Support for 64 GB memory card on Moto G 3rd gen - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Although the specs of Moto G 3rd gen says tha it can support memory card up to 32 GB. I wanted to know can a 64 GB card work on this phone? I am planning to buy this phone and I am currently having a 64 GB micro sd card with me so wondering whether it will work or not.

64 gb will work, you just need to format it to fat.

I got mine yesterday and it supports my 128gb Sandisk SD card just fine. No issues.

I honestly don't remember what I formatted it to when I first got the card a few months ago.

FAT32

i dropped my 64gb card in the other day and after formatting it on the phone it's working just fine!

Fat32 unfortunately. I need support for files larger than 4gb

I think exfat is owned by microsoft for licensing, so maybe that's why.

Can u post storage screenshot

Would a custom rom (CM12 or future?) allow support for 64-128gb exFAT? I have no problems using exfat 64gb in galaxy s3 cm12.

Was looking at Samsung Evo+ 32GB Class 10 micro SDXC Card Upto 80 Mbps speed
It's SDXC (eXtended capacity), not SDHC. Should work fine after formatting? Can I partition it into 2 parts: one FAT32 and one exFAT and mount/use both?

My sandisk 64 GB SDXC work first time but on reboot mobile i lost card
i am not able to format in card reader pls guide me

Problem with microSD card 64 GB

Hi gyus!
There is a problem with Kingston MicroSDXC 64GB.
If I insert it in tablet slot nothing happened. Asus cant' detect it.
If I insert it in dock with SD adapter everything is ok.
I tried to format microSD in FAT32 and NTFS but without succes.
Is there a solution for this ?
p.s. by the way, microSD card 32 GB or 16 GB works perfectly.

my tf300 runs my micro sd card without any problems. i'm running seanzscreams' rom btw.
I'm also using a sandisk ultra 64GB, works in both slots (NTFS).
Have you rebooted the device, sometimes the tablet gets upset if you've not unmounted the card properly.

Yes, I have tried to reboot.
As I understand is a problem with stock kernel, but in untermensch kernel this issue is solved.
Are you using stock?
I'm using clean rom 2.6 which is based on the stock rom and IIRC it worked with the stock rom too.
I'm guessing it could be a problem linked to certain cards?
I am having the same problem on 64gb. Other devices read it however the tf300 doesn't read. I my tf300 reads other sd cards but not this one. I am in Clean rom and Clemson kernel.

And how about a stock 4.1.1 ROM?
Have anyone tried it?
Thinking of buying exactly this card, sandisk 64 gb 10 class
OK so I just got a sandisk ultra 64gb class 10, took it out of the package put it in the powered down tablet, powered up, watched, and while booting saw the SD card icon in the lower right. Checked storage in settings, and it picks up 64gb. I'm running stock jb v.18 unlocked and rooted.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
all stock kernel should be able to read the 64g
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using xda app-developers app
And it does very well. TWRP can't though which is a disappointment, but I'll live with it.

[Q] SD card

So I've noticed with every media storage that you buy, you don't actually get the full storage advertised i.e. you buy an 8gb sd card/usb stick and only get 7.49 or a 16 gb and get 14.49 or even buying a 32 gb and getting 30 gb, etc, etc. My question is what does all this storage go to and is there a way to access or get the full data storage?

Actually those space are fill by data like, when we connect it to PCB it must be acted as its a storage system.
When we insert it in mobile, few things run between Mobile and sdcard to get mounted and similarlly other things....all these data is stored in that unalloyed place.as the size increase the unallotment space also increases..

So it's a bit like a "bios" for the sd, but not really a bios. So from what I understand from what you guys have said, it stores the data on how it is supposed to act when it comes into contact with different devices and the drivers, etc?

THe files are installed when you mount the sd card into your phone, so you can read the contents of it, and so you can have read/write privellages, same thing when you plug it into your computer.

Ext-SD card not playing nice with my m8

Hi all!!! Ok, so I have a 32 gig micro SD card in my m8 but when I try to download something to it let's say a torrent file or album zip it won't download until I switch the designated folder to internal and when I transfer music to my SD card it won't play in any of my music apps. It tells me it "can't play this type of file" It does store my photos very well. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem before? Is my Sd card corrupt? Is my Sd card outdated or something?? lol thank you guys

Do you have a link to the kernel thread? It sounds like you are running one that doesn't remove the SD write protection from stock. Without that removed, apps can only access specific folders on the card and they have to be coded within the app to allow it. Think sandboxed mode.
The easiest way I know to check the SD card is connect it to the computer with a card reader. Most likely it will be ExFAT, but 32GB and under can still be FAT32.

No I don't. I'm using the stock kernel used in the Rom. Maybe a different kernel will help? Worth a try.

If you didn't change the kernel, try that. The write protection is a built in feature of KitKat designed to limit how much of your data an app can access.

[Q] Question about GS6 app partition

What is the size of app partition on GS6? For example on my GS2 it's 2 GB and ofcourse it's not enough.
Welcome to 2015, the old days of separate partitions don't really work the same way as before, so if you buy the 32GB edition you will have about 24GB for all of your stuff (pictures, videos, applications, whatever) .

on a 32GB device it is partitioned into cache, system, data and some low level paritions like bootloader, recovery, modem etc.
on the data partition lies the /data & /sdcard partition wherein sdcard is running as an emulated partition that resides inside the /data parition.
Usually the data parition in a 32gb device is about 24gb so you'll be having about 24gb of storage for your apps and whatever files you put in /sdcard.
So in short they share the same storage space.
Great news Thanks guys.

That's true but I think his question may be what I answered, for system as where the apps are installed vs data of apps are stored. I say this because the S2 is a 16 gb phone with about 12gb usable for storage. He said he had only 2gb so I took that as he wanted to know system storage, as he said "partition" same as you said. No?

First link does not work, I think, because of the special symbols in it... You can try this one: h t t p s : / / yadi . sk/d/5YI63uiAhz5UD/ (remove 10 spaces) and then open folder with "SIM+SD"...
Second link works fine: h t t p : / / 4pda . ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=640662&view=findpost&p=4166144 8
There are 10 spaces in it also (last one before number 8).
Sorry for this, but I just can not post normal links (not enogh posts)...
OT.. FYI for those who want to try to use this on other phones
I destroyed 2 micro sd cards using this method on Lenovo Phab Plus.
It works for a while but when i remove the sim tray or reboot, the system will say the micro SD is corrupt. Reformat. after a few times the micro sd card gets corrupted and cannot be reformatted. a 128gb microsd shows as 32gb RAW format and cannot be reformatted in mac, pc, phones etc.
It seems it doesnot works when phone is rooted. Its working for me on unrooted and when i root, dual card management is disabled and it only works for sim 1.
