Native Hotspot on Stock [Rooted & Non+Rooted] - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

I posted this in the other general section of Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and figured I would post it here too since it is for Sprint Note 5's.
I found this in Sprint Note 4 section by @llawen, who found it in the Note 3 section and I can confirm it still works on Sprint Note 5!!
All credit goes to @idone. Not my work. Just sharing here.
You MUST BE ROOTED for this method.
Download sqlite editor from playstore (Speed Software version, which is a paid app....BUT if you know your way around that, then you're good ).
Open sqlite editor,
select files.
Then
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db/
Select carriers.
The last 2 lines (APN2LTE internet) and (APN2 EHRPD internet) you will see (default,mms), add ,dun.
It will look like this
default,mms,dun
Make changes in both lines and save, reboot, and enjoy.
Step by step Image instructions...

FOR NON ROOTED PHONES:
First step is to get your MSL number either by calling Sprint Customer Service, or trying this method here on AndroidForums:
[GUIDE] Easy way to get MSL without calling Sprint or using CMDA Workshop
After getting your MSL number follow these steps (originally posted by @MasterTentacles in the Sprint Note 4 Section):
Go to Dialer and enter ##DATA# (##3282#)
Press "Edit" then enter your MSL.
Click on APN Settings
For both "APN2 EHRPD internet" and "APN2 LTE internet" change APN Type from "default,mms" to "default,mms,dun"
After you enter the change, hit Menu -> Save before going to the next APN.
AND THAT'S IT!!! YOU NOW HAVE HOTSPOT!!!
But be aware, if you update PRL, you will have to redo these steps....
THIS IS ONLY A GOOD WORKAROUND UNTIL A FULL NATIVE HOTSPOT IS MADE.
Enjoy!!

easier method?
once rooted all you need to do is install Galaxy Tools
and click enable native hotspot (then reboot)
it will also show your MSL
been working for me since day 1 of root.

I had g tools but on my Edge can't find a working link any where. And when I triedto do this method then my data broke had to reactivate my phone

Yes this constant prompt is really annoying. Have you guys figured out a way to stop the prompt. I assume this is part of Sprint's Connection Optimizer software being enabled by default by trying to kick you onto wifi whenever its available even though I disabled the "Always allow scanning" when Wifi is off.

No thanks. I like to keep Samsung Pay for now.

Am trying to configure my hotspot to allow 2 connection but it wont let me or dont know how ?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...ot-root-flashing-t3048163/page30#post63679399

I have an issue with this. I can enable the hotspot and it does, but I cannot connect any device to internet through this device, they get stuck at obtaining IP address.
I also tried using foxfi and it is exactly the same, it even shows the MAC address of the device trying to connect, but it seems this phone never gives it an IP address.

Tried to get my msl number thru chat and got this reply..??

If you don't care about Pay, trip knox and run one of the deodexed builds in android development here that have MSL already disabled and Hotspot already hacked.
FYI, once you trip knox, you will never be able to use Pay again.

@imex99 @tdunham thanks some how it let me get in apn setting and add default,mms,dun and now i get free hotspot on a unrooted note 5!! I had it rooted before with wonderful MOAR but i consider OGD build has better battery life!

Is it possible to get msl with a logcat app.it, worked on my old nexus 5,I tried on note 5 and no success maybe I'm doing something wrong

Wifi HotSpot works on Std ROM! no root needed

I have no idea why, because last weekend I tried it and it told me I needed an expensive data plan. Since this is my first android device, I really don't know my way around it yet, but I spent years loading new ROMs on my old WinMo phones.
The two possibilities are:
1. The phone finally recogniozed my unlimited data plan, and decided it was OK.
2. I did install "AT&T myWireless" from the store afgter my last wifi fail.
Anyone with greater smarts of android PM me, and we can decipher what made this work right.
BB
Neither of those sound like a reason why. You cant have unlimited data AND tethering. In order to have tethering you have to go to a tiered data package. Sounds like AT&T may have screwed up your data or something. I would call them
Double checked my plan- it was not automatically upgraded to anything new or different.
I did roll my own APN to get the data plan working- could that be it?
APN=wap.cingular
Proxy=wireless.cingular.com
Port=80
[email protected]
PW=CINGULAR1
MMS Protocol=WAP 2.0
MCC=310
MNC=410
HMMMM. Looks interesting..
If you had to enter your own apn then there is definitely something wrong with your plan. Sounds like they didnt give you the right one

Just try it. Work for me too!! (BTW, I skip the proxy)
I have the unlimited plan too.
Nice discovery, just tried it myself and works for me, too. I suppose this shouldn't be too big of a surprise since the software supports tethering natively (plus HTC includes a tethering app). I imagine the preset apn requires AT&T to authenticate your account, and the standard apn you provide above does not. I'm curious if the apn has anything to do with network speed (ie. will using the above settings limit your data to 3G speeds when 4G is available)?

Does this work? At&t won't be charging us extra for this apn?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
my experience has been without the MediaNet APN you won't have the faster speeds can anyone else verify? In other words if getting tethering working is as simple as editing apn then we should keep it to ourselves
The reason you can use the hotspot feature right now is that you added a new APN. If AT&T changes your plan to unlimited 4G in their system, you don't have to add a new APN. The problem with that is that it disables the hotspot feature and you get the "not included in your SIM" message, unless you get one of the tethering plans. Also, the problem with adding a new apn is that it may disable H+ when is eventually turned on.
Jus tested it and it works, nice find. Was hoping it enabled hsupa, but nope.
Still a nice find until I get around to rooting.

Can you switch back to the MediaNet APN when you want to?
Yes, you can switch any time since you don't replace the MEdia Net apn, just add another.

I set it up and it works for me too. Awesome, just like I have my Nexus one still! Hopefully this will stick around, I figure that since this is the APN iPhones are hooking to when they start supporting tethering we can kiss this goodbye.
I tried it and it allows me to turn on the mobile hotspot feature but quickly disables it. I don't get the message anymore but it disables before I can connect to the ssid. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!

I am in White Plains, NY
I used this method successfully. I noticed no speed differences between the MEedianet and this new APN. Now granted, the speed tests are sporadic as hell, but overall I see no difference. Best speeds for both MEdianet and new APN I get are about 2500 Kb down and 380 up.
Now when I tethered via the wifi my laptop got about 3000 Kb down. I also tried tethering multiple devices, had 5 gadgets hooked up to it, (It'll allow up to 8) all connected to the net at once and they all were quite usable.
Now all I need is a better upload speed and to get rid of bloatware and I'll be happy. I'm just not interested in going through that rooting gold card **** dance yet.
I'm getting the same issue as mj0528, it'll come on and then quickly turn off. Is there something i'm missing or doing wrong? am i suppose to name the apn something specific? everything is exactly the same as you guys posted it. I also have the 4g unlimited data plan.

[Q] Enable Tethering Tmobile One S

I just got the One S, I'm trying to use the tethering function but when I connect a device it forwards me to a Smartphone Mobile Hotspot Screen and a link to buy the service. I tried uninstallen the Mobile Hotspot app but its still shows the same ****. Does anyone know what to do to enable tethering on a One S from T mobile?
I think you need to add the $15 tethering package from T-Mobile.
I can connect my G2x without it but not my laptop.

Currently the only way I know of to get tethering working without paying for it is to root the phone. Then download wifi tethering for root users. Goto setting and set the device to "Generic ICS" and enable routing fix.

Roundabout
While I don't understand the technical aspects of tethering a phone, I stumbled upon it when I installed CM7 on my HTC Glacier. Since it was located in the settings area of the phone, I assume that it was the official implementation by Google which was removed via carrier and put back by the great folks at CM. While it may seem the most tedious, if you can find a custom ROM that supports it out of the box then it'll be free (in regards that your carrier won't charge an additional fee as long as you stay within your original data allotment) and it'll probably be the most elegant and stable solution.
Also of note, is that if you tether the round about way, it might work for awhile, but eventually you'll start getting redirected to a T-Mobile page to sign up for a tethering service. You need to change the user agent string in your browser to show that you're using a phone.

Think it sthe SIM
I think the microSIM APN section is locked. I would love if someone who understands the new SIM can explain.
I have the Amaze and was able to edit the APN's on it. But not on this One S and the new Micro SIM.
Don't think it has anything to do with the micro sim. My micro sim is just my old sim cut down.

This isn't working for me, both stock APNs were already set to epc.tmobile.com and I still get the redirect to purchase the $14.99 addon. I don't understand this because my previous Defy and HD2 had no problem sharing thier connection using stock apps on non rooted roms and my data plan wasn't changed when I got the One S. (I'm on the $20 2gb unlimited plus plan).
Figures that this would pop up after they bought my old phone. Given that they claim not to be able to return it, all they can do to put me back to where I was is setup the tethering addon with a corresponding monthly credit. Tech support opens in 3 hours, though I doubt I'll have much luck without loudly complaining at one of their busier corporate stores.
Way to go Tmo!!!!

[HOW TO] Tether Blocking Fix

Ok here is an easy Step-By-Step. You will need to buy and download SQLite Editor from the play store ($2.99). I have tried a few different free editors and could not get any of them to work. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor&hl=en
I did not come up with this fix, I'm just detailing how to do it, with images. If anyone knows who is responsible for finding this fix, please let me know and I will add they're name here for credit.
Same always, I am not responsible for boot loops, bricking, overheating, tornados, flash floods, alien attacks, or angry girlfriends. Use at your own risk.
Step 1: Open the SQLite Editor app (approve root privileges) and navigate to "/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/" and then click on the "settings.db" file
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Step 2: Click on "Global"
Step 3: Click on the + icon in the upper left corner
Step 4: Leave the _id field on (auto). In the Name field type "tether_dun_required". In the Value field type "0" (the number zero). Click SAVE.
Now just back out of the SQLite Editor app and then reboot your phone!
Perhaps someone could sticky this for easy finding?
Nice, but you don't identify what the problem is and how this fixes that problem. What is tether blocking? Is this something that the carrier imposes to restrict tethering?
Yeah, what is this supposed to fix?
Does it mask tethering data?
Does this somehow hide tethering from the carrier?
On the nexus 5 alot of people on T-Mobile (sprint too I'm told) have trouble with the Wifi Tethering, either it doesn't work at all or it redirects you to the Up Sell Website to buy a tethering plan. From what I've read, Android flags all tethering data so that carriers can know you are trying to tether. This bypasses that issue and allows tethering to work. As I said though I did not come up with this fix myself, so maybe the person who did can enlighten us all a little better as to exactly what this fix does. All I know is that I could not get Wifi Tethering to work before I did this fix.
I do not know for sure that it masks tethering data, but I would assume it does since people were getting the upsell website before applying this fix, and then after this fix tethering works fine...
edit: I'm on the T-Mobile $30 a month plan (100 anytime minutes, unlimited Texting and unlimited Data)
After searching around on Google I found this information regarding the TETHER_DUN_REQUIRED string. http://www.androidjavadoc.com/2.3/android/provider/Settings.Secure.html
static String TETHER_DUN_REQUIRED
Used to require DUN APN on the device or not - defaults to a build config value which defaults to false
So it would appear that there is a special APN that your get routed through when trying to tether. Setting Tether_Dun_Required to 0 bypasses that APN and uses the normal data APN for your carrier just as if you were surfing the web (or whatever) from your phone.

Cheers
UPDATE: It didn't work the first time because I hadn't changed the ownership of settings.db back to system after editing it.
just an FYI https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.htsoft.sqleditor&hl=en works just fine and it is free
I've tried installing SQLite Editor a few times now and it FC's every time I open it. Are others having success with the app on the N5/4.4.2?
You could do this via command line without an app, as long as you have the sqlite3 binary:
Code:
su
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
UPDATE settings.global SET tether_dun_required=0;
Note: will only work if column already exists...
Thank You
This was very clear and easy to follow. I can now tether on T-Mobile with my Nexus 5, thanks!
I currently own an AT&T Galaxy S4 Active and planning to buy a Nexus 5.
I've always thought that the Nexus 5, IF purchased directly from Google, will NOT have any carrier specific restriction apps, including tethering. But it seems that this applies to even Nexus 5 bought from Google?
FYI, my AT&T Galaxy S4 Active is using stock ROM but I have no restriction on tethering, even though I did not sign-up for data tethering.

Yeah, I am surprised T-Mobile actually is actively pursuing this.
On my AT&T S4 Active, I didn't implement the solution provided by OP but AT&T never give me any grief, given that I've been tethering for a long time.
I just got a Nexus 5 (4.4.2) from Google (not T-Mobile) and coupled this with my T-Mobile SIM (I have Simple Plan - NOT $30 plan), I did a tethering test. Started tethering on my N5, connect my MacBook Air and...voila... it works.
I don't have to do the SQL editing per OP. Is this because I have a Simple Plan? Thought I have no issue with tethering, just wondering...

I just got a Nexus 5 (4.4.2) from Google (not T-Mobile) and coupled this with my T-Mobile SIM (I have Simple Plan - NOT $30 plan), I did a tethering test. Started tethering on my N5, connect my MacBook Air and...voila... it works.

"turning on wifi will disable the hotspot" pop up

NK4 Stock rooted, I am using the built in hotspot, I keep getting the pop up saying that turning on wifi will disable hotspot. I can't get it to stop popping up I'm not trying to turn the wifi on, it is turning it on by itself. I have disabled connection optimizer and smart network switch, don't know what else to do. Any advice? Thanks.
This is your best bet

1. You should update to OA6 because NK4 was leaked. 2. This happens on stock ROMS and not just Samsung. Happens on HTC, LG and probably others. But... as @metalfan78 said the link he posted will be your best bet

What do you mean by leaked? I really hate Samsung's version of 5.0.

Sorry i miss read your post I seen NKD not NK4. You are still Kitkat. Either way it is common for that to happen, even when complete stock out of box

Hi Comet, were you able to get rid of this? It drives me CRAZY because there are two different messages:
"Enabling Hotspot will turn off Wifi" with the options "CANCEL" or "OK" and you have to hit "OK"...
then..
"Turning on Wi-Fi will disable Hotspot" with the options "CANCEL" or "OK" and you have to hit "CANCEL"
And my muscle-memory is always trying to tap it without reading it and I have to sit there and say, okay, is my hotspot on, yes, hit cancel... ARG
I was going to dig into the method linked to by elwood, but I have to dust off the old Windows computer, wherever it is.
did anyone ever figure out this issue? i am on stock SM-N910P, OG5 and i get the same thing like every 5 seconds

Does anyone have a fix for this i'm on GO5 latest firmware on note 4
Hi I have solved this issue, please thank me if this fixes your problem: Solution found! It hasn't come up for ten minutes and it was popping up every 60 seconds before. Go to settings and search for connections optimizer. Disable both boxes. Make sure you have all 3 boxes checked in advanced wireless settings as well, or it will still come up. That is correct, it doesn't make sense, but those 3 boxes that allow wifi to scan in background, notify of networks, and smart switch need to stay ON. Strangely my 4g LTE speed got much higher when I turned off connections optimizer as well.
It will work for 5 minutes. Then it will come back again. I have tried different ways and nothing can do it
I'm getting this as well. I've even watched the WiFi toggle and seen it come on and then quickly shut off. I'm gonna use app ops to hopefully pin point the service causing it.

Any luck? I hope that it is a system app that can be disabled

Was working on other things. Haven't started it. Shouldn't take long once I start it though. I'm trying to log package names of the apps which are trying to turn it on. I'll probably get the module done today.

I found it to be the itsonservice found inside the /carrier directory. Don't delete the entire carrier directory though :3 just the app directory that holds the apk for itson.
I now have to fix my phone. yay. xD

So I restored my backup of /carrier. It rebooted and reinstalled itson -.-
---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:54 PM ----------
Delete the following:
/carrier/itson
/carrier/itson_enabled
/system/vendor/itson
/system/priv-app/<anything with "itson" in its name>
Then you should be good. I also think the stock kernel holds stuff about it from my Googling.
Thank you. I wasn't too comfortable with deleting right out the gate, so i renamed the files and folders you mentioned above. Once I rebooted, I haven't seen the prompt since. (A good 6+ hrs ago.)
Thanks again for sharing., this was driving me crazy.

I was playing around with the bands my phone is connecting to and stumbled upon Itson, by accident. If you have or know your MLS code press ##3282# ,click edit and scroll down to Itson. Disable it and you won't have to delete or rename the files. I noticed that since I had already renamed mine, the system has it marked as disabled by default. (Probably because it can't find the files. Hah!)
I'm glad you guys figures it out, thank you!!!
So in order to use this fix though you must be rooted?

WiFi Hotspot Bypass Discussion

I found a way to enable wifi Hotspot. I stumbled across a file on the root of my SD card (external) while moving some files around. I decided to try and edit this file and wifi Hotspot works even after a reboot.
Mod Edit - hiding since it doesn't work as a Wifi Hotspot hack. Also revised title to better reflect situation.
Download ES File Explorer (you could use any other file Explorer, but I used ES).
Navigate to the root of the SD card and select the file shown.

Once you tap on it to select it, another prompt come up asking what format to use to open it. I selected text file.
Then it wants an app...
Once open, mine showed "2" so I tapped the edit button to change it.
I deleted the 2 and entered "1" (why not?) lol
Then I tapped the button in the top right corner to save and got the following
After that I went into my Hotspot settings and turned it on.
Grabbed my work phone and connected
Verified on my S7
Then I went into about phone to double check that I was on the right software version (the one that doesn't allow us to edit APN settings)
Hope this works on other phones.
It survives a reboot. We could probably change permissions to read only once we confirm this works for more folks.
If this works for you, hit the like button.

So since the update (I never tried hotspot before) I've been able to turn my hotspot on no matter what. I haven't changed any settings on my phone. Maybe they took the lock off but will charge you if you use it? Has anyone take the update and NOT been able to turn hotspot on?
After changing the config file, my APN settings are other grayed out now and can be edited.

That's the news I need to go change it. Thanks!

Hmmm, I can't find that file. Maybe I can add it? What's the file extension on it?

I did. I put a file in there with that name, put a 1 in. Still greyed out. Ugh! What's the extension on the filename?
OP, did you have that SD card in a Nexus phone before? A google search leads me to believe that's file comes from a Nexus.
Are you sure you accomplished anything here? On my S7 I've always been able to turn hotspot ON and OFF. And it allows connections, but that is only when your already connected to WiFi. As soon as you activate mobile network. The subscription msg pops up. I am using the PC5 update and the APN settings remain greyed out. I have that dun_status file and editing it appears to have no effect what so ever. The only way to get hotspot to stay on without the subscription msg is by rebooting and quickly activating hotspot before everything initializes. I'm sure this hack will be patched soon as well. I'm not sure what cfg_dun_status does. It may have something to do with hotspot but I'm not sure we're there yet.
Thanks for your efforts.

I used it in an LG G4 previously, however, before I began using it on this phone, I formatted it.
Weird part is my APN settings were grayed out like everyone else's (I checked last week when I got the phone and saw what version number I was on). Now they're able to be edited.

I'm not sure what the extension is. Es file Explorer doesn't give me an extension when I select properties.

Need more information and file.
OP can you use your computer to upload that file or check the extention. And more photos of your apn seetings that are not greyed out. The one you uploaded doesnt prove anything. Thanks
@daddymikey1975 If you can offer us more proof, I think more people would be willing to finally update their devices if we can keep the hotspot.
If you could post the file, or PM it to me, I'l like to investigate. I can post it to Google drive or Dropbox.
OP, can you try with wifi turned off? From your screen shot, you are connected to wifi. Aren't you just doing wifi share? Please turn wifi off, connect to LTE/3G and try and see if it works.

What other APN settings would you like a Screenshot of?
I might be able to get a YouTube video of the settings if that helps.

I do not see that file on my SDcard even with items unhidden.
OP you posted APN settings that are greyed out. if you scroll down and show APN type that is what we are looking for "default,mms,dun". Also hotspot can work on WIFI for most and it looks like you are on WIFI. Can you go to your data signal and try again. Fill us in on your success. we can hope right guys.
I don't think OP was doing 'true hotspot'. Just wifi sharing. His screen shot shows wifi connected with hotspot on.

Ahhhh crap!
The "type" is grayed out on mine.
(didn't notice that)
Prior to messing with that file I have on the SD card, everything was grayed out.

Was just looking at that file, and trying to figure out how that could do anything. Then came back here and see that it actually wasn't.
But I learned something. I didn't know that kind of WiFi sharing was possible. Not sure what the advantage is compared to just connecting directly to the same router, but it's interesting.
FWIW, I'm sending this using WiFi tethering after the Sprint update. I updated the APN settings prior to applying the update, and they're still working, at least until I get a PRL or Profile update.
