[Q] Overly saturated screen after reboot? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
So I got a S6 G920I last week, and I had to return it because the home button was kind of loose, and it was making a fun noise every time I pressed it. Now I have the replacement working fine, but I noticed something rather odd.
When I restart the phone, if I enter my SIM pin and unlock the device immediately after restarting (i.e. without letting the device to turn off the screen) I'm getting overly saturated screen colors, to the point that my wallpaper looks completely different.
The problem goes away after turning the screen off and on, but it's very weird this is happening. I've seen several issues with the S6 screen on the forum but nothing like this.
I'm adding the steps to reproduce (old habit from my QA days) just in case you have time to check it on your device:
1. Press and hold the power button
2. Tap on Restart
3. Immediately after the device restarts, enter you SIM pin (if needed). Don't let the screen turn off.
4. Unlock the device
After step 4. I'm seeing the device with a completely different screen color. Blacks are waaaaay to black, and generally looking very weird.
As I said the problem goes away after turning off and on the screen.
I'm adding some (very low quality) pictures, so maybe you can notice the issue. In the normal picture, you can see some diamond shapes in the wallpaper, but in the saturated image you can't because of the high contrast colors.
Let me know your thoughts please.
Thanks.

Mine does it too. Weird. Are you using a custom launcher or anything?

No, default launcher. I'm using the basic mode for the display, but I noticed it also happens if you're using Adaptive display. I can see you're using the international version, maybe it only happens on those devices... Can anyone using a T-Mobile or AT&T device confirm?

Can you try the same process with basic display mode instead of adaptive ?

I tried with basic display mode and adaptive display mode, both are behaving the same way.

I'm on a Canadian variant with a T-Mobile ROM. I don't THINK I have that issue. I tested with a dark wallpaper and it seems fine for me.

Just as a closure for this topic, after the last update I received in my SG6 a couple of days ago, the issue seems to have gone away. I've tried with different display configurations and couldn't reproduce it anymore.

[q] major bugs in samsung droid charge

Hi. I write for AOL News and am looking for some feedback on the droid charge. I've used two different phones so far and found several bugs that no one has apparently been focusing on:
1.The camera/camcorder will freeze the entire phone sporadically forcing the user to reboot the system. This occurs about 1 in every 8 times the camera is used. especially if it's on more than a minute or two.
2. Clicking the 'Message' Icon will open the browser or even 'settings'. Again, forcing reboot.
3. The 'brightness' automatically changes to 0 even when the 'auto' option isn't selected and the phone isn't outside.
4. This one constantly happens; when in phone mode, the screen will go dark after only about 10 seconds and nothing will bring it back except hitting the power button. I've been told you're supposed to be able to 'shake' the phone to awake it out of sleep mode but this is not the case. Additionally, if you've set the power button to end calls, the phone will sometimes end calls on the first push and sometimes not.
The phone could be a great device but it's obvious there are SERIOUS design flaws inherent in the OS.

1. Are you sure that you are not pressing the power button while in the camera application. Doing so will toggle the screen lock and appear to freeze the phone.

I haven't experienced any of those issues either.
As for number 4, I think that was a conscious design decision. I don't really like it either, but you can use Tasker or Locale to detect when you're in a call and change your timeout to whatever you want.

When you have the auto brightness turned off you can push and hold the notification bar and slide your finger to the right or left to raise/lower brightness. Is it possible you are doing this?

The phone isn't supposed to be waken by shaking it. You can change the time-out timing through the settings. I've never hung up the phone via the power button so I can't even comment on that one.

Out of curiosity, are you on EE04?
I have not experienced any of these on the 3 months with my phone. It locked up maybe once on the camera but never more than that.
I've had none of these issues and furthermore I second the above thoughts regarding locking three camera and the status bar brightness.

Count me in the camp that says I havent seen any of those issues. As far as the camera goes, the only issue is the substandard SD card that Sammy sends. You cannot record in HD because the card speed is too slow.
All the other issues you are seeing are unique.
Search these forums for them, if others have had the problem you will find someone asked about it.
If you do find them, I am sure that they will be very isolated.
I couldn't say about a totally stock phone as I flashed mine to gummy 1.9.1 on its very first boot, but I have never had a single problem with my phone.
I absolutely LOVE this thing, I have owned a TON of phones and IMHO this is hands down the best phone I've ever owned.
My boss bought a new Bionic last Friday and after playing with it for the day Friday I wouldn't swap my phone even for the Bionic (among other things, the screen SUCKS on the Bionic). My boss doesn't like it either, he is returning it tomorrow.

Never experienced number 1,2 or 4. But I have experienced number 3. Only happens though every couple of weeks. Hardly ever basically. It is weird though. I have no idea why my brightness changes even with my auto brightness off. Still a great phone though.

Lol, anytime!
It's a feature I don't think I could live without now.
I can honestly agree with ur first concern. My camera is wonky. I can take pics all day without flash enabled. But I turn on the flash and try to focus (tap to focus), and as soon as the pic is snapped, the screen goes black, causing me to do a battery pull. Happened to me on my former Charge, my current replacement Charge and my wife's Charge. Happened on stock unrooted, stock rooted, and with custom Roms on all firmware versions. And I can easily replicate it.

Sounds like you have some sort of agenda. Seeing as how nobody here so far has experienced this issues your referring to, I would say nothing is "obvious" at this point, nor do any of the issues above seem to be "serious", save for maybe the camera lockup issue but that very well could be user ignorance.

I think the fact that he is a journalist with some very pointed questions is the dead giveaway for his agenda. He's looking for a sensationalist angle to play for an article. Whether it's against Verizon or Samsung, I don't know, but it's pretty certain he came here with an agenda.

I've had my Charge for about three months. I ran bone stock EE4 for a few weeks and have been using the various iterations of Humble Roms ever since. I never encountered any of the 4 issues brought up by the OP.
As for HD recording, I recall posts mentioning that some phones shipped with class 2 and some with class 4 sd cards. I got a class 4 card in mine and I've never had an issue with recording HD. Likely the source of the recording issue.

dead backlight and possible backup solution

hello GS3'ers my brother has some gs3 problems
his gs3's back light appears to have died out. he can still use the phone just can't see what is going on, the sounds still work and everything. has anyone come across this before? i told him to hold a flashlight to the screen so he's able to backup his pictures and what not but the screen is really black. which is his main concern right now, because he wants save his things and then return the phone if he has to.
any help is much appreciated, thanks!
My understanding of the GS3 is that since it is an AMOLED screen, it does not have a backlight. Each individual pixel emits light. My guess would be an app is causing the problem, possibly one that alters screen brightness. I would start by pulling the battery and restart the phone. If you see a boot animation, your screen's not dead.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
that makes sense because the flashlight thing didn't work. he restarts his phone and even the boot logo is happening during a pitch black screen but the sound could be heard. it's gotta be something more serious

Can software really fix a stuck pixel?

I just got a replacement Nexus 5 which is fine except for 1 stuck green pixel just about at the centre of the screen. It's a bit annoying. I don't know if they would send me a new phone over this or if it's worth the hassle.
There are a number of apps that claim to fix stuck pixels by cycling through colours. I've tried a few for a few minutes. People in the comments have said running it overnight fixed their stuck pixels.
Does this really work? What's the principle that would allow a stuck pixel to become unstuck?
If I want to try this should the screen be set to maximum brightness or not? I'm a little concerned that leaving the phone plugged in with the screen on at max brightness may cause damage to the phone or screen due to overheating. Is this something I should be worried about?
Thanks.

Usualy its hardware (screen itself) related so software cannot fix that.
No. In answer to your question

So what's going on with people who claim it's worked for them?
In any case, I think I'll call Google and see if I can get another replacement. Maybe third time will be the charm...
Because it can work.
Think of each pixel as 3 switches.
One red. One blue. B one green.
In your case one pixel has the green switch stuck on.
These apps are designed to force the switches to keep turning on and off.
Sometimes you can get lucky and the switch will eventually free itself after so many tries.
Sometimes it will not work no matter what.
These apps just try to get it unstuck.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't

Screen issue with low brightness S7 - horizontal lines interference?

Hi,
When I have low brightness the screen the screen shows black horizontal lines as if it was like an interference.. (it's very visible on 0:27 in white background)
Do not know if its a hardware or software problem but when I increase the brightness the lines disappear.
video: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B64u8H_erzPTc3d0bHRsR3BNUms
or https://youtu.be/8Z3xWsanVLQ
It's very annoying, anyone else experienced this?
I haven't had that issue with mine. Could be software or hardware. If you really wanna make sure just do a factory reset without restoring apps and if it comes back it's a hardware problem.
Hi, anyway to backup everything so I can test ?
I'm also having this exact problem and i only received the phone today.
Mine appears to happen more significantly straight after an unlock of the phone (from the lock screen) , it does not appear to happen as frequently when the brightness is turned up fully however.
I have factory reset the phone (without restoring ANYTHING from other accounts/backups) and this has not helped. What's interesting is this is happening during the phones initial installation/setup also.... so before I've even entered any account info , i lock the screen and then unlock and i'm presented with flickering horizontal lines which remain for about 10 seconds and then the screen eventually rights itself, so this proves that it is not a user data issue.
It's also worth noting that this does not happen every time i lock and unlock. I've tried removing expandable memory, with an without charge cable , with screen brightness set to auto and off auto , taking the sim out, auto rotation on and off and none have stopped the issue. I'm going to call my provider tomorrow to see if i can get a replacement , but if thought i'd add my 2 cents

Hi
yes occasionally it happens with lock screen... and yes with max brightness it seems not happen...
Everything on my phone works perfectly, I don't have any other issues common which are reported here but this it's so annoying :s
I think it's the auto britghtness service but I don't know how to disable it.
Can you test if in VSCO app when you change filter it happens too more strongly (like it happens to me)

I've always just disabled auto brightness using the check box labelled (auto) next to the brightness slider .....?
And I've downloaded that app and yes it's also happening when i change the filters.
I've just come off the phone with my provider (vodaphone) and ordered a replacement which is free, as i only got the phone today
I haven't found any similar threads for this same problem for the S7 specifically (at the time of writing this) , but there seems to be similar issues with some nexus devices too , which also use AMOLED screens so could just be that we're the unlucky ones and have faulty devices. If your's is in warranty i would get it replace

what is for sure this is not a software issue. is it a problem of the screen or the integrated graphic chip ?

Hello,
It seems we have the same problem, I will proceed with warranty.
After a month of purchasing, the brightness sensor is failing, and the screen horizontal white lines. (Image 1)
drive.google.com/ open?id= 0B2Kw-KtTnhcSSGFraExIVEZ1Qzg
Then adjust the sensor to the maximum or minimum lines become smaller. (Image 2)
And finally if I expose the sensor in the sun or in this case to bright light (Figure 3) lines on the screen disappear.

may i know what model is your affected unit? is it s7 edge color black?
same issue here on my girlfriend's s7 edge from EE. im going now to ask for a replacement. i dont bother i have insurance but i'm still curious if it is the oled related problem or other component. in my opinion as technician it's a hardware related issue. I only think about i've never meet any software /os to have that issue ever. how can a software can do that if there are lines overthere specified for drawing certain things, the stripes/lines cannot come out of nowhere
First it was the dead pixels issue on the screen on the s7 n now the screen flickering lines on s7 edge n s7 ... These are not software bugs these are serious hardware issue very disappointing samsung shame even their gorilla glass is also a lie easily scratchable screen
Finally found a complete solution here.
Works like a charm.

Yes, I have my phone 3 years and the screen has been getting more and more dim over the last few months. The bottom 7/8s of the screen is darker thsn the top 1/8.

Pixel 3 screen flash

Didn't see this posted here yet, but forgive me if I missed it.
Trying to find out if anyone has seen or heard of any acknowledgement from Google regarding this. My new Pixel 3 (Verizon; non XL) since day 1 has had an annoying issue with the screen flashing when ambient screen engages. I have my settings with alwayson set to off, and new notifications set to on. If the screen is asleep and I get a text or any notification, the ambient screen wakes and will initially make the entire screen flash white very quickly.
I do not get a flash of the screen in any other scenario when the phones on, it only seems to be when the screens totally asleep and the ambient screen wakes. I can unlock the phone or hit the power button to fully wake the phone to my home screen with no flashing. Its not every single time, but its very often. I do notice sometimes when it doesn't flash the whole screen, the time or text on the ambient display will be at full brightness when it first wakes for a split second and then will go to the dim text Im used to seeing.
Replaced the phone through Verizon. Got another brand new one with the same exact problem. This one even flashes on reboot occasionally just before the white "Google" screen pops up. Google had me send them a bug report this time and are supposed to be having their dev team look at it.
WHY.
Mine did it once
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
I've also now noticed mine will flash in Instagram when I "like" something lol. Just the picture flashes within the app itself in that case, not the whole screen. Such a weird thing, that may have something to do with the app on the new pixel? I don't even know anymore.
I just saw the white flash. It was only for a few ms but it looked like a full brightness white flash on the whole screen. I had just set my phone down and I think the AOD was coming on.
Weird.
Yeah I have a feeling this is happening on way more devices than we're reading about. I hope it's addressed. Sometimes my notification audio cuts out real quick too. Hoping it's just all memory related.
I have this weird kind of screen flickering on my device as soon as I use the fingerprint area to turn the phone on. It is very faint and fast but its like static lines for half a second when the screen comes on??

Strange, I haven't had any issues like that using the fingerprint reader or just hitting the power button. Mine are all directly related to ambient screen waking.
My Pixel 3 is doing the same thing when I unlock it. Flashes like taking a selfie... I have even looked for the selfie to no avail.
It does not do this regularly, very random.

Report it to Google. I feel like it's something they're aware of (I hope) but support certainly isn't saying so if they are.
I saw a post on Android Police about bug trackers and read in some of the comments that people were having problem with screen flashing. Some of them said it was related to the always on display. Mine was flashing like white static lines. But it was only for half a second when you turn on the screen and it didnt happen every time, it was random. I turned off the AOD and it never happened again. Kinda sucks cause I like AOD. But that tells me it is a software problems and not hardware.
I turned off AOD too, for 1 day; the next day I turned AOD back on. I have not had a screen flash since (a few days now).

Try rebooting. I bet it's still happening you just may not be noticing. I've had my AOD off for a while and as soon as I turn the new notifications option it comes back. Not every time but still often.
I'm having the same issue, doesn't happen all the time but I can reproduce it usually by unlocking the device, locking it then when ambient display comes on, unlock it and the screen flashes/flickers. I've only managed to do it with ambient screen set to always on.
I've RMA'd this morning so I'll report back when the new phone comes.
I hope you RMA's for other reasons too because it is likely that you will get a phone with the same flickering problem. I think it is a software issue esp since it goes away after we turn off AOD.

I just find it strange that people are having the flicker in different scenarios, like mine is only when ambient is set to always on but other people are having the issue when it's set to double tap etc. Anyway I guess I'll see when the new phone comes.

Yeah let us know please once you get the new phone. It seems like it is hit or miss with people so you might get lucky and avoid it.

Quick update. My new phone arrived this morning and I've managed to get the screen to flash once so far where as my old one would do it 8 times out of 10. I feel like this is a poor display hardware problem rather than software.
I believe or rather am hoping that because it only happens when you turn on AOD that it is a software issue and not a hardware one. The only way something will be done is enough people complain on a bug tracker.
