PSA: Don't change the DPI - LG V10 General

For some reason, LG likes to stick with 640 dpi as their default. Personally, I prefer 560 dpi on a screen this size.
Anyway, one can usually use adb command to change the dpi. However, on the V10, it looks like trying to use any dpi other than 560 results in System UI crashing constantly.
Don't make the mistake I did. I'm completely stock and changed the DPI without saving the SSH key in USB debugging. Hence, after a reboot System UI crashed constantly and I could reconnect via ADB because the confirmation dialog couldn't be shown. Ended up having to Factory Reset via buttons. (Power + Vol Down, Release Power then Hold Power again when LG logo appears.)

Thank you sir.

Check the camera out after you do it.
using a non rooted method can be flakey going by G4 experiences.
This is becoming a problem on other larger screen devices as well, the UI is made as if its for a smaller screen just blown up.

I finally installed xposed today and with the App Settings module, you can set the DPI per app instead of system wide. I set the home launcher to 600 and it's been fine so far. I prefer 540 but haven't tried it yet. I also changed call setting from second screen to pop up so the second screen doesn't FC when receiving a call. Hopefully this module will help others who don't like the giant icons on the default 640 setting.

You can install Xposed without being rooted? That's news to me
*Edit* My bad, just seen tmobile is rooted

@Raztrax how did you change the setting for the second screen to pop up?

Just changed my dpi to 480 on Nova.

This could be a temporary fix
Runing Nova try: "Adb shell wm density 550". Works like a charm! (As long as you dont reboot)
If you do reboot, wait for the UI to FC and then change DPI back to 640 wait for the boot to finish and then change it back to 550. Nothing is broken. You do get some minor changes in the date at the second screen but it still works perfectly.
Im not rooted

You can get around the issue by using the APP Settings app from xposed. Search System UI, change it to 640 and save. Then use Textdroider, and enter the DPI of your choice. When you restart, your system UI will still be 640 and won't crash, but the rest of your apps will be the DPI you chose.

I personally like the big icons all around even on the battery icon and signal icons and I'm not sure why they shrinked the ui in this phone completely because everything looks so small even the apps anyone know how to make it all bigger?

What happens if your phone restarts and you aren't at a PC? How do you set the DPI back to 640 to get it to boot all the way?

I tried the App Settings in the Xposed Downloads area, and the 1.11v made by someone on XDA for Lollipop (apparently 1.10 doesn't support LP). I tried changing the camera app back to 640 DPI using both apps but neither worked. Which version are you using and exactly how are you doing it? Once I changed my DPI with Texdroider, I had to go through hell of restoring the phone (reflashing system.img - the build.prop backup didn't work at all for some reason). Also what DPI are you using?

@Nitemare3219-What are you trying to change? If you change the dpi of Nova (haven't tried stock launcher yet), you can do so with Nova. I have mine set at 480, no issues at all.

When I was messing with DPI (shell wm density) I tried keeping the Camera app at 640 - didn't seem to work. I'm not sure if I should be trying to use wm density or a DPI app to change build.prop. Going to test both I guess since I'm about to make a backup.

Editing the build.prop didn't work for me, I haven't tried the other way yet, as I'm happy with changing dpi of Nova.

Launcher is the last thing I needed changed. Apps weren't showing enough stuff at all! lol. After installing Xposed and using App Settings (worked this time - get v1.11 from XDA for Lollipop) to keep certain system apps including systemui and secondscreen at 640 DPI, I used adb shell wm density 540 which affects the rest of the phone. So my apps and such are showing a lot more, but the phone has no issues working normally.

I've changed Nova and my browsers (480). Any idea what would happen if I changed Wm density after changing the apps dpi?

Hero LCD density problems

There are 2 apps on the market that can change the LCD density of ourphones. However after using them my phone starts to reboot repeatedly
I am trying to setthedensity to 140. I'm running cm6.0 . Is there a certain setting that our phones like in addition to the 160 original setting. I love it set to140 so I'm hoping its something stupid.

[Q] How do you Perm Change LCD Density on Gtab?

I want to know how to change the Lcd Density from 160 to 140. Im using Zpad clean rom. I Went to System/Build.prop and I didnt see the Ro.density text or what ever it is. LCD Density for root works but it resets after restart. Anyone know how?
Figured it out. In system/Build.prop using Root Explorer I just made my own line and put ro.sf.lcd_density=140 and then saved and rebooted the tablet. Seems to have worked. If somone decides to change density like this dont forget to make a backup just in case.
EDIT: EHHH. Slide down bar was buggy and pissed me off and some apps wher windowed a bit so i gave in and just bought LCD Density changer from Market for a buck and use that. Works great.

works well for me by changing the system/build.prop to 140.
Changed to 140 also and it makes some apps not fill screen but not a big hitter actually see more on screen with browsers and other apps. Especially with apps like settings and ROM Manager, etc....
Also went down and trying currently at 130. Here are screen shots of what it is like at default and 130. I kind of like seeing more of the screen.
Here are the setting I used in the build.prop file
ro.sf.lcd_density=130
Running Vegan 5.1 here are screenshots before and after
Screenshots below default and 130 settings:
Yeh lcd density app same as just changing it in build.prop. Slide down bar not full screen anymore when set too 140 on zpad clean rom. Wonder why.. Hmmm... worked b4 so now no point in the app except faster changes. Oh well.
Have you checked Spare Parts app to see if you have "Compatibility Mode" checked or unchecked?
I believe Unchecked should open things back to full screen.
I unchecked compatibility it at 130 and 140. No effect to Android notifications.

you should be able to do the adb shell size or density not rooted... may cause issues with bootloops though so watch out...
theres also a toggle under the settings-home for a larger grid on the stock launcher which essentially makes it larger however unlike a samsung phone this setting doesn't reflect if you are using another launcher other than stock
'adb shell wm density XXX' did work for me, but unfortunately the only density I can get to work other than the default 640 is 540. Any other usual value causes the com.android.phone app to crash repeatedly.

adb shell wm size should work and not cause app crashes... only issue with it is that you have to keep messing with it to find the best setting

I figured it out, turn on USB Tethering.
Edit: You can also set USB mode to Midi Device.
using this method messes up many applications, including the Always-on Display.
have to edit the build.prop file to change it properly.
560 works fine for me. Only slight issue is the maps navigation popup for turning. The icons a little off center

Rotate Screen

Does anyone know how to get the screen to rotate to where the USB c plug is at the top. I've checked rotate in the settings and it rotates in both landscape positions but cannot get it to rotate in portrait? I use the pixel in my car and it sits on the angled dash but cannot hook up the power cord because it's on the bottom where it sits. Thanks

@jreink01 - Dude, I think the best way for you to do this would be to install a different launcher. I believe Nova Launcher will allow you to choose rotation angles of 90, 180, & 270...so pretty much everything you'd need to view your phone at whatever angle your cables require.

Not really any specific app, just would like the ability for them all to rotate if I need to open one up. If you can if you have nova launcher installed, can you check your various apps to see if it works in that launcher? Thanks so much.

Hold your finger on the Home screen until the options open up -
Settings > Look & Feel > Screen Orientation
Set to Auto-rotate
You also have to ensure that in your system settings you have it set to allow rotation.
System settings > Display > When device is rotated
Set to "Rotate the contents of the screen"
I've done all that, still will not rotate, spoke to Google support, they are sending a update, specifically to my phone which they said should fix the issue.

Just to be sure, you've also checked the box under Accessibility settings to allow screen rotation, right?
Also, recomhub.com has an article on this that suggests checking to see if your accelerometer and gyroscope are working correctly. The dialer code is:
*#0*#
Under the service mode screen, tap on "sensors" and do a self test.
Their only other recommendation if your carrier locked you out of that service screen is to do a hard reset. That's also been known to fix the screen rotation issue, but at the cost of losing your data. So make a backup if you go that route.
That is checked under accessibility settings, I also tried the service menu, but was unable to get that to work. I'm on the sprint Network. After talking with Google support, they said that sprint would not have changed the service menu by using their sim card and activating the phone. Don't understand why that service menu won't work. I don't want to do a factory reset as it took me quite awhile to get the phone setup the way I want it. Thanks for your feedback in trying to help.

@jreink01 - interestingly enough, the Maps app rotated 180° for me yesterday. So, I'm guessing the determining factor is going to be whether or not the particular app you're using supports that orientation.
Edit: it only works or goes 180° during actual navigation.

First Impressions of Android 7

I have had this update for about 10 days now and I seem to have issues I never had with this phone before. Nothing major, just annoying things like notifications for SMS not being 100% reliable, and if I use the keypad on a call it seems to add a number press when I put the phone to my ear and now for the first time, I am having trouble with my PC and my phone getting into file transfer mode. Has anyone else had anything strange happen since the update? Or am I just the lucky one.
So far it's fixed all of my issues. With my auto brightness, Bluetooth, and my locking issues. Haven't had any of the ones you've listed.
Sent from my SM-N920V using Tapatalk
Late notification in Nougat can be due to the more aggressive Doze. Turn off Optimization for your sms app to solve it.
The update did solve the sensor stop working bug they introduced in the last few updates, but yeah there are quirks I don't like:
- The checkbox to enable/disable auto brightness is now buried another click deeper.
- Samsung Themes are now not fully compatible with this Samsung Nougat update. #genius
- Status bar font is too small and weirdly tall.
- In optimized mode the lock screen disappears after 3 seconds. It's useless and there isn't a setting to increase this.
- the notification slider theme is horrendously difficult to read. Font is too small, locked to black on white text. It needs to go back to how it was.
On the flip side, the App drawer now auto sorts alphabetically. Only took them this long to solve that!

Interesting...but I'm not seeing most of that. What do you mean by "optimized mode" for the screen? In the display settings under "screen mode" I've got:
Adaptive display
AMOLED cinema
AMOLED photo
Basic
i'm set on Adaptive display. In the Screen Timeout section I've got it set to one minute. I put the phone down and timed it on my watch. the screen dimmed at 50 seconds and turned off at exactly 1 minute....so seems to be working unless I'm looking at something different than you?
Status bar font doesn't look too small to me but of course "too small" is subjective. Still, my old eyes are not as good as they used to be and I can read it fine without my glasses on. Tried swtiching screen resolutions back and forth between max an 1920x1080 and didn't notice a difference between them, just to see if it was a resolution issue.
Question I always as after a major OS update: Have you done a factory reset? I have not yet. I usually run it for a while as is and do a reset when I get some time. But in the past i've seen a reset cure any number of issues.
I've only noticed 2 things wrong.
No keyboard vibration feedback when on a call.
After google play services updated my gmail emails not coming automatically. Removing/adding my google account fixed that.

Its not optimized mode for the screen. Its Power Optimized Mode (go to the settings battery menu). My comment was for the "lock screen" dissappearing after 3 seconds. This is the screen that pops up when you turn on power and BEFORE you unlock the phone. It shows summaries of notifications... for all of 3 useless seconds.

I have not reset the phone and refuse to unless something in the OS simply cannot be resolved. Just like I'm not going to reformat my Windows PC drive if a program has a bug. You should reset your system/dalvik cache. Although that should be done automatically during the update.

I too don't reformat my Windows PC to fix a bug. But I do do it after a major OS update such as Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for example. No, you don't have to but...
Any way to turn on autocorrect in the quick reply feature? When I hit reply and the keyboard pops up (standard Samsung keyboard) auto correct and predictive text do not appear not function leaving me to have to go back and retype my errors. It literally appears and works everywhere else.

It's not just changing the font. I changed mine to Samsung Sans as well and it worked fine. My issue was in the Messages app, in Settings -> Font Size, if I tried to change the font size it wouldn't stick. The font was a tad small so I wanted to increase it one level. I realized last night that once you're in the Font Size menu the header is just plain white (at least on my phone) so it looks like there is no way to back out. I was using the back button which probably cancelled the edit. I tried again but clicking the blank header and now it's working. Am I the only one who sees the white only header? All other menus seem to have the header describing the screen with back (less than) symbol, e.g. "< MESSAGES SETTINGS" but it's missing on the Font size menu.

Not sure if this is your issue, but many interface issues, including unreadable white headers, stem from the fact that Themes from prior Android versions (even Samsung Themes) are NOT fully compatible with Nougat. If you attempt to re-apply your theme then you should get that warning. I had to apply a brand new theme to solve my header issues.
