[Q] How Scratch-Resistant is the NS glass?

Hey Guys,
as the topic says, I would like to know your expierences about the scratch-resistance of the Nexus S glass.
I couldnt find anything on the net about it, only some screen protector tests, which isnt the point.
So what do you think? Is the surface pretty sensetive, should I buy a screen protector?

No scientific test here but I've had my phone for nearly a month and keep it in my pocket with no case or screen protector. I have minor scratches on the plastic back but my screen is still flawless.

Yeah I´ve read alot about the batterycase and that it scratches pretty fast! Im gonna visist my girlfriend in UK and want to buy the Nexus S there. Its only available at carphone warehouse am I right? Do they sell the white version already?

Haven't seen the white version here yet and yes only carphone warehouse sells it in the UK.

I do not own the Nexus S, but as far as I can tell from the internet, the display is from glass. That means it is as scratch-resistant as any other phone with a glass display. Yes, including phones with Gorilla Glass. Gorilla Glass only prevents the display from cracking.
The battery cover, however, is another story. Plastic has it advantages (lighter, better if you drop your phone), but you'll probably get a lot of micro-scratches over time. No big scratches, just a couple of little ones.
So my advise is: don't buy a screen protector. If you really want it, go for a super clear one, like a Seidio USG Crystal Clear. At least they don't mess with the displays colours and with the feel of the glass.
But you may consider protection for the plastic back. You could spray PlastiDip on your battery cover, buy a case or keep your phone in a pouch.

The nexus s is very much sensitive to scratches. After having the phone for about a week, I noticed fine micro scratches. I'm very careful with my phone, so more than likely they came from taking it in and out of my pocket probably due to the rough fabric of my jeans. And no I don't keep any debris in my pocket while my phone is in there. My nexus one never developed those type of scratches and there were times when my N1 was placed in my pocket with coins! imho gorilla glass does make a world of difference when it comes to scratch resistance. The NS definitely needs a protector if you want to keep the screen pristine.

I carried my NS in my pocket with my Zippo for a week and the screen never got scratched once. I'm having an issue seeing how a metal lighter case wouldn't scratch the screen but your jeans would? Unless your jeans are made of diamonds....

If you get scratches with your Nexus S, and not with your Nexus One, then you are just being unlucky. Gorilla Glass has nothing to do with it. Besides, the Nexus One also hasn't got Gorilla Glass.
That YOU get scratches on your display, doesn't mean it scratches very easily. And that you're very careful with it, also isn't an argument: as I said, sometimes it's just bad luck.
Please, anyone who wants to know if the Nexus S scratches easily (the display), ignore those 'the Nexus S scratches very easily compared to another device' replies.

Mine has not scratched on the screen at all. I typically leave it in my back jeans pocket. The black plastic has very tiny micro scratches that can only be seen at a certain angle from direct sunlight or fluorescent bulbs.
The only issue for me is the creakiness of the back cover. Whenever I press down on the plastic near the bottom and top sides of the phone it sounds like its crying out in pain =/

I'm not gonna go back and forth with you on this topic but I will say this..... Honestly, I can care less about what happens to your device. Who ever chooses not to use a protector on their phone is their business, not mine! What I offered was my personal experience and advice to the one who asked for our input. Ok, so what if the N1 doesn't have gorilla glass. Whatever glass the N1 uses, is different from the NS and I know personally what happened to my NS and what didn't to my N1. I'm very finicky when it comes to scratches on my phones. Not once did I ever have to put a protector on my N1. Luck had nothing to do with my NS getting micro-scratches. It's has everything to do with the way the screen was manufactured and what rubbed against it through my everyday usage!

EDIT: If you want a really scratch "resistent" (I say resistent because my wife is making me, I disagree) get someone to make a sapphire screen for your phone. Its common practice in high end watches and, as I own one, I can testify to its inability to scratch. I get quite a kick from taking some random very hard material and rubbing it against the face only to have it come out unscathed. The only issue that'd arise is if you scratched it with a diamond...then it would definitely scratch.

I don't know exactly where the scratches came from. They could've gotten there from a hard dust particle rubbing against it while cleaning my screen. The scratches I had weren't deep scratches. They could only be seen at an angle when light hit it....If you're definitely sure of your screen, why don't you bless all of us with an uploaded personal video of the key test?!

The point of my topic is just, that if I buy a nice phone like this I would like to use it as clean as possible, means only necessary accessories.
I had the Galaxy S before and Im gonna buy the NS now, before all of them the Desire. The problem is just that u always have to wrap the phone with stuff to make it "safer" and then u dont really see much of the design, the nice look of the phone, but it seems like this is just not possible right now .
Anyway I baught a silicon case so far, is there a good cheap screen protector on ebay or a brand u know?
And before I forget, I read that the NS has a "anti-fat" layer, so there arent really fat traces on the display, is this right? Would suck if yes, because its really annoying and I wouldnt like to lose this because of a screen protector .

At the guy who got scratches on his screen. I still don't get it man. I cleaned my screen with a microfiber cloth two to three times a day before I got a screen protector. As I said, I carried it in my pocket with my lighter most times, but sometimes in the pocket with my change and still no scratches. Not to mention dropping it a few times. I just can't see how having it in your jeans could scratch it since I felt my lighter rub against my screen.
I'm not stupid though man, its f***ing glass. It'll scratch. But I've never seen glass scratch from jeans. Its just not nearly abrasive enough.

Thin? The phone or the screen protector ? Well well then I have to buy a screen protector , is there a good one ?

I've had my NS for over a month. It has never seen a case. It's been in pants with keys, in pants with an un-cased iPhone 4, in pants with change, in jackets with keys and change, in a courrier bag with keys, change, a sharp metal mini-hard drive enclosure and dropped onto pavement a few times. The screen is absolutely scratch free.
There is a TINY bit of visible wear on the plastic back - especially at the very top and the very bottom, which are the leading edges when inserting and withdrawing it from a pocket.
One thing that has not been extensively examined so far - the "contour" display on the NS puts the entire face under more compression load when static, meaning that it will be MUCH harder to fracture, and therefore scratch, for a given strength of glass, since compression is where glass is strong.
Also, here is a little lesson on Gorilla Glass and any hardened glass. They are chemically treated to better resist surface flaws by creating compression in the surface of the glass. For Gorilla Glass, Corning starts with already-more-durable alumosilicate glass, and then uses their proprietary treatment it to better resist surface fracturing by penetrating more deeply than "traditional" glass hardening treatments on soda-lime glass - this means that, while you can still scratch it, the glass won't fracture as much around the contact, so you won't be able to see it as much. All of this is available on Corning's website.
For points of reference, here are my last 4 phones, their relative abuse states and what I saw out of them:
NS - one month+, hard use including travel, abuse my 2 and 3 year old kids, my daily high-speed bike commute over cobbled parisien streets, etc. Zero screen scratches. Oleophobic treatment seems to be holding up better than Apple's examples.
iPhone 4 - 4 months hard use as a phone, 2 more moderate use as a super-duper high-end iPod touch. Several very tiny scratches on the screen, and numerous tiny scratches on the back, then the screen shattered in the pocket of my jeans alone sometime on a transatlantic flight. I replaced the front and back with the "acquired" real Apple iPhone 4 white components someone stole out of Shenzen and sold through a site in NYC. One month light iPod use since, no marks.
N1 - 5 months as primary phone, then a 4 month break, then almost 2 more months as a phone when, battery be damned, I could no longer support the crappy mail and chat on the iPhone 4. It suffered very heavy use and abuse, including NUMEROUS hard drops and falls onto pavement and stone thanks to kids. The metal frame around the screen is VERY beaten up, and the edge has even cracked slightly on the screen from the compression around the metal edge, but the screen itself has no scratches.
Milestone (euro version of the Droid, complete with Gorilla Glass) - primary phone for about 3 months, and it had a long scratch down the face less than a month after buying it. But in this case, I know EXACTLY when it happened. It was in my wife's jacket pocket, and she gored it with diamond ring.
Finally, I don't think that anyone really KNOWS what glass is used in the Nexus S except for Samsung (and their provider, if there is one). I know that the Galaxy S, Epic, Vibrant, Continium, Captivate, and many other Samsung phones do use Corning's baby. I also know that many other products use it without mentioning it. I know that the iPhone claims not to, but that it does use some specially-treated alumosilicate glass.

Robse86, listen to this guy. He knows what he is talking about. A screen protector isn't really necessary. That doesn't mean the screen can't be scratched, so don't blame us when it does scratch. You should consider a case, if you don't like the micro-scratches that often appear on the battery cover.

Screen Protector vs. No Screen Protector

When I first got my first A2, the rep at best buy put on the screen protector before I left the store... (keep in mind that this is my first "smart" phone of any kind, let alone android) ..so, I had never really known it without a screen guard/shield/protector until I got my 2nd A2 (and, subsequently 3rd).
The 2nd A2 I knew was temporary because of a dead pixel in the center of the screen (and other signs of refurbishment), so I never bothered putting on a screen guard. And with my 3rd A2 and I still haven't put one on - I have a brand new Zagg Invisible Shield just laying there, but it been over 2 months... And, I gotta say I like it much better.
Now this can all depend on the shield you use, but without a shield, the touch seems more responsive, the screen crisper, it's easier to clean...
I have a nice case that is raised a bit on the topside edges to help protect, and I never put anything else in the same pocket as my phone...
I know it's risky, but don't we have Corning Gorilla Glass already? Can you scratch that? And I do eventually have a contract upgrade coming anyway..
Thoughts? Preferences? Keep your minds out of the gutters..

I had a screen protector when I first bought the phone, and I got annoyed with it. The screen was dimmer, but the screen was less prone to finger prints. I still have it as it's reusable, but I left it in the car in the Florida heat, so the layers of it are peeling off. My screen also jumps and stutters when it's plugged in and fully charged to 100%. I should probably buy another one to preserve the screen seeing as how I don't upgrade until May.

I have to agree with you. I personally was super paranoid about scratching my screen and so I put shields from various companies on my screen to help protect it. The screen guard got dirty and so I took it off, and I love not having the screen guard on because of the reasons you stated.
I am pretty sure our phone comes with gorilla glass, but it isn't invincible. I have a scratch on my screen but it isn't noticeable when using the phone just when the screen is off. But I guess just keep it safe in a pocket that you don't have anything in and don't have sand chillin' in your pocket.

I've had this phone for almost a year and I didn't start using a screen protector until a couple of months ago. For some reason the screen on this phone scratches easier than my Captivate. I keep them in my pocket but the Atrix 2 has accumulated quite a few small scratches near the bottom of the screen and around the buttons.
I would rather not use one, but I would like this phone to last a while, even as a back up. I've tried several protectors and I've settled on the Great Shield clear protectors. You can get 3 for $7.99 on Amazon and they install easy and are pretty durable. You can also take them off, clean them and reinstall them without losing any adhesive properties.

i had a anti-glare screen guard which i used for 6months and one day due to some expt i was doing on my phone with skins it got off. havent put one back, have just one tiny 1mm scratch which is visible only if you look at it tangentially. have to say the colors look more vibrant and the touch is more responsive (might be due to OC and cm10).
Anyways, i have a case with raised edges, same as altered described, and i take extra care of my phone now. but since im keeping this phone for another year n a half atleast, will definitely get a new screen guard, (maybe one without the anti-glare effect, if i find one) cause gorilla glass Is prone to scratches.

Initially I didnt use any "protection" LOL, but had two tiny scratches on the screen. Yes, it does catch scratches easily compared my previous devices, I tried these 1. Amzer anti-glare, will be good for 1/2 months then you will hate it, 2. Amzer Mirror Screenguard, gave me migraine (literally!) 3. Right now having Xtremeguard on it and like it.
There are basically two reasons why I get the screen protectors, to protect the screen obviously and the screen without protector is too slick for my liking, that's just my opinion.

My first A2 went from release day to this September when it bricked and was replaced. In that time frame i had only acquired 2 micro scratches never had a screen protector on it nor do I have one on my replacement. Also the glass is coated it's that coating that is scratch resistant. Watch this

I have a serious thing against screen protectors and cases. I prefer my phone to be naked.
Screen protectors, no matter what you people say, make the screen worse in some way. The display is made to work well alone. They just all suck, and if you ever want it off, in a lot of cases, god help you, especially with self adhesive ones. They do however help prevent scratches, because you will just scratch the screen protector instead of the screen, so if that is important, you may want to consider it.
Cases, now this is just opinion. There is no doubt that they help prevent your phone from breaking, I just absolutely hate them. I don't like to bulk up my phone and make it ugly.
All that said, I take very good care of my phone. I have never dropped it, and I doubt I will, so there is no need for a case if you are careful.
P.S. yeah, gorilla glass is a joke, it still scratches. Just has a slightly higher hardness, and wont break as easy, but coins or keys will still do their job the same.

First up I feel like a dunce picking up that Skinomi worth 7 green skins sucks bad bad. Totally not recommended.
Gorilla glass is in iteration 2 of implementation so that speaks for itself about our ver 1. Plus there is no Oleophobic coating on our device. I invested a massive 20 + $ greenbacks on Otterbox and though no complaints with usability it sure makes the phone bulky and downright fugly. None of the screen guards last more than three months until you need to put a new one.
In India, given the extreme dusty atmosphere in cities, a small two hour ride in public transport coats the phone with dust. Otterbox covers the all ports with covers so that's good. In my opinion just a slip in/out elegant pouch is the best option. Screenguard I reckon is required. Wish 3M made the privacy screen protector for Atrix 2.

Perfect Case for S4 + Car Keys in same pocket?

Im not familiar with heavy duty cases maybe except for the Otterbox Defender since its locally available here in my country. Can anyone help me in identifying more cases similar to that defender case? I put my phone together with my car keys and i dont want to change that habit since it will make me feel akward the whole day thinking that my car keys are gone.
So far i need a case or at least protection for the screen and the body to avoid scratches. Yes, i know the screen is Gorilla glass 3 but its better to be safe than sorry. Any other cases out there that is similar to Otterbox Defender?
Im thinking of trying out the tempered glass spigen screen plus the blue spigen case but its not that heavy duty for keys imo.

Your post, as "fuuny" as I label it, is also the dumbest I have also ever read. Hmmmm $600-700 device, lets destroy it by putting car keys next to it and risk damage, breaking, scratching it.....despite having the need for a case that will prevent this possible problem, only to be secure that one hasn't lost their keys due to the fact we don't wanna break any habits... :good: good job man!!

sorry if its dumb for you, my old Nokias like the N8 and 808 and my car keys together didnt bother me much since i know how tough they are. as for samsung i have doubts.

My S3 got a small scratch in my pocket from my keys. They stand up quite well to this sort of abuse.
I'd say your best bet is that sexy ass Spigen glass screen protector and a case of your choice.

Im thinking of trying out the tempered glass spigen screen plus the blue spigen case but its not that heavy duty for keys imo.

Bro, despite what some asshats may think, what you do with your phone is your own business.
The screens on today's phones are pretty tough when it comes to co-existing in a pocket with keys/change. The damage comes to the plastic (or aluminum for the HTC/iPhone crowd) phone body which is considerably softer than metals used in keys or change. Few people want their expensive toy sporting body scratches.
My advice to you if you want to carry your phones in this way is to get a nice, cheap TPU case to protect the back and sides. Don't nead to get extravagant with that. Remember even the kickass spigen cases will use hard plastic and gather scratches. If a $10 tpu case gets scratched, who cares. TPU works very well for protecting against drops and scratches to the phone's body.
For the screen, even though they have a hardness rating of 7 (metals, even nails, have a hardness of 3 or 4) a screen protector of some sort is a good idea. Here's why:
While metals are softer than your phone's gorilla glass, simple SAND (silicates) that lurks in your pockets has a harness level of 7 and THAT can scratch your screen! Again, get a screen protector you like, but don't get nuts over it. A cheap $5 screen protector will do the job just fine -- that is be a replaceable shield to take any damage that may abrade your screen.

Good point, my s3 screen got a tiny scratch on the screen while in my pocket with nothing else in it but a little dirt apparently.... This s4, i immeadately got a protector and now i am waiting on my case to arrive.... also, thanks for providing some positive feedback to the person needing help, too many people on here are super dicks for no reason. I actually carry two phones sometimes for work, but i never put them in the same pocket (s4 gets its on pocket) and everything else goes in the others...

My wife beats the crap out of her phone in her purse. The phone has a case and I have to change the screen protector like once a month but the glass doesn't get scratched.
A defender in a pocket plus keys wouldn't work too well. Regular case with screen protector should do the trick.

Help with Z5C cases

Hi there, people,
This is the first high end smarthphone I have ever owned and I am quite at loss with the case selecting issue. On one hand, the device looks awesome without any case, and it's been marketed as "no need for a case". On the other, I would absolutely hate discovering a scratch in my brand new Z5 Compact, at least while the device is less than a year old.
So, I ask the following question to the community: Which case (brand) have you been using with your Z5C (or other high end phones)? "No case" is also an answer, if you've been using a S6E without case since launch, I would love to know, as I wouldn't expect the Z5C to endure less.
I wouldn't mind paying premium for a premium case, in fact, my goto option would be the official Sony case, but in this particular case, I happen to find it hideous.

PS: Any comments about the screen protectors would be welcomed, tempered crystal, plastic... I always suspected that it was a scam.

Tempered glass protections aren't a scam. They don't protect a lot better from scratches than plastic in MOST situations, but there can be that one time were an extra sharp thing goes through the plastic pretty much instantaneously and leaves your screen with a nasty scratch. Glass screen protectors also stick better in my opinion, leave no bubbles, and feel a lot better to the touch. You don't even need an expensive one, I bought two for 5$ on ebay, from a brand I never heard of and they're great. If you pay more, the fit will be better, it can be thinner, etc, but any is better than none. Plus, where the plastic protector scratches easily, the glass one will stay pristine a lot longer. You should try a cheap one to see the added comfort they add and decide from that.
Regarding cases, depends on what you want. There are other threads (1, 2) where you can see if there's anything you like. Also, since the phone just came out, there's not a lot of choice out there, most are chinese brands and rebrands of the same thing. You can always get one that protects and is cheap and get a better one once there's more variety. I have been using this one, it's not great, I like a bit more protection but it does a better job than going nude while I wait for a better choice.

Yeah, like NPK06 said, the tempered* glass screen protectors aren't a scam.
There's pretty much two types of screen protectors for phones. Plastic (PET film) or glass.
With a plastic one you tend to lose the slick feel of the glass and depending on the quality it could affect the clarity or colors and so on.
Plastic protectors also scratch relatively easily and the application is horrid as it's not a rigid object you're trying to lower on the phone.
Glass protectors are made from, glass, doh. Same stuff as there is on your phone. No loss in feel or clarity and so on.
Typically 0.2-0.4mm in thickness, tempered, oleophobic coating (literally "fear of oil") which resists finger prints and makes the glass easy to clean, nowadays they've got rounded edges as well. And high surface hardness (8-9H) so they're tough to scratch.
Easy application. All you need to make sure is to just line it up carefully. They adhere themselves pretty amazingly. Sometimes it starts automagically from one of edge of the protector and sometimes you need to press on the center of the glass to start the process.

It really is as simple as that. Clean, wipe, align, lower it down. Voila. Easy even for me with my big fingers
A tempered glass screen protector really is a nice thing to have. In case you drop the phone, the protector could take the front of the blow.
So instead of cracking the glass of your phone, only the screen protector would crack.
With my One M7, it once dropped. The phone bumped against a round metal object.
Point of impact was at the long side edge of phone at 45 degrees so not directly at/parallel to the screen or not directly at the side of the phone. The edge of the screen protector took the force of the impact, tiny section of the edge crumbled into small little not-sharp-pieces and then started a hair line fracture from the point of impact.
The glass of the phone was unaffected. That's pretty remarkable considering the glass on the M7 is from edge to edge.
I can not recommend these glass screen protectors enough! They're hell of a lot cheaper than having to repair a cracked screen!
And there are also tempered glass protectors for backs, eg. for Xperia Z phones.
StilGut is one of the brands that offers front and back tempered glass protectors for Z5 series.

Disclaimer though, I have never personally used StilGut products myself, I just came aware of their products on the Z5 accessories forum by another user. Just letting you know they exist and the price point.
* Tempered (or toughened) glass basically means that the glass has gone through a thermal or chemical process to increase it's strength.
The surface of the glass is in compression and the inside of the glass is in tension. If the glass breaks, instead of splintering into jagged shards, toughened glass breaks into small granular chunks.

Thank you both for your kind replies. I finally got into the shotgun solution: bought several cases with the hope that one of them fulfil my needs and the Stilgut screen protector. I might post some reviews after some testing, specially for the Stilgut, after I have tested its oleophobicness.

Question Cases and Screen Protector

Hello everyone, just got myself a S7 Tab FE and was looking around for cases. Has anyone found a nice case as well as screen protection?
Something with a screen this size im guessing it's important to keep it in a very nice sturdy shock proof case.

The problem with device is the thinness and large size. Even with a good case a drop may break the display... try to avoid doing it. Perhaps tethering the case may help.
As for screen protectors I use these on my N10+'s. The are an easy wet apply and last an average of 6 months. Even the spen doesn't bugger them up; they are self healing to a certain extent. Exhibit almost no yellowing over their lifespan.

Yes it feels awkwardly large and thin. Might try the S7 keyboard. Not sure how well it would function as a case tho.
I might check this screen protector out however on my N20 I prefer the glass screen protector rather then the film ones

Another member had a case and tempered glass protector on their's and broke the display recently.
The IQ Sheild will protect it from marring and scratches. Temper glass protector or not I would assume any sizable impact is likely to break the display.
Think about where you are and what you're doing when handling it... you know how it goes.

I bought the Tab S7 plus book cover it fits well with magnets
with a tempered glass screen protector they are here since I bought the device 3 months ago and they are fine
I put my tablet in my backpack so it's not a big deal

original book cover or keyboard cover are nice. But expensive and do not offer any more protection then some generic 15$ ones. I have one of those generic ones for home use because I need kickstand feature. Also have a spigen rugged armor, which I use while working on the filed. That one also has a sand feature but the case as such is pretty stiff so it needs more attention to use it that way. Not really cheap but certainly gives more protection then the original ones for less money.
And for screen, I don''t use any screen protectors, glass is scratch resistant enough for a while now and with screens huge as this or devices thin like this nothing really helps against cracking it. Need to be careful, that is the only thing that will help.

I went with a Poetic rubber-ish case and SuperShieldz tempered glass screen protector. The case is nice. Fits well with the screen protector, and even redirects the speakers toward your face which is awesome for watching movies or gaming.
