Wifi / Bluetooth / Sim Card Issues Since Last Two OTA Updates - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received an OTA Update in early to mid May. I am now forgetting which version I received at that time. ( I forget as I have done so many downgrades/upgrades/factory resets in my troubleshooting the last month!) Up until these issues, I've never rooted or flashed a ROM, or unlocked boot loader or anything. My N5 had always been completely stock.
First Issue
It all started with just the sim card. I get "no sim card" message, even though it was in there. This was my original SIM card and I had never ejected it since I bought it new. I found I could turn it off, pop it out and back in, and boot it again. Sometimes it will see the sim card again. It may take 20 times, but finally work.
I naturally got a new sim card, as well as confirmed said sim cards worked in other phones. My wifi and bluetooth were working fine at first. Working with google support, they recommended a factory reset to fix the sim card issue. Immediately after the factory reset, my bluetooth would no longer turn on nor show a MAC address. At this point, my wifi was fine.
Second Issue
In addition to the sim card slot issue, now my Bluetooth no longer works! Around this time, I received another OTA update, this time it was 5.1.1 LMY48B. I had hoped it would fix the issues, but no dice! I start reading up on the XDA forums as I am determined to start rolling back to see if this will fix anything. I unlocked the boot loaded, rooted, etc following the threads on XDA
Third Issue
I do all sorts of flashing to hammerhead-krt16m_4.4 to hammerhead-ktu84p_4.4.4 to hammerhead-lrx21o_5.0 to hammerhead-lmy48b_5.1.1 . On the final flash back to 5.1.1 my wifi now no longer works!!!!!!!!!!! It is stuck at wifi turning on and no MAC address shows. It also seems my cell data is very very slow now!
After many calls to google, I think I finally succeeded in getting a “ticket routed up”. My phone is from the play store around 10/31/2013. They keep pushing I am out of warranty. I attempt to ask for a refurb N5 without luck so far. I am not very confident anything will come from google. This being my only handset now, it is just not an option to send this to LG. My current state is my voice/txt and cell data are working. Data seems a little slow but usable. Wifi and bluetooth won't turn on. I also still have the sim car slot issue upon rebooting. After a bunch of reboots it will eventually see sim card.
What else can I try? Is there a better way to attempt to repair/reload my radio drivers? Perhaps there is corruption of sorts? I have not tried a custom ROM or radio or kernel…… I did take to a local tech. They looked at everything literally under a microscope and did not see any issues that way. I am in the USA and have a lgd820. Although we are quick to assume a hardware issue, I am wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility with the first run of N5 and lollipop….. who knows!
I’ve read all sorts of threads on the internet. It seems I am not the only one. We are very quick to assume it must be a bad motherboard, it just seems too coincidental to me!

Hi,
This link was actually what i was going to suggest. It seems you've tried pretty much everything in the book except that.
I think its worth a try. Same as any other learning process, take your time and read the whole thing once or twice until you feel comfortable with the process. Then go for it.

Darn it, I should have downloaded those programs BEFORE rooting my phone again. Now I a struggloing to get my SIM card detected again to get data to DL them! whooops!
How would I go about attempting to read my files first to see if they are accessible and potentially write down my old MACs first?
EDIT: I found this but not sure how to get that working? I have Windows 7 and CMD prompt at this point. what program is that using?

OK, I went through those steps. everything appeared to go through correctly. Still no wifi nor bluetooth
EDIT: I rebooted a second time. WHen it first boot up, wifi was on and connected to my works AP. I quickly went in and snagged a screen shot of MAC address. Oddly enough, it did not match what I had input via hex editor. Within a few moments the wifi stopped working. It is back to the turning wifi on issue..... bluetooth still not working as well.
Very interesting.....
EDIT2: I get access denied when attempting to read either files within their corresponding folders under persist.
I was able to copy my stock files into my sdcard download folder and read them there without issue. Thus seeing my default addresses for both!
Perhaps it is normal, but I am never able to edit the old or new files under persist. I basically renamed original folders to bluetoothold and wifiold. I could delete them perhaps.
Note that I put my phone into airplane mode before doing anything noted in the steps.

Any other ideas? Given that it is showing my original MAC address the one time it worked, this makes me think that it is not reading the files .macaddr at all

I have the same problem. Funny thing is, the phone is just over 2 years old and the motherboard was replaced just 9 months ago (so, brand new one).
In my case, I received and Android update 2 days before I found the phone burning hot and restarting on it's own. Then the same chain of events you describe started to unleash. Now I can't be sure if this is software related, hardware related or both.
Can't seem to find a solution to the issue either.

I'm facing the same issues and I tried all the possible steps I could find on internet trying to repair the problem.
Actually, since the latest updates I was encountering some issues with the WiFi only: not turning on either off and not showing properly the MAC addres. So I decided to factory reset, even SDcard and since yesterday I have tried all the possibile guide I found to internet to fix the MAC address not showing and the WiFi not turning on/off but nothing worked. I tried even to flash again the old factory images, such as KitKat, Lollipop, etc., to lock the bootloader again and to dismantle the phone in order to clean the motherboard, but nothing worked. Phone still gives me MAC address 02:00:00:00:00:00 alternatively with the correct one, I can't figure out on what it depends because sometime it seems to work: it shows the correct MAC, it connects to wifi network; suddenly it doesn't!
I'm really going crazy to understand what's wrong.

You'll have to dig up my final posts on this , but in a nutshell, send into LG for repair, select cheapest option they offer. Receive mint phone. My cost was $45 and about one month... I picked up a cheap $20 phone to get me by.
In other news.... I now have a 6p!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wifi problems laggy, crashing

hi all.
As I mentioned in my other post I have been having some serious wifi problems. Basically if I leave the wifi off the phone seems to work fine. When I turn it on however, the phone becomes laggy and it does not work. After turning the wifi on from the settings page, it says it is scanning for networks. After 20-30 seconds a little bubble pops up and says "unable to scan for networks" it will continue to try and scan on and off but never is successful. The phone is better to start up with the wifi off because if on, the phone becomes almost unresponsive and I am assuming it is because it is trying to scan in the background.
I just rebooted into the recovery menu and wiped the cache and device, but no luck. Any other ideas as to why this is happening?
Little update:
I found a few other threads where people complained about the same problem. Their recommended fix involved removing the file "/data/wifi/bcm_supp.conf"
The full thread is here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-moment/46179-unable-scan-networks.html
I tried that and also did a factory reset but unfortunately have not been able to fix the problem. Does anyone else have any other ideas?
hi Scales11
I'm also having the same problem..
did the
1. factory reset
2. new ROMs - Darky 7.01, Cognition 2.3...
3. delete the /data/wifi/bcm_supp.conf file
and still no luck... and realised bluetooth isn't working either..
anyone?? please help?
If you have flashed other ROMs and still the same issue. I would say its a hardware issue.
my fix
Geekboy9:
I meddled it for hours and while others have found various odd reset/rom fixes, I concluded that it was a hardware issue which cannot be fixed.
I flashed it back to a stock rom and went to att. They agreed that it didnt have any water damage and gave me a number to call about getting a replacement. Since the phone was less than a year old and its failure was not due to my use, the replaced it with a refurb. All in all the refurb seems fine, even after I rooted and flashed the cognition rom. I would recommend you do the same.

Weird Network/Airplane Mode Issue

A couple of times now, when I'm out and about I lose my cellular data connection. It just stops working. In the past on other devices when this has happened a reboot will usually fix it. But on my Atrix 2, when I reboot the phone comes one with Airplane Mode enabled (please note that I did not turn on Airplane mode). If I try to turn Airplane Mode off, it will just sit and say "Enabling wireless connections" but never actually turn them on. I have to actually do a battery pull to fix this problem. The first time it happened I went and got a new SIM card (as mine was pretty old), and it just happened to me again this afternoon. I'm past my 30 day return policy (bought the phone at Best Buy) so I can't return it.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?
Just to reiterate, I did not turn on Airplane Mode, the phone powers on with it enabled and then won't actually turn off Airplane Mode when I tell it to.
i have the same problem too. After it happens couple times, i find out it might be the problem from the at&t address book issue which cause the phone cant read the sim for some reason (as it result, airplane mode keep enable). I also believe it is because the phone has been unlocked so the at&t address book crash. Is your phone unlocked?
Well, i am not quite sure it work on ur phone, but here is how i do it usually.
Way 1- plugin another sim card(sometimes i dun even need to do it), load the at&t address book, it will force the phone to load sim card cause of the contact from sim (then it should work right after that or after reboot)
Way 2- pull the battery for 1 day, it will work after that(but this is kinda dumb)
Hope this can help you XD.

My phone is not unlocked. I could see the AT&T Address book thing contributing, I've NEVER had that thing work right, and thus I don't even have it set up on my phone (it's on there in my Accounts, but it's not configured that I know of because i do my contact syncing through Google).
Battery pull definitely solves the problem, at least temporarily. The only other SIM I have is the old one they took out when they replaced the SIM after this happened the first time. I also don't store any contacts on my sim (again use google for that), so I don't know if doing a SIM swap would solve the problem in a more permanent way since I've basically already done that.
I tried battery pull, but it doesn't work sometimes. The reason i run at&t address book because it would force the phone to detect the sim again(cause of the contact). Lucky it doesn't always happen. hoping Motorola can fix this issue on next update.
**I just think about it, it might be some stupid mistake from motorola that overwrite the memory about the phone status section.
have you guys tried factory resetting it?
I tried to reset but it doesn't help at all
Sent from my MB865 using XDA App
how about freezing or removing the apps from att?

ok just inform us what happens.
I have and identical problem.
My phone would turn with the Airplane mode ON and I can't deactivate it, or even if it shows I can, it's not in the menu and I won't get any signal.
I can't recall If it happened because of a change but I doubt so.
I tried factory reset / cache / dalvik, also flashing numerous rom from neutrino to cm7 to cm9 and even MIUI (which worked the first time I flashed it for a day and then same error).
And It will also occasionnaly reboot If I try too hard checking for networks and such.
Any help ?

Galaxy S2 constant errors?

Hi lads..
Im proud owner of Galaxy S 2 for 8month or so. Started to facing some weird problems couple days ago. First was - no WiFi connecting (No MAC Address and cant turn it off). Now Process system is not responding errors with 2 options Force close and Wait. No matter which i choose, phone does quick reboot, like when windows explorer hangs and recovers. Can it be damaged nand storage? Phone where used a lot for data storage (Around 2GB per day where written on device and erased). Still should have warranty, but its tricky, coz have no time to wait 2-4weeks. Phone never been rooted. Any tools to check internal memory health?
Thanks a lot.
If you have never rooted nor installed a custom ROM then the best thing you can do is backup using Titanium/MyBackup, restore factory defaults and start all over again.
If you have gone and changed something then you will need to give some details.
Dan
Done factory reset yesterday - no difference. Now rooted device, kinda works good, but no wifi. When i use code *#*#232338#*#* it doesnt show my Mac address, says File doesnt exists.
Ok well in your first post you mention your NAND and a lot of data transfer. You don't transfer data to the NAND, or you shouldn't be. You'll be using the 16GB internal mSD card for that.
If your MAC address has disappeared this may be a problem with the /efc mount area, which is of course in NAND. This is probably not the case though.
Now you've rooted your flash counter may have increased. I would send this back under warranty after resetting the flash counter with a USB Jig.
Unless, that is, you remember anything else you may have done to the phone like an upgrade, changing the radio/modem, or something else.
Nothing changed.. Yea you are right about Nand and internal flash drive. Will costum firmware fix it? Or should stay on current rom? Sorry my dumbness - im kinda oak in droid things..
It all depends on what the issue is. I've seen someone talking about the EEPROM being broken on similar issues like this, which requires Samsung to look at the phone.
Custom firmware can only use the parameters the hardware or /efc area can give to it in the first instance. If the wifi MAC address is gone then it's gone, simple as that.
Weird - now see MAC Address when enter code, but wifi it self is not turning on for now. It turns on, does quick scan (doesnt show any AP) and then turns off again. So will bring it to warranty service. Thanks anyway

[Q] [HELP] Heat and signal problems on ZTE V970

Hi to all, I'm writing here because I had my first problems with my v970 (with etotalk rom). This evening I checked my mobile and I found that none of the sim was active (I was not in airplane mode) and I could not activate them, as if they were not in their slots. Meanwhile the upper part of the device began to heat up, so I tought it could be an antenna/receiver problem. I almost forgot to say that I installed Truecaller (deleting Contapps) and updated facebook and few others apps less than one hour before the event, but I already uninstalled them to exclude some of the possible causes. I'll gladly listen to any advice. Thank's in advance. GL
Restart, and see if it continues.
Already tried a lot of times, with or without sim cards. I also noticed an abnormal use of battery.
When did the problem start? What did you do before it started? Does your cellphone always have no signal, or does it come & go (sometimes SIM works, sometimes it doesn't)? Have you checked your APN settings?

The problem started yesterday and I never experimented It till now. As I Said, before I encountered It, I updated some apps from the market and I changed the default caller manager (should I call It in this way?) with Truecaller. I also deleted my sim contacts
. I can't check apn because there are no apns to check (Android shows me the voice "mobile networks" but I can't select it
Update: I tried to restore the original rom, but the problem persists. I also made a check with the recovery, and it shows me that the device cannot detect sim cards. I begin to think that it's an hardware problem (ouch). Am I right?
What did you do in recovery that checks SIM cards? Are you talking about CWM recovery?

Nope, it's the faulty recovery that etotalk sent me with the phone. I would like to install the cwm and flash another rom, but I'll leave that as the last option
If the recovery they sent you is faulty, then what good is it? If there's a custom recovery available for your phone, you might as well go with it, not that it'll solve anything by itself.
You might try inserting some kind of shim along with the SIM card to see if the extra pressure help make contact with the leads. Careful, of course, that whatever you stick in there doesn't stay behind.

I know about the recovery, but I was trying to don't invalidate the warranty (as if I'll ever use it...). Now I'm charging the phone, it's already the third time today...
Aw, heck. If you've got warranty, just send it in.

Yep, I've got warranty, but sending it in China will cost me almost as much as buying a new one
Ok, I flashed a recovery and a custom rom, but nothing happened. The signal is still absent and the antenna heats up the same way as before. I tried to enter engineer mode and it shows me messages as "com.android.internal.telephony.CommandExcepti on: RADIO_NOT_AVAILABLE", "3G off. Cannot set", ecc... It also shows me "invalid IMEI" if I try to look at it and I cannot change it back with the AT +EGMR command (it says "Radio on" and "SIM State: ABSENT", altough the SIM card is in its slot).
I think you have to crack the case.

Hmmm... if your phone is reporting invalid IMEI numbers then I would try first to get that working as it should. Read this tutorial and re-write your IMEI numbers.
Then I would try the latest stock ROM, which is available on ZTE support website. Here is the direct link to the ROM.
If your phone still doesn't work after that, then I'm afraid you have a hardware problem.
I have had the telephone for more than one month with no problem. Trying every ROM made by Bruno with no problem at all with signal, but...
About 4 days ago, I started suffering exactly the same problems stated by ArcheoGian. I have tried everything (installing older Roms, rebooting, changing SIMs from 1 to 2, etc.) but unfortunately with no success. I just have to try to install the original ROM, but I supose it will be the same.
Afer a few reboots, I can make the telephone to search for a network, it founds it, it connects, it transfers data, I can make calls, but ramdomly (can be after 30 seconds, 30 minutes or maximum one hour) it disconnects and the red X of death (Xbox 360 times ) appears on top of the screen.
I can try to go and return from airplane mode, or search for networks that it won't re-connect.
I fear it can become a typical problem for this phone.
I am "delighted" to send it back to China and wait for two months to get it back (after explaining it to the seller and so on). Fingers crossed
@prinxo: did you buy it from eto...k? (I don't know if I can write the entire name of the seller)
Update: I tried everything it was told me (except to crack the case, at least not yet...), my last hope is to manually insert the IMEIs inside the data folder. There's just one problem: none of the methods suggested in the link posted by bcgngm works on my phone, so I need to generate the IMEIs whit my pc (I couldn't open the exe with windows 7, I'll try with win xp in a while, otherwise I have to ask someone to create it for me).

No, I bought it from another seller at Aliexpress.
As I thought: I tried to re-install an original ROM, and everything remains the same. I thought I was successfull but after one hour the phone disconnected itself from the network. After that moment, I need about 3 re-boots to get signal again and it lasts for just a few minutes.
At this point, I would disregard a software problem.
Happy happy to have to send it back to China.

Why do you say it is not working? My preferred method is to use the adb commands (and for that you have to install Android SDK). Don't forget that when you type the commands there is no output message on the screen. The phone has to be restarted so that changes take effect.

The third and the fourth ones are the only methods to restore IMEI I didn't try, just because I never used sdk and adb (and I'm not sure to be able to use them). I followed the others options (I also created the IMEI file with the russian program), but it continues to show me the "invalid IMEI" message. Can you help me, maybe showing me a good walkthrough?
This ADB Tutorial looks easy to follow. Check it out!

Nexus 5 SIM not recognised

People,
I hesitate to ask the question again, but I promise you that I've read everything on the subject that I can find (including many of the 171 pages of the "Nexus 5 Flashable Modems and EFS Backup" thread...) and also on a lot of other sites.
My son's N5 on 5.1.1 ran out of battery a month ago (it worked perfectly for the 15 months that I had used it) and when he recharged it he'd lost mobile data. He had the mobile service triangle in the notification bar, but empty. No service.
I have tried absolutely every suggestion that I've read. Airplane mode on/off. Flashed 3 older radios. Installed older Lollipop & Kitkat 4.4.4 from Google Nexus factory image site. Installed the latest nightly of Cyanogenmod. Installed MPZ79M. Rooted it. Nothing works.
I don't believe it's a hardware problem - when I remove and replace the SIM the notification goes from the square with a diagonal bar across it ("no SIM") to the empty triangle. But as soon as I reboot (not just screen off & waken, but full restart) the triangle is replaced with the "No SIM" square again. The same reaction happens on the initialisation after a factory reset - at the "Register SIM" screen it says "No SIM", but extracting and replacing the SIM starts the "Attempting to connect to service" sceen, though this just does nothing until my patience runs out and I skip it. The SIM itself has 3 scratches along it, so all in all I don't think it's a contact problem, but something in the software. The SIM works fine in the Nexus 4 that I've given him.
EFS - I don't know enough about it still, but the phone displays the correct IMEI, so I'm hoping that this means that the EFS is not corrupted?
I know that this is a well-known problem, but on the off-chance that somebody has read a solution that I haven't found...
Thanks for your patience and any help you can offer.
Oh well...
...I guess I have a £350 paperweight?
I suppose at least I can use it as an entertainment console, since wifi seems to be ok. But a terrible shame to waste such a beautiful device.
Maybe you already tried it... Just to be sure:
a) You have incorrect APN configuration, to solve this try resetting your APNs via Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Mobile networks > Access Point Names and then click in three dots above and select "Reset to default".
b) Your mobile phone antenna unit is not working properly, solving this is pretty easy, shutdown your phone, remove your phone's back panel very carefully (using a plastic material..i did it using guitar pick) and then you'll see two wires adjacent to edges of your phone, just remove and refix them gently and reboot your device.
c) Reboot in safe mode and try to play with the preferred network type.
d) I had this problem "No service and no signal network in nexus 5" after restarting phone.
I tried to restart phone few times again and reinsert sim card. No luck.
Then I took sim card out while phone was on ( I forgot to turn it off) and reinsert it and now it's working fine.
It must be a contact problem. Just not shure how long will it work.

Thanks, Primokorn, I'll give your suggestions a go - appreciate the ideas.
I have tried the APN settings, but since there's no SIM (huh!) it's greyed out, though it's temporarily updateable if I extract/replace the SIM while the phone's on - but it's grey again on the next reboot.

Primokorn,
No luck. I tried all of these with no result at all. It looks as if this is a very serious flaw in the Nexus 5 - I had my doubts, to be honest, when my son said it started after the phone ran out of battery, but I see exactly the same explanation from other people in the huge number of threads reporting this no-radio problem. How can Google issue such a good phone with such a lousy bug in it...? No point in even asking them (though I've seen at least one person who tried with an impressivly helpful response from the Google support person) since not only is the phone out of warranty but it has been rooted.
Oh well, I enjoyed it while I had it...
