[Q] Thoughts about MT7-TL10 compatibility in USA: Will Sprint enable its LTE? - Ascend Mate 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear xda community members:
Today our technician who is traveling in USA proposed an idea: Since MT7-TL10 supports TDD-LTE, what's the coverage in USA?
We searched online and noticed two articles about the service provider Sprint:
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/...ith-att-and-verizons-coverage-and-performance
http://www.wirelessweek.com/articles/2013/08/sprint’s-tri-band-lte-could-be-valuable-differentiator
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
We were very excited to find this information, since MT7-TL10 supports TDD-LTE B38/39/40/41, and Sprint seems offering TDD B41 (2.5 GHz). If this were true, then MT7-TL10 shall work in USA using Sprint's service.
We asked our technician to visit the local Sprint's store, in hope that we could try Sprint's Sim card and see if LTE can be received. The results were frustrating, NOT because we did not receive LTE; however, the customer service representative told our technician that Sprint does not offer Sim card in their phone nor they can activate Non-Sprint phones.
One question for xda community USA members: Is it true what our technician was told?
Thanks participating in this discussion.

Sprint offers CDMA phones, not GSM, they don't use SIM cards. Seriously amazed that a company that sells phones doesn't seem to know this, a simple google search with the following search words is all that's necessary:
Is Sprint CDMA or GSM?
and voila, the following results:
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080130202722AAMJOYu
No need to travel all the way around the world to walk into a store just to ask a technician what could have been gleaned from a google search.
In case you need a more up-to-date source (albeit Wikipedia):

I'm just really sitting wondering where you got your information that Sprint would support a GSM phone?

Ok, it looks like there is always confusion when you go to a Sprint store and try to get a SIM (UICC) card (see the first link below). That's because the overwhelming majority of Sprint devices don't use SIM cards (at least not accessible like they are for GSM devices). The good news, however, is that you CAN get a SIM card for Sprint, but you either have to go through Sprint's international customer service or order one from Amazon or a similar place (see links below).

I hope that helps. I am interested to see what your results are with testing the device on Sprint (if you ever get the SIM card). I probably won't ever use Sprint, but it's good to have options.
Edit: If you read this thread, you'll see how much of a pain it is to try and get a Sprint SIM card through their regular customer service or store.

I tried to research this for you. The short answer is that they were not lying to you. It is true. They have SIMs in their LTE phones, but don't seem to provide SIMs for phones that are not "Sprint" phones.
The idea of getting Sprint service does not look good. While LTE is GSM and their newer phones have SIMs because of this, they still use CDMA to verify/allow each phone onto their network. So I searched if they have any Bring Your Own Device plan. What I could find is that they have a Bring Your Own SPRINT Device plan, meaning, it had to have been a Sprint phone in the first place. I checked the Huawei Ascend Mate7 spec page on the Huawei site, and it does not list any CDMA frequencies, as well......

Thanks to sanjsrik, Techngro, jzchen.
We have limited knowledge about LTE service providers in USA. Your answers make this very clear to us.
B4 AWS seems being ignored by most Chinese phone makers. Under the current situation, then no service providers in USA could enable the LTE function on MT7-TL10.
Thanks your valuable input.

At&t and T-Mobile HSPA+ can run same device?

I know how At&t are gonna have HSPA+ 4g, I'm confused about the new devices they're gonna have that support HSPA+. Are they going to be able to connect to HSPA+ on T-Mobile's network.
So for example, I buy an unlocked HSPA+ tablet from AT&T, straight from their store. Is it going to be able to use T-Mobile's HSPA+ network if I put a T-Mobile SIM card inside?
Also, one last question, if I use T-Mobile's SIM card, do I have to do some special stuff to get it to work on their cell network? Like how you have to unlock an iPhone for it to work on T-Mobile?
Thanks

Hello,
Unfortunately you will not be able to use HSPA+. HSPA+ is just an extension/revision of the current 3G. Effectively it is also called 3.5G/3.75G in some reports. They use the same 3G band of each respective company. The At&t tablet would work on 850/1900 band and T-mobile will work on their AWS (1700) band. So if you bought an At&t tablet, you may need to get it unlocked, not sure if they lock the sim on tablets. At best you would get Edge service with a T-mobile sim.
thanks man, argg
do you think it's worth it to change to at&t because I just heard of the Motorola Atrix and it sound PRETTY BAD ASS!
I don't know since people I know are always angry at AT&T for their service either..

NP. I have had every major carrier offered in the US. I have had at&t, t-mobile, and sprint within the last year. I had verizon a while ago and dropped them because they could never get my bill right. Honestly, the service is about the same. The question is how is the service in your area. I mainly stay in my area about 90-98% of the time. I live in a major city so all carries have great service. But I have stayed with At&t for the last few years. Every time I go to another carrier I kept my at&t service, go figure. So I would just look at coverage to where you travel the most and go with a carrier that will give you the best coverage for the best price. Do i prefer a carrier over another, yeah. I like GSM carriers better because I do like to surf and talk at the same time. Sprint can do this if your in a 4G coverage area and have a 4G phone. Verizon is a no go with this feature until they release their LTE phones. But At&t has a better coverage footprint than T-mobile that is why I stick with them. Hope it helps.
Wondering a bit about this too.
I have service through Bendbroadband using a HSPA+ SIM with USB modem Dongle by bandluxe. The service is stellar on the speed, but I can't use the dongle with everything (iPad), so looking for alternate routes before i decide to move to a different provider.
I noticed that the CTO of the company said in a comment regarding their service that any unlocked UE that supports HSPA/HSPA+ in the AWS band could be used, but also had an unclear reponse on cell phones with HSPA+.
I have a Huawei Comet (unlocked), it lists the same AWS Bands compatible, but says HSDPA (which I thought HSDPA + HSUPA = HSPA+ but at higher speeds, correct me if I am wrong), and has hotspot tether that works with tmobile web service no problem.
I plugged the SIM in, and it updates the bar with BendBroadband but I get no data. (might need to provide the IMEI or something)..
Curious if you think it should work, before i go knocking on their doors.
Some other specs:
the mytouch 4g (HSPA+) lists the bands as:850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)
The comet is listed as: 850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz;UMTS: Band I (2100);UMTS: Band IV (1700/2100)
I am fairly sure the comet is HSPA+ but not advertised that way.
According to comments on the site, Bendbroadband technicians do not actually support moving of the SIMs. Bummer.. trying to keep my business local.. Bumping and moving to Tmobile once the month is up.

[Q] Factory unlocks, ebay and international carriers.

Hello gents, I'll start with a short story to get you into the thread:
Me and my girlfriend live in Venezuela, our service providers are not up to par with american or european carriers in terms of available devices, so we bought an HTC Magic for each of us last year to try out Android, everything was fine, I learned how to root it, install roms and such, and we had a pretty good run with the phone and the OS.
Last week we got robbed and they took away our phones, I decided to get a Nexus S for her and I found one at a good price on eBay(270$+shipping) however this one is branded for Sprint, will I be able to go to my service provider and just tell them to attach my account to the phone I bought on ebay? or are the Sprint and Verizon Nexus S locked to those carriers exclusively?
If the answer to the second question is yes, then a third question is raised, can I in any way unlock this phone to use it on my non-american service provider?
I have seen other threads and the replies are always "the Nexus S is factory unlocked." but I dont know if this refers exclusively to the ones sold in the UK or retail stores in the US.
I apologize for any noobish behaviour, I'm a big fan of devices and gadgets yet I lack a lot of the technical skills you all seem to demonstrate.
Thanks in advance.

There is no such thing as a Verizon Nexus S. Sprint Nexus S have different radio bands than the regular Nexus S (I9020T/I9020A/I9023) and features a 4G radio with it. You have to make sure that the phone is compatible with your carrier's bands. Another thing to note is that the Sprint Nexus S is CDMA (No SIM card) as well.
All Nexus S models come unlocked regardless if you're on the contract or not. Sorry to hear about your incident
The model I bought is GT-I9020T, according to people on the internet(random links on google) this model works on GSM frequencies of 850, 900, 1800, & 1900. It supports UMTS 900, 1700, and 2100 frequencies.
My current provider works on 850 and 1900 for GSM and 850 for CDMA.
Do you think I will have trouble using the phone I bought for my girl?
I feel terribly dumb when I ask this, I cant explain why, hehe.
Oh, I think I figured it out, I bought for her the non branded GSM version, so yes, it will probably work on my provider.
But what happens if I buy a Sprint CDMA one for myself? Those are definitely cheaper, and CDMA seems to be better down here, at least more stable.
Thanks for your replies, and simpathy, it's been a rough week without a smartphone for both of us.

I'm not sure and I wouldn't say the CDMA version is more stable. I personally never used the Nexus S 4G but from what I can tell from threads is that there are problems with WiFi or something of that sort.
You might want to ask the carrier yourself via phone to see if it would be compatible or so. Just let them know about the bands the phone supports.
And that's interesting if your carrier supports CDMA and GSM.
CDMA = No SIM card
GSM = SIM card
GSM is more popular around the world. Just including that just incase!
Alright, so I talked to my carrier they said the following:
-If I buy a CDMA phone with no contract on the US I will be able to register it on their network.
-If I buy an unlocked GSM phone I can register it on their network.
I guess I'll have to buy a couple of GSMs just to be sure... even tho they are about 100$ more expensive.
Thanks for all the replies, catch you later!

Mobile phone for italy

Xda Dear friends, I want to understand something, I would buy a phone from the states, the problem of the consignment through baipassato very useful website (viaddress) I find myself having to choose between the various types of cell present them with the board, without board, t-mobile, verizon, unlooked, etc., which can also be used in Italy?
Anything unlocked GSM with 850/1900 HSPA frequencies (aka AT&T frequencies).
But why are you ordering from the US? Surely the unlocked prices are much better from elsewhere in Europe.
so long as it's unlooked, because of the vast majority unlooked not report if they are at & t or verizon or t-moblile, says only unloked

Sorry having trouble understanding...
Phones in the US are rarely unlocked. They're almost always carrier locked devices.
Not to mention that ordering from the US severely cuts your choices down. The only phones that'll work in Italy are from AT&T. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA, and T-Mobile operates on different frequencies.
If you're in Italy looking for a device, the US is the wrong place to look.
I apologize but I had a t-mobile htc hd2 and it worked well but not great compared all'hd2 I've had since, as you said?
Also, several people in Italy are selling t-mobile, if as you say they work on different bands why we find them for sale.
not 'not true that mobile phones are cheaper in Europe, especially for used here in Italy is still a well spent money.
T-Mobile in Europe (run by Deutsche Telekom) is different from T-Mobile US.
Every carrier in Europe (with few exceptions) are running on 850/1900 HSPA+ (or within normal quadband UMTS). Buying a T-Mobile branded phone from the US means that it will not get 3G on your networks in Europe. T-Mo US branded phones in the US have AWS for HSPA+ (that's 1700/2100).
As I've said earlier and said in my reply to your PM, buying from the US market will not save you any money, and it will cause more problems for you. Retailers do not sell unlocked phones in the US. They're locked, and you will have even less of a selection because only AT&T has compatible bands for you. T-Mobile US, Sprint, and Verizon phones will not work for you in Italy.
As I said before and in my PM, just buy from Europe. You'll get an unlocked device that will work for your networks, and won't have to deal with hassles of importing form outside the EU. There are tons of quality importers, such as www.handtec.com, www.clove.com, www.expansys.com, and others. There's a reason why people who want cheaper unlocked phones for the US buy from Europe....
Prices are not lower in the US.

[Q] wcdma phone on straight talk cdma network. please help!!

Hello! I have been at this for a week now.
This is my situation, I bought a fully unlocked dual sim wcdma phone (Mpie 909T) running 4.4.2 KitKat.
I want to use this phone on my straight talk plan, but I only get service from Verizon wireless where I live.
I did some searching and found that I could use a R-UIM card to pick up signal from Verizon BUT I can not find where to buy one at (unless I buy bulk for a couple hundo). So I'm at a loss. I didn't realize that I didn't get service from at&t or T-Mobile till I got the phone and went to the straight talk site and it told me to buy a sim card activation kit, (checked on AT&T site to make sure I would have service and it showed that I would)... so I went and bought the kit only to find out that they actually don't have service out here. ? so if there is no way to find a r-uim card, would there be a way to change the radio frequencies in the phone? But I would also need a MEID # to activate on straight talk CDMA (Verizon towers). Or can I get one of those sim read/writer kits on eBay and program it to work?
I have not rooted the phone yet.
PLEASE HELP!!! I love this phone!!
I've been using the phone via WiFi from my old dx2 that's currently active.
Sadly, you cannot access a CDMA2000 network like Verizon's from a device that does not have a CDMA2000 transceiver. CDMA2000 is technologically incompatible with GSM and UMTS (sometimes called WCDMA). There are some dual mode devices, but Verizon explicitly forbids non-Verizon devices on their network. Even if you could somehow get a RUIM for Verizon, and their blessing to use it, your phone would not work unless it specifically has a CDMA transceiver in it. (remember, CDMA and WCDMA are not the same)
You need a device that supports not only the right technologies, but also the right frequencies. Most Dual-SIM phones are based exclusively on GSM and UMTS/WCDMA, and often operate on frequencies that are not comparable with US GSM operators. AT&T operates on GSM850, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900, and several bands of LTE. T-mobile operates on GSM1900, UMTS1700, UMTS1900, and several bands of LTE as well. However, most networks outside the Americas use GSM900, GSM1800, UMTS2100, and LTE800, 1800, and 2600.
You can use a site called GSMArena to check which bands your device has. If you want to use a CDMA carrier (Verizon, Sprint, and many rural operators in the US), you generally have to buy a phone with their branding or one of their partners.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
I have similar question. Since I am currently using ST with a Verizon phone ( CDMA) could I buy a new phone to replace current one ? And does it need to be another CDMA phone? And what is LOCKED/UNLOCKED have to do with it ?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA Free mobile app
This is a very large problem. I am in the same boat. Up here, we have Verizon, and ATT. that's it. My first phone here was ATT. worked great in town. As soon as I got to my house dead.,... I bought a Nexus 6 popped the Verizon SIM in it called straight talk they registered me on Verizon's network and boom Full LTE, and VoLTE. My issue now though is I want to try other devices and it seems that the N6 is literally the only non branded phone I can use. There are some awesome new Chinese devices I would love to try and on paper have the correct signals but still claim no Verizon. I am frustrated and stumped after weeks of research and conflicting reports. Does anyone know what is going on? Thanks in advance

[Q] Nexus international version (D821) on US MVNO/Pre-paid

I haven't been able to find a good answer to this question so I thought I'd make this thread in the hopes someone with direct or relevant experience could chime in and leave the internet with a more useful record to help out others who have come across the same question.
It is well documented that the international version (D821) of the Nexus 5 does not work well (or at all) on US 4G. If this is incorrect, please feel free to chime in with any applicable 4G MVNOs, but that aside.. Because of the nature of this phone, many people have purchased it to use contract-free in their own country and may wish to travel with it to other countries and simply swap SIMs in order to use a a pre-paid or MVNO SIM during their travels. This becomes more difficult when it comes to traveling in the US when one wishes to use the D821.
With 4G presumably off the table, are there any 3G pre-paid/MVNO SIMs which are known to function with the d821 in the United States?
Thanks for any and all constructive input.
To answer my own question, it seems these days 3G only service is not a widely available option. T-Mobile's $30/Month 4G/3G plan may suffice (automatically puts your device on the best band it supports) though I have yet to test it.
That said, can anyone confirm T-Mobile 3G as working on their D821?
