and S-Pen, but I am concerned about the RAM management issues so many people have reported. Being as locked down as the VZW version is, there is no way to fix the issue without waiting for Samsung to fix it. The extra RAM becomes pointless if you can take advantage of it.
I didn't realize that you could run custom ROMs on the Verizon S6 Edge. I knew there was root but didn't realize you could flash a recovery and install custom ROMs. That would be a big reason to go for the S6 Edge in my opinion. Especially since Root access would let me fix the Ram issues as you have done. Would you happen to have a link to the thread that showed you how to install the custom ROMs for the S6 Edge? Thanks!

So there's a choir items to address.
1. You have to be on firmware oe2 or lower in order to root. You will never be able to upgrade your firmware or root will be lost, probably forever...
2. You can find the information in the Verizon s6 edge development thread.
3. I ended up trading for the note 5 because it's worth more in eBay right now, bigger screen, spen, and the bottomline it's running newer firmware.
Since Foxfi and adguard work extremely well the note 5 will hold me over until the nexus huawei comes available. I'm done with lock bootloaders and receiving slow updates

Do you notice any memory management issues with the Note 5?

No it appears the extra gig of ram help deal with that issue.

Will Locked Bootloader/No Root be the Norm moving forward for Samsung and T-Mobile ?

Hello guys I just wanted to get a better feel of how everyone else feels right now and in particular to the Galaxy S7 as well as s7 Edge on T-Mobile having a locked bootloader making root extremely difficult to get if not impossible. This was upsetting to me not because I wanted the S7 and S7 Edge but because this set a precedent for the Note 6 which is not yet released. I started my Journey with a Galaxy Note 2 and loved them ever since. I have very large hands so I definitely needed a large phone and I really quite liked the size and features. I then got the Note 4 and was certainly happy with it for over a year. I usually only hold onto phones for a short while but that phone did pretty much everything for me so I held onto it a while. Samsung announced the Note 5 and I decided to pass due to no more SD Card so I now needed to opt for at least 64gb and no IR blaster. So I decided I wouldn’t be getting that and would look at other options. I began my hunt and ultimately one of the few phones that met my standards was the Nexus 6P since it had a 5.7-inch screen which was Amoled and had a very good camera and I decided to try out stock Android since everyone always raves of its speed and updates. Plus, root on the 6P would be easy.
Anyway the 6P has been doing fine but the battery does leave a lot to be desired (I feel touchwiz does very well with its battery optimizations). Camera is also slightly better due to speed and manual controls as well as screen brightness. The next phone on my radar is the Note 6 but with the no root precedent I’m fairly concerned. To sum it up I feel we don’t have many 5.7 inch or larger phone options out there and was wondering what devices will you guys be looking at as Note competitors especially if the new Note 6 from, T-Mobile cant be rooted? It seems manufacturers like LG and HTC are not really coming out with Note competitors and if they do they are basterdized in some fashion (like lower specs and cameras). Just makes you wonder if they are not interested in the market.
Well, from what I know lg is doing seem. V10 just got an update that apparently locked down the phone. Can't even go down to lollipop if you took the MM update...I will say you should hold onto that nexus, rest of the flashaholics and root lovers will join you soon. Lol
But to answer original post, yes that is now the norm going forward.
Gotta see t-mobile Samsung devices locked up one more time to tell.

Yes, I would agree, one more locked Samsung from Tmobile will confirm, but I would be very surprised if it came UNlocked...

This will be really sad if so. Nexus devices are fine but sometimes dont bring all the best features. If the phone is less than 5.7 inches and no Amoled its a non start for me. Liked the HTC 10 but 5.2 inch screen is no go for me lol.
